SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The Egalitarian staff consists of HCC students who must complete all tasks required to produce the newspaper, which serves all campuses of the HCC System. We want all students from all majors to contribute. However, we must follow our submissions policy in order to operate under our limitations of time, energy and staff.

All staff and contributing writers must be currently enrolled students at Houston Community College. The Egalitarian interacts with contributing writers via e-mail, telephone and video conference. Visiting The Egalitarian will not help contributors get published, only quality work will.

Publication priority is given to staff members and assigned articles, and verbal commitments for assignments will not be accepted or recognized.

Press releases, story ideas, news tips and suggestions are always welcomed.

Any student interested in joining The Egalitarian staff may request more detailed information regarding story length, topics, style, etc., by e-mailing The Egalitarian Faculty Adviser Fredrick Batiste at fredrick.batiste@hccs.edu.

re you graduating this month and are feeling blue?

You’re not alone.

This semester, for me, started out great. I had all the teachers I liked, I was finally taking classes relating to my major, lectures didn’t seem boring and was making new friends.

I felt like 2020 was the year everything came together.

I was set to graduate Spring 2020 with an associate degree in public relations/ communications. And like many other students I was ecstatic to start working at my dream job.

As an international student, finding a job is already stressful for me because it takes a lot of paperwork for any company to hire us. I was on track to get my OPT which would authorize me to work in this country and had an incredible job offer for the position of a communications specialist.

Life was good.

And then COVID-19 happened.

In no time, the cases started going from hundreds to thousands to now millions. Social distancing was enforced, and seeing people in masks was not weird anymore. Everything started closing, classes were

Zeba Kurji moved online, going to the grocery store was the highlight of the week and hanging out with friends seemed like a distant memory.

To top it all off, graduation was moved online.

This graduation would’ve been the first time I ever participated in a graduation ceremony. Back home, I never got to attend my own graduation ceremony because I gave my senior A-level exams privately, and so naturally my parents grew excited to finally see me in a graduation cap and gown.

They booked their flights as soon as they found out I was due for graduation. Due to

cancelled flights, however, they weren’t able to come visit.

Meanwhile, my OPT and my dream job got delayed … and then it really hit me. This will be the new normal for many of us entering the workforce or transferring to four-year institutions.

We won’t get to experience our first day of school or work in person any more. We may not even get to meet our fellow classmates who are graduating with us for a long time.

Despite all of this, it still gives me satisfaction to know that we are all in this together and that I am not alone in feeling the way I do. I am positive that will recover from this pandemic and create a new normal where nothing will be taken for granted, classes with our friends, evening walks with our siblings, dinners with our families or even a normal trip to the hairdressers.

Hugs and kisses to our loved ones will be more meaningful, and we will all appreciate our parents and grandparents even more because we now know that the person who said one man can’t change the world was crazy because he clearly never saw what happens when one man eats an undercooked bat!

A message from a graduate Hi, my name is Jamie Watts.

I will be a Spring 2020 graduate with my AA in multidisciplinary studies.

My journey wasn’t easy at all. I lost my mom in 1998. It’s been a very hard mental issue on me since then, and today I don’t know what happened to my mother.

But, I do know that I am a very strong mother, advocate and woman to my daughter, who is the reason why I never gave up. I’ve been in school so long I exceeded my funds, but

However, it is not putting a damper on the excitement of students as they complete their degrees and certifications.

guess what? I finally made it and I’m proud to say I’m done.

I have so many credits because I was undecided at the beginning with all the issues that was going on with me and my daughter, but I’m proud and thank you HCC for giving me another chance.

I want to thank my English 1302 professor, Dr. Brandon Hernsberger. He gave me hope.

No one never made me feel and have so much joy in class as he did because I never liked taking in person classes until I met Dr. B.
