Local girl Holly (12) stars in national autism campaign and film

12 year old Holly from Newton Burgoland is autistic and has starred in the National Autistic Society’s new film and campaign to increase public understanding of autism.

The film follows Holly’s character on a single day, showing how overwhelming everyday situations can be when autistic

people aren’t given enough time to process information.

More than 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum. This means that someone sees, hears and feels the world in a different, often more intense, way to other people. Autistic people often find social situations difficult and struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, which means they feel overwhelmed by ‘too much information’ when out in public.

This can also make it difficult to process information like questions, and autistic people can sometimes need more time to reply.

Jo, Holly’s mum, said: “We’re all so proud of Holly. Lots of 12-year-olds would be daunted by acting in a big film like this and speaking in front of her whole year group but Holly’s autism means she doesn’t get embarrassed as easily. “She’s come such a long way since her diagnosis five years ago. I feel like her autism could have been picked up earlier but, like many girls on the spectrum, she’s really good at masking her difficulties.

And then the real trouble started, as several of our members accepted Charlie’s invitation to get up and join in – and with sticks! It’s nothing short of a miracle that no-one was seriously injured, but with due credit to Charlie and the other MorrisMen they managed April Monthly Meeting to maintain a modicum of control, even if the rhythm displayed by some members It’s very difficult to know where to start was somewhat wayward! when describing our April guests, The Leicester MorrisMen! Our 100+ audience enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining afternoon and helped the MorrisMen raise a not inconsiderable sum for Rainbows Hospice.

Dove Bank Primary School pupils parade their funny faces for Red Nose Day As part of this year’s Red Nose Day, pupils at Dove Bank Primary School raised some all-important cash by taking part in their very own ‘Dress Funny for Money’ costume parade.

Showing off their fabulous creations, pupils took great delight in seeing each other’s painted faces, crazy clothes, zany wigs and red noses.

Pupil Bella, who dressed in a colourful tropical outfit said, “I loved taking part in Red Nose Day! It was great that we all got to wear totally different clothes to school.”

Another pupil, Scarlett added.

“Hopefully while we’ve been having fun, we’ve also raised lots of money to help the children across Africa go to school like us.”

Key Stage 1 Leader, Mrs Davies, who joined in the fun with fellow teachers and pupils, said, “It was really easy for the children to get involved and it was brilliant to see how much amusement everyone had wearing their funny costumes and wigs. More importantly, it enabled the children to raise over £100 for Comic Relief in order to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the UK and Africa.”

Minimise Void Periods, Maximise Profitability!

It is a well known fact within the lettings industry that long void periods between tenancies can have a detrimental effect on the overall profitability for a landlord.

In our experience there are a number of steps that can be taken to help to minimise void periods and increase profitability for landlords.

Happy Tenants = Happy Landlords It is inevitable that at some point a tenancy will come to an end as tenants relocate, downsize, upsize or buy their next home. Research from 2016 has established that the average length of a tenancy in the UK is 18 months. At Howland Jones our landlords benefit from longer than average tenancies at 32 months and we feel this is down to our vision to create happy, long term tenants.

A successful tenant / landlord relationship often starts from day one. Prior to the start of a tenancy we work closely with our tenants to ensure referencing is complete preventing any delay to their move. It is strongly recommended that the property and all carpets are professionally cleaned prior to the start of a tenancy. Not only does this enable a tenant to move straight in without issues but it also means that we can insist that a property is returned in the same condition. This goes on to prevent a delay to the tenancy start date for the next tenant whilst work is carried out – it is a continuous circle!

Working alongside a professional letting agent can be a huge aid to creating happy tenants. At Howland Jones for example we offer 24/7 emergency contact for tenants to report urgent repair issues and as members of ARLA (The Association of Residential Letting Agents) tenants can be confident in the service that they receive.

Be Pro-Active When the time comes and your happy tenant decides to end their tenancy it is essential to be pro-active in finding a new tenant. A study in 2016 found that it takes an average of 22 days to find a new tenant. For Howland Jones, the average number of days for us to find a tenant throughout the whole of 2016 was 18 days, with many instances where tenants were secured in ZERO days!

