“We were really reluctant to do it, but we decided to close the store temporarily,” said Kerene Morrissey, president of The Copper Nail’s board. “It’s really in the best interest of the community.”

locations are: downtown at the Events Pavilion on Brown Street; eastward at Rank Road and Grass Lake Road; and westward at Harmony Baptist Church on Spring Arbor Road. What an amazing community is Grass Lake! Local eateries—ten of them in the Grass Lake area—are offering food take-out services, as well as Frank’s Shop-Rite. When asked whether Frank’s will be able to keep providing our community with food and other supplies, Frank Bednarsky, Jr. responded, “You bet. We’ll be here.”

What’s wrong with this picture? Yes, even The Copper Nail is closed for a while.

And so another business in downtown Grass Lake decided this week to shut its doors until the number of COVID-19 cases becomes clear and the upward trajectory of the virus starts a downward trend. In the meantime, everyone in the community who can is stepping up to help. For example, the School’s meals program, headed up by Food Services Director Kelly Bolton, continues to provide for those who need breakfast or lunch, even as the schools are closed. If you see the familiar yellow school buses still out and about during the week, it’s because School staff are bringing takehome breakfast and lunch meals to three pickup sites, between 11:30 and 12:30, Monday through Friday. According to the School’s website, these meals are free to all children, with no requirement to be a student of Grass Lake Community Schools, and any individual can pick up the food. The pick-up

The Village of Grass Lake offices are closed to the public, says Village Clerk Star Mead. “But we are still here working. If someone really needs to meet with us, they can call and make an appointment.” People can make payments online or in the Village’s drop box.

Frequent customers, especially the smaller variety, are used to seeing the fairy door near The Copper Nail’s front door. Maybe the fairies are self-quarantined for a bit now, too?

Check out the most current information on meeting schedules and more on the Village’s brand spanking new website, www. villageofgrasslake.com. It’s a similar story for Grass Lake Charter Township, whose offices also closed beginning Monday, March 16. According to the Township’s website, “Any items for the building department can be placed in the drop box in the front of the building and will be

processed in a timely manner.” The Grass Lake Senior Center has temporarily cancelled its events, so senior citizens can safely selfquarantine at home. If there are needs not being met during this challenging time, seniors can call (517) 522-8466, and if necessary leave a message. According to the Senior Center’s website, “If you need any assistance, our staff will be monitoring the phone and messages to help you in anyway possible.” For those self-quarantined at home, maybe this is the time to start that book or jigsaw puzzle you bought at The Copper Nail. It’s always fun to find out if, indeed, some of the puzzle pieces are missing. Or if—surprise, surprise—all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. As they often eventually do. Testing for the COVID-19 virus in Jackson County has gradually begun. According to its website, the Jackson County Health Department is working closely with Henry Ford Allegianceonthe COVID-19 situation in Jackson County to offer critical resources to its citizens. This includes drive-through testing sites for people with symptoms of the virus and with risk factors.

The first such drive-through screening site has been set up in a parking lot at One Jackson Square, 100 East Michigan Avenue, in downtown Jackson. To see if you qualify for such a screening, people can call 24/7 The Henry Ford MyCare Advice Line, 313-874-7500.

Rich Oil Pool Found Near Dundee ...

Article published March 18th, 1920 ... Dundee and vicinity wos all excited Monday evening, when word came from the Frank Rowe farm, west of town, that a rich pool of oil had been discovered when the well, which had been in process of drilling for the past several months was “shot.” Many different stories were brought in. Some told of a gusher, others said it was a 76-barrel well and still others called it a 25-barrel proposition.

In reality it has not yet been determined just how good a well has been discovered. That will, not be known until the pumps have been at work for a few days. A report for the Grass Lake Times visited the well Tuesday evening in an effort to get a true statement of the oil prospects for the readers of the paper. Mr. Miller, who drilled the well, when asked what he thought of the prospects, said that he believed the well would pump 50 barrels a day, if not more. He also made the statement that in his opinion this first well was only the forerunner of many more and that this section of Michigan is due for a wonderful era of prosperity as the result.

Much speculation on the newly discovered oil field has been evident since last fall when agents were quietly picking, up leases after it was deemed that a test well was to be drilled. Drilling began about the middle of November. The well was brought in at a depth of 2,243 feet. The shooting in the new well late Monday evening was witnessed by a crowd of 1,000. Farmers from all over Southern Michigan were on hand from early morning. The Shooting was scheduled to take place shortly after noon, but it did not occur until 5:15 p.m.

