FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN: THE TRANSFORMATION OF PETER.. Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com Lightning struck! Thunder clapped! The disciples of Jesus—Peter, James, and John— buried their heads in their arms. What is happening? What is Jesus up to now? Another manifestation of the Spirit. We already know that Jesus is God and on this night another affirmation. How could we forget? Throughout their three-year ministry with Jesus the Lord often reminded the disciples of who he was and of what he was capable. “Without me you can do nothing,” he told them. A bold statement, but not without the truth of the facts to back it up. The proof is on every page of the gospel. Don’t we need to be reminded occasionally? To have our hope strengthened, our qualms calmed, our doubts dispelled. Lent is a long hike through the desert, a riddle to be solved, a puzzle to be completed. The lighter the load the faster we reach our intended destination: Easter and the Resurrection. Keep on truckin' on. As they climbed Mount Tabor the law firm of Peter, James, and John had no idea what awaited them at the summit. Man, would they be surprised. God transformed his son in angelic fashion to help prepare his friends for the remainder of a long journey to Jerusalem where he would fulfill his destiny, the time and place prepared for him by his Father.

Peter, James, and John witnessed many signs and wonders during the three years they trucked with Jesus. He cured the sick. He exorcised devils. He raised the dead. For the lepers he restored their skin white as snow. This guy has star power, friends in high places, the Apostles said. Let’s ride on his coattails to the top floor of the stairway to heaven. Difficulties and doubts are bound to occur in the mind of the sojourner. Two weeks earlier Peter confessed that Jesus was “the Son of the living God.” He spoke this openly. Then Jesus shocked him when he said, “The Son of Man will be handed over to sinners, who will mock him, spit upon him, have him scourged and be crucified and killed and on the third day be raised from the dead.” Peter went completely sideways. “No, Lord. Say it isn’t so.” Jesus stared him down. “Be gone, you son of a devil. You are an obstacle to me.” With the patience of Job he looked upon the crestfallen man with love but also with pity. “I prayed so hard for you, Simon, that your own faith may not fail; you must strengthen the faith of your brothers.” Peter looked away. I never should have sold the boat, he thought. Strange ramblings throughout the desert seemed nebulous, felt like the fool’s progress. But the transformation of Jesus on Tabor Mountain really freaked Peter out. Bright light. The top two distinguished members of the

The new American 1 Credit Union Event Center opened last Friday Jackson, MI – The Jackson community will have the opportunity to view the brand new $6.4 million American 1 Credit Union Event Center at Keeley Park during its debut event, the 44th Annual Home & Garden Show, beginning Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 1. “In the first 50 days the American 1 Credit Union Event Center is open, we already have 30 days booked,” said Kyle Lewis, Deputy Parks Director for the Jackson County Parks. “It’s clear there was a demand for an event center of this size in Jackson, and we’re thankful American 1 stepped up to the plate to provide a space of this magnitude for our community.” The new 30,000 square foot American 1 Credit Union Event Center is a multi-use facility that offers uniquely designed spaces flexible for any occasion such as wedding receptions, banquets, and corporate events for as many as 800 seated guests. It’s also the perfect space for large conventions, consumer or trade shows, business meetings, and banquets. “American 1’s gift of $4 million was the largest single gift in our credit union’s history,” said Martha Fuerstenau, President/CEO of American 1 Credit Union. “Our trust in the County of Jackson to construct a refined, professional space for our community to enjoy for generations to come made the partnership a natural decision for our executive team and Board of Directors.” A letter from David John Wright So a few people have been asking what exactly does the Warrior Club do to support our student athletes? As a club our members work year round to fundraise money that we in return use to help supplement and fund our sports teams at the high school. We run concessions at all home events, host the Cash-0-Rama draw down banquet, help run the chamber of commerce golf outing and find local companies that are willing to make donations. What do we do with all that money ? Between March 2019 and March 2020 we have raised and donated almost $39,000 back

to support our GLHS teams. $9,400- Directly donated to the general athletic budget to help pay for uniforms, game officials, and much needed team supply’s such as new balls, tape, nets and other misc items. $6,500- Deposited directly into our teams accounts after our Athletes and coaches have volunteered to help run the concessions stand during home events. This money can be used by the coach to help pay for special items the team needs and to help with things like tournament entry fees. $17,500 - To purchase equipment that coaches have come to the club and asked for help

