Monday’s reopening went about as smoothly as the companies could have hoped after being shut down for almost two months. The plants opened and everything slowed down, but in the end, there weren’t many complaints.

On a side note, from the Grass Lake Farmers Market: It’s a beautiful day to support local!

100 Years Ago From the Archives Tremendous Realism in Walsh Photoplay Article published May 20th, 1920 The Beast. One of the most realistic scenes ever put in a motion picture is a fight for life against the raging waters of a western river, shown in “The Beast,” a William Fox production starring George Walsh. This is a scene which,

but for the athletic prowess of the star, might have been vastly more realistic than intended. When the Walsh company went to Arizona to film the picture, it was found, that the river was at its height so the director, Richard Stanton, congratulated himself that he would have a torrent equal to the ability of his star, who is an expert swimmer and athlete, and quite up to the Fox requirements as to realism.

In accordance with the scenario specifications, into the raging waters plunged Walsh with a struggling girl in his arms. The swift, swirling current bore them down stream. It was hard swimming even for Walsh. Two wet heads bobbed above the fiood. Then occurred what the scenario did not call for. The swimmers struck a rock and were separated. Down stream was swept the girl, shrieking in earnest. Walsh pursued, as fast as he could swim, caught a lock of her hair and held on. She straggled madly, making it difficult to help her; hut the hero’s effort against that treacherous current and his final rescue of the heroine was “great,” according to the breathless watchers on the bank. “Biggest hit in the picture!” cried the delighted director. Then he looked at the cameraman. The man had been so filled with excitement and admiration over what was happening in the water that he forgot to grind—and thus had missed "the biggest hit of the picture,” as the director said. However, the scene is one of the biggest thrills of a photoplay that is filled with intense moments and which shows young Walsh in a most compelling role. “The Beast” will be shown at the Liberty theatre Sunday.

Pay It Forward project Spread Seeds of Kindness

the flowers bloom and to hopefully enjoy a bountiful harvest this year!

Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

It’s another new week Grass Lakers! I don’t know about you all but we’ve been trying to spend as much time outside as we can so we aren’t cooped up inside the house so much. The farmers are planting their crops, the frogs are singing and the mosquitoes…. Well let’s just say they are bugging the crap out of me already! We purchased our outdoor flowers and garden seedlings from Designs by Judy this year and have everything in the ground and in our pots! I don’t know about you but I am ready to enjoy this summer and to see all of

This week’s pay it forward project is right in line with outdoor projects and planting flowers and this is honestly one of my favorite pay it forward projects! I did this last year and I loved it and I hope you will participate this year with me! If you are planting flowers this year and are out at Meijer or if you are buying your blooms at “Designs by Judy” this year, grab an extra hanging basket or geranium and pay it forward to someone! Since we are all still in quarantine and a lot of us are still working from home, you may have to get creative with how you are going to pay it forward and share! Here is what you do – Buy an extra bloom or hanging basket and attach a notecard that reads “Something

special for you – Don’t forget to pay it forward!” and drop it off on someone’s front porch or leave it on the hood of someone’s car in town the next time you are running to the grocery store! This project is inexpensive, it’s super easy, and it doesn’t take a lot of time and can be done with your kiddos to get them involved, too. I hope this week you will be inspired by the spring and that you will grab a flower for yourself and then one to pass along to someone else! Some people could really use an extra smile and thoughtful gesture right now and this project could

really make someone’s day! It’s spring and planting season and this project comes at the perfect time to spread seeds of kindness to others in our community!

Happy planting Grass Lake!

Because of that; The Grass Lake, American Legion & Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide a safe venue to observe our community’s Memorial Day ceremony; social 1 media. As in past years the event will begin at the downtown Veteran’s Memorial followed by a procession to Maple Grove (west) Cemetery for a short graveside service. WHAT’S UP WITH GRASS LAKE SCHOOLS? Grass Lake community schools are celebrating the 2020 graduates- via social media. It’s the sign of the times. The newly liberation motives, too. And word of the works has been received by Grass Lake. It’s a number’s game; Seniors-Covid-19 the number. Graduates sent out portraits - 105 of them, to be exact- for solidaryon Michigan Ave, where families and fans can see and help to send them off to higher levels. Blue skies and energy light up the occasion for “Today is the first day of the rest of your life!” Teachers and Administers encourage the new graduates. They pitched the sign along our Village as well.

