THE CHRISTMAS CAR

God loves cheerful givers ... Christmas on four wheels ... need is a way ...

Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com

Christmas came early for Arlene Nickless, who received a great Christmas present—a fully refurbished 2008 Taurus station wagon, paid for through the generous donations of fellow employees. This is the giving season, but when Nickless saw the Taurus, she smiled and cried, overwhelmed by the surprise gift. “It’s huge!” Nickless said.

into the evening. But she knew in her heart that prayers from her church community and friends would be answered. And they have. “It’s so pretty,” said Lisa Blaski, who works with Nickless. The Christmas gift was the behind the scenes super surprise, the work resulting from the generosity of the Grass Lake Chevrolet Sales Team, and the coordinated efforts of Father David Rosenberg and the employees at the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt. John Lesinski, assistant Sales Manager was nearly as giddy as were Nickless and her manager and friend Lisa Blaski.

The occasion was bittersweet. Her husband died last year following a five year battle with cancer, leaving her and the two of her five children still living at home penniless and nearly homeless. To add to the family woes, her 19 year-old son was recently diagnosed with cancer. Nickless struggles with finances because of medical bills and the lack of an automobile. She had gotten use to public transportation for work even though she works very late

“It’s your car! Bought and paid for,” Lesinski said. Lesinski makes a good Santa Klaus. Jolly and generous, and has the white whiskers to prove it. All present

agreed, “God’s got a plan!” The steel gray sky hemmed in the region, but few at the “Christmas Party” noticed. Their focus was on the ‘reason for the season.’ The car that Nickless received wasn’t a loaner. Neither did it come wrapped in a bow, like "The Price is Right." “I knew that my prayers were answered,” Nickless said. In a booming "Santa" voice, Lesinski exclaimed, “Sign right here on the dotted line. It's all yours!” Then he handed Nickless the keys. Automobile title, plate fees and insurance were included. When every one concluded with prayers, Nickless started up the ignition, and she and Blaski drove off, stunned by the turn of events on this life-changing day!

Peter D. Harper and his band “Harper and Midwest Kind” are to play at TC’s Jams at The BlueStage, Napoleon - Saturday January 11th Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com

Award-winning Australian singer/ songwriter Peter D. Harper -- known in the music world, as "Harper" brings forth his latest release “RISE UP’ featuring 10 original tunes due to be released on February 11th 2020 world wide . “RISE UP” profoundly expresses Harper’s creative use meaningful lyrics, which reflect the divisive times, we currently live in , a harmonica and the haunting drone of the didgeridoo, a wind instrument developed by indigenous peoples of northern Australia nearly 1500 years ago. GLT: What do like about music? Tell the Grass Lake Times about how you started and how long have you been a working musician. HARPER: Music has always been a huge part of my life. I started playing the euphonium in brass bands at school and in the Salvation Army Band . Later I picked up the harmonica, piano, then didgeridoo. I began performing in bands in Perth, Western Australia in my late teens. I find that music can truly uplift and transform you for the better. I enjoy the

live performance side of music either being on stage or being in the audience. Over the years so many people have come up to me and thanked me for a particular song which helped them through a tough time in their life. I enjoy writing songs and telling stories. Ive been a professional musician since my late teens, my music has taken me to twenty different countries. GLT: It appears that you’ve played all over the world. Name some of the venues where you’ve played, specifically those performances that are so special and remarkable.

HARPER: I think performing at The Pearl in Shanghai, China was very special. We did a two week China tour in 2017. It was a very unique experience to visit this interesting country with such an ancient culture. I was surprised to see such large crowds for my first tour. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. My favorite shows are for most part large festivals, I really dig the large stages, production and audience. I have performed at the Byron Bay Blues festival in Byron Bay, New South Wales,

Village of Grass Lake 119 North Lake Street, P.O. Box 737 Grass Lake, Michigan 49240 (517) 522-4550

Australia several times over the years. An absolutely stunning beach location and one of the biggest festivals of its kind in Australia (attracting 50 000 music fans ) with major artists from all over the world in attendance. Blissfest in Harbor Springs in Michigan is very special to me. It has a cool hippy vibe. Blissfest has always been a great supporter of my music. Ive been very fortunate to have performed there several times. The festival has an eclectic mix of artists of all genres, with music workshops and arts, crafts, drum circles and so much more. Apart from band performances, I have presented didgeridoo workshops in the woods.Blissfest is a fun place to be and I am glad I have seen it grow and prosper over the years. A recent performance at The Grolsch Blues Festival in Shoppingen, Germany, was just incredible. We literally flew to Germany for one show. My band and I stayed for the weekend and we got to enjoy the little town of Shoppingen. The German people couldn’t do enough for us, they were so welcoming and kind. The reaction to our festival set was fantastic. Finally I would like to mention a very cool juke joint, just off a dirt track, hidden in the backwoodsof Tallahassee, Florida – the Bradfordville Blues Club. Gigantic Oak Trees with Spanish moss hanging down, surround the club. A huge bonfire is always raging and a fish fry is always a part of the

