‘Out of the Blue’ Grass Lake Football Coach Named Coach of the week Winning Spirit ... Lessons are discipline... Raymond Tucker Cordani rtc@thegrasslaketimes.com Last week’s edition featured a short blurb on page four. The brief announced that Randy Cole, the Grass Lake High School coach, had been named High School Football Coach of the Week—by the Detroit Lions. It must have had something to do with the Warriors mowing down HanoverHorton challenge, a rout that saw Grass Lake defeat the opposition 52-13. What a long bus ride back to Hanover-Horton that must have been. I’ve been on that bus before. Opportunity means more than lucky stars and a starting position in the big game. Time to rethink things. Since the Grass Lake Times wasn’t asked to join the committee of king makers, this newspaper of record chose to expand on what it means to be a “coach of the week,” and augmented the article into a full-blown feature. Read on.

Cole has led the Warriors to the playoffs more than a dozen times in the past 14 years and appears ready to do it again this season. When asked about the recognition, Cole expressed surprise about how it came about.

“A committee of sportswriters selected me,” Cole says. “The winner is selected by a panel of sportswriters.” Like the journey of the Magi, the sportswriters divined that greater feats were sure to come as the season processes at Betchel Athletic complex at Grass Lake High School, home of the Warriors. But the Warriors also look for a greater patch of turf. The panel of the bards of mud and blood and sis-boom-bah consists of sportswriters across the Mitten: Mick McCabe of the Detroit Free Press. Hugh Bernreuter of the Saginaw News. Bret Bakita at Radio 106 FM in Grand Rapids, et. al. All the sporting press wizards cast their votes and the award went to Randy Cole. The win and a 4-0 start netted Cole the Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week honor for Week 4 of the season. The Warriors are ranked fourth in the state in Division sixth in the Cascades Conference. Cole, a counselor, and in his 37th season at Grass Lake and 20th as head coach, owns a 147-60 record with 15 state playoff appearances, reaching the state final in 2006. Cole has won seven Cascades Conference titles heading into a league showdown against Michigan Center, which beat Grass Lake in the 2018 playoff opener. This weekend Grass Lake will play against the Napoleon High School Pirates Cole says that their record is “a bit down, but good.” Preparation for each games consists of studying the films. “The kids did great in the summer training,” Cole says. “Now they’re gearing up.”

Derek Shell, lead coach at Napoleon High School discussed the Pirate’s strategy prior to Weekend Lights bright. A math teacher, Shell says he’s looking forward to playing against Grass Lake this Saturday. Homecoming weekend saw the Warriors brutalize the Comets on the 20th of September. Grass Lake offence racked up nearly 500 yards and Quarterback Carson Farley passed 276 yards. Numbers don’t lie. Each Lions Coach of the Week receives a $2,000 honorarium to the school’s football program, including a Gatorade performance package. At the end of the season, the Lions will choose a high school Coach of the Year, who will receive a $4,000 donation to the school’s football program. Winners receive a certificate signed by Matt Patricia and Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner, a personalized game ball and recognition at the Detroit Lions Dec. 15 game against Tampa Bay. The program, in its 23rd season, has awarded $433,000 to high school football programs. An online reader voiced an opinion, a commendation actually, over Cole’s success for turning young athletes to reach their full potential. “Very deserving. I played for this man several years ago and I can attest that not only is he a great coach, but he is an even better man. We need more people like this around our children and the Grass Lake community should feel very blessed to have him. Best of luck coach! Go win another one!”

100 Years Ago From the Archives Brilliant Array of Talent Farrar and Other Brilliant Stars for Ann Arbor Concerts The Autumn Ann Arbor concert series is attracting a great deal of attention throughout the state on account of the exceptionally brilliant array of musicial talent which is to participate.

Geraldine Farrar, the wonderful star of the Metropolitan Opera company, who has become famous as a film artist, will open the series on Saturday evening, October 18, 1919 (the evening of the day of the Michigan-MAC football contest). Famed singer and author Geraldine Farrar was educated in public schools and then became a music student of Mrs. J.H. Long, Trabadello, Emma Thursby, Lilli Lehman and Graziani. Her 1901 debut was at the Royal Opera House in Berlin, in the role of Marguerite in "Faust". She is a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. At her Ann Arbor debut she will be assisted by Arthur Hackett, the young american tenor who has attracted so much attention and Rosita Renard, the Chilean pianist whose concerts in the United States ast year were loudly acclaimed. This combination of musicians have prepared a program of song which will please the average layman as well as the skilled musician.

