Vintage Transport Event at The Battlefield Line Railway On Sunday 8th May, the Battlefield Line Railway in Leicestershire will be hosting a Vintage Transport Event at Market Bosworth Railway Station. The day will feature a full range of Vintage, Classic and Sports Cars, Modern Day Race Cars, Vintage Buses and a special display courtesy of the Midland Volunteer Fire Service of their rescue equipment providing road traffic demonstrations and re-enactments.

The first train of the day will depart from Shackerstone at 11.15am, with a further four departures at 12.30pm, 1.45pm, 3.00pm and 4.15pm. All of these trains will call at Market Bosworth with free entry to the Vintage Transport Event. For those who wish to visit the event without travelling on the train, the entry price is Adults £4 and Under 15’s £2.

Whilst visiting the Battlefield Line you may wish to visit our famous Railway Museum at Shackerstone Station, which is host to so many railway artefacts gathered over many years. The Station also houses a tea room which also serves snacks, a shop and a fund stall.

Alternatively, you may wish to travel to the far end of the railway line with a visit to Shenton Station. Here you can visit Richard Golding’s Glassmaking studio, the Station Pottery, or walk a short distance to the Battle of Bosworth Visitors Centre to learn of the battle where Richard III was killed in 1485. The Station also houses a small team room serving refreshments and snacks, together with a selection of gifts.

A Classic Trip

Students studying Classics at Twycross House School spent an action-packed visit to Athens at the start of the Easter holidays.

On the first day, after scaling Lykavittos hill in record time, we hit the Athenian food scene hard. Initial cloudbursts gave way to glorious spring sunshine during the next few days, when we covered many of the main Athenian sites. The group soon found their feet and were quick to scope out the best ice cream stops (pomegranate ice cream proved a particular hit), the best spots for ironic hats, and the way to the fish foot spa.

During our trip to Delphi, we caught sight of the Red Arrows (training in Greece), looping the loop in front of the bus; and we even glimpsed a hawk carrying a snake in its talons.

The staff were particularly impressed by the group’s appetite.

Ice cream, loukoumades (small fried honey-soaked donuts dusted in cinnamon) and morning snacks (half an hour after breakfast) of waffles were daily occurrences. One group even boldly sampled octopus. It’s just as well the group had such rich food to feast on, because those monuments don’t visit themselves. Everyone, at some point, experienced ‘museum legs’ (an ancient affliction), but aching limbs are part and parcel of visiting the impressive Acropolis Museum, and we were rewarded by getting to see Athens’ best structure yet: a Lego Parthenon.

Four days of walking the byways of Athens meant that everyone returned home fighting fit, well-rested, with both vitamin D and enthusiasm topped up ready for the summer term. Some of the students claimed that they had never slept more deeply. It was a joy to take such an inquisitive and eager group of students, and we hope that this has helped to set in context the language and culture of Ancient Greece.

Market Bosworth Junior Rugby Festival Market Bosworth Rugby Club welcomed girls and boys aged between 6 and 13 from across Leicestershire on Sunday 10th April when it held its inaugural rugby festival as part of the clubs 50th anniversary celebrations.

Officially titled the ‘MBRFC John Ward Memorial Festival’ in memory of the club’s late president who passed away unexpectedly in February; the festival allowed players and visitors alike to experience the fun and excitement of rugby football. On naming the festival, Chris Brockhurst, Chair of the organising committee, said, “Grass roots rugby, particularly with young people, was very important to our late president John Ward. With his recent unexpected passing we felt it was fitting to name the festival in his honour to commemorate all that he did for the club and show that his ambitions and hopes for MBRFC live on”.

Visiting teams from Hinckley, Blaby, Loughborough, Oakham, Stoneygate and Market Harborough lined up across 19 pitches and took part in nearly 90 separate games of rugby over the course of 4 hours. With hundreds of family, friends and fans giving support, the atmosphere on the day was fuelled with excitement (and hotdogs).

Commenting on the festival, Felix Roberts aged 8 said, “I love coming to play at Bosworth every week and the festival has been fantastic. We’ve played loads of matches and then got to have a hotdog.”

Market Bosworth Rugby Club prides itself on offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for new players and their families and holds training sessions every Sunday morning between 10am and 12noon from September to April for children aged 5 to 16. Mini and junior rugby provides young players with a safe and fun opportunity to participate in team sport bringing together friendship, discipline and exercise.

