Newbold Verdon Primary School Celebrate ‘Good’ News The Governors and I would like to share the fantastic news that following our school inspection, our school is now classified as a GOOD school. This has been a tremendous achievement and we would like to thank all of the staff (past and present), volunteers and all of our families for continuing to support the school to attain this success. The children continue to be a real credit to the school and we are pleased that the academic progress that they have been making for the last three years has now been officially recognised. Some of the standout comments are: ● Pupils make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics from their different starting points. This includes the most able pupils, those who are disadvantaged and pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities. ● The school is a calm and orderly environment where pupils behave well. Pupils show consideration and respect towards adults and each other. They have positive attitudes to learning. ● Children make good progress in the early years. This is especially true in Reception.

Dixie’s Shoebox Appeal Students at the Dixie Grammar School have been working hard to play their part in the annual shoebox appeal to help give Christmas presents to children who otherwise would receive nothing. Indeed this year has seen a record total of 114 shoeboxes filled and sent off.

The appeal to support Operation Christmas Child began in October and the final count on Monday 14 November was 114 shoeboxes full of toys, the largest haul the school has ever donated. Pupils had been shown a short film in assembly about what a difference a shoebox full of small presents can make to a child living in poverty, in wartorn countries or as refugees. The pupils are now looking forward to hearing where the shoeboxes went, happy in the knowledge that somewhere in the world they will have made some children’s Christmas a little brighter.

November Monthly Meeting A last-minute change of speaker (brought about by illness) brought us Heather White from Dogs for Good as our November speaker. Heather is a Puppy Socialiser with the charity and gave us some amazing stories of what the puppies can get up to in their early days of being familiarised with our everyday world. Her presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by, and touched the hearts of, our members who proved extremely generous in making donations to the charity to help them continue their excellent work.

December Monthly Meeting Our meeting on 21st December will be our Christmas Party when our members will be entertained by local folk duo Brandywine Bridge, who are the former resident minstrels at Warwick Castle.

This meeting aims to let our members know that the festive season has most definitely arrived and is in full swing!! As last year, members will bring a plate of

Neighbourhood Plan Up and Running Newbold Verdon Neighbourhood Planning Committee, on behalf of the Parish Council, has started the process of creating a Neighbourhood Plan. This is a legally binding document that helps give local communities the power to influence much of what happens in their locality into the foreseeable future. It can help: • maintain our shops and services • conserve our heritage • support our amenities • preserve and protect our green spaces • influence housing developments • improve our access to the countryside Over the next few months the Neighbourhood Planning Committee will be contacting parishioners young and old, and every age in between, to ask you to tell us what you think of Newbold Verdon, Newbold Heath and Brascote. Once this has been done all the information received will be analysed

and along with information gathered from local and national government, the findings will help us shape another round of discussions with parishioners - this time checking back with the community to see if what we think you said is correct. If it is, then we get on with the job of writing the plan. Eventually the plan has to achieve approval by an external, independent examiner, the local authority and then you the parishioners in a referendum.

Housing Development At the heart of many neighbourhood plans is the question of what housing development should take place in an area.

Neighbourhood Plans cannot stop houses from being built but they can influence not only the types of developments but also where they are sited and what services and amenities need to be improved or protected in order for such developments to be a positive addition to the community.

Starting with an independent Housing Needs Survey in early January, the committee will be carrying out a number of fact-finding events in the New Year, gaining the views of all stakeholders: the district council, landowners, developers, and parishioners. The survey will be dropped through your door.

5 Anniversary Celebrations

Book Launch Celebrations

Five years of regular Wednesday walking, come hail, rain or shine, and an accumulated total of over 30,000 miles walked by members, deserved recognition by the Three Villages Walking Group at one of their November gatherings.

What do you do for a birthday but have a cake? And cutting the splendidly decorated cake, showing the Leicestershire countryside complete with gates, stiles, paths, posts and, of course, a pair of walking boots are the oldest and youngest members of our group: Margaret Smith, aged 86, and Belia Peacock, aged four.

On the 31st October, St James’s regular Monday morning Café Jacque played host to many of those who helped in the creation of a second book about the village, entitled Newbold Verdon 1920 – 1950: Recollections and Reflections.

Based on the recollections of our contributors, the book describes the life and times of the people of the village during the decades before, during and after World War Two - a time when the past really was another country.

Our thanks go to the volunteers at Café Jacque and Father Tom for allowing us to join them during the morning and for making everyone feel so welcome.

First Steps Remembers First Steps playgroup, volunteers from the Once, We Were Soldiers charity and Cathie Watkins held a small remembrance event. The OWWS volunteers, Andy Spiers (who founded the charity) and Ian Clayton, both from Barlestone, came to the playgroup and gave a talk about animals that might be involved in war including a story about Camo, the OWWS mascot and a brave search & rescue dog – who then made an appearance! We then went to St Giles Church and made a special First Steps Remembers plaque from poppies decorated by the children before planting small remembrance crosses outside the church porch doors.

