Print circulation is 4,000 copies per issue and distributed to selected HCC campuses in the Houston, Spring Branch, Alief, Katy, North Forest and Fort Bend areas. Comments and contributions are always welcome.

Deadlines for contributions and advertisements are one week before the issue print date.

The Egalitarian is written and edited by students of Houston Community College. This publication does not necessarily reflect the opinions, views, interests, attitudes and tastes of the Board of Trustees, HCC administration, faculty, staff or students.

Opinions and editorial content of The Egalitarian that are unsigned do not necessarily reflect the opinions of The Egalitarian staff or adviser. The Egalitarian reserves the right to edit any submitted material for grammatical errors, offensive language, libelous materials and space constraints. It may also refuse any advertising that does not adhere to the HCC mission.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The Egalitarian staff consists of HCC students who must complete all tasks required to produce the newspaper, which serves all campuses of the HCC System. We want all students from all majors to contribute. However, we must follow our submissions policy in order to operate under our limitations of time, energy and staff.

All staff and contributing writers must be currently enrolled students at Houston Community College. The Egalitarian interacts with contributing writers via e-mail and telephone.

Visiting The Egalitarian will not help contributors get published, only quality work will.

Publication priority is given to staff members and assigned articles, and verbal commitments for assignments will not be accepted or recognized.

Press releases, story ideas, news tips and suggestions are always welcomed.

An editor’s goodbye

he end has arrived.

This is The Egalitarian’s final print issue — ever. Not only that, my run as editor-in-chief has also ended. It’s sad to say, but also bittersweet. *cue The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”, which is a great song.

A whole year went by so quickly that I tried to grasp as much as I could during my time with the newspaper.

This has allowed me to meet incredible people, incredible staff and faculty, and learn the many things HCC has to offer.

I wasn’t staff writer for long when I started. I already had the skills, and the attention to detail. By Spring 2019 I was already taking story requests, managing and training new students, and getting in touch with administrators regarding events.

I haven’t worked on a newspaper since high school, where I spent both my freshman and sophomore years working as a staff writer, from covering Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to writing a special on Kwanzaa. The almost 10-year hiatus, which includes several career changes led me to realize that journalism was, like, my thing. HCC had the exact path I wanted to take, and the result was worth it.

Ana Gonzalez As much as I want to stay another year, the best thing I can do right now is to move on and do better things. I will be just down the street from HCC Central, completing my Bachelor’s in Media & Public Communication at the University of HoustonDowntown. I will also be freelancing for their newspaper as well, Dateline Downtown, where I was recently hired as Assistant Editor.

If you ever have the chance, join The Egalitarian. You don’t have to try hard to join, you also don’t need to have excellent skills to participate.

You take classes at HCC? Good, you can join us. Organizations at HCC want to be heard, students and staff want to be heard. As reporters of the

Egalitarian, it is our job to make them heard. Student reporters have a special voice in the world of journalism.

My favorite thing to do on The Egalitarian? Attending events for free as a press member. I went to SXSW with a free film badge. It was an opportunity I couldn’t give up, even if I was strapped in wallet.

Meeting Lance Bass from N*SYNC and comedian Kathy Griffin was something I will never forget during my time.

I wish the next generation of Egalitarian writers the best of luck.

The digital age is finally here! I can’t tell you who will be the next Editor just yet, but whoever becomes the next editor, I know they’ll do a great job on the digital side!

Interior design program a hidden gem Mariah Hernandez

HCC has many hidden gems on every campus. One of those is the Interior Design program.

While stumbling along the halls of the Fine Arts building at the Central campus, one can the main concentration of the Interior Design program up on the third floor.

While stumbling along that hall is clear, organized information about the program and how one can go about earning their offering of certificates, competencybased training and associate degree programs at the cost of affordable tuition.

There is even more info about how to transition and to earn a bachelor’s degree from the comfort and convenience of online and in person classes from the same HCC Central campus.

As Houston is known as the epicenter of economic growth in Texas, when the economy grows so will the population of Houston. As people relocate to the inner cities and surrounding areas there will be a large growth in opportunities for interior design for all the residential and commercial spaces that will need to be designed by skilled

professionals that HCC’s interior design program can teach. The program promises to provide training that will follow relevant industry skills and standards such as rendering software and computer-based graphic skills.