April Monthly Meeting Our April speaker took us on a journey, accompanied mainly by seals, penguins, and a wide variety of birds, that started at the Southernmost tip of Argentina, and went south! Wildlife professional photographer Simon Coates from Rugby was our guest, and delighted his audience with snippets from his travels accompanied by both stills and video footage of his journey aboard the Russian Survey ship the Akademik Sergey Vavilov (we also discovered that a “survey” ship was, in reality, the term used to describe a former Cold War spy ship!). Simon explained the importance of the albatross and told us about the RSPB appeal “Save the Albatross” which features some of Simon’s donated photographs.

Simon talked about the locations where shots were taken as well as the techniques used to get the best pictures.

Market Bosworth Library Update Dismayed by delay

Leicestershire County Council (LCC) have delayed their agreed transfer to Market Bosworth Community Library (MBCL) which was due to happen on Monday, 18th April 2016. Since LCC has produced no lease to sign, MBCL will not be able to open its doors. The library will continue to be run by LCC, until LCC can produce the necessary legal documents for MBCL to sign and a new transfer date is agreed.

This is a huge disappointment to many members of the community in Market Bosworth. Nearly 50 volunteers have given their time and energy freely over the last eighteen months to prepare for the handover. Rotas for the first three weeks had already been drawn up and our two week volunteer training period had just been completed by LCC. The trustees who form the management group of MBCL have spent many hours completing the paperwork required by

LCC, holding meetings and making arrangements for the transfer. We were dismayed that our long standing librarian was going to be made redundant, but we were ready for action!

On 14th April 2016, MBCL trustees met with representatives from LCC. Nigel Thomas and Paul Love from LCC gave their reasons for the delay. The library premises share certain services with The Market Bosworth School (TMBS). They told us that, at a meeting between TMBS and LCC on 12thApril, a discussion had taken place about the complete separation of all services, including electricity, water, heating and fire alarms.

The school has agreed to this and also want access arrangements to be separated which could involve planning permission for a new path. To further safeguard their students, the school will be making its premises completely secure by erecting new fencing. Until LCC and TMBS have an agreement in place, LCC will not proceed with the handover to a community managed library.

Members of MBCL do not want any

further delays. We are aware of the momentum that has been growing and the enthusiasm of our volunteers. We have been assured by LCC that once TMBS agrees, LCC will proceed to facilitate our handover. We will not have to wait until works have been completed

by LCC. Refresher training will be arranged for library volunteers and the tapering of our funding arrangements from LCC will be reviewed.

The message from MBCL trustees to our volunteers is firstly, a big thank you for all your time, energy and support so far. Keeping the library open in Market Bosworth is our common goal. We are prepared to HOLD ON. We know that other community library groups in Leicestershire have also faced difficult and uncertain times. Please continue to support MBCL. We will keep you informed of further developments.

It hardly seems a month since I last sat down to write an article for The Graphic. How the time does fly. Since my last article, we have helped the HSBC celebrate the 175th Anniversary of banking in Market Bosworth, by producing a timeline banner.

The banner was put together by our Archivist, Glynis Oakley, and was helped by both Beth Dawes and Ingrid Davison.

Well done! Everyone I have met who has seen the banner has offered compliments. I must also say at this juncture that Dean and Nicky at The Graphic did a brilliant job of setting it out and printing it. We have more anniversaries and events coming up, The Co-Operative and the Library Official Opening to name but two. Naturally The Market Bosworth Society will be supporting both events.

At our April Meeting, we were treated to an illustrated lecture

by Peter Liddle MBE (Honorary Visiting Fellow at The School of Archaeology at Leicester University). Peter’s lecture was entitled the ‘Rise and Demise of a Medieval Village’ and was enjoyed by over sixty members. We also had four new members join The Society (many existing members took the opportunity to renew their subscriptions). Marion was kept busy! Very busy, thank you Marion, you are much appreciated.

Peter explained how Anglo-Saxon villages were constructed and the role of field walking in identifying the location of these villages. Buildings of that time were of timber and thatch and therefore returned to the soil once the villagers ceased using them. Peter explained how by carefully logging items found, pieces of pottery and coins for example, it was not only possible to locate a village but also to tell how long it was in use. Modern technology also has a role; Ground Reading Radar is used to identify where test pits are most likely to provide positive results. Radio Carbon Dating is also used to give a surprisingly accurate date of the items found by the radar and test pits.

Peter also explained how life changed for the villagers with the introduction of the Enclosure Acts and the effect of the changes from strip farming to field farming. It is thought that villages were originally created as a centre of mutual cooperation. Once the plough was developed, it would take a team of 8 oxen to pull it. Very few families could afford more than one oxen but in working together it was possible to cultivate the land and avoid starvation. Peter warned against time travel to the 14th Century! During that time, crops failed in 1315, 1316 and 1317 when many of the population starved.

