Coronavirus pandemic forces Michigan orchards, small farms to adapt Immigration policies, social distancing measures impact farms Article from: https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/ local/2020/04/28/coronavirus-pandemic-forcesmichigan-orchards-small-farms-to-adapt/

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – With summer and fall harvests in the near future farmers and growers are beginning to feel the effects of having to grapple with the country’s new immigration policies. “I love it when they're in bloom too. It looks so beautiful. Smells wonderful,” Abby Jacobson said standing in the middle of her orchard. Peach and cherry trees have begun to blossom as the orchard gets ready for its first harvest of asparagus in mid-May.

Jacobson and her sister Katrina own Westview Orchard in Washington Township. The orchard has been operated by their family for six generations dating back to the 1880s. She says the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has slowed operations and forced them to look ahead to the summer and fall when many visitors come to the orchard. “We’re actually using more [personal protective equipment] like the gloves and the masks. There are some jobs where we do need to be closer than 6 feet. We’re sanitizing more,” Jacobson said. “It has slowed things down when we’re transporting in vehicles out in the orchard, you know, we’re minimizing how many employees are together in any piece of equipment.” But when it comes to harvesting, Westview and most orchards and farms in the state use migratory or agricultural

work-visa labor, classified as H2A in the U.S. immigration code. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would be halting immigration, initially leaving out agricultural workers, but quickly adding many H2A visas would be exempt from the ban. Jacobson says she only has eight H2A workers on staff currently and said the initial announcement left she and her sister in a panic. Once the order was revised, Jacobson and other growers have noticed a slow down in the processing of workers and have been told their regular amount of seasonal workers were “on the way.” But the slow down has forced farms and orchards to start seeking out employees in other, less conventional ways. “It doesn’t look likely that [H2A workers] will be here any time soon. But we’re all looking at different ways to market our crops,” she said. “I know some of the growers are looking at teenage help out in the fields and maybe some folks that may be laid off.” But the problem could be bigger than not having seasonal workers. Jacobson says half of their crops are picked by visitors each year, meaning social distancing that could hinder their normal influx of “u-pickers," especially in the fall months. Westview has begun experimenting with pick up and delivery orders from their orchards and bakery which Jacobson said have helped. They’ve also given more

than 800 donuts and baked goods to local first responders and healthcare workers during the pandemic. The orchard accepts nominations from customers and chooses where to send their donations. While Jacobson said the donations and deliveries are promising, they, like many other popular orchards, are still working to navigate how people will be able to visit once the state reopens. “It’s probably going to have to be more minimized than a normal year where people like to visit the animals and kind of hang out and enjoy the day. That probably is going to have to change somewhat for their safety.” On a side note, from the Grass Lake Farmers Market: It’s a beautiful day to support local!

Article published May 14th, 1920 The Boston String Quartette. Music lovers will find in this organization of artists who will furnish the afternoon program and the prelude at night, all that is best in music, presented by distinguished musicians, some of them members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the lead3rship of Aaron Richmond. This quartette has won its preememinent position in the concert field by Its ability to present the greatest masterpieces of music so simply and strikingly that their greatness becomes apparent to those who have never studied music, as well as to trained musicians.

Why Not! The atmosphere of sociability and good cheer engendered by the repast and its accompaniments is to be but the fore-runner of better things to come. A splendid program has been prepared bringing to us at least two women speakers than which there are no better available in the state. One of these is Mrs. Peter F. Stair of Detroit, mother, director of girls’ summer camp activities, export in religious education, executive of the Methodist Childrens Home at Highland Park, and so on.

For the lecturer on this night, it is a pleasure to present a typical American, Hon. W. I. Nolan, in his lecture, “We, the People.” Mr. Nolan has for many years been prominent in public life and his is one continuous record of a fight for redblooded Americanism, of opposition to communism and radicalism of every sort which in any way threatens the free institutions of America. Because of the unusually late season, farmers should use more oat and barley seed in their planting this spring, declares Prof. J. F. Cox, head of the MAC farm crops department. Instead of the usual six to eight packs per acre, growers are advised to plant nine or ten packs to the acre. "The majority of Michigan farmers will be forces to plant their oats and barley in May this year," says Prof. Cox. Pay It Forward project Good Grief Charlie Brown! Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com Charlie Brown certainly had it right. "Good Grief"! You remember how Charlie Brown would always say this and it became known as his motto. Sometimes when I watch episodes of Charlie Brown I can't actually believe how much bullying is in it! Like whoa! I don't know how we didn't realize it when we were kids but for the love - this cartoon character in his mustard yellow black chevron printed shirt was treated like crap! No wonder his motto was "Good Grief"! But the more I thought about this funny little character with his one piece of curly hair on the top of his head and his smart-alic gang of friends that he, for some reason, kept hanging out with, the more I thought that maybe there really is something to "Good Grief. Grief is something we all experience at some point in our lives. None of us are immune to it. We will all experience grief in some form or the other, whether it is losing a parent, a child, a loved one, or a beloved pet. The word grief itself is defined in this way: "Grief is a multifaceted response to the loss of someone or something that has died, to which a bond or affection

was formed." The definition itself explains how there can be good in grief. In order for someone to be impacted by a loss there has to be some type of bond formed. There is a quote that says "Don't smile because it's over; smile because it happened". When we experience a great loss or deep grief, at least for me, it helps to be grateful that the bond and relationship happened in the first place. I remember experiencing this when we lost our dog, Max. I remember reading another quote that said "When you have a dog, you will experience hundreds of good days and then have one horrible day". When I step back and think about that, it is really hard to not be grateful for the love and bond we had. For those hundreds, and for us, thousands of good days we had with our Maxie, we are forever grateful.