HCC teamed up with Stephen F. Austin State University to offer a clear path of earning a bachelors as one would earn at university, but with the same affordability as any other classes at HCC. The classes have experienced instructors that have industry experience and the classes are of small sizes so there is great one on one instruction.

The program is equipped with the latest in industry technology and software.

The Arts Program keeps Mariachi tradition alive 4

usic programs are well heard of in public schools.

The most popular would be marching bands or choirs.

As for these predominantly Latino and Hispanic schools, things are a bit different.

They have a marching band like in any school, but they also have a fairly unique music program. Patrick Henry Middle School (grades 6-8) and Sam Houston Math Science and Technology Center (grades 9-12) have a mariachi program led by Professor Jose Longoria.

Longoria has been an instructor for over 20 years. He first began as a math instructor at Patrick Henry Middle School.

It was then when school principal at the time found out Longoria was also a mariachi musician on the side. Principal Banda then proposed the idea of creating an after-school mariachi program for students.

With only being granted a trial year. As significant results and enthusiasm in the kids, the program then took a vital role as part of an elective course as there were significant results in the success of students through middle school. Longoria also began to notice students who desired to continue in the program were saddened. As transitioning to high school meant leaving the mariachi

When the proposal of the program to sister high school in the community became a reality in the year 2010. Hence starting in an instrument closet joint the band room and little support from the high school staff at the time the program has grown so much after the years.

Students have been following the program since middle school wanting to attend Sam Houston to continue in the program alongside their beloved instructor.

“I believe that any time a student is granted the opportunity to belong to something. It is made easy to have them fall in love with the music and learning how to play an instrument,” Longoria expressed. As he is asked what he believed was behind the success of the mariachi program. Longoria also explains that the mariachi program not only allows students to have a feeling of belonging; they become successful not only in music but also in their core classes. “ I set expectations to the students to where if they want to be able to perform in the mariachi activities and attend the field trips, their grades have to be passing. We allow our students to catch up on their homework during our class period. As well as provide them with our assistance if they do not comprehend a subject,” Longoria explains.

professor to this career path, his response was, “I believe God brought me to this career path.” Thus being a fourthgeneration mariachi, it was expected Longoria to have mariachi music in his blood.

Being able to share his passion for music and culture with students has been his greatest motivation. The greatest reward of his job working, building relationships with students and parents, and also making a difference in their lives. “At the beginning of our careers as

teachers, we don’t get to see the impact on our students until years have passed. Bumping into them on the street to see them as successful adults,” says Longoria.

The Mariachi program has proven to be exceptionally successful not only by maintaining our youth occupied in a positive activity but also by shaping our future leaders.

With achievements such as; performing for several major television shows, at the Houston Livestock Show and

Rodeo, both Disney parks. The only concern for this professor is that many students and their parents are opting to send their kids to other schools like KIPP or Yes Prep. Due to some negative comments, they may hear from other members of the community.

However, Longoria remains positive in the future of the program as he keeps striving to bring attention to the magnificent job of these talented young men and women.

Jose Pineda, 21, is former student at Patrick Henry Middle School and Sam Houston Math Science and Technology Center graduated Salutatorian from Sam Houston in the year 2016. He is now attending The University of Houston Main campus where he will be majoring in Construction Management and minoring in Business Administration. In the wait of graduation, next May of the year 2020, Jose has worked tirelessly to obtain a spot at Baker Concrete Construction as an Intern-estimator. While also working as a mariachi violinist in his former music instructors professional Mariachi Band.

Pineda attended Patrick Henry during the years 20092012. Place at which Pineda fell in love with music and even earned violin solos with patience as well as practice.

When Pineda’s time at the middle school would come to an end, and his parents didn’t want Jose to attend Sam Houston MTSC ... He

wasn’t ready to say goodbye to mariachi just yet.

Pineda remembers trying to convince his parents multiple times to allow him to attend school at Sam Houston.