Bradforville experience. A truly unique experience! GLT: Music certainly influences regardless the genre. Tell us about your fans. Have you been able to get to know members of your fan base, in what way and how does that inform your recent compositions. HARPER: With social media, its very easy to have a much more hands on connection with fans. My band has fans from all around the world. They post videos, pictures, suggest venues to play and they tell us about their lives. Its great to have this type of interaction!. I get my stories for my songs through my musical journey and life experience. I try to promote positivity through my music. I use music as a vehicle to uplift. GLT: Myself a layman, it would seem that that many recording artists, such as yourself, started in blues bands—the Stones, Clapton, Cream, Marshall Tucker . Allman Brothers. Sir John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins et al. [feel free to tell us your thoughts on them.] HARPER: I certainly draw influence from many great artists both past and present. That is the only way to learn and evolve. I have tried to create my own sound and my own story. I listen to many different musical genres for inspiration. Writing original music has always been my goal. Continued on pg 5...

100 Years Ago From the Archives My Christmas Tree

In Austria the candles are set in the window that the Christ Child may not stumble when he comes to bless the home.

Oh looket here? My, wasn’t Santa good! He gave me all the presents that he could. That’s ’cause I always kept so neat and clean— On Sundays dresst just like a fairy Queen.

In north Germany the tables are spread and the lights left burning for the incoming of the Virgin Mary and her attending angel.

I minded darling Mother ev’ry day; Was careful of my dresses when at play, And held my Gran’ma’s yam when she did knit, For that’s the way I did my little bit.

The English superstition is admirably voiced by the myriad-minded Shakespeare in "Hamlet":

And when my Dad came home from work each night I tried to please him with my tiny might; Always brought his pipe and paper, too. So he could smoke and read it thru and thru. Dear Santa Claus, in Toyland, heard ’bout me, ’Cause my Mother said he said, said he, “I’ll just give that sweet and ’bedient chile The-very, things she’s wanted all the while.” So see this pretty, sparkling Christmas Tree And the toys and things he gave to me; When you’re good like me and try to please Santa Claus will give you toys like these.

A Common Human Failing

It is undoubtedly more blessed to give than to receive; but it is a human failing to compare the value of Christmas gifts. Page 3

Some say that ever ’gainst that season comes Wherein our Lord's birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long, And then they say no spirit can walk abroad. The nights are wholesome, Then no planets strike, No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm. So hallowed and so gracious is the time.

Some Christmas Legends There is a Bosnian legend that the sun leaps in the heavens and the stars dance around it. A great peace comes stealing down over mountain and forest. The rotten stumps stand straight and green on the hillide. The grass is deflowered with blossoms, and the birds sing on the mountain tops in thanks to God. In Poland the heavens open and Jacob’s ladder is set up between earth and sky.

O month far famed! For festive days and nights renowned, Toy fraught, with hallowed benedictions crowned; Life’s annual clearing house for retrospective thought, Where pensive memory recalls the smiles, the tears.

toll-free 844.458.4637

The hopes ana joys of youth, the loves of vanished years, And sighs to see the havoc, sad, that Time has wrought. O hoary month! In regions of the north and east the song of bird and rippling of the brook have ceased And Nature’s thousand charms of summer days have fled, there Boreas reigns, fierce god of wind and storms; And winter all of verdure into brown and white transforms And leaves no trace of life and beauty sped. 0 happy month! When keen anticipation, sweet. Flies swift on wings of ardent love to greet With gifts the friend, the lover or the kindred near. As Winter closer draws his icy fettered chains The heart expands and love unselfish reigns And speeds its largess to the ones most dear. Illustrious months of most illustrious birth! Good tidings, peace and joy to all the earth A heavenly choir announced when Christ was born. No other birth such mighty portent bore. This Prince of Peace whom heaven and earth adore. How thrills the heart at thought of Christmas morn! —J. C. Oliver

Princess Zelda

Princess Zelda is the very epitome of her name... just look at this phots! This beautiful girl is between 10 and 11 years old. She is front-declawed and would do best in a home without other pets. Princess has been spayed, given parasite preventive, vaccines, and tested negative for FeLV/ FIV. Princess is quite the little lady in that she has superior litter manners as well. Wouldn’t you love to stop in and visit with this sweet girl? Please do. Princess Zelda would just love the attention. We’re open Tuesday through Saturday noon to six. Her adoption fee is $40.