The Black Death broke out in around 1348 and resulted in the deaths of between a quarter and a third of the population.

Rural villages were never the same again. A truly fascinating lecture and judging by the lively question and answer session afterwards, I was not alone in enjoying it!

Test Pits were also discussed in more detail. Our past chairman Peter Loseby is very keen to develop knowledge of our village and is planning to introduce a series of test pits, hopefully engaging with schools to gain the involvement of pupils. More on this later as I have asked Peter Loseby to keep us informed of his plans and progress. Rest assured the Society will be supporting any initiative that will enhance our knowledge and help our children to appreciate our beautiful Market Town.

Our next lecture is a bit special too, “The Retail History of Market Bosworth” is being hosted by our own Robert Leake using the research of Glynis, Beth and Ingrid. Robert will be narrating the illustrated lecture but is keen to hear memories from members of the audience. The lecture will be on the 12th May, 2016 at the Free Church, Barton Road and will commence at 7.30pm. Please make a note of the earlier date. I do hope you will be able to come.

In another of her books, entitled ’Gloriana or the Revolution of 1900’ she correctly predicted that our nation would be led by a woman before 1999. This was at a time when women did not have a vote and were considered as second class citizens.

Lady Florence Dixie

Leicestershire County Council’s Green Plaque Awards You will recall that in January of this year, the Market Bosworth Society was invited to nominate someone from the rich history of our town for recognition by the Green Plaque Award Scheme.

The Society nominated Lady Florence Dixie for her work promoting the emancipation of women and in particular supporting the suffragette movement and equality of women in both marriage and divorce. She was President of the British Ladies Football Club and arranged football tours of Scotland. At the age of 23, she joined her husband in the exploration of Patagonia and recounted her many adventures in her book ‘Across Patagonia’

She acted as the war correspondent for the Morning Post and sent reports on the 1st Boer War and the aftermath of the Anglo-Zulu war in which she played an important role in the restoration of Cetshwayo as King of the Zulus.

She criticised the Fenians and the Irish Land League for their apparent indifference to the suffering of farmers and farm labourers who were in dire need of financial support. In Vanity Fair, she wrote an article on Home Rule for Ireland and went so far as to accuse the Irish Land League and the Fenians of misappropriating funds which had been specifically donated to assist the farming community. As a consequence of these criticisms, it is believed that an attempt was made on her life when walking her dog in Windsor Park.

The Market Bosworth Society is delighted to inform you that our nomination of Lady Florence has been shortlisted for an award. From April 25th, the final selection of nominees entered its public voting stage.

Winning the nomination will not only recognise the work of Lady Florence, who was surely a lady ahead of her times, but the resultant publicity will raise the profile of Market Bosworth and hopefully attract more visitors to the town.

Bagworth Pre-School Ltd Achieve Outstanding AGAIN! Bagworth Pre-School are celebrating after achieving ‘Outstanding’ in their latest Ofsted inspection.

A Fundraising ‘Eggstravaganza’, Polar Exploration and Rock Climbing at Dove Bank Primary School Pupils, parents and staff at Dove Bank Primary School in Nailstone have been busy scaling new heights, raising muchneeded funds and learning to be real-life polar explorers.

As part of their ‘Expedition to Canada’ topic, pupils from Classes 3 to 6 took part in a Polar Explorer workshop, hosted by Simon Harris-Ward a member of the Explorer Academy. Simon kept the children utterly enthralled with stories based on his real-life expeditions.

Blending personal development training, cross-curricular learning and enrichment, the full-day teambuilding programme took pupils on a journey to one of the remotest corners of the planet, all without leaving the school premises!

Pupils took part in hands-on team exercises and problem solving activities

allowing groups to practice key life skills, whilst image-rich interactive presentations sought to develop in pupils a sense of fascination and curiosity about the natural world.

Simon said the pupils were “an absolute pleasure to work with” and many of the pupils said it was “the best day ever”.

As part of their work on Character Education, Years 3 and 4 were invited

to neighbouring Ibstock Junior School to take part an exciting adventure afternoon which involved pupils ascending a climbing wall in order to develop an appreciation of the key values of determination and perseverance.

Headteacher, Fiona Shields, said the climbing wall was a fantastic experience as it empowered the children to conquer a difficult challenge, develop a

positive mindset and appreciate the importance of encouraging others as part of a team effort.

