Walberg Announces Two Coronavirus Relief Funding initiative's Covering Local Area Colleges and Students & Local Health Centers By Rep. Tim Walberg Jackson, MI—Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) announced that local area colleges and universities will receive more than $22 million in grants to help students who have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The emergency relief funding is made available as a result of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed by Congress at the end of March. “These are tough times for everyone, and college campuses and students in our area are no exception,” said Walberg. “Many students have felt significant disruptions in their academic and personal financial life, and these grants will help provide much-needed relief at a time of great uncertainty.

The CARES Act includes several provisions to provide support for education, including the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Of the amount allocated to each institution, at least 50 percent must be reserved to provide students with emergency financial aid grants to help cover expenses related to disruptions to their educations due to the Coronavirus, including things like food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care. Grant Amounts to Area Colleges Adrian College – $1,752,186 Jackson College – $3,892,134 Lansing Community College – $5,804,315 Monroe County Community College – $1,300,516 Olivet College – $1,315,786 Siena Heights University – $1,545,879 Spring Arbor University – $1,581,268 Washtenaw Community College – $4,968,890

Jackson, MI — With the world coming to a screeching halt, it seems that everything has been cancelled. Girl Scouts, however, is never cancelled.

Girls are enjoying this wide array of virtual activities, while planning for in-person adventures, troop activities, field trips, and community service projects, when all is safe for interaction. As part of that planning, girls are continuing to participate in the cookie program, the largest entrepreneurial program for girls in the world!

Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan has pivoted our program model to allow all girls to participate in virtual Girl Scout programming, including badge earning activities and the Cookie Program. Content posted daily on our Facebook page provides activities, education, and fun for girls ages 5-17.

Girls throughout Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan have digital cookie stores, from which you can order cookies to be shipped right to your door. You also have the chance to donate to the girl’s Hometown Hero effort, which supports the purchase of cookies for local frontline healthcare

Jackson, MI—Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) announced that two community health centers in Michigan’s 7th District will receive nearly $2 million in federal grants to respond to the Coronavirus. The Center for Family Health in Jackson County will receive $1,039,385 and the Family Medical Center of Michigan with locations in Lenawee and Monroe Counties will receive $839,300. “The Coronavirus has placed an enormous strain on every facet of our health care system,” said Walberg. “Community health centers are on the front lines of providing patient-centered care, especially during a public health emergency. This additional funding comes at a critical time, and I will continue my efforts to ensure Michigan’s health care workers and providers have the necessary resources to combat the Coronavirus.” These federal grants were authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which Walberg supported and helped pass into law at the end of March. For more information about the CARES Act, visit walberg. house.gov/cares-act. workers and first responders. These purchases support girls right in your community, and ensure that girls reach the goals they have set for themselves and their troops. Anyone interested in purchasing cookies from a girl right here in our community can email gshom@gshom.org. Girl Scouts have always risen to the challenge, helping out during the Spanish influenza in 1918 and during both World Wars. Today’s Girl Scouts are no different. We have seen girls across our great state doing what they can to make a positive difference in their world around them, through creating homemade masks, donating cookies, and planning socially distanced community service opportunities.

Pay It Forward project Spreading Some Hope with Happy Mail Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com Happy Easter week Grass Lake! We just finished celebrating the resurrection of Jesus this week! What a wonderful thing! Hope is alive! I hope you all had a blessed Easter Sunday and maybe even the Easter bunny left some chocolate rabbit ears and jelly beans for you too.

I hope everyone is hanging in there and doing well despite what our world is going through. I have heard so many stories of people paying it forward to others during this time and it has really given hope to others. I have a pay it forward project we can all do this week together! We have done this one in the past but it is really perfect for the times we are in. This is a great project to get your kids involved in, too!!

All you will need is some paper, crayons, markers, or colored pencils along with an envelope and stamp! It’s time to make some cards y’all! It’s the perfect time, while we are being socially distant, to send some cards to family, friends, neighbors, and teachers! You don’t need to be artsy to spread some love to others! Let’s be creative this week and make homemade cards and send them to others to check in on them and to let them know we are thinking about them. It’s a cheap, easy, and fun way to pay it forward and spread hope!

Have fun with this project this week Grass Lake and stay healthy and safe!