There is good...... I promise you, and I know this with certainty because God experienced deep grief too and something good came from it. God experienced grief when His son died on the cross and that had to be some deep deep grief. Even though God knew it was going to happen and even though it NEEDED to happen, it doesn't mean God didn't experience grief while His son suffered. But good came from that grief and good, I assure you, can come from your grief, too.

bury it because it will come no matter what you do. Feeling and experiencing grief is something we are meant to feel. Without grief we wouldn't have an appreciation for love. Without grief we wouldn't understand the deep deep bond that is possible.

No matter what kind of grief you are experiencing, there is good in it if you choose to see it. Feel your grief. Don't push it aside. Don't

Another quote says it well, too. "It's better to love and to have lost than to never have loved at all". Do you believe that? You see, when we grieve, our hearts feel like they are literally broken. Sometimes we feel like we will never be the same again, and for some of us, the truth of the matter is..... we won't. My friends... that's because we aren't meant to be. We aren't meant to be the same. We are meant to be changed. When we experience deep sorrow and grief, it changes us and it's up to us to determine how we will be changed. We can become bitter, resentful, or angry, or we can choose to be grateful, thankful, and find the good that comes in times of grief.

I Need More…CONFIDENCE Meet Doug. As he toes the line for the final game of his senior year basketball season, he wonders if his scholarship dream is going to happen. Meet Kristin. As she graduates from college, she wonders if she’s adequate for her new job. Meet Samantha. As she faces her second round of chemotherapy, she wonders if she’s going to live. Meet Scott. As he says his vows to his wife, he silently wonders if his second marriage is going to last.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to many Memorial Day program cancellations. Because of that; The Grass Lake, American Legion & Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide a safe venue to observe our community’s Memorial Day ceremony; social 1 media.

email: pastor@stjacobgrasslake.org

Have you been there? Doug, Kristin, Samantha, Scott, you and I all have one thing in common: we need confidence. Let’s face it; there are times in life that it’s easy to be filled with doubt. Doug doubted his future. Kristin doubted her abilities. Samantha doubted her treatment. Scott doubted his love. But there’s One whose future, abilities, treatment, and love never fail. That’s the true God revealed to us in the Bible. Our confidence to face whatever life throws our way including a pandemic comes from the promises God gives us in his Word. God kept his promise of sending a Savior for everyone. As our Savior, Jesus lived perfectly to give us

toll-free 844.458.4637

confidence that his life counts for everyone. He died to make the payment necessary for our sins to be forgiven, no matter what we’ve done. He rose again to give us the confidence that one day we will be with him in heaven. And all this is God’s free gift by faith in Jesus. Because of Jesus, when we doubt our future, God reminds us, “I know the plans that I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11). When we doubt our abilities, he assures us, “I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). When we doubt our treatment plan, he promises, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). When we doubt love, his Word helps us “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18). That’s the difference only Jesus makes. When we doubt God’s protection, he promises, “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1a). Need more confidence? Jesus has what you need. You are invited to hear how Jesus can give you more confidence at St. Jacob. Confident in Christ, Pastor Kurt Uhlenbrauck

Auntie E focuses on the positives regarding the Coronavirus…

Hello Grass Lake… How is everyone doing out there? Hopefully the social isolation is becoming somewhat of the “new normal” even though many businesses are beginning to open. Yesterday, I was listening to NPR; the physician interviewed whom has been treating Covid-19 positive patients closed with “Covid-19…The Humbler of Mankind.” This statement was exactly what I have thought from the beginning. Humble, we have had to set important aspects of our humanity aside in order to “Save Lives.” We will all be back together soon…most importantly as we continue to reopen businesses and go about our daily lives it is imperative that we move outward with caution. The continued need for facemasks will be essential until there is a vaccine or unless you have the immunity. Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated yesterday, “facemasks are not a suggestion this is a deadly virus” and we must protect the lives of others. Auntie E, is in search of local sewers or anyone that would like to donate cotton fabrics and

The profits will be donated to aid in the continued needs of our community and to replace supplies. Contact: Heather Nelsoneliseinc@gmail.com Thank you to all of you in advance! Spread mixture on both sides of brisket. Cover and refrigerate overnight. To roast – Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Coat a roasting pan with non-stick vegetable spray. Place brisket in pan, fat side up. Add 1/2 cup of water. Bake, uncovered for 45 minutes until meat is nicely browned. Add water as necessary so drippings in bottom of pan don’t scorch. Place onion slices on top of brisket. Add 1 more cup of water and the bay leaves. Cover, reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake for an additional one and a half hours. Add water as necessary for plenty of pan juices. Remove brisket from pan and slice thinly. Return meat to pan, putting it back in the original shape as much as possible. Bake for another 1 1/2 hours. Do not let bake dry. Serve with pan juices.

Walberg Announces Grants for Local Health Centers to Expand Coronavirus Testing

As of May 5th, 2020

May 8, 2020

Starting May 6th the Grass Lake Farmers Market will go as planed

(with CDC safety guidelines). Farmers Market 4pm to 7pm

Jackson, MI—Congressman Tim Walberg today announced that two community health centers in Michigan’s 7th District will receive additional federal grants to increase COVID-19 testing. The Center for Family Health in Jackson County will receive $561,199 and the Family Medical Center of Michigan with locations in Lenawee and Monroe Counties will receive $372,574. "Expanding the accessibility of testing, particularly among vulnerable populations, is key to mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and keeping our communities safe and healthy. Getting more resources to boost testing capacity is welcome news for our local health centers and the patients that they serve,” said Walberg. This is the third round of grant funding that community health centers have received under federal Coronavirus response legislation. Today’s funding is made available through the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, which Walberg voted for and the House passed at the end of April. For more information and available resources, visit walberg.house. gov/coronavirus.