We love fall around the Coopers! There are some great seasonal pay it forward projects that I have for you guys this month and I can’t wait to share them! Remember, this entire month is Pastor

Appreciation month so don’t forget about doing something kind for your pastor(s), too. For this week’s project, we are going to get our scents on! There are certain scents that remind me of fall. Scents like apples, cinnamon, bonfires, pumpkin and caramel. I can smell it all now! Oh wait. That is because I have a fall candle lit. This next pay it forward project is scent-o-rific! That’s right. It’s a word. Head to your local grocery store, dollar

There are some great scents out there like Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte, Crisp Morning Air, Pumpkin Cupcake, Maple Leaves, Apple Pie, Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin, Warm Autumn Glow, or Salted Caramel. Wrap up one of these great scents and “fall it forward” to someone special this week. You can drop one off with

It’s time to embrace all that this fall season has to offer so let’s get our scents on this week Grass Lake and fall it forward!

Grass lake Warriors Sports update Warrior Defense and Special Teams Shine in Win Over Michigan Center Played on 9/27/2019 7:00 PM

It was a rainy night for the annual Relay for Life game Friday at the Joe Bechtel Athletic Complex but the rain did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance as the Warriors came from behind to beat the visiting Michigan Center Cardinals 21-14.

The Warrior offense was very much held in check by a stingy Cardinal defense for much of the night. In the third quarter, Weston Kwiatek entered the game and scored on his first carry of the game, scampering 56 yards to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead. Defensively the Warriors the Warriors were led by Gage Lee and Nick Woolery who each finished the game with an astounding 15 tackles. Lee also sacked the MC quarterback on a big 4th down

Page 5

in the third quarter and knocked down 3 passes. Knocking down passes was a common theme for the Warrior defensive backfield. Josh Sherwood had a great night, breaking up 5 passes and intercepting 1 while Carson Canning also broke up 4 passes on the night. The biggest story line of the night was on special teams. Brett Sherwood punted 3 times, pinning the Cardinals inside the 20 twice and converted all three of his extra point attempts (running his point after conversion streak to 31). The punt and kick return units ended up being the heroes of the night. Winston Higgins took a 3rd quarter punt return 83 yards to give the Warriors a 14-6 lead. After a Cardinal score in the fourth quarter tied the game, it was Higgins again. This time a weaving, 90 yard kickoff return for what would end up being the game winning score. The win moves the Grass Lake to 5-0 on the season. The Warriors travel down Wolf Lake Road to Napoleon this Friday for a 7:00 kickoff against the Pirates. See you at the game! By Anthony Cole

Boys Varsity Soccer beat Columbia Central High School 2-1 Saturday, September 28, 2019 10:00 AM

The Warriors got on the board first with Senior Louis Good putting away a slow roller across the Eagles goal. The Warriors defense and sophomore keeper Jack Easterday kept the Eagles scoreless the first half. The second goal was scored by Sophomore Henry Black with a shot from the 18 yard line. Sophomore Wesley Good with an assist on that goal. The Eagles scored their only goal from a penalty kick they received from a questionable call by the referee. by Wayne Bisard

Girls Varsity Volleyball beat Olivet High School 3-0 Thursday, September 26, 2019 5:00 PM

The Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Olivet for a non-conference match. The Warriors made it an early night beating The Eagles in three sets (25-16,2520,25-17). The girls played strong on all aspects of the court controlling the game. Anna Lockridge and Jasmine Carr had a combined total of 15 kills for the night. Each player out on the court contributed defensively for a combined total of 43

digs. Once again Amber Boomer was perfect at the service line going 14-for14 with 11 service points. Andrea Kleine had 13 assists for the night. The Warriors travel to Manchester Tuesday night for a big conference match up. By Cassie Andonian