We start to advertise a property as soon as notice has been received from an existing tenancy which allows a least one month for a new tenant to be secured and fully referenced. As a specialist independent letting agent we maintain a healthy database of professional prospective tenants who are contacted as soon as a 'matching property' becomes available. We offer accompanied viewings until 8pm in the evenings to allow tenants the opportunity to view around their working hours. In most cases new tenants have been secured and fully referenced before the exiting tenant has even moved out.

Occasionally a short void period can be advantageous for a landlord. A planned empty period between tenants allows a landlord to carry out maintenance work required to sustain the standard of property required to attract long term, quality tenants. For this reason it is important that landlords allow for void periods Hannah when calculating the possible profitability of their property.

illustrated how, despite very similar backgrounds, it was their choices that impacted most upon their ultimate fate and future. Bob and Bill moved to Coventry, again seeking work and were expected to contribute to their family income. Bill started a job at the Dunlop factory which he retired from 42 years later. Bob had a series of different jobs, even a spell in Australia before he too eventually retired.

Our April meeting was a little different from our usual lectures in that we were hosts to Derek Chattington who told us the fascinating story of his family history.

Derek set the scene by explaining how he came to live in Carlton nearly 30 years ago. Driving towards Bosworth he decided to call in for a comfort break. Whilst in Bosworth he saw his current house in an Estate Agent’s window and a few short weeks later that house became their home. Woven into the impressive story was the effect of chance on life and the choices one makes.

Derek’s story was built around two brothers, Bob and his younger brother by two years Bill. Whilst Derek’s story could go back further he started it with the journey of William and Elizabeth Chattington (née Banks) who travelled by foot from Halesowen to the Rhonda Valley in search of work and a better life. The journey took them several days and on arriving they found a hovel which they made their home. They had 9 children, one of whom, William, was the father of Bob and Bill. Sadly William died aged just 42 of pneumosilicosis, Elizabeth Chattington who made that killed by the anthracite dust in the mine walk all the way from Halesowen to the Rhonda Valley he was working in.

I cannot do real justice to the story here but I would recommend anyone with an interest in family history to invite Derek to tell his story. I for one certainly enjoyed the telling of this life story.

I would like to add that recently Derek had suffered a broken hip but he still turned up with his walking frame to deliver his talk, something that the audience truly appreciated. A real trooper. Thank you, Derek.

I have some exciting news. In fact the project is moving forward at a very commendable pace, thanks largely to the people of Bosworth. Let me explain.

We have been successful in our main funding request and I am delighted to say that the Heritage Lottery Fund have given their approval to our request and have confirmed that we may commence the project. We still have two further applications pending for finance with other bodies and we will hear from them in late April and mid-May. We have begun our search for a Project Leader (a temporary self-employed post spanning the two years of our project).

Community Transport Celebrates Government donates a new Minibus for local people from the Community Minibus Fund. Hinckley & Bosworth Community Transport are delighted to announce that the Department of Transport has donated a brand-new Mercedes Benz minibus to support the essential service it provides within the community which is a clear indication that the Government acknowledges the value of communitybased transport and is particularly proud that our long-established local community transport scheme has been singled out to continue its work to benefit local people. The dark blue “Sprinter” mini-bus has been adapted to be fully accessible for people who have mobility difficulties. It has a capacity for 16 passengers or 15 and 1 wheelchair user

Rhys Dandy watched a single Swift at Sence Park, the only one seen so far this year. Rhys also had two House Martins at Cropston on 16th April.

I had a visit from Chris Griffin of Newbold Verdon to show me photographs of a project undertaken by himself and Nick Crowley to attract Swifts in the village.

Funding the project themselves, Chris and Nick have had 8 wooden nest boxes made by a local retired joiner which have been located at Newbold Verdon Church Hall. The boxes have been painted in a brick red to match the brickwork of the hall. Let’s hope they are successful in attracting Swifts.

