ALAN SEIFFERT

President and CEO of The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts

There’s a special kind of warmth that fills The Hanover Theatre when the holiday season arrives, and as I celebrate my first winter in Worcester, I’m already beginning to understand why The Nutcracker means so much to this community. The sense of tradition, togetherness, and joy that audiences bring to this production is something truly remarkable.

This year’s Nutcracker also represents an exciting moment of growth for us. We’re honored to welcome Jonathan McPhee, whose celebrated work with the Boston Ballet and renowned standing in the dance world bring a thrilling new level of artistry to our stage. Alongside him, talented performers from Dance Theatre of Harlem, Boston Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, New Chamber Ballet, and Sacramento Ballet join our Conservatory students, alumni, and the Worcester Children’s Chorus to create a production that blends world-class excellence with the heart of our local community.

As I experience my first holiday season in Worcester, I’m struck by the pride and enthusiasm that audiences bring to this beloved tradition. It’s a privilege to share in that feeling with all of you. Thank you for supporting The Hanover Theatre, for uplifting our artists, and for making this such a vibrant home for the performing arts.

Happy Holidays,

Welcome home! Find your seats for Broadway, dance, music, and more at TheHanoverTheatre.org/Events.

JENNIFER AGBAY

Artistic Director of The Nutcracker and Director of Dance

Greetings friends and family,

As a dance educator for the last 20 years and as Director of Dance at The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for 9 years, I am committed to the success of our students and programs. This commitment requires boundless enthusiasm both in the classroom and on stage. It pushes us to provide students with transformative performance experiences like The Nutcracker

When I took on this production almost two decades ago, the opportunity it provided for the dance community was my top priority. This production has become a place where students can grow and seek success in their future. I have been amazed by the continued support of parents, and I have the greatest respect for them as they support their children in the arts.

As we are performing on this stage for the 18th year, our show is filled with magic and splendor – a show that the City of Worcester can call its own. I cannot begin to express the enthusiasm that I have for this Conservatory. I hope you all share this same excitement. The future is bright, and the opportunities are boundless. Please join me in this great adventure.

Dance Theatre of Harlem

Snow King, both currently in their fifth season with Dance Theatre of Harlem. Their appearance at this performance offers a sneak peek at the exceptional talent and artistry the company will bring to Worcester this spring.

On May 9, in collaboration with Music Worcester, we will proudly present Dance Theatre of Harlem, a company celebrated for its vibrant artistry and global impact. Its repertoire spans beloved classics, striking neoclassical works, and bold contemporary creations, all rooted in founder Arthur Mitchell’s vision that ballet should be accessible to everyone. Inspired by the work of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. Mitchell established a school that provided Harlem’s youth with the opportunity to explore dance and the allied arts, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most influential ballet institutions.

Through inspiring performances, meaningful community connections, and a deep commitment to arts education, Dance Theatre of Harlem continues to shape the future of ballet. Now celebrating more than fifty-five years of excellence, the company stands as a globally recognized leader in the field. Its legacy continues to expand the possibilities of the performing arts and foster new avenues of creative expression. Delaney and Micah's return in May promises an unforgettable experience that honors their remarkable history while showcasing the bold innovation that defines the company's work today.

A Christmas Carol in a new light

A Q&A with award-winning Lighting Designer Charlie Morrison

Each holiday season, A Christmas Carol to evolve while honoring its beloved traditions. This year’s production introduces a new set by scenic designer Kelly Tighe and original music by Steve Gagliastro December 17-28, offering fresh creative opportunities for the artistic team. Lighting designer Charlie Morrison shares how these exciting changes have inspired a renewed approach to one of Worcester’s favorite holiday traditions.

This year, our annual production of Carol will feature a new set designed by Kelly Tighe and new music composed by Steve Gagliastro, what opportunities does this present to you as a lighting designer?

C: The new scenery basically means a complete rethink of the lighting design. The lighting is always laid out structurally around the physical parameters of the scenery. Since we have a new scenic footprint, we’ll have a new lighting design to go along with it. And similarly, the new music will significantly change the way certain sections of the show are lit. Both of these new elements are exciting and give the entire team a chance to revisit, rethink, and refresh all the elements of the show.

I understand you have worked on several productions with the new set designer, can you share a little bit about those experiences?

C: Kelly Tighe is a fantastic collaborator and one of my favorite people to work with. We’ve worked on dozens of projects together. I’ve always liked his aesthetic, and he’s the type of scenic designer who always has lighting in the back of his mind when he’s laying out a show, because he knows that good lighting is key to making the set look great. He’s also a great problem solver, an incredibly nice person, and an asset to everyone else involved in the production. He’s great to have in the room.

Is there a specific scene you’d like audiences to look out for in this year’s production of A Christmas Carol?

C: I always enjoy the spooky and magical scenes in the show. Marley’s appearance is a highlight, as well as the Christmas Future sequence.

