FISCAL YEAR 23

REVIEW

A YEAR IN REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory continued to evolve in 2023. The first full season of THT Repertory brought professional plays to downtown Worcester, while the completion of Carroll Plaza realized free public programming on our doorstep. These new initiatives complement the mainstage and our 15-year legacy, improve our resiliency, help us reach more people than ever before and make our impact on our city even greater.

CONSERVATORY

Thank you for helping my dreams of training to become a ballerina come true. Scholarship recipient

In FY23, we awarded $49,331 in scholarships to conservatory students, ages 8 to 45. Scholarships are supported by individual donors, a scholarship endowment and our annual Access to the Arts Fund.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients by age

ENGAGING CONSERVATORY PROGRAMS Internships & Assistantships 19 local students took advantage of 28 internship and apprenticeship opportunities with our education department last season. These paid learning opportunities allow for area students to work behind the scenes supporting the productions and programs we run throughout the year. Internships provide the next generation of designers, technicians, managers, and performers to get real-life experience in a thriving performing arts center.

Master Classes The conservatory partnered with national tours and local promoters to offer eight master classes for students throughout the season. These exclusive opportunities included classes with Chita Rivera, A Christmas Carol, Kellie O’Hara, Patrick “Planet” Opran (Celtics NBA dancer), Annie, Ryan Bernier (Second City Comedy School), Jesus Christ Superstar, Dance Theatre of Harlem and New Chamber Ballet.

Student Performances Conservatory students rehearsed for a record setting 21 events resulting in 40 performances at 8 different venues throughout the year. These performance opportunities are a crucial part of the student experience and provide budding performers with the opportunity to put their year-round studio work to use on stage.

LEAP (Learning through Education & Arts Partnerships) Thanks to the support of two local family foundations, the Worcester Educational Development Foundation, Inc. is able to provide WPS students the opportunity to connect their classroom learning with the diverse cultural offerings resources in our region. Each LEAP is linked to the curriculum and includes pre-visit preparation, a field trip to an institution and post-visit projects and programs. THTC is the only cultural partner to serve two entire grade levels across the district. In FY23, 11th graders attended a performance of Warriors Don’t Cry. Inspired by Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals’s Little Rock Nine memoir Warriors Don’t Cry, this production was a catalyst for deeper discussion about social responsibility, civil discourse, social media, and community engagement. 12th graders attended a performance of Fences by the innovative African American playwright, August Wilson. His critically-acclaimed family drama which explores the evolving challenges of the Black community and their attempt to build a safe home in a racially stratified 1950s urban America.

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL PROGRAM In April, we celebrated our tenth year of Adopt-A-School with a student matinee performance of Hadestown exclusively for Worcester’s Burncoat and South High Schools. We worked with both schools (2,845 students) to develop lessons which would incorporate themes from the show into every class across the curriculum. Actors from the national Broadway tour visited both schools and answered questions about their careers, training and roles in the show. Students and faculty were able to attend the show for free with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the McDonough Foundation and our Access to the Arts Fund.

I’m infinitely grateful for the opportunity to see shows in my hometown for free. I’ve always been a theatre fan, but I never thought I’d actually be able to see some of my favorite shows. Theatre isn’t really that accessible to me, so I’m forever glad to have done this.

I don’t know if I would’ve ever considered the arts if it weren’t for the Adopt-a-School program. Never would I have imagined performing on the very stage that program brought me to see. It was unbelievable… I can’t thank you enough.

Worcester Center for Performing Arts (WCPA), a registered not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization, owns and operates The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts (THT) and, on behalf of the Worcester Cultural Coalition (WCC), manages Worcester’s BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center (JMAC). All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Free Family Shows We also continued our annual tradition of offering two free family shows to the community in the fall (Exhibit This presented by the Youth Acting Company at Worcester Art Museum) and spring (The Stories of Hansel & Gretel and Peter & the Wolf performed by the Youth Ballet Company in partnership with Worcester Chamber Music Society).

STEAM Workshops

School Workshops

In the fall of 2022, the education department developed a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) workshops to serve local schools. We expected to host 12 workshops in FY23 but nearly doubled that number with 22 workshops serving 478 students and 81 teachers from 8 schools throughout the year.

Annually, we offer in-school workshops and onsite engagement to schools all over central MA. This year, 140 students from Worcester’s Sullivan Middle School had a fully immersive experience which included attendance at two student matinees, an historical tour of the theatre, a STEAM workshop, acting workshops with conservatory faculty and an in-school visit from three Christmas Carol cast members who led drama workshops for the students. Multiple touch points throughout the year help us to develop long-term relationships with area students.

The hands on approach to Geometry standards was engaging for our students. It was great to show our students the connection between math and the arts.

EXCEPTIONAL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS WYSH The WYSH (Worcester Youth Speak Honestly) Project is an opportunity for Worcester teens to become advocates for themselves and activate social justice in their community. Sharing their stories with each other and their community helps them develop their unique voices, their place in the world and their potential to galvanize change. This collaborative program includes developing an original piece of theater based on their life experiences, theatregoing and social events, and scholarships for classes in the conservatory. This year the program served 10 young people who toured the show to three area schools.

Creative Movement with ASPiRE! This movement class for individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) or challenges related to brain injury is a partnership with Seven Hills. For the last seven years, we have adapted our dance curriculum for the participants’ unique abilities, while fostering personal growth through gross motor development, physical movement, uninhibited self-expression and social connection. In the spring of 2023, 16 individuals participated in one-hour movement classes twice a week for 15 weeks.

