The Heart of the Harpster: feast of timeless mystery Local Bluesman to play at TC’s Jams Blue Stage in Napoleon NOTE TO THE READER: Across the Southern Hemisphere: Thunder Down Under is working its way to the Northern Hemisphere with lightening to speed faster than Grass Lake’s Internet woes. The Ausies usher in the new decade blues to give us 2020. OY! Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com

You don’t have to have the blues to like the blues. This weekend Blues virtuous Peter Harper will play at TC’s BlueStage, on Saturday night. BlueStagers will want to fill the seats, to dance, to be entranced by the sonic tones of Harper, who is turn the BlueStage Black and blue, with the subtly of his soulful rendition beneath the high lights hovering the notes fantastic.

John Lappen, does advance tour press for Harper and his band, Midwest Kind. Lappen gave an advance to the Grass Lake Times. Saturday night the blues will get bluer still.

See page 5

Harper has a living legacy as long as the didgeridoo that he touts in his gigs and mysteria with spellbinding personality. Lappen is more than an advance for the musician; Lappen happens to be a fan of Harper and Midwest Kind. "Harper and the band are looking

forward to performing in Napoleon at TC’s BlueStage,” Lappen said. The crowd will enjoy the band’s unique take on the blues as Harper’s songwriting also reflects his interest in American roots music as well as the blues. And, with Harper being a native Australian, he likes to incorporate some of his native Australian musical influences into the mix as well. It’ll be a great night of interesting music for everyone to enjoy….” Raised in Great Britain and Australia, Harper and his wife, and manager Bobbi Llewellyn have chosen to make Grass Lake home. “I looked it up online,” Harper said during an exclusive interview with this writer. Harper creates a heady mix of blues and roots music through his creative use of the harp (The harmonica for those in Grass Lake) and the daunting drone of the didgeridoo, and ancient wind instrument native to Australia. An instrument delivered by Song gods from the great beyond.

The Versatile Harper possesses a powerful, soulful voice and a deep, almost mystical approach to music that some sat he has evolved into his own genre—a rich musical “stew” of 50’s rhythm, a 60s message and of love and unity, and ‘70s funky soul, stirred up with masterful harmonies tones of the didgeridoo. Harper has released 10 acclaimed albums and has supported on tour internationally known artists such as Muddy Waters, Little Feat, Buddy Guy, and Robert Cray. Accolades abound from across the round world. Read— “Harper is an original, playing the harmonica like and authentic Chicago bluesman ... singing about unity and love like a member of a peacenik. Truly a rare treat.” —Modern Rock Review. The BlueStage is located at 398 Brooklyn Road in Napoleon. The show is scheduled for 7:00 pm. For more details contact the management at 517-356-8635.

Supporters of the Grass Lake Area Historical Society bade their well with its winter auction at the Coe House in mid-December. We all hunkered down from the cold. This was the 37th annual Auction. 150 maybe more, backed in the seething swelling heat and all the oxygen .We were lovin’ it. The event was sweet but not bitter, historical but not old and in the way, and plenty of novelties that were worth shouting about. About 30 treasure seekers waiting reasonably for their time to bid in the cloying atmosphere. It was a clean, bright stuffy ambiance. Bidding began—lock a rocket— hot lights. In our country we have the greatest of all giants. For centuries he has been peacefully sleeping, but today he is beginning to stir. This giant is the American farmer, the one man of earth upon whom all the world depends for its existence.

The new federation will not use bombs or other like means of destruction. It will not use physical force or intimidaation of any nature. It will use horse sense and persuasion and will accomplish the desired results. It may resort to the ballot where other means fail.

Capitalistic profiteers have gouged him until his hide resembles a sieve. Dairy Labor agitation and strikes have curtailed his legitimate activities until his exasperation has reached the point of explosion. But the giant is calling a halt. He has grasped the club of war and is going into action.

A new organization for farmers has been created. It is the American Federation of Farm Bureaus. It proposes to be to the farmer what the American Federation of Labor has been to the cause of union labor. Its object is to protect the farmer and the average American citizen from the injustices of capital and

The farmer wants a fair price for the products of his soil. He wants the ultimate consumer to receive these products at an equally fair price, without enriching a horde of useless and unscrupulous, middlemen, speculators and profiteers. If this new organization follows out its announced plan of looking after the interests of those of the people who are now between the corporation and the labor unions, the profiteers and the agitators may well take to cover. A nemesis will soon be on their trail, and its mercy is as yet an unknown quantity.

Flint—With City Assessor Summer G. Kiki

Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding? Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me!! Whatsup everyone? My name is Kiki! I’m here waiting at CHS to find my person to never ever leave from beside me ;). I am a 3-year-old girl, and full of so much life and love. I’m just looking for someone to choose me as their forever love and companion. I am a beautiful, black/rustcolored short-haired Tortoise shell cat. My human couldn’t care for me any longer due to health issues. I am spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccines, tested negative for FIV/FeLV, and given flea/Heartworm prevention. Come meet me, y’all! My adoption fee is $60.

