For safe measures I’m required to fasten to my belt a PPD, a personal protection device, or “panic button” to summon a guard should a situation arise. I’m told it’s a necessary precaution though veteran teachers tell me that that’s a rarity. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In order to qualify for the PEI students must possess at least a GED, earn satisfactory scores on JC placement tests, have six months of clear conduct, and be 18 months of more from their release dates. Many of them attend classes year round. Everybody makes mistakes in and outside the prison. My students aren’t shy about explaining their situations to me. Prior experience has given me the capacity to listen and identify and not to judge. When it comes down to it, I tell them, we’re all lifelong learners. No student becomes the master and class is always in session in or outside the walls.

Pay It Forward project Delicious Days Ahead…

Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com There are about 4 weeks left of the “40 Days of Giving Challenge” and only 4 weeks left till Easter this year which also means only 4 weeks left to stock up on black jelly beans and sugary peeps before they are whisked away until next year! As we head deeper into our “40 Days of Giving Challenge” where you are picking 1 item each day to set aside to donate, I thought it would be fun to see what “National Days” are around the corner. There are some fun ones coming up like “National One Cent Day” on 4/1 and “National Empanada Day” on 4/8 and one of my favorites, “National Hairball Awareness Day” on 4/26. Yep. Not even joking on that last one. As I was glancing through the national days coming up in April, I noticed there are several delicious days right around the corner. Now, by delicious I don’t mean days that will satisfy your sweet tooth or fill your hunger pains. I don’t mean days where you sit on the couch stuffing your

face with buttery popcorn or indulging on a delectable 7 layer chocolate ganache cake (and now I want cake). By delicious, I mean days that will satisfy your soul. I’m talking about days that will ease a burden and lighten the weight on your shoulders and days that I would equate to being kissed by a sweet cuddly puppy or taking in the most amazing pink sunrise that actually takes your breath away. I am talking about moments like pressing your fingers through a cloud or catching a butterfly on the tip of your nose. Those are the kind of delicious days we have just around the corner and I’d love for you to embark on a journey with me as we satisfy, not our sweet tooth but as we happify our souls, one national day at a time.

can be a wonderful thing. Do you have someone in your life that you need to make amends with? Maybe it is an old friend and you had a falling out because of a miscommunication or maybe it’s a family member that you haven’t talked to in years because of past family issues or trouble. Is there someone in your life that you can’t get off your mind; someone that is always in the back of your head that you know you eventually need to reach out to but you’ve been putting it off because it might be awkward or hard?

I am going to unwrap one of these soul happifying (yes I made that word up) days here today. There is a national day coming up soon that is not only a great way to pay it forward to someone but it’s a day that could have life changing implications. Are you ready for it?! Here it is: April 2nd is “National Reconciliation Day”.

Guess what friends? 4/2 is “National Reconciliation Day”. April 2nd is just a few weeks away and if you have had this relationship weighing heavy on your heart or if it’s been a burden on your shoulders, there is hope. There is light at the end of the tunnel and….. we can do it together. Do you know how sometimes it can be scary to do something or to take a leap but when someone else is willing to jump off that dock with you or willing to take a flying leap out of that airplane, too, it makes it a little easier? Let’s do this together. Let’s jump. Let’s harness up and take a flying leap out of that plane together on “National Reconciliation Day”. If you do it, I will, too. If I do it, maybe others in our

DON’T STOP READING! Don’t you do it! I know! I know! Some of you are thinking, “Soul happifying deliciousness? More like soul crushing black cloud grossness”! Stay with me here guys and gals. Reconciliation with someone you love

community will join in. Whether it’s been years since you’ve spoken or maybe this is a more recent divide, now is the time to free yourself from the heavy load and reach out to reconcile. Reconciliation can be in many different forms and it can look differently for everyone. Maybe for you it’s a phone call being made or maybe you write a letter or maybe you go all out and go and visit the person. Either way, if it’s something you know needs to happen and something that you can’t get off your mind, it’s time to rip off that band-aid and jump out of that plane. Reconciling with someone you love can be freeing. It can be like that beautiful brightly colored double rainbow that you saw once or it can feel like a warm morning mist splashing your face as you welcome a new day. It can be delicious friends. Finger licking-mouth watering delicious. Let’s pay it forward and enjoy the sweet blissful taste of closing one chapter and starting a new one with someone that means so much to us. We have a few weeks to think about this but most importantly to PRAY about this. Pray for your heart to see the good in that person. Pray that God gives you a heart of forgiveness and peace. I hope deliciousness is heading your soon friends and that you can embrace this opportunity that we have before us on April 2nd. I would love to hear about your experience with this pay it forward project so email me your story at Brenda@ thegrasslaketimes.com.

