The science behind sporting success at Bosworth Academy The Bosworth Academy Under 19s Table Tennis Team has progressed to the Area Final (National Semi-Final) after coming second place in a Zone Tournament! The team’s success could be put down to the science behind sporting success taught by PE teachers at the Academy.

Advice that the Physical Education faculty gives to students is in line with some of the world’s leading athletes and sports heroes, which is to get enough uninterrupted sleep the nights before and after training or matches as it regenerates the body and mind.

Students are encouraged not to eat or drink prior to sleeping or use mobile devices, or have ‘blue light’ such as monitors or TV screen in bedrooms as these can heavily disrupt their sleep in impair performance.

Nutrition and diet leading up to training or a match is incredibly important. A planned and structured diet ensures that the body is receiving the correct balance of carbohydrates, protein and fluids to reach top performance. Typically, students should eat carbohydrate heavy food (pasta, bread, cereals etc.) prior to a match as these contain slow release energy that will last all day. In between matches, students are advised to consume sugary food and drink such as sweets and Lucozade Sport as these contain short release energy for their impending match.

It is also important for students to keep hydrated during exercise as it replenishes fluid lost through sweating. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness and muscle cramps; which can hinder performance during training and matches.

The artwork, crafted by local specialist stone sculptor, Damian Witty, will be officially revealed at 3.30 as part of a medieval themed event in the Market Place. Captain Mortimer and his reenactors will be there, plus the award winning Hawk wise from the Battlefield Centre, Medieval music, a special mobile cinema, Bosworth Battlefield retail stall, the community choir and much more. It is planned that bunting and floral displays in the colours of Richard lll will be hung around the Square, and white roses will decorate shop windows.

The events are free, and commence at 1pm, concluding at 5pm.

In addition to the “Richard lll” funds, the commemoration has been supported

by Hinckley and Borough Council and with the input of a small number of local volunteers.

Newbold Verdon Garden Club A very enjoyable evening was shared with our Garden club members on 15th February. The speaker was John Page and his wife Kate. John showed us pictures of four RHS gardens including Harlow Carr and Rosemoor. We will be inviting John back next year.

February Monthly Meeting Our February 15th meeting gave us yet another major change of direction. Our guest speaker was Kate Moore whose illustrated talk, “Andes to Amazon”, gave an amazing insight into her travels through Bolivia including crossing the largest salt lake in the world and swimming with river dolphins in the jungle. A journey not without its dangers, and not just from the wildlife. Not exactly the sort of trip a travel agent would recommend as a package tour!

Verdon Players ‘Focus’ into rehearsals.

The players are well into rehearsal now for our next production ‘Out Of Focus’.

This hilarious comedy was written

by Peter Gordon, the same author of our last production, ‘Murdered to Death’, enjoyed last year by both the cast and audiences alike.

The action in this hilarious play centres around ‘The Church Hall’ See the latest ‘Newsletter’ (right) produced by the author, as an ‘introduction’ to the plot and some of the characters.

The performances will take place at Newbold Verdon Primary School at 7.30pm on Friday & Saturday 21st 22nd April.

We move into the modern world with our 3rd April Lecture, from Berlin to Bridlington. Here we see two very contrasting British contemporary artists, Lucien Freud and David Hockney. For over sixty years Lucien Freud painted portraits of his friends and family from life. His images are powerful and uncompromising, he demanded many hours of sittings and needed to establish a rapport with his subjects. He died in 2011 leaving a heritage of wonderful paintings that place him at the forefront of modern European art.

Student Lifeguard leading the way in safe swimming Bosworth Academy Sixth Form student Lauren Bailey combines her passion for swimming with her extended learning qualifications to help keep swimmers safe in the Academy’s pool.

As part of her extended learning qualification, Lauren identified a need to improve safety information in the swimming pool environment. Lauren produced a research methodology to help her understand more on how the public views and responds to safety information in the swimming pool environment.

The resulting analysis of her research helped her understand and prioritise real issues which were then used to form the creative design of a new range of safety posters in the pool area, as well as an improved way of displaying them.