Brian Thompson is the Principal at Grass Lake High School. He set up the numbers with the portraits. Many hands make light work! “We thought it would bring them[the grads] up-who have waited for four years and they deserve it” Thompson said. Sweating along the avenue admiring the signs, and the potential they held. Maybe the class of 2020 will learn the drill: Live in the light and the day will not surprise you. Congratulations to all seniors!

Auntie E focuses on the positives regarding the Coronavirus…

Hello Grass Lake…It’s time to talk about sleep! Have you experienced strange dreams or have trouble falling or staying asleep? Many people, are working from home and the lack of needing to commute allows us to sleep longer. According to Matthew Walker, professor of Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, he states, that the stress of the coronavirus and being in our homes on “lockdown” is most likely to blame. The later that we sleep, the more rapid eye movement [REM] sleep; the stage of sleep where dreams occur. Some dreams can appear to be frightening because the brain processes information from our day and “sleeping” is a form of mental “overnight” therapy. The lack of sleep or losing a percentage of a sleep can be caused by the level of anxiety “we are all feeling” during this time. The difficulty for many, may be staying asleep; the to-do list starts “whirling” in our mind and “just

think, of all the things, I could accomplish before everyone wakes up.” I use to do this when my kids were young, and by 12:00PM, it would feel like it is time for bed again. Talk about adrenal overload! Not recommended! We know we all need sleep but what are some tips on getting the proper amount of sleep. - Take a hot bath before bed. - Place a lavender plant next to your bed. Lavender, known to reduce anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness. Lavender oil, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, good for minor burns, and scraps. - Before bed, read a paper book; stay away from the electronics, we all know this can impact our sleep. -If you are struggling with sleep or any other health concern contact your doctor right away. - Resource: Matthew Walker, Author: “Why We Sleep: Unlock the Power of Sleep and Dreams”

Stay Home. Stay Safe and take care of you! Love to All! We will be back together soon!

Walberg to Pelosi: The House Should Keep Working May 15, 2020

Latest Grass Lake Calendar Updates As of May 5th, 2020

Starting May 6th the Grass Lake Farmers Market will go as planed

(with CDC safety guidelines). Farmers Market 4pm to 7pm

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) today voted against Speaker Pelosi’s partisan proxy voting proposal and called on the House of Representatives to safely get back to work. H.Res. 965 ignores more than 200 years of precedent to put in place an untested system that undermines the constitutional responsibilities and deliberative process of the institution. "In the midst of extraordinary times, the House should stand and be counted, not stand on the sidelines. Voting by proxy is not going to cut it,” said Walberg. “Changing centuries-old rules without bipartisan consensus is concerning, and so is the top-down push to weaken the voice of the people and their elected representatives. Connecting animals in need with people who care.

Linus Linus is a gorgeous, front declawed, 9-year-old cat. He needs time to make friends with strangers, but once he does, he is a lovebug who loves to lounge around and soak up the sun. I am neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on shots as well as tested negative for FeLV. If you’re interested in Linus please feel free to schedule an appointment to visit him at Cascades Humane Society. Please call us at 517.787.7387 ext. #128/#110, Tuesday through Saturday, noon-to-6pm, to make an appointment to visit with Linus.

Goldie This dog is a love. He spent the first part of his life on a chain. If there are kids at home they should be over the age of five. Since his days on a chain, Goldie has learned to be a house dog, but we’re looking for an experienced owner to adopt him. He is just shy of 5 years old, housebroken, neutered, up-to-date on his shots, microchipped and tested negative for Heartworm. He shows a strong prey drive, so no cats for this boy. He can be picky about his dog friends and seems to do better with females. Goldie is a big, lovable mush! His adoption fee is $150.

Meals are free, no requirement to be a student of Grass Lake Community Schools. Any individual can pick up the food, even if you live in another district. Meals are intended to be taken home for consumption as there will no areas available to eat at distribution sites. If questions, contact Food Services Director Kelly Bolton at 517-867-5597.