St Lawrence Canal: A bold Proposal by US and Canada Article published April15th, 1920 Construction of a ship canal from the Great Lakes to the sea, utilizing the St. Lawrence river, will be widely agitated during the coming year and undoubtedly will be a live issue in congress. year ago. Canada took similar action with the result that an International joint commission was formed which is now making surveys with a view to submitting both to the congress of the United States and the parliament of Canada as to the cost and feasibility. The organization chiefly interested in pursuing the canal is known as the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Tidewater association, composed of 14 states -- namely Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado

The Saint Lawrence Seaway, as proposed, will contain a system of locks, canals, and channels in Canada and the United States that will permit oceangoing vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes of North America, as far inland as Duluth, Minnesota at the western end of Lake Superior. The proposed name is for the Saint Lawrence River, which flows from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean. Legally, the seaway will extend from Montreal, Quebec, to Lake Erie and will include the Welland Canal. The Saint Lawrence River portion of

the seaway will not be a continuous canal; rather, it will consist of several stretches of navigable channels within the river, a number of locks, and canals along the banks of the Saint Lawrence River to bypass several rapids and dams. A number of the locks, as proposed, will be managed by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation in Canada, and others in the United States by the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation; the two bodies together advertise the seaway as part of "Highway H2O". The section of the river from Montreal to the Atlantic is under Canadian jurisdiction, regulated by the offices of Transport Canada in the Port of Quebec.

Obituary

Sarah Raymond Raymond, (Marcella), Sarah A. 98, of Grass Lake, MI and previously Jackson, MI died shortly after midnight on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at home surrounded by family. She married Earl Jason Raymond in 1947 in Ypsilanti and moved to Jackson, MI. They had three children and were divorced in 1957. Sarah worked as a court stenographer and legal secretary before working 30+ years at Commonwealth as a Data Processing Supervisor. She will be forever remembered for her hard work ethics and strong family love and support, a true role model. She never drove a car and walked to work. She was also the best grandma!

To combat the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan, Governor Whitmer signed the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order. Auntie E's Thoughtful Tips By: Heather Nelson, BS, Certified Health Coach, and Entrepreneur. Auntie E focuses on the positives regarding the Coronavirus…

Grass Lake…I hope everyone is doing the best they can during these times of uncertainty. The most certain aspect is Michigander’s, are stepping in with helping hands during times of need. Our state and government officials have “rose to the occasion” supporting our state in my opinion. Though personally, have not received a check for being off work as I was not an essential worker. My situation is no different than the rest of us; therefore, I do my part in applying and following the protocols for application and remain patient knowing that the rest is out of my control. So, what has Auntie E been up too… As I mentioned in a previous week;

I am making washable face masks. The pattern took me a few weeks to determine a safe and easy way to produce as many facemasks as humanly possible. The patterns are determined and now I am “cookin”. The masks are made for the general public and essential workers. The masks seal very nicely to the face and have a pocket for a coffee filter, a vacuum cleaner bag cut into the shape of the mask or simply an additional layer of washable fabric. My mission… stems from being immunocompromised myself but also for an effective alternative to the disposable facemasks that should be isolated to frontline health care works.

Auntie E’s Tip for the Week…During the Pandemic of 1918, there was no vaccine for the H1N1 just as there is “not yet” with Covid-19. In 1918, household supplies were all they had for protection; so today I urge you to use your household supplies “if you haven’t already” to protect your loved ones.

May the Light of Peace be with you and Love to all!

I Need More…STRENGTH After several attempts of twisting and tapping, the lid just wouldn’t budge. “Honey, can you open this for me?” Her teenage son is eager to flex his muscles. He opens the jar and hands it back to his mother. Life is sometimes like that jar, isn’t it? Sometimes we just don’t have the strength we need to tackle what’s in front of us. Not the strength it takes to move a piano or change a flat tire, but the strength we need to raise our children or stay married to someone who is difficult to live with. We need the strength it takes to go to work and deal with people who are rude, inconsiderate, and lazy, or to walk to the mailbox that contains bills we’ll have difficulty paying. I need more strength! More strength to fight the invisible enemy of COVID-19. More strength to practice social distancing. More strength for patience and understanding as we are directed to stay at home for numerous days. “Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth . . . He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak….Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:28-31). What should we do when we need more strength? Hand that jar over to the LORD. He has