He wanted to continue the program and was willing to go to a school with such a bad reputation. Therefore, his parents agreed to allow Jose a year at the school. With the condition, if any trouble or grade drops arose, Jose would be sent to a different school — attending then Sam Houston from 2012-2016. Pineda once again made sure to stay on top of managing his school work and mariachi, graduating as a salutatorian in 2016 from the same high school his parents uneasy about from the start. Jose proved that the reputation and negative comments of a school does not determine whether a student can succeed. It also sheds light on the extraordinary work and passion Mr. Jose Longoria dedicates to his students and their futures.

When asked how the mariachi program at his former schools had shaped the person

he is today in his personal as well as his professional life? He responded, “the program has taught me that with discipline and hard work anything can be achieved.” “I learned never to say anything is too hard until you have attempted it.” Pineda also expressed, “I have learned that there is always time for improvement.” He additionally shares he has become a bolder person and much more determined to achieve new goals.

“Once you join the mariachi program, you join a family. A family that will always be there for you” expressed Pineda — gaining from experience at both schools the connections he established with classmates as well as his teachers. “More than becoming friends they became family” Pineda repeated. He also credits his Mariachi Instructor as he aided in overcoming his fear to take on new challenges.

Jose Pineda looks forward to seeing the program, and the instructor continues to change the lives of future generations to come. Jose is a prime example of the quality of future leaders of the community.

ed by Studio Arts professor and Resident Artist of the West Houston Institute Ashley Hope, the HCC Arts Academic Cooperative Class’s entry was awarded the Grand Trophy of the Cycle Division (bike brigades, scooters, motorless entries) at the 32nd annual Art Car parade, April 2019. The winning bikes titled “Skybound Enterprises” and themed “Soaring Possibilities” were the Cooperative’s first-ever attempt at a rolling work of art. Houston-based charity FreeWheels Houston donated used bikes to the class which were then reassembled and designed into fantasy “frankenbikes”—Carnival Bike and Airplane Bike— by students Seth Moody, Ricardo Rivera & Jessica Arone Wosniack, respectively.

The Arts Academic Cooperative Class, under a different cohort of students, is at work designing and reassembling an ambulance gifted to the Cooperative for the April 2020 parade from the Public Safety Center of Excellence at HCC NE. rom late January through the end of March 2019, during the heart of the HCC spring semester and the Egyptian dig season, Professor Michelle Marlar gave live Art Appreciation lectures via Canvas from Abydos, Egypt, the site of the Osiris Temple excavation, back to the Stafford campus, the site of her two classrooms.

Dr. Marlar is the field director of the Osiris temple project and traveled to Abydos, Egypt at the invitation of Princeton University and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University to continue her work at the Osiris Temple, as well as conduct conservation and site management work on the “portal” temple of Ramesses II. This archaeological site has been described as “one of the most important, but least understood temples in all of Egypt.”

kyscrapers, those iron and cement structures cutting into the atmosphere, carving shapes into the clouds during the day or jutting light into the blackness of the night, distinctively marking a location with the creation of a city skyline, were born as a product of Urbanization. As an architect’s physical manipulations of design and function meeting the needs of city planning on a grandiose scale, the more common ascetic structures, with rows of windows symmetrically splitting the surface within a grid, mark upon our shared urban experience as dwellers of the interior and exterior of these man-made spaces.

Principled upon the human experience within the contemporary manifestation of both social and visceral human needs (urban architecture), Hoag’s art work incorporates this iconic structure bringing the viewer of her art into a moment of pause in order to explore the internal connections between living space, the living and where the two become dependent on one another as society seeks the advantages of the urban opportunity.

As an urban institution, it is appropriate that this successful artist is part of our faculty at Houston Community College. In her classes, students are given the opportunity to creatively explore contemporary topics, much like her current focus with the topic of Urbanization.

Students are also afforded the chance to learn how to use appropriate materials to reflect their creative endeavors much like those used by Professor Hoag in her art making: clay, wire, graphite, ink and paper.

Newly added to the roster of artists carried by Houston based HooksEpstein Gallery, Hoag is regarded nationally as an astute ceramic artist and educator with many awards and residencies along with an extensive catalog of exhibitions.

Bushwick Bill’s legacy looms large DeRhonda Bankston & Jamal Brice The Egalitarian

O

wning his dance perform-ance, as “Little Billy”. Quickly he gained his reputation, as one of “down-south” greatest Hip Hop storytellers.