Missy

Missy is a very energetic, 5-year-old, tricolor Coonhound/Foxhound mix. She doesn’t care for toys, but she loves walks and just being outside. Barking is one of her favorite things to do as well. Can’t help it! Hey, Missy is a hound; it’s in her blood. This girl has some separation anxiety, so she would do best in a home where someone was with her a good deal of the time. Missy has been spayed, microchipped, brought up-to-date on vaccines and tested negative for Heartworm. Her adoption fee is $150.

Please note: sometimes animals featured in the newspaper may have been adopted by the time the newspaper reaches the stand, but, at CHS, we always have more! You can check our website for up-todate available pets:www.chspets.org. We’re open 12-6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Pay It Forward project

New Year means New Year’s Resolutions! Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

Happy New Year Grass Lake! I am excited to ring in another birthday with you all as we start another year together and welcome the year 2020! Can you believe I just said 2020? Who remembers 12/31/1999 when we were all holding our breath and freaking out, wondering what would happen to the banks and computers and worried the world would implode at the stroke of midnight. But alas! Everything was just fine and we are now 20 years older and holding it all together. Sort of.

It’s a new year which, for some, means New Year’s Resolutions. Do you have a New Year’s Resolution this year? For anyone wondering…. I do! I have a few actually. This is the year I get rid of those few (many) extra pounds that have been clinging to every bite of pizza I eat (LOL). This year my husband and I are committed to doing more with what God has entrusted us with. It’s more than giving a tithe to our local church community and more than sending a check or donating financially. In 2019, Colin and I committed that we would give more to those hurting around us; those that were in need both financially, emotionally, and physically. We are going to continue this through 2020 and give back to others through our time, treasure, and talents.

The 7th grade boys finished the season undefeated with a win at home against Vandercook. It was a highly contested game but the Warriors hung in to finish off an undefeated season. Brayden Lape led all scorers with 16 points while Zander Stormont add 8 points.Other scorers included Bryant Cook and Sal Vitale with 4 each, and Nate Pettit, Jordan Jarrell, and Carmyne Beltran with 2 points each. Again, it was a great team effort from everyone who filled in to secure the lead throughout the game. By John Blackburn

Grass Lake Weekend Basketball Saturday 1/4

There seems to be a little confusion over our game this Saturday (1/4).... Yes, it is a real game against Pewamo Westphalia the reining division 3 state champions. Yes, it is being played at GVSU on their main court. It is a day filled with basketball. The GVSU girls play at 1pm, the GVSU boys play at 3pm and we are scheduled at 5pm. No, the JV girls are not playing. This was not an option. We know it's a road trip, but the girls would love to see their hometown fans in the stand showing their support as we see right where we stand in the state Harvey Sparr Bowling Tournament Grass Lake had 13 bowling this past weekend in the Harvey Sparr tournament at Jax 60. Jack Marshall was the high for tournament posting games of 205, 190 and 277, he took 1st in his division. Clayton Weir took 1st in his division, Brenton Cochran took 2nd in open division and Drew Thompson took 3rd in open division. Sean Wyers took 4th in 191 and up division. Great bowling Warriors!

... continued from page 1 My clumsy fingers—usually quite capable, failed to preserve two figurines, two out of three of the Magi. Whoever reads this article and names the Wise Men will receive a two year subscription of the Grass Lake Times.

So, this brings me back to you. What are your resolutions this year? Do you have any extra pizza pounds you want to shed or do you have healing you need to do? Do you want to give back more this year or are you making a resolution to invest in your education or to grow spiritually? We all have different goals and resolutions that we make but there is one that we can make together.

Theis announces fall photo contest winners Congratulations! December 31, 2019

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Lana Theis announced on Tuesday the winners of her fall photo contest. “I appreciate all who took the time to get out and photograph our beautiful part of Michigan,” said Theis, R-Brighton. “While there were numerous entries that captured many beautiful places and scenes located throughout the 22nd Senate District, our three winners stood above all. Congratulations to Terri Moore and Pam Ries for being selected as this year’s fall photo contest winners.” Among the three winning photos is a still life of an apple, taken by Ries, of Howell, at the Markville Orchard.

Another winner included a photo of an ivy-covered door that was submitted by Moore, also of Howell.

Let’s all commit to paying it forward in some way in 2020 so we can be a part of the change our world and community needs and wants. I am in! I hope you join me! Let’s make this our best year yet!

scene? When to break it down? I suspect that I’ll keep the manger up until next year, just to admire it, for it did cost $12, which is all this penniless writer can contemplate. Once the auction closed it came time to take collation, that is, goodies served before dinner, accompanied by cocktails. As well, hors d'oeuvres were served at a cocktail party where a full dinner is not being served. The first day of the rest of the year— tomorrow— delivers the choice between the blessing or the curse - your choice. I say, soar like an eagle -- take wings and fly! Happy New Year!
