Phenomenal GCSE Success at Bosworth Academy Bosworth Academy students and staff are celebrating our best ever GCSE outcomes.

Results are the highest the academy has ever seen across the board. Maths, English, Sciences, Humanities, Computing and Arts subjects are all considerably up on last year’s already strong scores.

The family will continue the celebration of success with a meal out at their favorite restaurant.

Market Bosworth Rotary Club What do we do? Do we only raise money for charity?

Well, first of all we have fun. Three Thursdays in each month we meet at the Royal Arms at Sutton Cheney where we have a talk given by or arranged by a member. These talks are entertaining and enjoyed by members.

This is followed by an excellent lunch. The meeting concludes with Rotary business as you will see below.

The fourth Tuesday we have an evening meeting to which guests are invited.

To enable us to raise money for charity, the business part of the meeting has to deal with collections at supermarkets and garden centres.

These usually bring in ÂŁ200 to ÂŁ300. Then

there is the Santa Sleigh which tours the local villages.

This is always welcomed by the young people and parents alike and brings in very welcome additions to our charity funds. Watch for more details of the visit to your area.

Another fundraiser for the last four years has been the Santa Fun Run in Bosworth Park. What a sight with several dozen Santas in full suits (provided) starting off for a 5 or 10k run or walk. The 2016 date is 4th December.

What else? We play our part in caring for the baskets and troughs for Bosworth in Bloom by watering on Thursdays and Saturdays. A member noticed that the road signs were becoming so dirty and green that they were unreadable, so a group was organised to clean the signs before the Bosworth in Bloom judging.

As with all organisations, members go for various reasons. It is sad to note the death of Jack Friday of Twycross. An honorary Rotary member for many years.

A Tribute to Katie Ruth & the trustees of Aim for Change would like to pay tribute to Katie Owen who sadly passed away aged just 49 years.

To say Katie oozed goodness is an understatement, she literally sparkled, you only had to meet her to love her. It is difficult to imagine life without Katie but those who knew her, will know she would

not want life to stop, she would want her family and friends to brush themselves down and live their lives to the full. The imprint of her life and the wonderful memories she created will be forever engraved on the souls of all who were fortunate to know her.

Throughout her illness, Katie remained her selfless self, thinking only of others and to that end one part of Katie’s legacy will be the role she played in Aim for Change. Katie was one of the founding trustees of Aim for Change in 2003 and her dedication to the work of the charity never wavered. Katie took enormous pride in the charity and all it has achieved. Katie like Ruth, had a genuine desire to make a difference to the lives of those who are suffering in the world. There is no doubt through the work of the charity she achieved this, making tangible differences to hundreds, if not thousands of lives. Aim for Change has lost one of its shining lights and we will miss her terribly.

Katie assisted Ruth in many charity fund raisers over the years (before Aim for Change and after, during her time

as a trustee) including several fantastic charity balls. We can all testify that with her wicked sense of humour, Katie was always a pleasure to work alongside.

Laughter was never far away when Katie was around.

In her memory of Katie, her husband Phil and loving family requested donations to be made to Aim for Change and Cancer Research. As testament to her memory Aim for Change has been given the sum of £1368. We would like to thank everyone for their donations which will be used to complete the village school project in Musaba, a project which commenced with monies donated following the loss of Katie’s dad George in 2010.

Dixie Grammar School GCSE Results 2016 With well over a quarter of all GCSE grades at A*, the GCSE students at the Dixie Grammar School have been richly rewarded for their hard work and consistent application and they have laid the firmest of foundations for the next two years of study; the staff here are very proud of their achievements.

Among those scoring a clean sweep of A* and A grades were George Bacon and Hannah Mihsein each with 9 A* and 1 A grade, Lauren Nicholls with 8 A* and 1 A grade and Charlotte Bowman with 2 A* and 7 A grades, Deserving of a special mention is Amy Hemsworth who has added to her A level English Language grade A last week with a perfect 10 A* grades out of 10 at GCSE. Dixie Grammar School A Level Results 2016 This has been a fantastic year for the Dixie and our A level students are celebrating another set of most impressive exam results. A recordbreaking 34% of the A Levels awarded to our students are at the coveted A* and A grades and the young men and women leaving the Dixie do so assured of a very bright future ahead.