The project involved working with a professional design and communications agency to produce a range of information and safety posters for use in the pool.

The Future Generation of The Black Horse Restaurant For one night only we decided to let our children free in the Black Horse Restaurant in order to Raise money for Make A Wish UK, a charity dedicated to granting magical wishes for children. We allowed the children to do everything from taking orders to serving both food and drinks. The whole event went without a glitch apart from 1 smashed glass and a few nearly spilt soup bowls, which isn’t bad considering the children where aged 3 - 14. Throughout the evening there were numerous activities to raise extra money for the charity, such as a raffle, guess how many sweets were in the jar and an auction. I think the kids all did an amazing job and we may see a few of them working at the Black Horse in years to come.

All the money raised from the evening went to the charity including all food and drink profits from the evening. The total figure raised from the event was ÂŁ2832.12 which was a great success as the target was ÂŁ2000, we hope this helps grant lots of magical wishes. I would like to thank all the generous businesses in the local area for all there support and donations for raffle prizes and a huge thank you to the Black Horse staff for not only volunteering to work for the evening but also allowing us to use the restaurant as the venue for the event.

Dixie student donates 4 years worth of hair On Tuesday 21st February, a Year 10 student from Dixie Grammar School, Kyla Burton, had 10 inches of her hair cut in front of the whole school. Local hairdresser, Dean Goodwin-Evans, from Lily & Mabel in Market Bosworth, kindly agreed to make the cut, which has to follow strict guidelines so the hair is fit for purpose.

The hair is being donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs from real hair for children who are suffering from cancer. The fact that the wigs are made from real hair allows the children to straighten and style the hair almost as if it was their own.

The wigs are given to the children free of charge and cost around £250 each to make. The school held a non-uniform day the following day to raise money for the charity in support of Kyla’s inspirational act and, when added to the total raised by family and friends already, the total amount raised will be £1200.

The Little Princess Trust has recently extended its mission to include, when funds allow, the provision of financial assistance for research into the causes of childhood cancers and into minimising the effects of chemotherapy in children.

To make one wig, the charity needs 6 donations of a similar amount. Kyla was inspired to donate by one of her idols, the West End star, Carrie Hope Fletcher, who also donated her hair to charity. It has taken four years to grow it to the length she wanted to be able to donate.

Kyla said, “I’m really excited to be able to part of such an amazing charity.

The wigs they provide have a huge impact on the lives of children who need all the support they can get, give them confidence and help them feel good about themselves.”

Bishop Martyn began by leading our assembly and shared with us what being Bishop of Leicester involves. Later in the morning he answered questions from our Year 4 children (we know what football team he supports!) and visited St Giles Church with Year 2.

If you were asked to consider the character of the parish of Newbold Verdon what would be your description? Is it even possible to ascribe a set of characteristics to somewhere?

Well, yes, it is; if you set out to describe those physical features that contribute to giving a place its local distinctiveness and unique identity. As part of the Neighbourhood Plan process, members of the Steering Committee putting the plan together have done just this.

We have made a Character Assessment of the whole of the parish right down to individual roads, streets, avenues and drives, as well as the countryside contained within its 3 square miles. For each distinct area we attempted to describe the shape of the land; what it was being used for and any special features (for example: streams, woods, buildings, businesses) which gave the area its own unique sense of place. Most of us undertaking the assessment have lived in the parish for many years and yet, by looking closely and dispassionately, we each felt we had seen things about the area we had never noticed before, and most of what we saw led us to conclude the parish was on the whole a pretty good place in which to live.

We have, for example, a wide range of shops, services and facilities not available in many other Leicestershire villages.

Our residential areas range in character from the 18th Century terraced cottages of Church Row to the 21st Century houses on Old Farm Road and everything in between. The access to the countryside, either by lane or on footpaths, is easy and in all directions. And though not as picturesque as some other nearby parishes, the village and our two hamlets of Brascote and Newbold Heath has a character and distinctive features which deserve preservation and protection. Some features we found less attractive: tired shop fronts, limited play spaces for children, traffic congestion and poor parking, intrusive pylons and wind turbines were some of the less favourable aspects of our parish.