Page 5

all the strength we need and so much more. After all, he is the One who created the earth and everything in it. More than that, this strong, wise, loving God came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. The all-powerful God came in human weakness to rescue us from sin and death. He was condemned and crucified. Weakness, right? No! Strength! Jesus used his strength to remain on that cross until every last sin of ours had been paid for. His empty tomb proves it. “Jesus was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4). Death has been defeated! The guilt of sin before God has been removed! By trusting in Jesus, life in heaven is waiting for us. Need more strength? The One who created the earth has it. The One who died and rose for you has it. He is the One who gives us the strength to face each day with fresh confidence. Find that strength in his Word. And then be ready to soar. Be ready to soar on eagles’ wings with renewed strength and through every challenge of life! Be ready to soar on eagles’ wings to the home that Jesus has prepared for you in heaven! Receiving strength through the risen Lord, Pastor Kurt Uhlenbrauck

Rep. Lightner: Governor’s new ‘stay home’ order a step in the wrong direction By Rep. Sarah Lightner of Springport State Rep. Sarah Lightner today said the Governor’s extended and expanded ‘stay home’ executive order is too restrictive, putting more limitations on Michigan job providers and infringing on residents’ constitutional rights. “I don’t envy the position the Governor is in at all, and with that in mind I do extend a certain amount of grace to her,” said Lightner, of Springport. “However, the Legislature is ready and willing to help her navigate this tough situation – she doesn’t have to be doing this alone. I heard her say on national television that we need to take a more unified approach to combatting COVID-19. Well, it’s time to step up to the plate, Governor.” Gov. Whitmer extended her ‘stay home’ order through the month of April, and also placed more limitations on job providers. She ordered that stores no longer sell what she considers non-essential items and block off those areas so customers cannot access them. The Governor also is declining to adjust Michigan’s guidelines to those issued by the federal government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency that would allow more Michiganders to safely return to work while following social distancing guidelines. “My top priority right now is to protect public health, and I agree we must continue social distancing and similar measures to promote that goal,” Lightner said. “But in this latest order, the Governor is refusing to take common-sense steps that would allow some Michiganders to safely return to work and provide for their families without compromising public health.” The state is already feeling the effects of these closures with falling sales and income tax

revenues. This will lower revenues headed to the school aid fund and the general fund. “We already know that we are going to have to make some tough choices in the budget going forward, and that’s completely understandable,” said Lightner. “But as a member of the Appropriations committee, I want to see real effort to help mitigate these budget shortfalls, not encourage them. If we don’t start to act now, we’re going to leave the COVID-19 crisis and enter right into a fiscal crisis here in Michigan.” In addition, the Legislature has appealed to the Governor several times to issue new clarifications on these orders to allow those businesses who can safely work to do so, like landscaping companies and greenhouses. “While the Governor is unilaterally deeming certain people and products as essential, I contend that every job is essential to the families that rely on those wages to put food on their tables. In the meantime, these residents are having to work twice as hard just to get their phone calls answered by the unemployment office,” said Lightner. The Unemployment Insurance Agency has seen a large uptick in claims since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, due to many businesses and jobs being shuttered. As a result, the system has experienced frequent delays, hang-ups, and general distress from the high volume of claims. “This is no doubt a challenging time for everybody,” Lightner stated. “But that doesn’t mean that those who have been laid off should be told time and again by the Governor ‘we’ll get to you eventually,’ all while phoning in more potential layoffs with no plan to transition people back to work safely.”

By State Sen. Lana Theis

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Lana Theis released the following statement on Thursday after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-42 was issued to extend her “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order until April 30. “Earlier this week, I voiced my support for extending Michigan’s emergency declaration, in part because it is necessary for our state to continue to receive support from the federal government. I also agree that, for most, a stay-at-home order makes sense at this time and is beneficial to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. “However, like many residents in Livingston and Washtenaw counties, I am extraordinarily frustrated by restrictions on

“Thousands of people are now seeking unemployment benefits when they would like nothing better than to get back to work. If they can do so safely, they should be allowed to. We need to strike a better balance of protecting public health and getting Michigan back to work safely. I am hopeful that the governor will rethink this order and make commonsense revisions as a first step to getting our state back in business.” Here at CHS we’re trying to adjust to our new normal, courtesy of Covid-19, along with you and the rest of the world.

This includes workers who, in the course of doing their business, do not come into contact with others in a way that would violate CDC guidelines. As is the case in neighboring states, there should be exemptions in Michigan for workers in construction, landscaping, and other lines of work where there is little interpersonal contact.