100 Years Ago From the Archives Various Attacks on the Prohibition Amendment and the Volstead Law Published March 11, 1920

Judge Geiger at Milwaukee legalized the manufacture and sale of 2.5 percent beer in Wisconsin on the ground that each state has the sovereign right and police power to fix its own standards to what constitutes an intoxicating beverage. The prohihition amendment providing for concurrent power of congress and the several states to enforce the amendment. Judge Geiger held that state legislation in the matter could not be overturned by an act of congress; he found section I, title 2 of the Volstead act unconstitutional.

New Jersey’s legislature got Into action the same day, and after an exciting debate the senate passed the house bill legalizing the manufacture, sale and transportation of beverages containing not more than 3.5 per cent alcohol by volume. In order to avoid complications the measure was altered so that it does not go Into effect until the termination of the state of war with Germany, and severe penalties were fixed for its violation. In this shape, it was signed by Governor Edwards, who issued a statement that he approved. It not because he was against prohibition hut because he sought to defend the ancient American liberty, The the New Yorklegislature a bill was introduced to legalize beverages

containing 6 per cent alcohol, and a resolution, was adopted providing for an investigation of the Anti-Saloon league by the judiciary committee. License was the issue in elections in Massachusetts and Vermont, and in both states many towns that had been dry for years were voted wet. On Thursday New Jersey came to bat again with a suit filed for the state by its attorney general in the United States Supreme court, attacking the constitutionality of the prohibition amendment on the grounds that it was improperly drawn, that in 21 states the legistators have not ratified it as provided for by the state constitution and that there is no power in force to propose a constitutional amendment regulating The habits and morals of the people.

Politics of course have entered inthe the prohibition fight. The wet Democrats of Illinois already have launched the presidential boom on Governor Edwards of New Jersey and have filed the necessary petition that puts his name on the april 3 direct primary ballot. The real leaders of the party in that state, however, say this movement will not amount to much and that the delegates to San Francisco probably will not be instructed.

constitutional amendment and calling for the restoration of states' rights.

Kalamazoo—Under the rule “three times and out” Dorothy Cave, 10 years old must surely be at the end of her misfortunes. While running upstairs the child fell and broke both bones of her right leg. When three years old she blinded herself in one eye by running the point of a knife into her eyeball. A year ago she was knocked down and run over by an automobile. Port Huron—Frank Hoffer, of Auburn Hills, was fined $600 with an alternative of from six months to one year in prison for making raisin whisky. Detroit—Street car motormen and onductors are to be specially deputized by the police department to serve summons on automobile drivers who are drunk or who violate traffic rules.

Grass Lake led at halftime by 11 points but Napoleon came out in the second half and quickly erased that lead. Xavier Bargesser tied the game late in the 4th quarter on a three pointer and then gave the Warriors the lead on another three pointer only to see Napoleon tie the game backup on a three pointer with less than 5 seconds to play in regulation. The Grass Lake Senior Center celebrates 5 Years! Five years ago, the Grass Lake Senior Center opened its doors to provide area members 50 and older a way to socially connect, have access to physical activity, and provide lifelong learning and wellness opportunities.

Boys Varsity Basketball beat Vandercook Lake High School 64-27 Saturday, March 7, 2020 1:00 PM

Under the guidance of Chelsea Senior Center, we opened 2 days a week from 10 – 2. Over the past 5 years, our membership has grown, our days and hours have expanded and we have been able to offer more programming activities to area seniors.

Grass Lake finished the regular season with an impressive thrashing of Vandercook Lake 64-27. The Warriors turned up the pressure early and pulled away easily to leave no doubt of the final outcome

The senior population is the fasting growing segment of the US population. They are also the most susceptible to loneliness and isolation which, research shows, impacts memory, physical well- being, mental health and life expectancy. Having a Senior Center in our rural community helps our seniors have close access to activities that help them stay socially connected and provides them opportunities to engage in wellness activities. We would like to thank Chelsea Senior Center for answering our call to assist us in the startup of the Center. Their knowledge and expertise provided us with a strong foundation to build upon.

FROM FACEBOOK: Jenni Sherwood placed 3rd at the State Meet for Powerlifting. Can you say girl power!!! We got these pictures from her very proud momma. #itsagreatdaytobeawarrior