All of the information collected will contribute toward the recommendations that will be made to villagers in the future when the final Neighbourhood Plan is completed and submitted for approval. Directed by Chris Ball 26th to 29th of April Set in a church hall in Acton, London, this is the funny and moving story of a group of agoraphobic women who, as part of a self-help group, decide to break through their troubled and insular lives for one day at least by bravely staging a bazaar and rummage sale. Sue Townsend, author of the very popular Adrian Mole set of books, has crafted a very entertaining, witty and poignant play of ordinary people striving to overcome all obstacles in an effort to rejoin society. This play contains some adult themes and smoking.

Set in the seventies this is the sometimes funny, sometimes quite moving story of a self-help group of agoraphobics who set up a bazaar and rummage sale. Hindered by their controlling social worker, Gwenda, each of them start coming to terms with the outside world and the causes of their illness. Fliss, a trainee social worker, manages to keep them all together and by the time they leave the hall, it is apparent that their agoraphobia is not cured but at least they have made a start.

Morag Wilkes opened our meeting with a reading, this was something of a ‘swan song’ as Morag and her husband prepare to move to live in France. We will miss them both.

Birdnotes Alan Brooks and Derek Hart had a day out at Drakelow Reserve, a place they visit on a regular basis. They had a good sighting of a female Long tailed Duck which stayed around for 3 days. Also, an Egyptian Goose chasing Canada Geese and Greylag Geese. A fox showed very well, moving around the reserve.

Paxton Pits in Cambridgeshire being one area, with possibly 15/20 birds constantly heard. Just a complete wall of sound. Other birds namely Blackcap Warbler, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler competing also, but being completely out sung.

Although Leicestershire seems to lack the numbers seen in northern counties, like Durham, Yorkshire etc doing really well.

At this time of year we usually see the Starling murmaration around the village, but even this is absent. I have just read a back copy of my birdnotes for this month (March 2013) and one regular contributor reported from their garden, 1 pair of Reed bunting, 12 Longtailed Tit, 50+ Chaffinch. Another regular contributor reported 150+ Redpoll, 78 Lapwing, numerous Wildfowl (Gadwall, Teal etc).

1485 Triathlon Club open for 2017 memberships

We are delighted to be able to share the news that as I write this the implementation of our new IT Suite is nearing completion. Our new equipment provides fast internet access and a range of basic software to Library users, plus printing, copying and scanning facilities.

We have already received very positive feedback from one of our main users – the Newbold Verdon & District History Group – who tell us that it is a huge improvement for them. Come along and try us out – we can accommodate up to 10 users at any one time! Our thanks again to G Seller and Co for their generous donation which has partly funded this project. Funding was also received from the Hinckley and Bosworth Parish and Community Initiative Fund and Leicestershire County Council. Thanks especially to Bob Renner without whom this just would not have happened!

Thanks to Volunteers we will be doing our own grounds maintenance and we are also keen to take the internal cleaning inhouse from the start of April. I am also pleased to report that at our last Committee meeting we agreed to start a programme of regular visits by pupils of Newbold Verdon Primary School. All class groups will have the opportunity to come to the Library one afternoon a week to introduce them to what we can offer, and to support the various projects etc. that they are undertaking. We have some super facilities for our younger members and it is important for them to be aware of them. This is planned to start in mid-March, and is another step towards our aim of giving everyone in Newbold, Barlestone and surrounding area a reason to visit Our Library.

Also for our younger members, we will shortly start planning for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which is called “Animal Agents”. From solving the case of the graffiti writing to the strange case of the missing lunch children can

join in the fun by reading six library books or e-books throughout the Summer and collecting rewards. All children taking part are also entitled to free admission to Bosworth Battlefield and Doningtonle-Heath Manor House by showing their Animal Agents folder at reception (one child per full-paying adult).

The book sale held in mid-February raised a total of £65 for Library funds over two days. Our thanks to all the Volunteers who helped to make this happen and to our customers for their generosity. We were delighted to hear that some of the non-fiction books have found a new home in the Dementia Café at Coalville.
