The war memorial on Central Avenue in Ibstock bears two lads under the name of Barrs, Jack was the elder of the two and was killed in September 1916. Both Jack and his brother George were employed at the Ellistown colliery alongside their father. George also served with the Leicestershire Regiment but with the 1st/5th Battalion. The Barrs William Harper lived at 108 Whitehill family lived on Richmond Road which at Road and worked at Ellistown Colliery the time was part of the Ellistown parish. at the far end of the village. May 1917 This month we remember four local lads who died during WW1, all four came from Ellistown.

Arthur Quilter lived on Battram Road before he enlisted with the 2/5th Bn Leicestershire Regiment. In mid-March 1917 the Germans began falling back to the Hindenburg Line, a heavily fortified construction behind their existing lines known as Operation Alberich. They destroyed everything on the ground that they left: flattening villages, poisoning wells, cutting down trees, blowing craters on roads and crossroads, booby-trapping ruins and dugouts.

All four of these stories are told in more detail in the Ibstock Historical Society’s book, Lest We Forget.

It was around this time in 1917 that Ibstock’s Alty Adcock started his time in uniform. This story can be found in the Society’s follow up book, Left to Grow Old, which tells 150+ stories of men and women who served their country during the Great War in various capacities but were able to return to their families.

No story of Ibstock would be complete without at least one Adcock. Alfred or Alty as he would become known, was born in Ibstock on the 23rd May, at the time his parents kept the Waggon & Horses pub on Curzon Street. In the summer of 1914 Alty married Elsie Webb of Whitwick and they had one son, Robert, who was born towards the end of 1916. Sence Valley Ladies

Whitwick and District U3A The next monthly meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be on Friday 19th May: this will be the Annual General Meeting. In addition, it will be another opportunity to discover what the U3A has to offer to retired people or those approaching retirement.

Our members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups with something to cater for most tastes. At the AGM, Group Leaders and others will be on hand to answer any questions and pass on information about our U3A.

Sence Valley Ladies are a group of ladies who meet on a monthly basis at Heather Primary School, Main Street, Heather and have interesting talks and demonstrations.

We are a non-profit making group, and every year we donate monies to a different charity chosen by the members each year. We welcome any new ladies who would like to join us.

New Adventure Play Frame for Snarestone Primary School Children Snarestone Primary unveiled its new Adventure Play Frame after the Easter Break. Wow! Is the word that most children used! This would not have been possible without the support from UKCSMR Ltd and the Minorca Community Fund which helped us to replace our existing frame.

The school council had lots of different companies draw up designs then picked their favourite – a collaborative and unanimous vote for the frame that now has pride of place. Governors,

parents and members of the village helped take down the old frame and prepare the ground ready for installation and came back to sweep and tidy ready for the big reveal! This has been a whole school community project that really showed how special our school is.

This sustainable project will be enjoyed by hundreds of children, who will come to our school over the coming years, and it has really enhanced our playground and will promote a continued love of outdoor exploring and learning. Being active has never been so much fun!

Ibstock in Bloom and Ibstock Historical Society Working Together Members of Ibstock in Bloom have worked with members of the Historical Society to develop the Ibstock History and HeritageTrail.

This is a short walking trail from St Denys Church, along the High Street to Chapel Street and then returning on the west side of the High Street, up Gladstone Street and back to the starting point via Melbourne Road. Numerous points of historical interest are highlighted along with photos of how the buildings or street scene looked in years gone by. The leaflets cost £2 from 57 High Street, the Post Office and Ibstock Historical Society’s stall at the Saturday Community Mornings at the Palace.

The Landmark Sculpture features at the end of the Trail. Ibstock in Bloom used funding from the Central England Cooperative Community Dividend Scheme, together with monies raised from the fortnightly plant stall, to place an interpretation board next to the Ibstock Landmark Sculpture and Time Capsule.

The board has a short explanation of each of the brightly coloured scenes on the sculpture which was erected in 1998.

Surrounding the board are lots of daffodils planted by In Bloom. 1000 bulbs came through North West Leicestershire’s Green Shoots grants and were also planted in the verges opposite St Denys Church and on the edges of the woodland area at the Pretoria Road Cemetery. 1000 English bluebells were also obtained through the same scheme and were planted amongst the young trees in the Cemetery.

Celebrating Diversity at Newton Burgoland Primary School

Pupils enjoyed 2 days of educatio fun and learned about many differ aspects of Hinduism including worsh values and lifestyle, with special visit to the school from Hinduism Educat Services.

The first day was based around theme of the wedding of Rama a Sita and the children loved taking p in a mock wedding. Pupils also enjoy dressing up to take part in Hindu stor along with face and hand painti learning about Diwali, taking part traditional dances, playing gam and learning about the importance showing respect in Hinduism.

Mark Lever, Chief Executive of the National Autistic Society, said: “We know that people don’t set out to be judgmental towards autistic people. The problem is that they often don’t see the autism, they just see the ‘tantrum’ or the ‘difficult person’ and this is making autistic people feel isolated.

This can also make it difficult to process information like questions, and autistic people can sometimes need more time to reply.

Birdnotes Rhys Dandy watched a single Swift at Sence Park, the only one seen so far this year. Rhys also had two House Martins at Cropston on 16th April.

I had a visit from Chris Griffin of Newbold Verdon to show me photographs of a project undertaken by himself and Nick Crowley to attract Swifts in the village.

Funding the project themselves, Chris and Nick have had 8 wooden nest boxes made by a local retired joiner which have been located at Newbold Verdon Church Hall. The boxes have been painted in a brick red to match the brickwork of the hall. Let’s hope they are successful in attracting Swifts.

I had my first sighting of a single Swallow in High Street, Ibstock on the 5th April around midday.

Wraggs Yard comes up trumps for children of Newton Burgoland Wraggs Yard is a charity based in a Newton Burgoland. It’s aim has always been to provide for our community. This project is no different and is aimed at the smallest members of our community. We’ve been fantastically supported by the Minorca Community Fund and Swepstone Parish Council. We as the trustees of Wraggs Yard have also raised funds through various events such as our annual barn dance (this year’s dance will be held on the 17th June, further info on our Facebook page).

We’d like to thank all those involved in making this project a great success.

Newton Burgoland Ex-Pupil’s Amazing Achievement Ex-pupil Holly has gained wide recognition and become an internet sensation after filming a video story of her life dealing with autism. (see page 12 for full story) Holly auditioned for the part and was successfully cast in the short film, which shows elements of a day in the life of an autistic person, and how difficult some situations can be for those with the condition.

Within a few days of the film going live on the internet, it had over 5 million views and Holly’s story has also been featured in the Leicester Mercury. We wish Holly all the very best in her quest to raise awareness of Autism.

Feline Friends and Sibling Cat Pairs awaiting Adoption It is always harder to re-home pairs of pets rather than individuals, but they are actually easier to look after as they keep each other company and they play with each other when you have to be out. Being together also reduces the stress of a move (as it would with humans too).

At Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, (which is situated on the side of the A511 between Markfield and Ellistown), we currently have several ‘pairs’ of cats – siblings and bonded pairs – who cannot be separated as they, quite simply, love one another.