A shot composed of 230 quarts of nitrglycerine had been brought from Gibsonburg, Ohio. In the afternoon hundreds of business men from Toledo, Bowling Green, Cleveland, Franklin, Pa., and other points drove to the Rowe farm. Farmers in Monroe and Lenawee counties have long believed there is oil under their land. They appealed to the office of the Michigan geologist, who sent representatives over the territory. It developed in the drilling that the same formation that forms the Ohio field, which was prominent in former years, exists in this field. It is estimated that nearly 100,000 acres of land have been placed under lease. Demand for leases became active Tuesday after it was learned that a good sized oil well had been brought in.

Pay It Forward project Controlling What We Can Control Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

Hey Grass Lake! How is everyone doing with the “40 items in 40 days” challenge? Are you cleaning out those closets and putting aside items to donate? It’s always such a great feeling to get organized as we head into the summer season. Last week we also talked about National Reconciliation Day which is coming up on 4/2 and I encouraged you all to start praying and thinking about that one person that you need to make amends with. I hope you are praying about this and taking steps towards reconciling with that long lost friend or family member that you haven’t spoken with in a while. There is so much happening right now in our country and around the world isn’t there? This global pandemic with

Covid-19 has put much of the world, including our nation, into a frenzy. From people at Sam’s Club literally fist fighting over the last toilet paper package to grocery store shelves being gutted over the past week, to schools in at least 8 states closing down; this is a real scary time in our world.

I think it’s important for us to remember during this time of crisis, that we focus on what we can control instead of what we can’t control. We cannot control what other countries are doing. We cannot control what other people are doing. We can’t control what our own government is doing. We can only control what we are doing. It’s easy to fall prey to societal and media scare tactics

We had our first team meeting for the Teen Building Workshop this past Saturday. We had a great time getting to know each other and took some time looking at some of the living conditions of people that are in need of help. We also started on creating our Vision Statement by looking at companies, organizations, and people that succeed when they seem to be going against the grain of the normal approach to doing things. We used the Golden Circle approach to look at the differences in how these companies and people communicate compared to how we normally communicate. These companies and people speak to the "Why" they're doing what they're doing. It's what they believe in, which reaches the parts of our brain that controls our behavior, loyalty, and decision making. As apposed to the way we normally communicate which speaks to the "What" we're doing, and talks to the part of the brain that's responsible for rational and analytical thought.

because it’s plastered all over the news and on every TV and radio station right now. In my opinion, it is good to be informed, but, it’s also good to not feed into mass hysteria. This is what my family is doing and what I am recommending. Listen to the news in the morning or evening to get the latest and most updated information and then shut it off. Turn on some worship music or put on a few of your favorite movies and block out the noise. Choose to control what you can control which is washing your hands, staying in with your family instead of going to restaurants or being social, and focus on the other things that are in your control. I think this is a great time for our families to come together and pray for our country and the world. Pray for the health of our nation, pray for the well-being of other countries, and pray that we come out of this stronger and unified. It’s time to bust out the board games y’all! Spend time with your family, work on home projects

that you’ve been putting off, and cook dinner together, watch movies as a family, and most importantly, lean on each other and support one another. Call your elderly neighbors to check on them. If you are heading to the grocery store for milk, see if your neighbor needs some, too. We can still pay it forward to others during this time, and in my opinion, it’s even more important that we do that now. I hope you join me in this. If you have anxiety or are stressing out, I understand. It’s a stressful time. Take deep breaths, pray to the God of the universe and focus on the fact that God is with us, He goes before us and He knows what lies ahead. Control what you can control and for the love, share your toilet paper.

Have a great week Grass Lake! Stay safe.

Why is Apple Computers so innovative year after year? It's not what they do. They make computers. Dell and HP make computers too. It's not how they do it. Their products are beautifully designed and easy to use. Other's have beautifully designed and easy to use products. It's why they do it. "We believe in challenging the status quo and doing this differently". They tell us "Why" they're doing what they're doing. And it's not just for us, it's for themselves. They create a culture who's bought into this purpose of challenging the status quo and doing it differently. And because they've bought into this purpose, they work at it thru blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen. And because of their belief in their purpose, and they communicate that belief to us, we buy into it. Which is the reason we feel comfortable buying an MP3 player, or a Phone, or a TV from them, when they're a computer company. Other computer companies have tried to sell products other then computers like PDAs or TVs and they've failed, even though they're fully qualified to make these products. As a consumer we never bought into "Why" they were doing it. A Vision Statement focuses on the future and the "Why" we're doing what we're doing. So this was a good spring board for jumping into creating our Vision Statement, which we'll do at our next meeting.

