Cascade Humane Society Presents “Santa Paws” Santa Paws is coming to Town Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com

A dreary Sunday afternoon brightened up quickly when we met Jack, a one year old German shepherd in need of a good home. Jack is not alone.

This month, members of Cascade Humane Society will present the public with “Santa Paws is coming to town.” Smell the fresh kibble at Pet Supplies Plus at N. Wisner St in Jackson. Consider adopting a new pet. Several shoppers stopped to behold the wiry German Shepard, but he was shy and uncertain of all the attention, even as admirers fawned over him, stroking his black and tan coat. Cascade trustee Kathy Ramsey, sat speaking with potential visitors, to see if anyone would like to adopt Jack. Ramsey snapped her fingers to help coax him to ‘perform’, but he rolled over and fell asleep.“It can be exciting,” Ramsey said. Shoppers snapped “selfies” but went no further. Jack was Santa Claus’s assistance. Like any good dog, Jack sat at Santa’s black-booted feet, curled up by the man in red and white, who also seemed to need a nap. The adoption drive is going on for the entire month at the pet supply store. It was difficult situation— costumers strolled through the

aisles, picking up supplies for their pets, including pillows, dog toys, as well as catnip. The felines poked their paws through the bars on the crates. Luna Garcia, came into the store to get solutions for her dogs, both blind, and their coatswere

mottled and dry, which emitted a rancid odor, she said.

75¢

“They’re pretty old,” Garcia said. “They’re nearly toothless, both deaf and half blind.” She asked an employee to help her find medicine for ear infections. Compared to the rawboned Jack with his wiry coat, both of Garcia’s dogs arechihuahuas;their eyes are like doll’s eyes, “lifeless eyes.” Garcia said. Santa Paws isn’t a gala or a fundraiser. Rather, the volunteers keep the atmosphere down to earth and hope to find the animals loving homes. Santa Paws is a way for families to meet animals that are looking to be adopted. Victorious servants take on more than one animal, as needed.

reduced. “Last year 150,000 people fell victim of the disease. Twelve thousand of these were little children. Think of it! This death toll is needless. If we all do our part in the sale this year, next year’s death rate will be smaller. It will be reduced year by year until eventually tuberculosis has passed into the oblivion which has already engulfed smallpox, leprosy and typhoid fever.”

Beverly Hayes says: “Buy Red Gross Christmas Seals. They protect little children from the ravages of tuberculosis. They build a barrier of health about the workers of the nation. They protect homes—your home. "They spell hope, assurance and economic rehabilitation to more than one million people in the United Slates who have tuberculosis. If you purchase enough Red Cross Christmas Seals, the death rate of this dread plague will be materially

If you’re particularly partial to calico cats, you have to see 1 ½-year-old Cali. Bright, wonderful colors decorate this adorable female. She has a sunny, wonderful personality to match those vibrant colors. She has been spayed, microchipped, brought current on her vaccinations, tested negative for FiV/FeLV and has been given a parasite preventive. Cali is every bit a proper lady and knows to use her cat litter. She’s looking for just the right lap to snuggle into…soon, please.

Dozer Say hello to Dozer! He is a handsome 2-year-old Pit Bull mix. He has been neutered, microchipped, and brought up-to-date on shots. He is negative for heartworm. Dozer is housetrained and lets you know when he has to go outside. Dozer is also crate-trained. He gets along with some dogs but he can be very choosy. Cats—not so much. This guy is a very energetic dog and likes to play outside. If you think you have enough spunk for this pup, stop by Tuesday-Saturday from noon-to-6pm and visit with him!She really is a love. Please note: sometimes animals featured in the newspaper may have been adopted by the time the newspaper reaches the stand, but, at CHS, we always have more! You can check our website for up-todate available pets:www.chspets.org. We’re open 12-6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Pay It Forward project Don’t Be a Turkey! Gobble it forward! Brenda Cooper Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com

