Pupils at a Nailstone primary school are set to showcase a modern reworking of the classic Cinderella story for their Christmas production this year.

Dove Bank Primary School is staging Cinderalla and Rockerfella - a modern, panto-style reworking of the classic tale featuring all the best-loved characters including downtrodden Cinderella, Rockerfella (formerly known as Prince Charming), Buttons, the Ugly Sisters and the Fairy Godmother, together with a selection of additional characters, from music managers and paparazzi to good and bad fairies - all placed in a world of fame and celebrity.

The children have been practicing for weeks on the production which offers fresh and relevant things to say about fame, fortune and how true love will win in the end. But there’s also a nod to tradition because the script is comical, contains some great songs and has plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved with audience participation.

Headteacher, Fiona Shields said that the audience is in for a treat – especially as the school has a growing reputation for setting the bar high after last year’s production of Robin Hood and Scrooge the year before that.

“Cinderella and Rockerfella gives the school the opportunity to show off the wealth of talent we have at Dove Bank and the children have risen to the challenge again this year,” she said.

“The children have loved rehearsing and really got into the swing of things so I know that everyone who comes to see the show will love it.”

Flights of Fancy, Trees and Nursery Rhymes!

Our November meeting was an evening of an eclectic mix of speeches full of Father Christmas will be visiting on the interest, enjoyment and fun. Penny Wright’s description of a long held ambition following evenings:to paraglide left one with the feeling of being lifted by the thermals and basking in absolute peace.

Monday 5th December from 5.30pm We were taken through a Sequoia forest in America by Sue Coleman. This speech Nailstone was well scripted and full of researched fact. Sue’s enthusiasm and love of trees Tuesday 6th December from 5.30pm was passionately delivered to her audience.

Market Bosworth and Carlton Mark Glover delivered a speech in his inimitable style which started with him rapidly Wednesday 7th December from 5.30pm reciting the vowels sounds. We wondered what was coming and all was soon Newbold Verdon revealed! An entertaining account of the evolution of the human voice!

Thursday 8th December from 5.30pm Nursery Rhymes were the theme for our Topics session organised by John Barron.

Desford On a folded piece of paper, handed to those who were to speak, was a nursery Friday 9th December from 5.30pm rhyme. The object of the theme was to present the nursery rhyme as a news report.

Market Bosworth Town Tour The originality of some presentations caused much mirth. We had Jack and Jill Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December climbing Mount Everest for fresh water, a very moving appeal for missing sheep 11.30am to 4.30pm Woodlands was made by our President Anne French.

Sports Person of the Year Award for Joy Hirons England International skeet shooter, Joy Hirons from Stoke Golding has been announced as the Hinckley and Bosworth Sport and Health Alliance Sportsperson of the Year at the awards evening held at Bosworth Academy in Desford.

Joy was shortlisted along with 3 other finalists, 2 golfers and a cricketer, and she was announced as the winner, of which she is extremely proud.

This is a fantastic end to a hugely successful season for Joy, and she will continue to train and keep working hard throughout the winter.

Born, bred and still living in Leicestershire, Bel Grierson’s interest for plants started when gardening with her grandfather on the family owned small holding. Her first award for growing plants was her gardening Brownie badge! She always knew she wanted to work with plants, but was persuaded to study marine environmental management at university before following her passion and getting a job at a local nursery. Since then she has trained as a garden designer and now combines design with managing the retail business of ‘Oasis’, part of Miles Wholesaler Nursery in Hoby. She also lectures at Nottingham Trent University as a ‘live practitioner’ on their garden design course.

Guide Dogs for the Blind and Mary Ann Evans Hospice Benefit from Market Bosworth Agricultural, Horticultural and Equestrian Society Events Market Bosworth Agricultural, Horticultural and Equestrian Society presented cheques to the Guide Dogs for the Blind who were the beneficiary organisation of the 2015 Show and the Mary Ann Evans Hospice who received the monies raised at the Beagle Racing Evening held prior to the Show.

Representatives from both organisations attended the AGM on 16 November.