Downtown Dance In June 2023, our dance faculty visited six elementary schools in Worcester’s Burncoat quadrant. Students at Burncoat Prep, Clark Street Community School, Norrback Avenue Elementary, Thorndyke Road Elementary, Wawecus Road School and Worcester Arts Magnet participated in dance classes in order to be evaluated for this new community program. Downtown Dance will give Worcester children in our community the opportunity to join our conservatory’s dance program at no cost. All tuition and dancewear will be covered by THTC. We look forward to reporting more on this pilot program over the next year. OUR MISSION: To ignite and nurture a passion for the performing arts in audiences and artists of today and tomorrow. OUR VISION: To be a dynamic downtown destination where all people can experience the transformative power of the performing arts.

BECAUSE VITAL CITIES HAVE VITAL DOWNTOWNS, AND VITAL DOWNTOWNS HAVE GREAT PROFESSIONAL THEATRE. Repertory Report The Hanover Theatre Repertory (THT Rep) enjoyed its first full season of bringing professional plays to downtown Worcester producing five projects: Macbeth, The Poe Double Header, experimental staged readings of Judith and The Crucible, and The Marvelous Party. We engaged more than 50 creative team members across those projects, including Worc @ Play and teen conservatory students. We had five sold out student matinees including Macbeth and The Poe Double Header. We sold over 3,000 tickets to over 1,000 households.

Sponsorships We are grateful . . . Judith received a $14,000 JMAC Access Grant, funded by the Barr Foundation, The Crucible was sponsored by Mercury International Trading Co. and The Marvelous Party was sponsored by Hanover Insurance Group.

Learn more at TheHanoverTheatre.org/THTRep.

THT is thrilled to be part of the evolving dynamic theatre district footprint in downtown Worcester. Whether offering Broadway shows, concerts, comedy shows or family friendly performances on our mainstage; free public programming on Carroll Plaza; or professionally produced plays at the BrickBox Theater at the Jean McDonough Arts Center, we remain committed to our mission in igniting and nurturing passion for the performing arts in audiences and artists. Everything we do, we do for the betterment of our community.

Lisa McDonough, Chair of THT Board of Directors

Worc @ Play THT Rep’s 2022-2023 season welcomed a second cohort of Worc @ Play students. Offered in partnership with the conservatory, Worc @ Play provides tuition-free classical actor training and performance opportunities to residents of greater Worcester ages 18+. Pictured: Worc @ Play student Karen Richards in class (right) and on stage as Tituba in THT Rep’s experimental staged reading of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, featuring an all-female cast.

We are grateful for the generous $1.5 million matching grant from the McDonough Foundation, where all gifts are matched dollar for dollar, up until December 31, 2023. The THT Rep Challenge raises funds to secure THT Rep’s future and build its capacity, giving it the qualified staff and resources needed to present high-quality productions.

Bringing professional plays to downtown Worcester continues to be an adventure and a privilege. Thank you, one and all, for supporting this joyful work.

VOLUNTEERS

I just love The Hanover Theatre, the BrickBox and the volunteers that have become my family. I try my best to do whatever I can for the patrons to make sure they have a good time because that’s what we’re here for!

H. Carter Hunt Volunteer of the Year 2023 David Faneuf When he isn’t volunteering his time and talent, David Faneuf works as the Northeast Operations Manager for New Era Technologies, which installs phone systems and networks for major hospitals and healthcare systems, including Dana Farber and Tufts, in Massachusetts. About 11 years ago, David first heard there was a theatre in Worcester and his interest was piqued. He fell in love with our organization, and he wanted to join our family of volunteers from the beginning. “When I walked in, I thought Oh my God…this place is so beautiful! I had no idea that there was a place like this in Worcester. I was just floored. To this day, I still feel the same way when I walk into the lobby. I still want to pinch myself because on top of it, I get to volunteer here, which is great!” explains David.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Team We are grateful to this team who provides exemplary service in maintaining the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, our treasured musical instrument. They take excellent care of the organ, so it always sounds its best, especially during our organ concerts, silent films and annual production of A Christmas Carol. Resident Organist • Dr. Jonathan Kleefield Donor and Technical Consultant • Donald Phipps Curator • Bruce Hager Asst. Curator • Jon Anderson Organ Team Member • Ralph Swick

David Faneuf

He would like people to know that the volunteers are involved because they want to help make a difference and give the people in our city a wonderful place to go, see shows and make memories that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. David loves to be a part of the big moments that people experience in life, and the theatre offers many opportunities. In addition to the shows, he also loves to witness families and friends taking pictures, especially during special occasions and events.

“It is so adorable when families come in with their kids and I see that look of wonder and awe on their faces because it is the same way I feel every time I walk in. At Christmas, when it’s all decorated, it’s just magical. When they ask me to take picture in front of the trees I’m thinking…I just decorated that tree and this photo is going to be shared with their whole family!” says David. THT is fortunate to have David as part of our family and we are grateful for his dedication and service to our organization.

BRAVO TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

Our extraordinary and dedicated volunteers play a unique role as ambassadors, supporters, historians and tireless workers on behalf of THT. Since 2008, the volunteers have donated over 171,478 hours of service to our organization. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate, that equates to over $5.4 million of in-kind services. They are our brightest stars and we are deeply grateful for all they do. 3,000+ Hours