Sadie

Sadie is a very pretty, shy, 6 1/2-year-old German Shepherd. This pretty girl needs to be the only pet in the home. She is very shy when first meeting strangers, and it takes her a bit to warm up, but this is a lovely dog. If there are children in the home they need to be older, ages 10 and up. Sadie is not too thrilled with loud noises, like fireworks and thunderstorms. She also can get jumpy around fast movements. She is housebroken and crate-trained. Sadie has been spayed, brought current on her vaccines and is microchipped. Stop by anytime Tuesday through Saturday, noon-to-6pm to visit with Sadie. Her adoption fee is $150. Please note: sometimes animals featured in the newspaper may have been adopted by the time the newspaper reaches the stand, but, at CHS, we always have more! You can check our website for up-todate available pets:www.chspets.org. We’re open 12-6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Pay It Forward project New Year… New Year’s Resolutions! Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

It’s the day after Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even me because I am sleeping in today! Christmas is over and the new year is only days away! How did that happen so fast!? Weren’t we just talking about eating Thanksgiving Dinner and ordering gifts on Amazon? It’s almost a new year which, for some, means New Year’s Resolutions. New Year’s Resolutions are sometimes hard to stick with. For a lot of us (yes, me included), New Year’s Resolutions

start out strong January 1st and then by January 17th, everything goes to pot and we end up either forgetting them or wondering why we chose that specific resolution to begin with. I didn’t want that to happen to you, or me, so I thought of a pay it forward idea that is easy and practical and will keep us going strong all year long. Are you ready to go with me on this journey? Let’s do it. This New Year’s Resolution will be an easy one for you to stick with this year. Each month, donate one item (or one bag of items) to charity. Now, if a light bulb just went off in your head, you are a winner! This pay it forward idea doesn’t just help others, but it helps you, too! We all love the feeling of getting rid of clutter and organizing ourselves, our lives and our closets, and this pay it forward project will help others throughout the year and it will help get you organized, too!

Now, here’s a little tip to help you keep this resolution on track. Don’t start with a big project! Don’t start by clearing out your basement that is fuller than your stomach after Thanksgiving dinner. Do not start out in your garage because the sight of mouse poop will make you quit right away. And whatever you do, don’t start in your linen closet. There are expired medicines and stuff hiding in there that will stop you dead in your tracks. Start

easy. Something like your coat closet or dresser will be a good start. Tackle those small jobs first, fill up a bag, and donate it to charity this month and you will be well on your way to paying it forward and keeping your resolution. I am so glad you are joining me this year! I have some closets to organize and some items to donate to let’s stay strong and stay on track together!

Happy paying it forward Grass Lake and Happy New Year!

Over all good tesm performance by all. Eleanor Durkee 162 By Shawn Thomas

Contined from pg 2... GLT: On a personal note, what led you and Bobbi to Grass Lake? HARPER: Funnily enough, I found Grass Lake on the Internet. We wanted to have a complete change from our previous life in Melbourne, Australia. We wanted space, a good piece of land that was not too close to a big city but close enough to be able to get to an airport for our international tours. I did a lot of research on the town and we looked at several properties over a period of two years and found the perfect spot. We love Grass Lake, it was a good choice to move here. We’ve made many friends and it really feels like home! GLT: Based on our infrequent conversations, you’re an international musician. How are you able to gain interest from fans from across the globe, and how do you and Bobbi attract new listeners? HARPER: I was fortunate to have signed with a big record company “Blind Pig Records” in 2005. This company actually had their early beginnings in Ann Arbor at the venue – The Blind Pig before becoming established in Chicago and San Francisco. Blind Pig Records was instrumental in exposing my music worldwide via their distribution and

Jack "Bones" Stapleton led the Warriors with a season high 280 game(spare in the 2nd frame, all rest strikes), with lots of help from team shooting 1013 and 1020 in the placing my music on television, films, radio and live streaming sites. GLT: How much time do you spend in the studio versus on stage? Is it a both and or an either or? HARPER: I spend more time performing live but I try to write new music at every opportunity in my own studio. Once I’m ready to record an album, I take it to my good friend Geoff Micheal at Big Sky Recording in Ann Arbor to do the final recording and mix. GLT: Lastly, what’s next? HARPER: In January, 2020, I am doing some early CD release parties in Michigan for “RISE UP” prior to the worldwide release on February 11th. I hope all Grass Lakers can make it to TCs Jams at the BlueStage in Napoleon on Saturday January 11th. There are several more Michigan shows through out the state also in January. Did you know that over 1,400 pets come to CHS each year because they have nowhere else to go? There are even more out there in need, waiting to come to CHS for their second chance. As you enjoy your holidays, please don't forget about the homeless pets of Jackson, still waiting for their forever home.

DIRECTIONS: Measure all ingredients into a large bowl. With mixer at medium speed, beat until well mixed. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out cookies and place 1/2 inch apart on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes until browned. Cool and frost as desired.

We want all our pets to have a home for the holidays and if not, all the care necessary while here at CHS. Each pet is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, given supplements and parasite prevention, microchipped and given whatever else they need -- whether that is time, extra love and attention, special medication, or even surgery. This adds up to much more than what we charge in adoption prices.