Java the guide dog and her handler, were present with Mike Goodall, Treasurer of Leicestershire & Rutland Fundraising Group to receive ÂŁ1,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Jacqueline Leake attending for the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, collected a cheque for ÂŁ1,300. The Hospice will be the Show Charity for the 2017 Show which will be held on Sunday 2 July.

First World War Casualties in Leicestershire Hospitals provided our entertainment for our lecture meeting on the 17th November with the fascinating story of The Base Hospital, set up - with several other hospitals - during the First World War to treat wounded and sick soldiers. Robin Jenkins Senior Archivist for Leicestershire shared the story with us. We enjoyed many photographs and actual personal reports written at that time.

Two things struck me and will stay with me. Firstly the enormous acceleration of resources needed to treat our soldiers and some soldiers from other countries, even Austrians and Germans were treated there. For example, in 1914 there was one hospital ship and three cross channel ferries in use. By 1916 there were one hundred hospital ships transporting 130,000 officers and over two million men.

The Base Hospital itself was extended numerous times (tripling in size) and surprisingly the open fronted ward (facing south) was very popular. It had canvas blinds to keep out the worst of the weather. Contrast this with hospitals today where often the heat is stifling.

The other factor was the kindness and generosity of the people of Leicestershire. When the first train arrived carrying the wounded it was not only met by stretcher bearers and ambulances but also 38 private cars to ferry the wounded to hospital. The newspaper report included the fact that all of the cars were owner-drivers including a lady driver. This continued throughout the war with each train being met by private drivers freely giving their time to help the soldiers.

The wounded troop trains were met with many people who showered the soldiers with cigarettes, tobacco, chocolate and other gifts.

The locals were so generous that it had to be decided to receive the trains after midnight to reduce the volume of the crowds, as they were unwittingly causing delays. The hospital also asked for local visitors to boost the morale of the patients and were overwhelmed by the response, to the extent that they had to police the numbers of visitors to prevent overcrowding. Again the level of visitors remained consistent throughout the war with a visit to the hospital becoming a regular item on a family’s itinerary. Add to that gifts of billiard tables and a myriad of other life enhancing items and I saw a picture that out of violence and war such humanity could also be found in quantity. For me, the lecture was both interesting from a factual point of view but also very moving. An excellent follow up to the crowds seen in the Square for Remembrance Sunday.

I hope I have done justice to Robin who delivered the lecture in a clear, professional and humorous way. As usual the end of the lecture was marked by loud and long applause.

We do not have a lecture meeting in December, I hope you were able to call in at The Forge and sample some Mulled Wine and a Mince Pie in celebration of the Christmas lights switch on.

Our next society lecture meeting will be in 2017 on 19th January with Derek Jarrom treating us to his lecture “Dam and Blast”. This will be in the Free Church (which does look very smart following the re-decorating), Barton Road, commencing at 7.30pm. All welcome, subject to seating availability, non-members will be asked to pay the usual nominal £3.00.

Marion has asked me to remind you of the Dixie Grammar School Community Lecture on Wednesday 7th December. Entitled Forensic Linguistics; Analysing Language in Criminal Investigations. The lecture is given by Tim Grant, Professor of Forensic Linguistics at Aston University. The lecture commences at 4.30pm and is expected to last for one hour. It sounds to me to be a very interesting subject, someone jokingly (at least I thought they were joking) said they would attend as it would help them to understand my magazine articles!

Pupils ‘Grow Together’ scheme harvests bumper crop

Green-fingered pupils at a Nailstone primary school have reaped the rewards of what they sewed for a special Harvest festival event.

This year Dove Bank Primary School launched it’s ‘Grow Together’ scheme where pupils from the School’s Gardening Club and School Council along with help and support from local parents and businesses launched the scheme to transform a plot of land at the school into a new garden where they planted an array of vegetables, fruit and flowers. As part of the Harvest festival celebrations, the children did a range of activities centred around the produce they have been growing throughout the year Children in Key Stage one used a range of Autumnal ingredients to cook and then taste flapjack, bread, pear muffins and soup. They also made Vegetepals out of a range of fruit and vegetables.

Older children created a walled garden out of plastic bottles, made Pot Men and painted the boat, which will be filled with plants.