college of the prophets, the kingmakers Moses and Elijah, representatives of the Law and the Prophets, respectively, emerged from retirement for a one-night-only appearance to endorse Jesus as Lord and Messiah. The stage was set. The primary roles were cast. Lights, camera, action. Peter sat front row center stage. The mountain was the traditional site for theophany, the manifestation of God in the material world. The ancient Greeks believed that the gods walked the earth and displayed their glory before mortals. They even copulated with them. Men built shrines to house the gods but in Hebrew literature the domicile of the divine was a tent. The Israelites called this the meeting tent and inside Moses met God and chatted the way old friends play checkers in Central Park. Outside the tent flap a column of cloud stood watch. When the sun set the column rang like fire on the summit and the people glimpsed the splendor of God. Moses was God’s own prototype. Jesus chose Peter to be his second in command because Peter was real. Just folks. So when Peter offered to erect three tents, “one for you, one for Moses, and another for Elijah,” he was calling to mind his Exodus and his Numbers that he studied in the synagogue in addition to being catatonic with fear. It was a night that the Rock would never forget.

the Apostle Peter (c. AD 120). We ourselves heard the voice from heaven while we were with him on that holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the dawn when the morning star rises in your heart (2 Pt 1:17-19). Catholic tradition holds that the Transfiguration of Jesus, white-hot lightning, a fragile peal of thunder, occurred forty days prior to Jesus’s resurrection. In the season of Lent this gospel exists to remind the pilgrim why they pray, work hard, fast, and walk step by step through the wilderness to the mountain that is called Easter. This truth was not lost on Paul, whose faith in Christ tended to be heartier than the bull-in-thechina-shop temperament of the man that Jesus ironically named Rock. “Christ Jesus it is who died, or rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.” This is not to say that Peter was on the fence about the Lord’s divinity. How could he be? He worked hard to brand the notion into his mind like a tattoo. The fire on the mountain that he and James and John witnessed empowered him to hang tight with Jesus step for step, more or less in line, as they journeyed toward Jerusalem where the Lord would fulfill his destiny. That was the place in mind.

He detailed his encounter with Christ on Tabor in his posthumous memoir, The Second Letter of

The space features rooms dedicated to long-standing members of the American 1 Board of Directors – past and present. Tremaine Meeting Room is a nod to longstanding American 1 Board Member Jerry Tremaine. Radabaugh Hall, the larger of the two main event spaces is named after Chester “Chet” Radabaugh, while the smaller main event space, Sisk Hall, received its name from Jerry Sisk. Radabaugh and Sisk were still serving actively on the American 1 Board of Directors at the time of their passing, both in 2015. “This partnership between the public and private entities of Jackson County Parks and American 1 Credit Union is unprecedented – not only in Jackson, but in most areas. It’s our unified desire to serve and invest in the Jackson community that makes this partnership work,” said Janelle Merritt, VP of Community Partnerships for American 1. The new American 1 Credit Union Event Center can be booked through the Jackson County Parks Department by calling 517.788.4320 or you can find more information about the facility at American1EventCenter. com.

We could not do any of this without the support and backing we receive from this amazing community we all live in and call home. The support we get from the school staff, administration, parents, students, families and our local business community is amazing. Remember it takes a village to raise strong Warriors, no one can do this alone. The amazing success we are seeing from our Teams and Individual athletes is proof that you get back what you put in.. A great Man once told me to Work Hard, Play Hard. Those are words that we all should live by. Thank you to everyone that has helped make today and every day... A Great Day To Be A Warrior

Life

Hey Grass Lakers! We are already 1 week in to the Lenten season! Can you believe it?! My friends Tracy and Cathy shared this great ‘40 items in 40 days’ challenge that is going around right now on the web and all over Facebook and I thought I’d encourage everyone to participate in it with me! We did something similar to this last year during the Lenten season where I encouraged you all to collect 40 bags of items to donate and I heard great stories of people getting organized at home and donating items to centers, shelters, and organizations in need.

Join us to explore the roles of Priest, Prophet, and Servant King! Over 15 weekend options offered between September 2019 and April 2020

So, 40 days of giving. What do you guys think? We are 1 week in but we all have until Thursday, 4/9 to collect. I figured, if you are anything like me, time goes by fast for you, too, so maybe we can attack this 40 days of giving in a more methodical way to help us stay on track. How about we talk about a few ideas of practical ways that we can give back to others.