Mrs Shields also praised the children and parents who supported the school’s Easter Eggstravaganza.

“Thanks to the hard work of the School Council, pupils took part in a range of activities including an Easter bonnet parade, a name the bunny competition, Easter cake decoration and Easter egg hunt – with goodies kindly donated by a range of local sponsors, including Morrisons, B&M, Asda, Lidl and Thorntons.

“It has been an eggsceptionally busy time at Dove Bank Primary School over the last few weeks with lots going on. We must thank all the parents who have gone above and beyond not only in supporting the school but getting prizes and donations to help us raise much-needed funds for the school.”

As her Mayoral year comes to an end on May 17th, Councillor Janice Richardson chose to present community awards to three voluntary groups; Earl Shilton in Bloom, Friends of Hollycroft Park and Bosworth in Bloom. She has visited all three of the groups at work and saw their efforts in the community to ensure the Borough looks so colourful and beautiful. Discover the Dixie Difference The Dixie Grammar School

A Special Last Term at Dixie The 12th April 2016 was a special day for all Dixie students in the Upper Sixth as it marked the first day of their last term at the school. For some students, this is a journey that started not just eight years ago, when they joined the Senior School in Year 6; not even fourteen years ago when they joined the Junior School in Reception; but fifteen or more years ago when they joined the Dixie Grammar School Pippins Nursery. Such is the case for Florence Pritchett, Greg Hancock, Damon Burrage and Ed Platts (Deputy Head Boy). When asked to share their memories of their time at Dixie so far, this is what they said: “Looking back it is hard to believe we are almost at the end of what has been such a huge part of our lives and such an amazing journey. It is remarkable to

have spent so long with each other and to know each other so well and when you begin to look back, the first things you remember are the laughs, the jokes and the funny stories, from Ed crying on his first day at Pippins because he didn’t like the toast, to Greg getting stuck under a toilet door, to Damon dressing up in a tutu, wig and high-heeled knee boots for the Year 6 fashion show and enjoying it a little too much! Next, of course, come the trips and the big, memorable events, from Cadbury’s World and the day a helicopter and a rocket arrived at the Junior School, to skiing in Canada, hiking in Mozambique and undertaking work experience in France in the Senior School. Most remarkable, however, is how different we all are and how we are all set to take the next step in our education and lives, albeit in very different directions. Ever the keen sportsman, Greg is ready to take a gap-year and then continue his

passion studying sport rehabilitation in London; Floss, with her farming family background and passion for food and nutrition, is looking forward to studying Food Production and Marketing at Harper Adams University; Damon, whose plans seem to change as often as his fashion and haircuts, has finally settled on studying Finance at university; and Ed, having learned to love the school toast, is looking forward to taking up his offer to study Chinese at Oxford. We really think that Dixie has a special quality. It passes on to its students a real confidence to manage and succeed in all social and professional environments; a knowledge that success is always possible with hard work and a firm grounding in reality, built on strong relations between all members of the school community. Dixie Linguists Win Global Competition Year 10 and Year 11 students at the Dixie Grammar School have been crowned world champions in the annual language competition run by Vocab Express. This global event saw over 30 000 students around the world learning vocabulary online to accumulate points for their school. From Wednesday 2nd – Tuesday 8th March, the 85 Dixie students racked up well over half a million points, earning them first place in the Piccolo Cup with more than twice the number of points as the school in second place. The Piccolo Cup pits schools with fewer than 150 participants against each other. Dixie also fared extremely well in the Genius Cup, which ranks the totals of the top-scoring 25 pupils in any school, no matter how large, and where Dixie came fourth in the world.

Most of Dixie’s points came from its three core languages of French, German and Mandarin, but students also enjoyed the challenge of learning something new, performing well in languages such as Polish, Hebrew and Arabic.

The final school total was 556 450 points with Eniola Awodiya Dixie’s top scorer, with 60 855, pushed all the way by Amy Hemsworth on 56 800 and Zach Gauhar on 45 875. Dixie also now boasts three global champions, with Alex Harlock, Natalka Smaditch and Judith Kam scoring the most number of points in the entire championship for Polish, Hebrew and Mandarin respectively.

Triple Sporting Success at St Peter’s Since coming back after the Easter holidays, it has been an amazing few weeks of sport at St. Peter’s, winning 3 Hinckley & Bosworth Championships.

Firstly, the Year 3/4 gymnastics team competed in a competition at Hinckley & Burbage Gymnastics Club. They had to perform three routines to the best of their ability, competing against 7 other local schools.

