Bosworth Academy Celebrate A Level Success Bosworth Academy students are once again celebrating amazing A Level results, with the majority of students having been able to access their university of choice.

Some of the individual stars were: Joe Aziz who gained 3 x A* & 1 x A and is now going to Birmingham to study Theoretical Physics.

Joe Murfitt who gained 3 x A* & 1 x A and is now going to Birmingham to study Medicine.

The Market Bosworth School Celebrate Fantastic GCSE Results

The Market Bosworth School are celebrating an astounding set of GCSE results. In its first full year of GCSE entries, over 76% of students gained 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, including Maths and English. This makes the school one of the highest achieving in the country compared to the 2015 national average (57.1%).

Letter to the Editor

This omission must also be disappointing for the children and families concerned so, come on School, don’t be shy, let’s hear more about your activities and pupil achievements.

Newbold Verdon Garden Club Our Garden Club resumes again on September 21st with our usual bring and share supper and short AGM. This time we are just having a casual get together for a chat, a drink from the bar and perhaps an easy quiz. At the time of writing this we are having a nice spell of summer weather, but the forecast is rain tomorrow which the gardens are in need of.

Newbold Verdon Jazz Club It is twelve years since the running of the jazz club was taken over by a new committee when Pete Lay and The Gambit Jazzmen were the first band to play for the new organisers. On the first Friday in August, they made a return appearance to once again entertain us.

The band has seen quite a few changes since then but they still have a great line up and play wonderful traditional jazz.

Guest clarinettist, John Maddocks was joined by Alan Gresty on trumpet and Barry Weston on trombone; supported

by Andy Maynard on banjo and Roger Link on double bass and of course their leader Pete Lay on drums. They provided an evening enjoyed by a large audience of jazz fans.

The October concert at Newbold Verdon Social Club is on October 7th when we welcome back Doc Houlind’s Revival All Stars. The origins of this Danish band hark back to the early 70’s when Doc Houlind formed his original band playing the Dixieland jazz popularised by the likes of ‘Kid’ Ory, Louis Armstrong and George Lewis. Originally a percussionist, ‘Doc’ realised his ultimate dream of leading the front line of a New Orleans style band when switching to trumpet in 2004. With numerous tours of Europe and New Orleans under their belts, and a hardcore rhythm section, we are assured of a good night of traditional jazz.

Newbold Verdon Library hosts an author’s evening with Stewart Bint and D.M. Cain Earlier this month, the newly independent library (Our Library) in Newbold Verdon was the venue for a very entertaining evening with not just one but two authors.

A number of people from the community and the writers club were treated to an enchanting evening of stories and anecdotes from the pair, who took them through their early lives, jobs, writing, being published and where they are now.

Fiction writers Stewart Bint and DM Cain both live in Desford, which came as rather a surprise to them as they had met through Twitter and spoken to each other about writing over many months. During one of their later communications, they learnt that not only did they live in the same village but actually on the same road.

Stewart was inspired to write stories from a very early age after a misspent childhood watching the Sci-fi time traveller Doctor Who and his companions explore the universe in different time zones. Stewart followed a career in journalism, once being a news presenter with the BBC, an article writer for a local magazine and a football reporter for the Hinckley Times. He didn’t become a published author until quite late in life, whilst his target to be published by the time he was 30 was missed, it was 2012 at the age of 56 when he self-published his first book on Amazon in digital format. He has since worked with a number of publishers and attained great success releasing many books including ‘The Jigsaw and the Fan’, ‘Up Close and Personal’ and ‘Thunderlands’. One of his latest releases, ‘Timeshaft’ is a time travelling story set in the twenty-seventh century: Mankind has finally mastered time travel - and is driving recklessly towards wiping itself out. The guerrilla environmentalist group WorldSave, with its chief operative Ashday’s Child, uses the Timeshaft to correct mistakes of the past in an effort to extend the life of the planet. But the enigmatic Ashday’s Child has his own destiny to accomplish, and will do whatever it takes within a complicated web of paradoxes to do so.

‘In Shadows Waiting’ is a change from his normal genre entering the world of paranormal and horror, loosely based on one of his own personal experiences: “The story is told by Simon, who lives with his parents and two sisters. He lives in a normal house has a normal family and so does not expect the abnormal. He has just finished his A levels and looking forward to some time off, but he begins to see shadows outside passing the windows of his home. At first he thinks they are just that, but he soon realises they aren’t.

Then the rest of the family start seeing too, and life takes an unexpected turn as they prepare to believe in ghosts. I really enjoyed this simply because everything starts out so normal until peculiar things begin to happen.

Pretty scary in parts, but a great read which leaves you wondering what it was you just saw from the corner of your eye!

(Extract from Amazon Review by Kazz Moss) Stewart is currently writing ‘To Rise Again’; a story based in World War II. Gemma had a healthy imagination as a child and, embracing her fantasy world, wrote her first book at the age of just 13.