“Our children have had an amazing experience and the children are learning how to take care of their fledgling plants and to either sell produce at various opportunities or to use the harvested fruit and vegetables to make jams, pies and soups with, thereby helping them to understand the importance of a healthy diet,” said Mrs Shields “We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of our parents particularly Richard and Emma Smith - who have worked so hard in bringing the ‘Grow Together’ initiative to life. It has been a fundamental part of bring making the school curriculum such an exciting learning experience for the children.”

Still Aiming For Change Aim for Change is a locally based charity that began life thirteen years ago by raising funds to provide cows for Kokoa, a small village in Uganda. Since then the range of activities has greatly increased focusing on education, healthcare and self-sufficiency. The charity supports families, widows, orphans and street children who live in poverty and dire need in both Uganda and Pakistan.

Christmas is a time when many of us tend to spend a lot of money but it is also a time when we think of helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Aim for Change tries to encourage as many as possible to ‘Spare-a-Meal’. This simply involves donating the cost of a family meal to help the charity buy food and treats to make Christmas special for the Musaba School and village, the Amazing Grace School and Orphanage as well as refugees, orphans and street children in Uganda.

In Pakistan the funds will be used at the charity’s orphanage and school, Hope of Life Foundation, and for the children who attend a small school in Shopper City refugee camp, funded by the charity.

The need for food and education continues throughout the year of course and a regular donation to help fund the work of the charity would be fantastic. This will provide a regular income to support children through their school lives and may even help towards training the youngsters for different skills when they leave school.

Twycross House Presentation Evening At our annual A level and GCSE presentation evening we welcomed back ex pupil Natasha Banks. Natasha left Twycross House in 2006 with A-levels in English Literature, German and Biology and an AS-level in History.

She went on to study English Literature with Drama at Loughborough University and it was here that she discovered her passion for directing and producing films. Using the practical skills she gained at Loughborough, she was accepted on an internship at the BBC and worked on one of Britain’s most successful shows, Top Gear. This was the beginning of Natasha’s television career and she hasn’t looked back since. Pictured here are; Head of English Mrs Lynne Murfin with Now a producer, Natasha filmed ITV’s Ninja Warrior UK earlier Natasha Banks this year and most recently a female empowerment series for AOL. This involved interviewing successful and inspiring British women including Emma Watson, Helen Mirren and CoppaFeel! charity founder, Kris Hallenga. This November she’s producing The National Television Awards with Dermot O’Leary for the third year running.

Natasha praised the students’ excellent results. In 2016, 27% achieved A* in their A level examinations, 68% achieved A*/A grades, 79% achieved A*,A or B grades. Eleven students achieved all A*/A grades.

Birdnotes An unusual sighting for Leicestershire was a Hooded Crow seen at Swithland Reservoir, feeding in a stubble field by Rabbits Bridge.

Glynn Pester had a Glossy Ibis, Jack Snipe and Little Egret at Cossington meadows.

Several Jays have been seen around Stevenson’s industrial site, an unusual place for Jays. Stuart Farmer watched a Kingfisher on the Ibstock brook; such a small brook but big enough to support Kingfishers. They have been seen and reported from the same brook for years but not for some time. Well done, Stuart.

members, had 1 adult and 4 Juvenile Hedgehogs in her garden, and although one had died and she had seen one that had survived, she was not sure about the others.

Rhys Dandy gave a superb talk at our last Bird Club meeting, showing his own photographs of birds and moths he had photographed from his garden moth trap. His knowledge is endless and his talks are extremely interesting, both about birds, some very unusual for our area, and also moths as his secondary subject. Thanks Rhys, the round of applause at the end said it all.

Roger Partridge, one of our regular contributors to Birdnotes, rang to say the Sence Valley Cygnets had wandered into the adjoining fields and had been feeding on the rape growing there.

He also mentioned his holiday in the Algarve, where he saw birds like Ibis and an occasional Parrot.

Paul Burton of Coalville, and Alan Brooks, watched one of our annual winter migrants, Waxwing, at Loughborough.

At Kelham Bridge Reserve, Paul also watched a single Water Rail, and at

Tilton-on–Hill (Melton) a fall of 80+ had been seen, and throughout the Country, large flocks have been reported.