After all the results had been calculated, they were announced as winners of the competition.

There was also success for the Year 5/6 tag rugby team, who won the Annual Hinckley & Bosworth Championships for the 2nd consecutive year. Throughout the afternoon, they played 4 group matches, winning all four. This led to a semi-final against Stafford Leys, which they won convincingly. In the final they played St. Margaret’s from Stoke Golding. After end to end action, St. Peter’s came out victorious to retain the trophy!

Finally, the Year 5/6 netball A team won the Hinckley & Bosworth Finals, held at William Bradford Academy. In the semi-final they beat St. Mary’s from Hinckley 19-0. This then led to a final against St. Peter’s B team - who had also won their semi-final. The A team won the final convincingly 12-2, however, both teams can be commended for their efforts.

All three teams will now go on to represent Hinckley & Bosworth at the Sainsbury’s School Games County Championships later on in the year. Amazing achievements from all the children involved!!

Team Congerstone Kirkpatrick Cup

Congratulations to the Year 3/4 football team who took part in the Kirkpatrick Cup on Friday 22nd April at Twycross House School. The boys won the tournament by winning 4 matches, drawing 2 matches and losing only 2 goals in the whole tournament.

UNITY Football Tournaments Well done to our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 football teams who played in matches against Griffydam P.S and Woodstone P.S. Both teams played really well finishing top of their groups without losing a single goal. The teams will now play in a semi-final. Good luck for your upcoming matches.

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament The boys and girls who took part in the Year 5/6 tag rugby tournament had a great day to Bosworth Academy. They played some excellent rugby with lots of tries and finished 3rd in their group.

Down The Rabbit Hole!

We welcomed three guests to our April meeting and hope that the evening’s programme tempts them to return.

Dot Barnard chose to read Wendy Cope’s poem “The Daily Help.” She explained her choice had been influenced by the fact that the poet had been commissioned to write a poem to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death on 23rd April.

The first speech of the evening was delivered by Sue Coleman, who gave a very informative speech concerning animal bravery and the award of the PDSA’s Dickin Medal to some amazing animals.

Next up was Daniel Cole, who gave us an extremely interesting biography with the title, “Me, Myself and I,” which he peppered with humour.

Our President, Josephine Burgess delighted and fascinated us with her speech “Down the Rabbit Hole.” She

certainly set the bar high as we were treated to a superb speech that may inspire one to re-read Alice in Wonderland to look for the clever play on words and the parody of characters with prominent people of the time.

A very amusing and interesting speech on the evolution of the toothbrush, dental hygiene and toothpaste was delivered by Margaret Barrett. War brings about very many changes, and it was noted that GI’s were introduced to the practise of cleaning their teeth when they joined up during WW2 – would this be the start of the obsession with chewing gum?

A hilarious topics session was chaired

by Neil Barker who invited speakers to role-play historical figures to give their excuses why something went wrong, such as Lord Cardigan’s disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade, and why King Alfred burnt the cakes.

The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. Our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining, helping to turn nervous wrecks into confident speakers. We meet at 7.30pm

More success at Market Bosworth Tennis Club Isabella Cockrell, aged 9 of Market Bosworth Tennis Club, won the Girls 10 and under grade 4 tennis tournament, at the Nottingham Tennis Centre on Saturday 16th April.

Isabella has recently moved into the 10 and under age group and has started the season really well - winning all 5 of her matches against tough opposition at the Nottingham Tennis Centre to win the tournament.

This follows on from a successful summer season last year, when Isabella won the Girls 9 and under Leicestershire County leader board.

Isabella has been playing tennis since the age of 4 and is coached by Nick Rose, the head coach at Market Bosworth Tennis Club.

Birdnotes

Since starting these Birdnotes approximately 20 years ago, first in the local Grapevine now in The Graphic, the first Swallow report always came from the late Doctor Cantwell. Followed by Mrs Cantwell until this year. I am sorry to have to report that Mrs Cantwell died before the swallows arrived this year.

Too many to mention have rung or stopped me to let me know of the arrival of our best known summer visitors. True to form, the Cantwells Swallows arrived this year on the 6th April.

Rhys Dandy watched 15 Sand Martin at Cropston reservoir, 4 adult Little Gull, 4 Swallows and a single House Martin.

Rhys said it was the first time he has had a House Martin in March since he started birdwatching. Philip Long of Newbold Verdon watched both Swallows and House Martin over Thornton Reservoir.

