March 1917 The First World War spanned four years and three months, only six of those months did not feature a death from someone born or living in this area.

Ibstock features many times. This month we remember four men who died within just twelve days of each other.

Charles Walker was born in Ibstock in 1893. At the time of enlisting he was living at 22 The Green in Hugglescote.

On the 20th December 1914 the Germans blew ten small mines under the positions held by the Indian Corps at Givenchy, enabling them to capture the ground almost unopposed. As a result of this, the British created their own tunneling companies. Charles’s mining experience saw him recruited to the 174th Tunnelling Company of the Royal Engineers. Charles landed in

France on the 28th November 1915 and in January 1916 had a narrow escape when a house where he and a party of tunnellers were resting in, was hit by a shell, burying many, including Charles.

During October 1916 the 174th moved north of the Ancre, facing BeaumontHamel and faced danger on a daily basis – the enemy blowing a countercharge, underground gasses, flooding or tunnel collapse. The exact detail are not available but we know Charles was tilled on 6th March 1917.

During the night of the 13th/14th March the North Staffs Force battalions assaulted Bucquoy Graben. Leaving their assembly point at 6pm the battalions slogged 5 miles in pouring rain, through a congested Fonquenvillers that was being shelled, reaching Rossignol Wood by nearly 10pm. Biez Wood was not reached until midnight. The taped jumping off point was about 500 yards from the enemy.

It seems a familiar story of a rigid artillery with shells falling short, a delay in zero hour, uncut wire and an enemy ready and waiting, pre-warned by the shelling. The few who managed to gain a foothold in the enemy trenches were bombed out or overwhelmed. Many failed to get through the third belt of wire and this ill-conceived attack failed at a very high cost to the North and South Five days later on the 14th March another Staffordshire men. March Events planned in Ibstock Community Garden and Under 5’s Playground As the days lengthen and the weather gets a little warmer volunteers and gardeners will be holding their first working party to kick start the 2017 growing season on Saturday 4 March. Further volunteer maintenance days will be held on the first Saturday of every month from until September.

On 25th March there will be a card and coffee afternoon raising funds for the Garden. From 2 – 4pm Phoenix Cards will have a stall in the old Youth building opposite the Garden gate.

The garden is open in daylight hours for anyone to have a wander round and enjoy the space. There are still some plots available if you feel like having a go at growing your own food this summer. Ibstock in Bloom previously raised money to clear and plant the flower beds in the Playground and now organise occasional maintenance sessions. The next session will involve clearing all last year’s growth and weeding the beds to ensure lots of summer flowers. The more hands to help the better the Playground will look.

No experience is necessary but please bring gloves and, if you have them, shears, secateurs and/or a fork too. Some tools will be provided. If you live nearby can we borrow your green bin? Just bring it over to the Playground on the morning.

Ukulele Day at Snarestone Primary School Swallows, Herons and Kingfishers enjoyed a FANTASTIC Ukulele Day! First they had to make their very own ukuleles from scratch out of pieces of wood, margarine tubs and fishing wire. Then they tuned their instruments and learned how to play, culminating in an incredible ukulele performance in front of the rest of the school, parents and governors . . . and all in just one day!

Virtual Field Work, Meditation and More on Humanities Day

Humanities students at Ibstock Community College visited Moscow, the Great Wall of China and the tallest skyscraper on Earth – all without leaving the comfort of their classroom.

The virtual reality field work was made possible by the Google Expeditions Pioneer Programme.

Students used virtual reality headsets to explore the three locations. Teachers acted as guides, leading students through 360’, 3D images of the sites and pointing out details of interest.

The Google expedition was part of a full day of humanities activities for all students.

This included a practical meditation session, a model building workshop, and a history quiz where students researched answers using their own mobile devices.

Carl Edwards, head of humanities, said: “The humanities day was absolutely fantastic. We have had so much positive feedback.

“One student said he felt as if he had actually visited the places that we saw on our Google expedition. Others said they found the meditation very calming and that it helped them to unwind.”

One often sang near us in some conifers and it was a joy to hear, out singing both the Blackbirds and Song Thrush. I would say its song is next to the Nightingale, which no other British bird can match.

I have some superb recordings of Nightingales (personally recorded by myself) around England. Paxton Pits in Cambridgeshire being one area, with

I have just read a back copy of my birdnotes for this month (March 2013) and one regular contributor reported from their garden, 1 pair of Reed bunting, 12 Longtailed Tit, 50+ Chaffinch. Another regular contributor reported 150+ Redpoll, 78 Lapwing, numerous Wildfowl (Gadwall, Teal etc).

Jackdaw A very large of noisy Jackdaws are in the group of tall trees between Brookside and Chapel Street, Ibstock, flying back and forth constantly all day long. I usually get lots of reports at this time of year, but at the moment things are very quiet, with few reports which is worrying.

Even Winter visitors like Redpoll, Fieldfare and Redwing, which should be with us in large numbers, aren’t being reported, is it a sign of things to come.

Cinderella is coming to Coalville – submit your creative writing or artwork to be in with a chance of seeing her • Vienna Festival Ballet brings Cinderella to the Century Theatre, Coalville, with help from North West Leicestershire District Council sponsorship • NWLDC to give away 20 pairs of tickets to winners of art and writing competition • Competition closes on Friday 31 March, with the winners announced in April Aspiring young writers and artists in North West Leicestershire are in with a chance of winning tickets to see Cinderella performed by the Vienna Festival Ballet when it visits Coalville in May. Entries are now being sought in a competition that requires young people aged up to 18 years-old to submit artwork or a piece of writing based on Coalville’s future, using the theme of #CreativeCoalville.

The best entries will receive a pair of tickets to see Cinderella performed live on stage at the Century Theatre on Friday 19 May, with entries judged in three age groups and from dance schools. Entries can be in the form of an A3 poster, or a piece of writing (up to 500 words).

All entries will be displayed at the Century Theatre in Coalville as part of the council’s welcome to the Vienna Festival Ballet, and also on the dedicated Coalville website www.choosecoalville.co.uk 15