St. Francis Retreat Center | 703 E. Main Street | DeWitt, MI 48820

We all have too much clutter in our homes and if you say you don’t, you are lying. We all have that one drawer (or 10 of them) that we just shove stuff into that doesn’t really have a place and we all have that one closet or bedroom in our house where “things without places go to die. If you are like me, you have kitchen appliances stuffed in areas outside of your kitchen because you just can’t pass up that “As seen on tv section at the store. What if we took this idea of “40 days of giving and intertwined it with “40 items in 40 days to get yourself a bit more organized, to get rid of clutter and stuff you haven’t used in over a year, and at the same time, to give back to others. So here’s the challenge. From now until 4/9, go through your crap! Just grab a bag and go to your junk drawer or your closet and sift through the clothes and shoes you’ve been meaning to donate, and fill that bag up. Set it aside, toss it in your trunk or take it right away to your local women’s shelter, local charity or to your neighbor that could use a helping hand. 40 items in 40 days should be a breeze and it is a great way to get organized at home. There are great organizations right here in Jackson County that can benefit from this challenge. Don’t forget, time goes by in the blink of an eye. Together, this week, let’s make some traction and let’s meet right back here next Thursday with some good news about how time slowed down just enough for us to

Give back to others this season.

Connecting animals in need with people who care.

Donna Donna was transferred here with two other cats from another shelter. She’s 10 years old and a sweet, loving girl. Clearly she gets along with other cats. She has been spayed, is now current on her vaccines and has tested negative for both FIV and FeLV. All she’s looking for is a soft landing and a warm bed. This girl still has lots of life left and would make anyone a great companion. If you’re looking for an older, settled cat to snuggle with check out Donna. She might just be a good fit for your family. Her adoption fee is $40.

Dale from Tecumseh Tami from Hillsdale says her Pumpkin & Black Walnut Biscuits are delicious with a dab of apple butter. Sheryl from Caro sent in her recipe for Gruyere-Pecan Biscuits that have a slightly sweet, nutlike flavor. Melinda from Pioneer remembers her grandmother making Whole Wheat Buttermilk Biscuits. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice into a large bowl. Dice the butter into the bowl. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add black walnuts. In a small bowl, mix together pumpkin and buttermilk until smooth and well blended. Add to flour mixture and stir to combine. The dough will be stiff and not all the flour will be incorporated. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently to work in the rest of the flour. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a 2 inch round cutter. Transfer biscuits to a lightly oiled light colored baking sheet (biscuit bottoms tend to brown too much on a dark sheet). Sprinkle tops with sugar. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently and press out until nearly smooth. Pat dough into 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a floured 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Note: 2 ounces of Swiss cheese can be substituted for Gruyere. Boys Varsity Bowling finishes 1st place at Regional

It was a battle right to the end and the team of Jack Schultz, Drew Thompson, Ryan Cicalo, Bradlee Ramsey, Jack Marshall, Jack Stapleton, and Sean Wyers come out on top. After 6 baker(194,218,181,190,198,176) games they were leading by 29 over Manchester. Then they bowled their lowest team game of the year and fell behind Manchester by 115 pins. The Warriors bounced back as they have done all year with 973 game and took the lead going into final individual match by 18 pins. And by luck we would be bowling Manchester head to head in the last game and it was a battle. It was the best back and forth match of the year and the Warriors come out on top 954 to 948 and were crowned REGIONAL CHAMPS. It is the 2nd time ever that GL have been Regional Champs. These boys all made some great shots all day and really pulled through when it was pressure time in the final game. Schultz double in 10th frame, Thompson struck on his 1st ball in the 10th, Marshall had a strike in 9th and also doubled in 10th, Stapleton spared in the 10th, and Wyers had strikes in 7th, 8th, 9th and 1st one in the tenth to seal the game. by Jeffrey Wyers

The Warrior took 6 to the individual Regional bracket this past weekend. It was tough shot and they had used alot on emotion the day before taking home team Regional Championship. Jack Schultz finished 6th with games of 172, 213, 203, 207, 162, and 166. Sean Wyers finished 1st with games of 138, 216, 217, 176, 249, and 204. Congratulation Jack and Sean. These boys have worked their butts off and will be competing for state title next Saturday at Royal Scott Lanes in Lansing. by Shawn Thomas