Desford’s passage to the county finals was secured by virtue of a 2-0 defeat of Stafford Leys Primary in the final of the borough’s English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) qualifying tournament, organised by Hinckley and Bosworth School Sports Association (HABSSA) and hosted by Desford itself, in October.

Dan Chapman, Sport Coach for the Kirkby Road school, said of the girls’ Danone Cup triumph: “We are really proud of such an amazing achievement! The girls performed brilliantly. Their hard work and commitment to training has paid off!”

Many of the victorious team had previously been part of the Desford squad that secured fifth place in a year 4 and 5 invitational competition, hosted by Dixie Grammar Junior School, earlier in the term.

The school’s various girls’ teams have benefited from a close relationship with Desford FC which has provided coaches for its free, after-school weekly football sessions.

“We are indebted to Desford Football Club” explained Mr Chapman, “not only for its work with the girls but for the provision of football at the school generally. The weekly sessions have proved invaluable and are growing in popularity all the time and we are blessed with the number of girls now wanting to play for the school”.

Their male counterparts, meanwhile, have recorded successes of their own during the current academic year.

The year 4 and 5 boys picked up silverware in their respective invitational tournament at Dixie Grammar last month that saw a number of teams from the borough, as well as from Warwickshire, compete for the title. After dominating the group stages the Desford team saw off a strong Richmond side in the final, once again thanks to penalties after a thrilling goalless draw.

Meanwhile, the year 5 and 6 contingent, faced penalties itself in the knock-out stages of prestigious competitions.

In a 12-team ESFA tournament for Hinckley and Bosworth schools, hosted once again by Desford in partnership with HABSSA, the home side narrowly went out in the semi-final on spot-kicks, beaten by Kirkby Muxloe who then went on to face St Peters in the final. Kirkby Muxloe ran out eventual winners, beating the Market Bosworth side by a single goal.

The Desford team also reached the final of the Bosworth Education Partnership (BEP) tournament at Newbold Verdon where it took the runner-up spot following a penalty shoot-out against eventual champions, Congerstone.

Speaking about Desford’s successes and triumphs on the football field, Mr Chapman said: “It has been a good end to the year. It is great to see so many children wanting to represent the school at competitions. I’m

It is hard to believe that it is a year since we were making plans to take over the running of the Library from the County Council. I am delighted to say that in that time our team of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers has enabled the Library to continue to operate as effectively as ever – if not more so.

We have always managed to open as advertised, and are building for a successful long term future. My fellow Committee members and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way over that period. Next month’s column will include a look back at our first year as a Community Library in more detail.

One of the successes of our first year has been to increase the range of activities held at the Library. We said at the beginning that we wanted to build on the great work of The Friends of Newbold Verdon, and I believe that we have done so. Of course without The Friends and their events, our funds would be considerably smaller!

As an example of one of those new events, I am pleased to report the success of “The Great British Library Afternoon Tea” (with the beverages and edibles provided by Betty Brown’s) held last month. Feedback from those who attended was very complimentary – so much so that we will be holding a Festive version in the Library on Thursday 15th December. Tickets are £10 from the Library and booking in advance is essential.

For Christmas, a small team of our Volunteers are putting together a special display in the Children’s Area – bring your young ones along!

In the background we have also been working on a project to upgrade the computer equipment in the Library, which is currently quite outdated and operates on the Council’s network, which itself is significantly slower than the high speed broadband enjoyed by the rest of the village. Our new equipment has been purchased and is currently being tested, with the aim of going live during January. One of the beneficiaries will be the Newbold Verdon and District History Group whose online searches should be much quicker. More detail should be available in the next update.

Newbold Verdon W.I.

Newbold Verdon W.I.’s November meeting was as usual their AGM. Secretary, Christine Geoghan gave her report of a busy year of village events both in Newbold and Barlestone, theatre trips, quizzes, skittles and darts. The speakers at this year’s monthly meetings has been particularly varied and entertaining, and was much appreciated by members. Treasurer Barbara Hulbert gave the financial report and confirmed finances were sound and the books balanced.

President Carolyn Hutchinson thanked the committee and members for their support during the past busy year, and was reelected President for the coming year.

Hildred Freeman thanked the President, Secretary and Treasurer on behalf of members for their sterling work.

For a more lighthearted end to the evening, members enjoyed a fish and chip supper and a quiz.

The next meeting will be the Christmas meeting to take place on Monday December 12th, 7.30pm at the Methodist Church Hall when the speaker will be Douglas Clinton talking about a Tudor and Stuart Christmas

Birdnotes

An unusual sighting for Leicestershire was a Hooded Crow seen at Swithland Reservoir, feeding in a stubble field by Rabbits Bridge.

Glynn Pester had a Glossy Ibis, Jack Snipe and Little Egret at Cossington meadows.