There is not space to list all the details of those who secured straight A and A* grades, but special mention should be made of Edward Platts, who will now read Chinese at The Queen’s College, Oxford; Richard Wilkinson with two A* and two A grades, who will be reading Law at Birmingham; and Adam McGrath, this year’s Head Boy, with two A* grades and one A grade, who now heads to Imperial College to read Chemistry. Nikita Sall, Jimmy Webster and Liban Warsame also achieved a clean sweep of top grades. Mention should additionally be made of Amy Hemsworth who, at the age of 15, has received grade A in her English Language A level.

These results reflect a great deal of hard work by both our talented young adults and our dedicated teachers. However, it is not always the highest grades that represent the greatest achievement and we are proud of the

Since our last progress update, the design brief for Station Field (the working name for the land to the rear of Heath Rd/Station Rd) has now been completed and published.

The purpose of the design brief is to guide planners and developers through planning policy and best practice design principles so that proposals comply with the Neighbourhood Plan. In this way, the design brief aims to ensure that developers produce designs which reflect the concerns and aspirations of the local community.

The brief brings together existing considerations and principles and moves forward by looking more closely at issues such as layout, landscaping, parking, footpaths, appearance, sustainability and workmanship.

The design brief was reviewed and approved by Market Bosworth Parish Council and copies are now available to view at Market Bosworth Parish Council Office and at Market Bosworth Library.

As I write this the rain is gently watering the gardens of Bosworth; I consider that we were very lucky in choosing yesterday for our visit to Calke Abbey. It was a beautiful day and a thoroughly enjoyable visit by the MBS members who attended.

Calke Abbey as we see it now dates from around 1704 but there has been habitation on the site for a much longer period. The house is a treasure chest of antiquity and on entering the house our briefing referred to the fact that only about half of the items discovered were on view. Put simply there was no room to display more items.

I do not intend to dwell too much on the actual visit, but will say that the National Trust, in deciding to preserve rather than to renovate have made the exactly correct decision. By preserving we were able to see how the house was actually constructed (larch lap ceilings) and how well, despite some obvious neglect, the wooded doors had remained true as indeed had much of the woodwork.

It was impossible to see it all in one afternoon, it really needs a full day if not more, but for me, it was

a delightful experience. I would like to thank those members who came for their companionship as we travelled through history together, pausing at the windows to look out at the beautiful countryside and the equally beautiful cattle (Longhorns, I think unless anyone wishes to correct me).

Musical Village, the Leicester family of adult and children’s community choirs, has received exceptional reviews from audiences and fellow professionals for their singing with Russell Watson. Russell, the UK’s best selling classical artist, is touring the country with his ‘Songs from the Heart’ concert. He invited Musical Village to accompany him on classic

favourites such as ‘Nessun Dorma’, ‘Barcelona’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

Twycross House School GCSE Results 2016

100% with 5 or more A*- C grades % of A* grades: 18% % of A*/A grades: 55% % of A*/A/B grades: 88% All of the Year 11 students at Twycross House School are to be congratulated for passing their GCSEs with 7 or more A* - C grades each. Of these grades 18% were at A* and 55% at A*/A. In fact, no less than 88% of all the grades were A*/A/B and 22% of all students

Carlton Gets a New Marquee for Village Events The friends of St Andrew’s Church committee and the PCC are delighted that they have been awarded a grant from the Hinckley & Bosworth Parish and Community Initiative Fund to help towards the cost to a new marquee to be used for community activities.

Carlton does not have a village hall, and although the church is used for meetings and coffee mornings, a marquee where larger activities could take place is ideal.

Raising money for charity is important to the villagers. In recent years, very successful afternoon cream teas and concerts have been held to raise money for LOROS and the Community First Responders.

Funds are also needed to pay church costs and to keep it in good repair. Book fairs have been held to raise money for the church and the Parish Amenities Fund. The annual summer fete, the biggest and most important fundraiser each year, is always very popular and attracts many visitors from nearby towns and villages.

The marquee was used for the first time at this year’s fete on August 27th. It was opened by local borough councilor Maureen Cook, a regular to our village events.

Our sincere thanks go to the committee of the Parish and Community Initiative Fund for supporting our bid and also to the Hinckley and bosworth Borough Council for making such funds available.

Market Bosworth Community Library On Monday 15th August, Steve Kelly received the keys to Market Bosworth Library from Tracey Beighton representing the Leicestershire County Council and Market Bosworth Community Library opened to the public for the first time. Market Bosworth was one of the rural libraries identified by the County Council as part of its community partnership library service review for transfer to the community or closure. In October 2014, Steve called the first public meeting to gather support to save his local library. Having accepted the post of Chairperson of the Steering Group and then becoming Chair of the new charity MBCL in February 2016, Steve promised to serve in that post until the County Council actually transferred the library into community ownership. Having now achieved his goal, Steve has decided to step down as Chairperson but will remain as a trustee.