Alan and Derek Hart had Kingfisher and numerous species of Duck at Drakelow Derbyshire Trust Reserve. Derek also gets an unusual bird in his garden, a Woodcock. Nice one, Derek. He is also getting both Green and Greater Spotted Woodpecker along with a flock of up to 30 House Sparrows and a pair of Robins.

David Perrins of Ellistown, who has a window feeder, watched a Wren and several Goldfinches arguing who would get there first. He also has a Magpie that sits on his windowsill waiting to be fed.

Lots of our Winter Thrushes, Redwing and Fieldfare have been reported from various areas. They love to feed on Rowan and Cotoneaster bushes in gardens and will strip a bush or tree in a few days. So let’s hope there are enough berries to go around. Our resident Blackbirds and Thrushes also rely on them.

Red Kite persecution in Scotland is at a level of 25 years ago.

One of the Slimbridge Common Cranes was found shot dead on the Somerset levels.

At Willington Reserve, Long Eaton, a single Bittern, 3 Curlew, 3 Hooper Swans, a Caspian Gull, single Goldeneye Duck, Snipe, and Kingfisher showed very well.

At Oakham, Rutland, a Great Grey Shrike showed very well, and at Stanford reservoir a single Ring tailed Hen Harrier turned up.

Locally, at Longmoor Reserve, a superb Short-Eared Owl displayed well for several days. It seems to get be a good area for this species with lots of open ground for them to use.

Tony Lee of Ibstock rang to say lots of Jackdaws are flying around High Street calling and carrying nesting material in the last few days. High Street is a good spot for Jackdaws that seem to use the chimneys to nest in with great success every year.

Billy Mitchell has done it all as a performer and songwriter. He spent eight years as front man of the legendary Lindisfarne and his influence on the line-up of the band helped them stay as respected and successful as they had been prior to his recruitment. In the seventies he founded the seminal Jack The Lad. He has acted and sung all around the world but it wasn’t until 2005 that he finally got around to releasing his first solo album, ‘The Devil’s Ground’. In his enthusiastic review of the album, Pete Fyffe of Folking. Billy and Bob first toured together as com, described Billy as “one of the finest long ago as 2006, producing the highly singers on the planet”. Billy has recently acclaimed ‘live’ album ‘Five-star B&B’.

Examination Invigilator Vacancies The Market Bosworth School We are looking to appoint people with an educational background or an interest in education, to act as examination invigilators in our school. We are aiming to build a regular team; the initial requirement is for the summer exam period (15th May until the 21st of June 2017). Applications are welcome from people with experience, but training will be provided.

Working hours will be variable depending on examination requirements, but will normally be 8.00am for morning exams and 1.00pm for afternoon exams. An enhanced CRB check will be required.

Team Congerstone It’s been another busy month for Sports at Congerstone Primary School.

Unity Football Matches Our Year 3/ 4 and Year 5/6 Unity Football Teams played again this month against Dovebank Primary School. All the boys played extremely well and both teams won their matches. The teams will now enjoy a long winter break and will play their remaining matches against Viscount Beaumont and Woodstone in the New Year.

Year 5/6 Girls Cross Country Team

Cross Country at Packington Another great turnout from our children at the Packington Cross Country event on Saturday 29th October. Everyone ran really well, especially Ewan who won the Foundation Boys Race and Harry who won the Year 5/6 Boys Race. The next event is the Turkey Trot at Viscount Beaumont on Saturday 3rd December, remember your Santa hats and antlers.

Beaumanor Hall Residential Our Year 2 & 3’s spent a wonderful 2 nights and 3 days at Beaumanor Hall.

Everyone had a fabulous time. They took part in Robin Hood Survival Skills, Bridge Building, Pirate Games and played Hide and Seek in the cellars on Halloween.

Children in Need - The Big Spotacular

Our children and staff really got creative when we asked them to come to school as spotty and dotty as BEP Quicksticks Festival possible! We raised Years 4,5 & 6 attended the Quicksticks an amazing £427.43 Festival and they all played a lot of really for Children in Need. good hockey, showing great skill at passing, attacking and defending – Well done everyone!!