With the COVID-19 outbreak officially being recognized as a pandemic, the health and safety of our community is the top priority. As a community we want to act fast, to “flatten the curve” as early as possible, to help reduce the impact of this pandemic across Jackson County and beyond. CDC guidelines can be found at the Village of Grass Lake website- https://www.villageofgrasslake.com/. As we navigate through this challenging time, here are some community resources that are available (and we will continue to update as we learn of more): ● Grass Lake Methodist Church food pantry, 449 E Michigan Ave, is open by appointment (517) 522-8040 ○ They currently have a very limited supply of items. If you would like to donate non-perishable food items, diapers and toiletries, to the food pantry, they can be dropped off at Roaming Goat anytime. ○ Grass Lake food pantry items will be available Thursday, March 19th and Thursday, March 26th at all three free breakfast and lunch locations. Please email your needs ahead of time, so we can ensure we have all items at ourgrasslake@gmail.com ● The Grass Lake Senior Center can be reached at (517) 522-8466 for hours and up to date information. ● Grass Lake Community Pharmacy offers and encourages FREE prescription delivery service (517) 522- 4100 ● Napoleon Feed Mill is delivering animal feed, upon request (517) 5368311 ● The Computer Source is offering free delivery of groceries and pharmacy needs (734) 846-0840 ● The Village of Grass Lake offices will remain open to Village staff but will be closed to the public until March 27th. The Village is requesting the public to use the online payment feature on the Village website https:// villageofgrasslake.com or drop the payment in the drop box. (517) 5224550 ○ The Village Depa1rtment of Public Works (DPW) is working hard to keep our town healthy and safe. Their main goal is to keep the township running and employees safe. They are working closely with other agencies such as EAGLE, the Michigan Municipal League and the Michigan Department of Health. (517) 522-4550 ● Farmers State Bank will close its lobby until further notice, and are encouraging customers to use drive up, ATM, online & mobile banking options. (517) 985-1062 CANCELLATIONS/CLOSINGS/POSTPONEMENTS: • Grass Lake Chamber Spring Business Expo has been cancelled. • Grass Lake Warrior Club Cash-O-Rama has been postponed to May 15th. • The Jackson District Library, including the Grass Lake Branch will be closed at least until April 6th. You can still utilize the digital downloads for books to your e-reader at http://myjdl.com.

Exercise can help with mental and emotional stress issues. ○ The Grass Lake Road Runners are meeting for small group walks/runs at 7:45a every Saturday at Roaming Goat. Follow them on Facebook and let them know if you would like to see additional meet up times. https:/www.facebook.com/ GLRoadRunners/ ○ A Moment on the Mat is offering online based yoga https:// www.facebook.com/momentonthemat/ Grass Lake based Michigan-Online Therapy (517) 436-0229 suggests that a lot of anxiety is circulating right now around health, overall uncertainty, potential financial loss, childcare stressors, etc. During this time the single most important thing is to create a feeling of safety for yourself and your children. Simple steps that can have a huge impact; 1. Structure- sit down this weekend to create a flexible outline of next week and discuss expectations. 2. Connect, Connect, Connect- reach out to local friends, family in person (when possible) and through skype. 3. Check in daily with a loved one or through journaling- What went well today? Redirect attention to some of the positive aspects of life. 4. Reach out for additional support when needed www.psychologytoday. com (in person or online sessions are available, filter by insurance and zip code) No one knows how this is going to shake out, but our best strategy is to work together and stay connected. As a community, we can, and will get through this together. We will continue to update resources and action items as they become available. If you have additional comments or concerns ● 211 for County wide assistance ● 911 for immediate emergencies ● Grass Lake Fire Department (517) 522-4200 ● Village of Grass Lake (517) 522-4550 ● Grass Lake Township (517) 522-8464

In the coming weeks, the hospitality industry is expected to be hit the hardest. Please make sure to continue to stimulate your local economy and support local businesses, including our local eateries. Although they can no longer offer seating, please check them out for take-out, curbside and buying gift certificates