Capturing rapper fans by storm with his aspects of stature of 3-foot-’8 in height, born Richard Stephen Shaw, he was sent to America to attend a Bible school, there soon after he was reunited with his family in Fifth Ward.

Nevertheless, Shaw soon after depriving himself of receiving a high school diploma. It didn’t hinder Little Billy of pursuing his dream, neither entered with the performance of one of HipHop greatest rap groups of all time, Geto Boys. one of HipHop legends, performing on seven of Geto Boys albums.

Bushwick Bill storytelling rectified his legacy as one of the members of Geto Boys, rejecting limitation of what to say, neither allowing anyone to dictate what he shall rap about, being determine in his later years as a gangster rap artist, Bill soon learned of his battle with cancer.

He began to tour and release new music, Bushwick never struggle with prioritizing the concept to leave an heritage for his kids, he understood, money from old hits would bring little benefits, his plan begin to come into effect as he begin recording for residual income for their future. Exploiting to inherit fresh music, he began to liberate, what, when, how and who will distribute his record.

Houston has many legendary rappers that have paved the way for this generation and the Geto Boys were at the top.

And the whole city is mourning the loss of a Houston legend.

He stated on his Instagram, “He never forgot where he came from, with that being said, I will never forget him. We had an exciting ride, never a boring moment. I send my condolences to all of his loved ones especially his children whom he loved

Nipsey Hussle: The art of being self-made Jamal Brice

rmias Asghedom, who everyone knew as Nipsey Hussle, was an artist who changed the world through his music.

In 2008, Nipsey dropped two mixtapes, volumes one and two of “Bullets Don’t Have a Name” which speaks about his life and growing up in a gang culture through his music. Being original and authentic, he spoke about his life and how he grew up to show people in the same situation that there is a way out.

The true fans would see the evolution of his work as well as his growth from 2008 until his eventual death in 2019. He would always label himself as an urban legend and fans across the world would only agree that “everything he said about himself was true”.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California on August 15, 1985, he had two siblings: one older brother and a younger sister. Nipsey dropped out of school at a young age and began working and educating himself. His first job was shining shoes and was making a quite bit of money doing it.

began to sell t-shirts and cd’s to make a profit.

The art of being self-made was the beauty of Nipsey he expressed how he wanted control of everything he does. First, by buying the store he and his older brother once leased before his brother getting incarcerated, which was on the corner of Slauson

Ave and Crenshaw in South Los Angeles. He also drew attention in the industry by selling one of his mixtapes for a hundred dollars each.

Big celebrity names such as Jay-Z who had purchased 100 mixtapes for $10,000, which help get his art more recognized in the industry. He believed in helping the community

and even opened a coworking space for the neighborhood.

In 2017, after the ups and downs of losing the shop things finally worked out and he opened another shop in June and it was named “The Marathon”. Thinking outside of the box, Nipsey introduced a smartphone app that will allow you to interact with the store and with the items you purchased. Giving everyone a different way of shopping and enjoying the things you spent your money on was a genius idea at the time. He later expanded opening more businesses in that same shopping center, standing behind his community in giving back and “owning the block”, as Nipsey would say.

Since his tragic passing on March 31, 2019, he left behind a legacy that no one could match. In his own song, “Dedication”, he said, “I’m the Tupac of my generation” and you can see the similarities in that one line from the song. The world is still grieving over the tragedy, but The Marathon continues as Nipsey would say.

He left behind an incredible sound as well as great knowledge that we could use to help and keep his legacy alive. The street that he started his business from a young age is now being named after him. His art, music and knowledge will be left behind for generations to come.

‘CTR’ a reboot we all wanted and more Ana Gonzalez

From a timeless classic in 2000s gaming, “Crash Team Racing (CTR)” wowed many “Bandicoot” fans on the first PlayStation.

With the past success of “Crash Bandicoot: The N’Sane Trilogy”, developer Activision saw the positive outcry from the prized reboot, and they listened to fans wanting a reboot of CTR. As Ariana Grande would say, “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it!”.

