As we all are aware, small businesses are suffering, and need everyone's support, as they are the engine that keeps the finances of America running. This downturn has forced many of our advertisers to temporarily cancel their advertising. Forced by the current financial reality, this week will be our last published issue until a members for a reconstituted board of directors are elected. While we are not certain of the timing, we have had enough interest shown from community leaders to be confident that publication of the paper will resume soon.

Detroit police say outsiders coming to city to turn protests into chaos DPD works with FBI to track down ‘professional protesters’

DETROIT – Detroit police officers are working closely with the FBI to identify and track outsiders who are coming to the city and trying to turn protests into chaos.

Hold on to your boots, here it is! Thanks again to our Sponsors, Venders, Artist, and of course the community for coming out to support the 2020 Farmers Market / Music in the Park.

A BIG THANK YOU to our Farmers Market Manager (Sabrina Edgar) for putting this flyer together so we can visually appreciate our sponsors and artists.

Just one of the many reasons why:

“These individuals have an agenda,” Detroit police Chief James Craig said. “They are not here because they want to honor George Floyd.”

Grass Lake is "A Great Place to Call Home"!

In an interview with Local 4 Defender Shawn Ley, Craig said his department is working with FBI agents to identify possible “professional protesters” who are coming to Detroit. Craig said he believes they’re in the city to tear down the bridges police have spent years building with the Detroit community. “They have another agenda,” Craig said. “We know that, and we are poised to address it.” Police have arrested people coming into the city from Washington, D.C., Nashville and Ohio. Unrest overshadows peaceful US protests for another night The majority of the arrests at Downtown Detroit protests have been people from the Metro Detroit suburbs, including Ferndale, Ann Arbor, Farmington Hills and Orion Township. Craig said anyone who broke the law over the past three nights was arrested, but officials are keeping a close eye on inside intelligence to track whether more outsiders are coming to turn what have been mostly peaceful protests into violent, destructive events.

100 Years Ago From the Archives Farmer's Daughter Churning Butter

of the 19th century, but the old ways were still used on small farms and in the dairies belonging to grand houses. After the cow was milked, the milk was left to settle in a cool place, where the cream would rise to the top. Earthenware dishes were used to keep the flavor from being tainted. After half a day or so, the cream was skimmed off and put ready for the churn. Smaller batches would want to collect a few days of milking to have enough cream to be worth churning, and a little fermentation would "ripen" the flavour. But the cream couldn't be left waiting too long in summer-time.

Home butter-making took time and energy, but only needed simple equipment. Butter churns were still well-known in rural parts of Michigan. In the cities it became less common for ordinary families to make their own butter in the course

Page 3

Cream-skimmers were used to lift off the cream. These worked well if they were shallow with a thin, almost sharp, edge. Skimmers from the last couple of centuries were often saucershaped with perforations to catch the cream while letting milk drip back

www.thegrasslaketimes.com

into the pan, just like those used to remove surface "scum" from stock. Brass cream-skimmers on long or short handles are decorative antiques now, but some were much simpler. Anything the right shape would serve the purpose. Other names for these were fleeter, scummer, skimming spoon, skimming ladle. A stick called a churn dash was moved up and down by hand in an upright container, usually made of wood or earthenware. Occasionally you find a churn lid from from as far back as 1400 years ago, with a hole for the stick, showing that this method has a long history. The stick might be perforated, or it could have a wooden circle, or crossed boards attached, but even with those to help beat the cream, this method took longer than using the more complex kinds of churn which were introduced in the 18th century, and became popular in the 19th. The long job had its own rhyme, and young farmer's daughters were often chosen for this chore. They would chant something like these folk lore words as exemplified in this traditional churning song:

toll-free 844.458.4637

Come butter come Come butter come Peter stands at the gate Waiting for a buttered cake In the imagination of these young girls, these rhymes acted as a charm to make the cream turn into butter, and were sometimes sung as a song which went with the rhythm of the work. It was widely known on both sides of the Atlantic, with many variations, and was probably already old when mentioned in print in 1685. Many cultures had their own churning songs. In these parts of Michigan charms and superstitions were a part of the everyday life on the farm. Metal objects such as horseshoes were used to drive away evil influences which might prevent cream from turning to butter.