Gobble! Gobble! Gobble! It’s November Grass Lake! The month of thanksgiving and all things turkey and pumpkin pie! Last week’s pay it forward project was to get those coat closets cleaned out so you could join me in this year’s “Share the Warmth Drive” where we pay it forward by donating winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves to those in need. You still have another week to collect winter gear for this project! The collection date is 11/16 from 12-1pm at Frank’s Grocery store! Stop by and drop off your coat donation in the back of the parking lot

any time from 12-1pm and I will deliver it personally to kids, adults or a family in need right here in Jackson County! For this week’s pay it forward project, I thought we would get our craft on by making paper turkeys! This project is perfect to involve your kids at home, the kids in your classroom, your Girl Scout or Boy Scout troop, the kids in daycare, or for those November birthday party crafts! It’s perfect to surprise someone with a cute craft that is tail feathers above the rest! This is what you’ll need for this pay it forward project: -Toilet paper roll -2 googly eyes -Red, orange, yellow craft paper -Glue -Scissors What you’ll do: Cut feather shapes out of your colored craft paper (you’ll want around 2 feathers of each color). Next, cut a small triangle

out of the orange colored paper for the beak. Cut a small peanut shape out of red craft paper for a waddle. Cut 2 feet out of the orange craft paper. Once you are done cutting, the next thing you’ll do is write kind words for the recipient of your turkey onto the colored tail feathers (i.e. if you are giving this turkey to your teacher, write out positive words that describe your teacher or if you are giving this craft to your best friend, write out

encouraging words or phrases on the colored tail feathers). Next, glue the eyes, beak, waddle, and feet to the front side of the toilet paper roll. Lastly, glue the feathers on to the backside of the roll to complete your project. Once you are finished, take your turkey and pay it forward to someone special to show them how much you care about them. This is such a fun and interactive project to keep those kids busy and to show them what it means to pay it forward to others through fun craft projects. I would love to see pictures of your colorful turkeys once you are finished! Please email them to me at Brenda@thegrasslaketimes.com.

Happy gob-gob-gobbling this week everyone and happy paying it forward, one tail feather at a time!

Grass lake Warriors Sports update Varsity Volleyball Takes Game One of Districts over Napoleon Monday, November 4, 2019

The Lady Warriors traveled to Vandercook Lake for their first District game against The Napoleon Pirates. Before tonight the warriors have seen the Pirates three times this season and have been able to take the W on all three occasions. Grass Lake was able to seal the deal tonight with a fourth win. Napoleon put up a good hard fight but the team was able to push back and play aggressive till

the very last point. Grass Lake took set one (25-20) and struggled to take set two losing in a close (23-25) set. Set three was another nailbiter with Grass Lake winning (26-24). Grass Lake started off behind in the fourth set until Junior Kendall Shankland stepped up to serve and got them back in the game with a 9 point service run. Senior, Anna Lockridge and Junior, Ruby Johnson had a few huge kills from senior setter Andrea Kleine to get the team fired up and finished the game (25-20). Anna Lockridge had a game high of 21 kills and 22 digs. Kendall Shankland, was a key server for the night going 21-for-21 with 14 service points and had 26 digs. Anna Konopka and Abby Buttigieg were also big in the back row with Konopka digging up 20 balls and Buttigieg getting 18. Ruby Johnson had 9 aggressive kills at the net. Emily Taylor contributed with 4 blocks for the night and multiple

hard kills. Our front row couldn’t have done it without Andrea Kleine who had a game high of 43 assists. The Warriors move on to the semi-finals Wednesday against Jackson Prep at Vandercook Lake again at 5:30. By Cassie Andonian

The Recipe Exchange Dear Lynn, I’m looking for some holiday cookie recipes that freeze well, so I can have them on hand in a jiffy over the holidays. Paul from Battle Creek Terry from Quincy likes to surprise her family with something fun for supper. Her favorite fun recipe is for Spicy Cheddar Fondue. The Miracle Worker

Set in the mid-1880s, The Miracle Worker recounts the story of Helen Keller's discovery of language through the teachings of Annie Sullivan. The play portrays the Keller family's struggle to forge roads of communication not only with their daughter but with each other as well. Director Amy Janz says that the play is “so much more than a play about Hellen Keller but at its heart is a story of a blended family simply trying to figure out how to understand each other.”

Cancer and PTSD - It doesn't stop with the last treatment...

The cast stars high school senior, Rebecca Rigg, as Annie Sullivan, the young teacher who for personal reasons cannot accept anything short of a miracle to reach the blind and deaf Helen Keller, played by high school sophomore, Ruby Bernhard. “This show truly has a universal message. Life is full of different kinds of blindness, so everyone can find something to relate to within this play” says Rigg. Bernhard adds “in a situation where someone is deemed to be hopeless, The Miracle Worker shows that hope still exists and that no one is truly helpless.”

The production will run Friday, November 8th, and Saturday, November 9th at 7pm and Sunday, November 10th at 3 pm at the Grass Lake High School auditorium.