Several Jays have been seen around Stevenson’s industrial site, an unusual place for Jays. Stuart Farmer watched a Kingfisher on the Ibstock brook; such a small brook but big enough to support Kingfishers. They have been seen and reported from the same brook for years but not for some time. Well done, Stuart.

Angela Thomas, one of our Bird Club members, had 1 adult and 4 Juvenile Hedgehogs in her garden, and although one had died and she had seen one that had survived, she was not sure about the

others.

Rhys Dandy gave a superb talk at our last Bird Club meeting, showing his own photographs of birds and moths he had photographed from his garden moth trap. His knowledge is endless and his talks are extremely interesting, both about birds, some very unusual for our area, and also moths as his secondary subject. Thanks Rhys, the round of applause at the end said it all.

Roger Partridge, one of our regular contributors to Birdnotes, rang to say the Sence Valley Cygnets had wandered into the adjoining fields and had been feeding on the rape growing there.

He also mentioned his holiday in the Algarve, where he saw birds like Ibis and an occasional Parrot.

Paul Burton of Coalville, and Alan Brooks, watched one of our annual winter migrants, Waxwing, at Loughborough.

At Kelham Bridge Reserve, Paul also watched a single Water Rail, and at Tilton-on–Hill (Melton) a fall of 80+ had been seen, and throughout the Country, large flocks have been reported.

Alan and Derek Hart had Kingfisher and numerous species of Duck at Drakelow Derbyshire Trust Reserve. Derek also gets an unusual bird in his garden, a Woodcock. Nice one, Derek. He is also

getting both Green and Greater Spotted Woodpecker along with a flock of up to 30 House Sparrows and a pair of Robins.

David Perrins of Ellistown, who has a window feeder, watched a Wren and several Goldfinches arguing who would get there first. He also has a Magpie that sits on his windowsill waiting to be fed.

Lots of our Winter Thrushes, Redwing and Fieldfare have been reported from various areas. They love to feed on Rowan and Cotoneaster bushes in gardens and will strip a bush or tree in a few days. So let’s hope there are enough berries to go around. Our resident Blackbirds and Thrushes also rely on them.

One of this year’s satellite tagged young Hen Harriers hatched at Langholm in the Scottish Borders was found dead in Cumbria. It would suggest from the press statement it was again criminal activity.

Red Kite persecution in Scotland is at a level of 25 years ago.

One of the Slimbridge Common Cranes was found shot dead on the Somerset levels.

At Willington Reserve, Long Eaton, a single Bittern, 3 Curlew, 3 Hooper Swans, a Caspian Gull, single Goldeneye Duck, Snipe, and Kingfisher showed very well.

Shrike showed very well, and at Stanford reservoir a single Ring tailed Hen Harrier turned up.

Locally, at Longmoor Reserve, a superb Short-Eared Owl displayed well for several days. It seems to get be a good area for this species with lots of open ground for them to use.

Tony Lee of Ibstock rang to say lots of Jackdaws are flying around High Street calling and carrying nesting material in the last few days. High Street is a good spot for Jackdaws that seem to use the chimneys to nest in with great success every year.

Barlestone Remembers

Left to right against the Barlestone Wheel... Rev John Downs (vicar of Barlestone St Giles); Kenny Haywood (Divisional President of the St Johns Ambulance Brigade), Ricky Layer (serving member of the Royal Engineers, 23rd Parachute Engineer Regiment), Cathie Watkins (resident of Barlestone who, supported by her husband John, decorated the wheel for Remembrance with the names of all the battles which took place in 1916), Andy Spiers (Founder of the Once, We Were Soldiers charity and veteran of both the Royal Hussars and the Scottish Dragoon Guards) and Chris Wilcox (veteran of the Royal Marines).

The A.G.M. started our November meeting and after the business, yearly report and giving of flowers to our retiring President, Mary Matts gave us a talk on canals.

The first canals were built by businessmen, with the Duke of Bridgewater first to transport coal to Manchester.

The canals were dug by hand and sealed with clay to keep them water tight. Later in the early 19th century, railways became competition for the canals and slowly they lost favour to make a come back in the 20th century.

Mary showed us the barge-ware families painted, along with home made bonnets and clothing the families wore. A very interesting meeting, enjoyed by all the members.

The next meeting is on 13th December, when we shall have a social and bring and share supper for Christmas. 7.30pm at The Old School Room, Kirkby Mallory.

Examination Invigilator Vacancies The Market Bosworth School We are looking to appoint people with an educational background or an interest in education, to act as examination invigilators in our school. We are aiming to build a regular team; the initial requirement is for the summer exam period (15th May until the 21st of June 2017). Applications are welcome from people with experience, but training will be provided.

Working hours will be variable depending on examination requirements, but will normally be 8.00am for morning exams and 1.00pm for afternoon exams. An enhanced CRB check will be required.