Pay It Forward project Peace, Love, and Compassion Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

We are in the thick of things right now with the Corona virus and now all of the riots and protests happening across our country. There is one thing for sure that I know – people are hurting. It is horrible what happened to George Floyd and our country and cities throughout our nation are hurting. Sometimes I wonder what Jesus is thinking when there is complete chaos happening in our world. There is social injustice, racial tension, and innocent people being killed and businesses being

Page 4

affected. I personally think Jesus is sitting next to George Floyd and they are both probably weeping together.

I have to be honest, I’m pretty disgusted with some of the things that I am seeing on social media and in our world right now. From law-enforcement being weaponized to black people being afraid to step out of their homes, to the hate speech from leaders in our country, to looting and violence, and keyboard warriors - I can only imagine how disappointed Jesus is in all of us.

www.thegrasslaketimes.com

We are in the middle of a global pandemic, we have a toilet paper shortage for crying out loud, and there are murder hornets on the loose. On a serious note, cities are being burned down, innocent people are being arrested, and murder is happening on the streets from those not doing what is right. What in the world is it going to take for our world and country to come together!? For me, I’m going to continue to show compassion and shine God’s light! I will hold the doors for anyone behind me, I will be kind to those that are having a bad day, and I will keep my dog leashed and won’t threaten you when you are bird watching. I won’t judge you on the color of your skin and I will have compassion for those that are hurting. I will respect you

toll-free 844.458.4637

when your opinion is different than mine and I will not attack you while sitting on my couch typing on a keyboard. This week’s pay it forward project is for you to join me with loving others, and spreading hope, and being kind, and in focusing on the good. Join me pointing towards Jesus instead of pointing out flaws. Join me in spreading love and not hate and being tolerant rather than being a tyrant. It costs nothing to be kind. It’s free to stand up for what’s right. Let’s clothe ourselves in grace, mercy, compassion and love and let’s watch our world change. We need it. Are you with me this week?

Let’s do this together Grass Lake. Peace and love.

Auntie E focuses on the positives regarding the Coronavirus…

Hello Grass Lake…It’s time to talk about sleep! Have you experienced strange dreams or have trouble falling or staying asleep? Many people, are working from home and the lack of needing to commute allows us to sleep longer. According to Matthew Walker, professor of Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, he states, that the stress of the coronavirus and being in our homes on “lockdown” is most likely to blame. The later that we sleep, the more rapid eye movement [REM] sleep; the stage of sleep where dreams occur. Some dreams can appear to be frightening because the brain processes information from our day and “sleeping” is a form of mental “overnight” therapy. The lack of sleep or losing a percentage of a sleep can be caused by the level of anxiety “we are all feeling” during this time. The difficulty for many, may be staying asleep; the to-do list starts “whirling” in our mind and “just

think, of all the things, I could accomplish before everyone wakes up.” I use to do this when my kids were young, and by 12:00PM, it would feel like it is time for bed again. Talk about adrenal overload! Not recommended! We know we all need sleep but what are some tips on getting the proper amount of sleep. - Take a hot bath before bed. - Place a lavender plant next to your bed. Lavender, known to reduce anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness. Lavender oil, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, good for minor burns, and scraps. - Before bed, read a paper book; stay away from the electronics, we all know this can impact our sleep. -If you are struggling with sleep or any other health concern contact your doctor right away. - Resource: Matthew Walker, Author: “Why We Sleep: Unlock the Power of Sleep and Dreams”

Stay Home. Stay Safe and take care of you! Love to All! We will be back together soon!

Walberg Questions Whitmer on State’s Nursing Home Policies, Federal Aid

As of June 2nd, 2020

June 2nd, 2020

Starting May 6th the Grass Lake Farmers Market will go as planed (with CDC safety guidelines). Farmers Market 4pm to 7pm

Washington, D.C.—Today, during a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) questioned Governor Whitmer about her executive order making Michigan nursing homes accept COVID-19 patients from hospitals and why it took so long to change this harmful policy. He also asked why all the federal assistance directed to the state of Michigan has yet to be spent, which the Governor did not provide an answer. Click here and here to watch Walberg’s questions. "Michigan seniors are extremely vulnerable during COVID-19 and the rising death toll among our older population is extremely troubling,” said Walberg. “Sadly, Governor Whitmer’s misguided nursing home order exposed seniors to even greater risk during this public health crisis. The Governor’s inability to answer a number of key questions before our committee today—ranging from data on nursing home deaths to where federal resources are being spent—was disappointing and inadequate. The people of our state deserve transparency and accountability."