In spite of “Sonic Team Racing”, which was released this month to add into the “list of games to play while waiting to buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch”, it may seem that CTR may blow Sonic out of the water. The humor and the charm that the original CTR brought still remains in the reboot.

The “Nitro-Fueled” version brings in more features. Online gameplay is now available

to take on players from all over the world. You can also customize your kart, just like in “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” where you can switch between motorcycles or regular karts.

CTR now includes hover karts, which is first introduced by the main villain of the game, Nitros Oxide.

The character selection has also expanded, with the addition to characters from previous Crash racing games such as “Tag-Team Racing” and “Nitro Kart”. Some of these characters are unlocked during your Adventure playthrough, or automatically unlocked by purchasing the “Nitros Oxide” Edition.

DLCs will be available soon, according to Activision. CTR now has six new courses for players to try out, and they tell new players that new courses and characters will be available later on in the year. Crash’s girlfriend, Tawna from the original Crash Bandicoot, as well as the addition of Spyro the Dragon. Other characters

such as the “trophy girls” from the original CTR will soon be playable in a DLC. Whether you purchase the PlayStation 4 version, the Nintendo Switch version, or the Xbox version, the remastered graphics of all the race tracks are somewhat lifelike. However, the only downside was that

the loading times seemed much longer than normal.

Thankfully, you can skip most scenes. Developers haven’t said whether there would be a fix.

Art, when you think of art you think of a picture or something you will see at an exhibit, but art expands in TV, film, music, museum exhibits, logos and much more.

Lots of movies won awards for visual and cinematography which are two key examples. With Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The film is scheduled to become available for streaming on Netflix starting in July.

stunning picture. The film overall to me was one of the best “Spider-Man” films ever. This film also differentiates the art style it depicts which correlates with a comic book coming to life.

Films steadily focus on explosions, computer generated graphics, gore, and action. It just doesn’t fit into telling the real story. For this film mainly showed “Spider-Man” from different worlds and each had different personalities.

Miles Morales, played by Shameik Moore gets bitten by a spider, and within two days he become “one with the mask”, gaining spider powers. However, he then finds out that there was more than one “Spider-Man” out there in different universes.

The characters were masterful, with each of them shining with multiple personalities. From “Spider-Hamm”, played by John Mulaney, to an animestyle “Spider-Girl” with her pet robot.

Not to mention that we were blessed with the appearance of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), and Spider-Noir, in which actor Nicholas Cage gave life to.

The audience adored the unusual art style from start to finish. If you haven’t had the chance to see this movie, it is highly recommended, especially since it has won a multitude of awards. Even if you are not a Spider-Man fan, or a fan of superheroes in general. People of all ages, even children would enjoy the movie very much.

The world stood still on the night of June 1, when MexicanAmerican heavyweight boxer Andy Ruiz Jr. took on defending champion Anthony Joshua at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Ruiz Jr., who was born in raised in Imperial, California, just 15 miles north of the U.S.Mexican border, was knocked down by Joshua during the first few rounds. But with perseverance, and ambition, he was able to shock the boxing world after knocking the defending champ down after four times, resulting in a total knockout after seven rounds.

He won the WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF heavyweight championship belts, becoming the first boxer of Mexican descent to win such championship. At 6 foot 2 and weighing 268 pounds, he was a “last minute” decision to enter the ring, after challenger Jarrell Miller dropped out due to testing positive for performanceenhancing drugs.

His win was unexpected, shocking the whole world. A wave of pride erupted not only at Imperial County, but also south of the border: Mexicali, the capital of Mexico’s state of

Baja California. After that night on June 1, Ruiz Jr. was able to put “the Valley” on the map for everyone to see.

The City of Imperial held a parade and rally at the small downtown area near Imperial High School on the morning of June 22. Close to 15,000 people, mostly residents and residents of Baja California came to witness the homecoming of their hero. The parade lasted for about a half-hour, leading up to the Imperial High football field, where he would be honored by city and state officials.