Tony®-nominated musical Mrs. Doubtfire is coming to Worcester

The Tony® Nominated musical Mrs. Doubtfire, a hilarious and family-friendly comedy, is coming to The Hanover Theatre June 26-28, and we had a chance to chat with ensemble member Jayden Cyrus Nelson about their journey and experience with the show.

Fresh out of Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Jayden quickly found themselves on the path to Broadwaylevel performance. “I was incredibly fortunate to be invited to audition for Mrs. Doubtfire shortly after graduation,” they said. After sending a self-tape and returning to New York City for callbacks, Jayden received the exciting news they’d been offered a role and went straight into rehearsals.

Jayden describes Mrs. Doubtfire as a story about love, family, and hope. “There is an importance of maintaining relationships when faced with hardship and change. It celebrates the power of love and hope, and of course, we all love happy endings,” they said.

The show is packed with high-energy dance numbers that push Jayden as a performer, including their favorite, the “Make Me A Woman” scene. “It’s a fun transitional moment that gives the audience a glimpse into the inspiration behind the iconic Doubtfire look,” they said.

Another favorite is the number “Easy Peasy,” which, like many of the show’s routines, combines speed, precision, and stamina, making it both challenging and

For Jayden, the magic of Mrs. Doubtfire lies in its mix of nostalgia and fresh storytelling. Fans of the movie will catch familiar Easter eggs, while new elements bring the story alive in a completely new way. Ultimately, Jayden hopes the Worcester audience will leave “… feeling hopeful, uplifted, and thoroughly entertained. Most importantly, I hope everyone walks away understanding and embracing the message of the show: ‘All is not lost, as long as there is love.’”

The Party Scene

It is Christmas Eve at the Silberhaus home, a large and grand house with the most beautiful Christmas tree imaginable. The Silberhaus family is hosting their annual Christmas party, welcoming the arrival of their family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and playing as they also welcome their friends. The party grows festive with music and dance as Godfather Drosselmeyer arrives. He is a skilled clock and toy maker and always full of surprises. Drosselmeyer draws everyone’s attention as he presents two life-size dolls. They are the delight of the party, each taking a turn to dance. The children receive gifts and Drosselmeyer gives Clara a beautiful Nutcracker that becomes the hit of the party. Fritz becomes jealous and grabs the Nutcracker from Clara and promptly breaks it. Clara is heartbroken and looks on as Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the Nutcracker with a handkerchief he magically draws from the air. As the evening grows late, the guests depart and the Silberhaus family retires for the evening. Clara, worried about her beloved Nutcracker, sneaks back downstairs and falls asleep with him in her arms.

The Fight Scene

As the clock strikes midnight, strange things begin to happen. Clara begins shrinking as her beautiful Christmas tree grows high above her. The room fills with an army of mice, led by the fierce Rat Queen. The Nutcracker awakens, and leads his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Rat Queen corners the Nutcracker and battles him one-on-one. The Nutcracker seems to be no match for the Rat Queen. Clara, horrified, makes a final, daring effort to wrestle away the Rat Queen’s sword, but the Nutcracker intercedes and impales the Rat Queen. She drops to the floor and the mice run away, carrying their leader’s lifeless body.

The Land of Snow

The Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara on a journey to the Land of Snow, an enchanted forest wonderland where they are welcomed by the Snow Queen, Snow King, and dancing snowflakes.

The Land of Sweets

The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Prince tells the Sugar Plum Fairy about the daring battle with the army of mice. They are rewarded with a celebration of dances from around the world. As a finale, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier dance a beautiful Pas de deux.

The Dream Ends

Clara awakens from her dream and finds herself back at home with her beloved Nutcracker.

Jennifer has had the great pleasure of working with artists from Boston Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet RI (formerly known as Festival Ballet Providence), Orlando Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Pittsburgh Ballet, New Chamber Ballet, and Ellison Ballet. At This Theatre

The Hanover Theatre had its spectacular opening on March 14, 2008, with legendary Broadway star Bernadette Peters and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, after a $31 million restoration effort.

Originally opened in 1904 as the Franklin Square Theatre, this building had a storied run as a Broadway touring playhouse (including featuring celebrated French actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1906), then The Grand Theatre. In 1926, it was transformed into the opulent and luxurious Poli's Palace, a “Grand Movie Palace” showcasing vaudeville acts, silent films, and “talkies,” designed by renowned theatre architect Thomas W. Lamb. Eventually, this building became the Loew’s-Poli Theatre, and then a modern Showcase Cinema in 1973 playing blockbuster movies such as “STAR WARS,” “ALIEN,” “JAWS,” and many more until shutting its doors in 1998.

Since opening, The Hanover Theatre has been home to over 2,440 performances, 3 million visitors, 114 touring Broadway shows, 415 concerts, and 166 family programs on its stage. Highlights include Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ringo Starr, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, John Legend, Neil Young, Diana Ross, David Copperfield, Kevin James, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

The theatre’s most recent tenants include Pete Davidson, Sarah Brightman, and Broadway touring shows Hansen