She studied English and Psychology at Leicester University and then took a two-year post in Japan teaching English. Whilst in Japan, Gemma managed to climb Mount Fuji and have a go at sumo wrestling. She then went on to be a primary school teacher at a local school where her pupils have helped her to write the end of one of her novels with their many imaginative ideas.

DM Cain (Gemma), not wanting to confuse her normal life with her authors tag, took on a pen name for her published books.

With a number of books already published including ‘Soren’ and ‘The Phoenix Project’ she is currently working through her ‘Light and Shadow Chronicles’ which are a dark, epic fantasy series about a centuries-long battle for dominance. The first book in the series is ‘A Chronicle of Chaos’: “In the deepest bowels of hell, five demons have been summoned, their bonds to the fires of damnation severed. For the first time in millennia, they have been called to the human realm to put an end to a battle that has raged for centuries.”

August Monthly Meeting Delia Bennett was our speaker at the August 17th meeting. Delia is a Leicestershire poet who writes and speaks about her life experiences from a very light-hearted and humorous perspective and certainly entertained our members with tales from her youth right through to the present day. Her sense of humour was infectious and the poems, many with a poignant twist, were thoroughly enjoyed by her audience.

Our Arts & Crafts Group, who meet on the 2nd Wednesday every month, had made some highly-decorated Twiddlemuffs for use by those suffering from Dementia, and are modelled in the photo by members of the group (ably assisted by Andy!).

Sue Mirams, our Groups Co-ordinator, is seen on the right of the second picture presenting the Twiddlemuffs to Kathy Gill from Dementia Friends (part of The Alzheimer’s Society). Kathy had given a talk to 25 of our members at a special meeting earlier in the year.

You do need to be a West Leicestershire U3A member to join these groups although visitors are welcome on a taster basis for an additional £2 per session (maximum of 3 visits to groups/monthly meetings).

Cover Story: The sun shone on the Barlestone Fun Day, organised by Cathie Watkins and a small team of volunteers,

and a great time was had by all who came along. The event kicked off with a children’s fancy dress competition with the theme of “Book Characters”, and the afternoon included a children’s assault course and tug of war, a circus workshop and performances by the ukulele band and local singer, Kate Field. There were a variety of stalls and sideshows including a bouncy castle and slide, children’s’ rides and fun activities, face painting, raffles, tombola, craft stalls, produce, etc. Lots of charities were supported during the event with stalls supporting their chosen charity of good cause including Menphys, the Community First Responders, local playgroup First Steps, the Market Bosworth Young Farmers and the Women’s Institute. Runners from Seller’s Undertakers also included the event in their “2016 miles in 2016” challenge to raise money for the Dorothy Goodman

School in Hinckley. Whilst the event is primarily focussed on encouraging the Barlestone community spirit, any profits made on the event activities such as the refreshments and tombola will be distributed to local charities, these will be decided once we have collated all costs and monies received. Local restaurant Bangla Kitchen, who sponsored the event advertising, also held a charity dinner on the same evening and will be donating 20% of their proceeds to the local charities chosen to be supported by the event committee.

Students, Parents and Staff Cycling Together for Open Hands For the third year, Bosworth Academy staff, students and parents are taking part in the Open Hands ‘Tour De Leicestershire’ which will circumnavigate the city starting and ending at Bosworth Academy, Desford. This 76 mile sportive begins with quite a bit of climbing through the Charnwood Hills, before returning to the Dixon’s farm in Hungarton for lunch.

Most of the route is new for 2016. The aim of the ride is to participate in a well organised challenging cycle ride and provide valuable funds for Leicester based charity Open Hands. Dave Bennett, Assistant Principal Bosworth Academy says, “The Tour De Leicester is an event where staff, students and parents can all share a great experience, encouraging and spurring each other on.” “Interest in cycling has grown so much over the past few years not least due to Team GB’s performance Pictured bottom right of magazine cover in Rio this year. Phenomenal GCSE Success at Bosworth Academy Bosworth Academy students and staff are celebrating our best ever GCSE outcomes.

Results are the highest the academy has ever seen across the board.

Birdnotes Our bird life is in a very critical declining situation, especially our migrant birds. Turtledoves have suffered a 91% decline across Europe since 1980; mainly due to shooting in the Mediterranean Islands, especially Malta who are still doing so, despite a EU spring hunting directive banning it. Our nightingales are also down 91%. Dr Chris Hewson of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) states, “for every 10 nightingales which were singing in Britain when I was born 40 years ago, only one is doing so now, the rest of them have vanished, that’s the scale of what we are talking about. Pretty sobering isn’t it”. I have some very good recordings of nightingales that I personally made many years ago at various location, but never in Leicestershire. A venue that was always guaranteed to be superb was Paxton Pits in Huntingdon. Up to 12-15 pairs always bred there and to hear so many was simply breathtaking. They seemed to compete with each other. I believe that odd ones still breed there and if you have never listened or heard nightingales then it is certainly worth a visit.

RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk was another very good place to hear them and again I have some excellent recordings from there.

In my opinion, there is no other bird that sings so beautifully and so powerful. I often play these recordings and never tire of hearing them. If we lose this Nightingale special bird in Britain it will be devastating.

Jamie Smith of Ibstock called to see me and showed me a photograph of a very large bird sitting on a roof taken at Newton Burgoland of what Jamie thought was an Eagle Owl. In my opinion it certainly was an Eagle Owl. Eagle Owls are the world’s largest owl and have bred for a number of years in England, mainly North Yorkshire moors and the Forest of Bowland Lancs. The North Yorkshire birds successfully raised a total of 23 young between 1997 and 2005 but have had little success since, although eggs and nests have been found abandoned with no apparent reason other than disturbance?

Margaret Dover of Kirby Mallory had a Ringed Necked Parakeet in her garden constantly for 3 weeks eating all her cherries. Natural England has issued a licence for someone to kill up to 10 Ringed Neck Parakeet Buzzards (to prevent serious damage to young Pheasants).

Pheasants are not a native species to the UK, and are bred solely for sport.

According to 2011 figures over 50 million non-native species of game birds (pheasant and red-legged-

Again a species we again can ill afford to lose. By the end of this month the majority of our migrant birds will have left us. Apparently one of our migrant warblers, Blackcap Warblers are wintering in Britain in numbers, and have been doing so for several years with no ill affects.

Lots of white butterflies have been around our garden, sometimes in small groups, but I am not sure if they are Small White or the troublesome Cabbage White, being too quick for me to focus on. Red Kites are a bird that seems to have made a superb recovery in Leicestershire with birds being report from around the county on a regular basis, also Ravens seem to be doing well in the county with birds being reported regularly. Local news is a little sparse this month probably due to people spending time watching the Olympic Games and not getting outdoors. For all reports and sightings please ring 01530/262620.

August was a very busy month for our team, with attendance at Barlestone Fun Day (thanks to everyone who came to see us), our first Author Evening, which was a great success, and the launch

of Arts and Crafts from Ali Groschl. In addition, we played host to an excellent Olympic Craft Day arranged by The Friends of Newbold Verdon as well as our other regular events such as the cinema, Knit and Stitch, Scrabble Club, etc. I think that list demonstrates that we offer much more than a simple library.

Of course we would always like to see more of you there – so come along to one of our events – you will be surprised how much fun they can be!

In previous months, I have talked about the Summer Reading Challenge, and we are delighted to report that at the time of writing no less than 76 children have registered, and most are well on the way to completing it. We would also like to thank the Knit and Stitch group who have given their wholehearted support in making Roald Dahl characters. By the time you read this, the challenge will have ended, and we hope everyone who registered will have completed it.

Our initial Arts and Crafts sessions have gone well, and in September Ali will be offering two workshops featuring Tiffany Stained Glass – on 15th and 22nd from 10 till 12. If you are interested, please contact Ali directly at smartsy@hotmail.co.uk or on 07565 449695. We hope to be able to offer further workshops on a range of topics in the future.

As I said last time, we are planning to start a regular Dementia Café for sufferers and their supporters at the library.

We now have a provisional date of Thursday 13th October for this. Details are still being finalised, and will be included in the next edition of The Graphic.

Since we took over the library in January, our focus has been to continue to provide the library service as it stood. We are now starting to make minor changes in the light of experience, and regular users may have noticed that we have moved some sections around and changed the way that others are organised. Do let us know what you think. Our opening hours have also remained unchanged, and these are now under review. The final hour on a Wednesday (6 to 7) is typically very quiet, so we are planning to close at 6, but to add an hour on a Monday when we currently close at 5. These changes will be made on a trial basis initially from 1st October. Again, any views would be welcome.

Finally our team would like to wish our friends at Market Bosworth Community Library all the best. They took over from the County Council during August.

2016 is becoming quite an eventful year for Newbold Verdon & District History Group. After it was announced that Our Library @ Newbold Verdon volunteer group would be taking over the running of the library, we decided to make some improvements to our group to fall in line with all the changes at the village library that would follow.

We voted on the new name for our group to allow us to participate in any projects that are historically related and the constitution was altered to allow for this to happen. A new management committee was created with every member within the group contributing within various roles to allow for more time to be spent with new and interested members with their research and integration within a friendly and welcoming group. All members are enthusiastically involved and the group is now running more efficiently with lots of ideas for the future.

We have had to take the difficult decision to introduce an annual subscription of £40 per member with effect from September 2016 as a result of the library becoming self-funding. The subscription monies will be allocated to the library for the provision of genealogical subscription sites and hire of facilities; our group insurance for our group members and sessions and refreshments. We also anticipate that some of the subscription will be put towards events, talks and trips.

For existing and any new members that may be interested in joining the group, the annual subscription can be paid as a whole or in two parts over the year.