The library and information service will be open on the same days and at the same times.The full range of library services previously provided will be available.

The trustees of the new charity MBCL look forward to further developing the library as a community resource and are grateful for all the local support which will continue to ensure the future of this most valuable asset.

Birdnotes Our bird life is in a very critical declining situation, especially our migrant birds.

Turtledoves have suffered a 91% decline across Europe since 1980; mainly due to shooting in the Mediterranean Islands, especially Malta who are still doing so, despite a EU spring hunting directive banning it.

Our nightingales are also down 91%. Dr Chris Hewson of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) states, “for every 10 nightingales which were singing in Britain when I was born 40 years ago, only one is doing so now, the rest of them have vanished, that’s the scale of what we are talking about. Pretty sobering isn’t it”. I have some very good recordings of nightingales that I personally made many years ago at various location, but never in Leicestershire. A venue that was always guaranteed to be superb was Paxton Pits in Huntingdon. Up to

12-15 pairs always bred there and to hear so many was simply breathtaking.

They seemed to compete with each other. I believe that odd ones still breed there and if you have never listened or heard nightingales then it is certainly worth a visit. RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk was another very good place to hear them and again I have some excellent recordings from there. In my opinion, there is no other bird that sings so beautifully and so powerful. I often play these recordings and never tire of hearing them. If we lose this special bird in Britain it will be devastating.

Jamie Smith of Ibstock called to see me and showed me a photograph of a very large bird sitting on a roof taken at Newton Burgoland of what Jamie thought was an Eagle Owl. In my opinion it certainly was an Eagle Owl. Eagle Owls are the world’s largest owl and have bred for a number of years in England, mainly North Yorkshire moors and the Forest of Bowland Lancs. The North Yorkshire birds successfully raised a total of 23 young between 1997 and 2005 but have had little success since, although eggs and nests have been found abandoned with no apparent reason other than disturbance? Margaret Dover of Kirby Mallory had a Ringed Necked Parakeet in her garden constantly for 3 weeks

eating all her cherries. Natural England has issued a licence for someone to kill up to 10 Buzzards (to prevent serious damage to young Pheasants).

Pheasants are not a native species to the UK, and are bred solely for sport.

According to 2011 figures over 50 million non-native species of game birds (pheasant and red-legged-partridge) are released into the countryside solely for shooting purposes. Buzzards are a native protected species and are still recovering (in some areas) from decades of illegal persecution. I am sure Buzzards eat far more small prey (rabbit etc) than they do Pheasants.

Our ecology system is already in fine balance and we do not need to upset this further. A satellite tagged Hen Harrier has gone missing in Scotland, presumed shot over Grouse moors.

Again a species we again can ill afford to lose. By the end of this month the majority of our migrant birds will have

left us. I have not seen a Swift in the last few days, so I am assuming they have already departed for warmer climes. Also Swallows and Martins both House and Sand will have left when you read these notes. Apparently one of our migrant warblers, Blackcap Warblers are wintering in Britain in numbers, and have been doing so for several years with no ill affects.

Lots of white butterflies have been around our garden, sometimes in small groups, but I am not sure if they are Small White or the troublesome Cabbage White, being too quick for me to focus on. Red Kites are a bird that seems to have made a superb recovery in Leicestershire with birds being report from around the county on a regular basis, also Ravens seem to be doing well in the county with birds being reported regularly. Local news is a little sparse this month probably due to people spending time watching the Olympic Games and not getting outdoors.

Joy Hirons England International Does it Again!

England International skeet shooter, Joy Hirons from Stoke Golding, has equalled the history books by winning the British Open title for a fourth consecutive year.

Joy competed in the British Open skeet championship held over the weekend at Doveridge in Derbyshire and shot an amazing 99 out of 100 to win the Ladies title outright for an incredible fourth year running.

According to the history books, this has only ever been done before and that was 44 years ago so it has made this win even more special as she continues to dominate at a sport she only took up competitively 7 years ago.

The new custom made Beretta 12 bore shotgun which she had made specially at the factory in Italy has proven its worth and has made a huge difference to her performance.

Joy will be travelling to Dundee in Scotland next week as part of the England shooting team to very proudly shoot for her country at the Home International.