I had my first sighting of a single Swallow in High Street, Ibstock on the 5th of April around midday.

Den Smith rang to tell me up to 3 Swallows had been seen flying around the farm of the late Dr Cantwell on the 8th

of April probably looking for their usual nesting sites.

Franco Onesti rang to say he had watched a Black Redstart at Carlton - a very good bird to see.

Margaret Gutteridge rang to say she had watched a single Swallow at Osbaston Hollow on the 9 April.

Gloria and I took a trip to Staunton Harold hall and watched several Swallows flying around but no sign of any House Martin.

David Perrins of Ellistown had Chiffchaffs calling, possibly 3, also a Green Woodpecker, a single Buzzard and Yellowhammer.

Tony Lee also watched a single House Martin locally.

Mark of Swepstone had Garden Warbler, a regular fox, a Sparrowhawk and several bats.

Den Smith mentioned the Sand Martins had returned to Kelham Bridge Reserve and had been looking at the nesting wall and showing lots of interest, but no reports of the same at Sence Park yet.

The 5 Whooper Swans that had wintered at Sence Park left for their breeding quarters some time ago and hopefully will return again to winter with us.

Graham Pettit rang to say he had watched a pair of Gadwall Ducks and a pair of Little Grebe, also a pair of Whinchat and

Skylark. Graham and I talked over past times about Sence Park and surrounding areas and the species we watched that are absent now. We never seem to get the beautiful Yellow Wagtail that in past years used the park and was always seen locally on a yearly basis, even the Grey Wagtail another regular and a resident is absent. Snipe seem to get less each year and the species of duck are getting less yearly. Lapwing with that lovely call are no longer seen or if so in very small numbers. Common Snipe are very few and the Wildfowl numbers have dropped considerably, both in Sence Park and the local Kelham Bridge Reserve.

I had a very nice email with a photograph from Paul Burton of Coalville of Long Tailed Tits building their beautiful nest, a pair of Pintail Ducks and a Treecreeper.

Paul also had a Ring Ouzel one of our earliest migrants at the Warren Hills area, Coalville.

Matt Pettit watched a mixed flock of colourful Bullfinch locally.

Margery Ridgeway of Ibstock rang to tell me their usual Great Tits are sitting on 8 eggs in their camera nest box and, also a pair of blackbirds are on eggs in their shrubbery. Margery rings me every year with delight in her voice to tell me about their Great Tits which never fail to turn up

Twycross students on stage Under a colourful circus canopy in Underwood, Form 5 (Year 6) performed a full scale production of Jacqueline Wilson’s ‘Hetty Feather’. Through hard work and determination the students rose to the occasion to produce two excellent performances with students learning many lines and some playing a variety of roles. Congratulations to the ‘Little Stars’.

The senior production this term was a variety performance of song and dance from the most celebrated musicals since 1935. The students’ energy and enthusiasm shone through onstage and their performances were professional and captivating.

The production was also a fitting tribute to the New Hall which has been the main performance space at Twycross House for the last 40 years. It will be excellent to see what will be on display in the new home – The Kirkpatrick Theatre which is under construction at the moment for completion in September which such a talented group of individuals and emerging stars lower down the school.

Talented Young Chef Excels in Rotary District Final At just thirteen years of age, participating in a competition open to students up to seventeen years old, Mae Wilkinson took a well-deserved third place in the district final of the Rotary Young Chef competition.

Pictured here are her proud mum, teacher Mrs Wright and Rotarian John Whitehead and of course Mae herself. John enthused, “As we have come to expect of her, Mae displayed an accomplished range of cookery skills, confidently creating an asparagus and Parma ham starter with a soft poached egg, a prawn and pea rissotto and an outstandingly complex lemon souffle.” He added, “The Rotary Club of Market Bosworth hope to continue their links with The Market Bosworth School and encourage more students to follow Mae’s footsteps by entering the next Young Chef competition in the autumn.”