Ruiz Jr. was honored with the key to the city for Imperial, several medals and awards from local companies such as the Imperial Irrigation District, and lastly, a joint-proclamation from county representatives from all over Imperial Valley commemorating June 22 as “Andy Ruiz Jr. Day.” He credits his father, Andres Ruiz for the encouragement. He once told him that he would become the next “Mexican Rocky”.

familiar with the Imperial Valley boxing scene during an interview with KPBS, a local affiliate, “I think it’s going to benefit him because he looks like your buddy down the street and people love that. That authentic culture background that Andy brings just adds more spice to the table.”

Flyers posted on walls and windows in local restaurants indicating that “Andy Ruiz Jr. eats free here”.

Ruiz Jr.’s plans for his winnings were already in effect.

During a press conference on the Friday before the parade, he mentioned that the first thing he

bought was a car for his mother.

“I messed up all of her cars when I was young,” he said, laughing.

He also wanted to focus more on the youth programs here in the Imperial Valley, where the boxing scene is quite popular.

When I got knocked down, I got back up like the warrior that I am,” he said to a crowd at the Imperial High football field. “To all the kids that have dreams, dream big.”

PARIS — It wasn’t just the fans who were looking forward to a quarterfinal clash between France and the defending champion United States at the Women’s World Cup. Megan Rapinoe clearly was, too.

“I hope it’s huge and crazy. That’s what it should be,” Rapinoe said just after the match was set. “This is the best game, this is what everybody wanted. I think we wanted it, seems like they’re up for it, you guys are of course are up for it, and all the fans.”

While the players said the focus for the United States was always on one game at a time, Rapinoe voiced the underlying truth about the match in Paris on Friday: It was circled on everyone’s World Cup calendar since December’s draw.

“It’s going to be totally awesome. This is what everybody wants. And these are the biggest games that you kind of dream about as a kid,” Rapinoe said.

The United States advanced with a physically challenging win over Spain in the round of 16, while France scored in extra time to get past resilient Brazil.

The top-ranked U.S. team breezed through its group stage at the World Cup, pouncing on Thailand 13-0 before more balanced victories over Chile and rival Sweden. But Spain posed a challenge to the three-time champions, relentlessly targeting Alex Morgan and using brawn to counter the Americans’ superior speed.

Lavelle insisted afterward: “I didn’t flop.”

Players said the difficult match was crucial to the team’s preparation going into the quarterfinal against the fourthranked French, the first time the U.S. has faced the host in a World Cup. The Americans could also face No. 3 England if they go through to the semifinals.

“I think this game was extremely important to us, looking forward to France,” Morgan said. “It was a very challenging game and it showed a little

bit of what we might see in France, so this was an important stepping stone for us looking forward.”

France also got a tough test out of the way.

Les Bleues finished atop their group with three wins before surviving their knockout opener. Captain Amandine Henry redirected Amel Majri’s free kick for a tiebreaking goal in the 107th minute of a 2-1 victory Sunday night in Le Havre.

Valérie Gauvin, whose first-half goal was disallowed in a video review, put France ahead early in the second but Thaisa tied the score 11 minutes later for No. 10 Brazil.

Afterward, French coach Corinne Diacre was critical of her team, saying,

“We weren’t at our best.”

“Obviously, I know my players inside out. I know that we weren’t 100 percent today and the objective is to hit that 100 percent for the next game,” Diacre said through a translator. “Will this happen?

I don’t know. I don’t have a magic wand.

The Americans have played the French 23 times, with France winning just three.

But one of those was a friendly in January, when Kadidiatou Diani — who wasn’t named to France’s World Cup roster — scored twice in a 3-1 victory.

The match Friday, while great for the sport, also means one of the favorites will be headed home on Saturday. A lopsided draw put three of the world’s top teams on one side of the bracket, while No. 2 Germany tops the other.

The Germans, two-time World Cup winners, won their knockout round opener 3-0 against No. 38 Nigeria, setting up a quarterfinal Saturday against No. 9 Sweden in Rennes. The Swedes knocked Canada out of the tournament with a 1-0 victory on Monday night.

U.S. coach Jill Ellis acknowledged the final-in-the-quarterfinals feel to Friday’s match.

“I truly believe this is the world game for women, and so what a showcase piece. I’m sure a lot of people would like it later in the tournament, but it is what it is,” Ellis said. “Myself and probably Corinne are both like, ‘We’ve got good players, good teams and good setups, so let’s go for it.’”