Ralph Richardson of Douglas Drive, Ibstock, watched Swallows as well as Siskin and Goldcrest. David Perrins of Ellistown saw his first migrant Chiffchaff on 3rd April. He also spotted 5 Goldfinch, Reed Bunting, 3 colourful Jays, a single Green Woodpecker, and a Song Thrush in full song. Chris Griffin of Newbold Verdon watched his first migrant Willow Warbler, 4 Bramblings feeding with Siskins, a Greater Spotted Woodpecker, a pair of Nuthatch, as well as some Coal Tits, Long Tailed Tits and Tree Creeper.

Mick Dolphin of Swepstone watched a Super Red Kite over the village; he also watched Reed Bunting and Swallow.

Roger Partridge of Ibstock rang to say Swans at Sence Park had 5 eggs and are sitting tight. Roger also watched 3 Jay, 3 Kingfisher, a single Green Woodpecker, 2 Buzzard and a single Weasel. Mick Ball of Leicester Road, Ibstock, had a pair of Collared Dove in his garden suffering with the dreaded throat infection that Greenfinch suffered from a few years ago and was not sure what to do. I advised Mick to ring the RSPCA for information reference the problem, but he never told me if he did

so. Bill Shaw of Barlestone rang to tell me of a Chaffinch which constantly flew at his car window and wing mirrors and seemed to be hurting self, but was not sure what to do. It is something that birds will do when they see their reflection and it can sometimes cause them harm, but no one has come up with a solution to the problem, other than covering the windows and mirrors. Our nephew, Rob Callaghan who works at Fradley, saw that House Martins were causing a problem with their droppings falling in the doorway of the building, and he was told to pull down the nests. Beings a wildlife enthusiast, Rob came up with a solution by buying an artificial nest from the Internet and copied it making several and relocating them away from the entrance door. I have not been in touch with Rob to see what the outcome is but will do within the next week or so.

Well done Rob, thinking of helping our birds and finding a solution instead of destroying the original nests without doing something to help. Glynn Pester rang to say he had watched a Raven over the Bardon Hill area. Ravens seem to be doing very well locally with regular birds seen. Glynn also mentioned a number of Thrushes which I am sure would be Fieldfare or Redwing. The niece of our neighbour Margaret, who lives in Shepshed, has 3 nest boxes in her garden and one already has young being fed. Someone let me have information referring to a Robin with 5 eggs but I have lost the details, so if you are that person please let me know the outcome.

Pauline Petty of the Mill House, Heather, rang to tell me of a Mallard pair with 14 Ducklings coming to her door to be fed.

Unfortunately the 14 are now down to 7 through predation but the mother is still bringing them to Pauline’s door to be fed. Pauline also mentioned seeing Woodpeckers, Finches, Blue, Great, Coal and other Tits, as well as Jays; a real hive of constant activity. A rare bird turned up at the Warren Hills area of Charnwood when a Great Grey Shrike Great Grey Shrike

was found. Lots of people flocked to see it. Shrikes will catch their prey and hang

it on a thorn bush that is known as its larder. The Red Backed Shrike is known by the name “Butcher Bird” because of this act of hanging its prey on a large thorn bush. I believe we have three Shrike species visit Britain, namely Great Grey, Lesser Grey, and Red Backed Shrike. A report of one of our most rare mammals, a Scottish Wildcat found shot and draped over wire fencing was featured on a social media page, causing a lot of coverage and concern. People concerned about such a disgraceful act of cruelty are following it up. I have just finished reading a book lent to me by a friend titled “SAY GOODBYE TO THE CUCKOO. It is certainly a worrying and factual read, with birds like the Yellow Wagtail, Spotted Flycatcher, Nightingale, Tree Pipit, Garden Warbler, Whinchat, Swift, Turtle Dove, Wood Warbler along with the Cuckoo and numerous more of our migrant birds down by possibly 50/60%. Michael McCarthy wrote the book with lots of input by several notable birding experts and authorities. On the dust cover write up it states “They pour into Britain each year in a multicoloured singing cascade: Cuckoos, Swallows, Martins, Swifts, Turtle Doves, Warblers, Wagtails, Wheatears, Chats, Nightingales, Nightjars, Thrushes, Pipits, and Flycatchers, In one of the wonders of the natural world, these tiny creatures have made epic, scarcely believable journeys from south of the Sahara to get here.” In Ibstock, around Chapel Street and High Street, Swifts could be seen yearly flying in flocks several years ago, but in the last couple of years I have not seen one Swift. Several houses in the village also had nesting House Martins every year, but again in the last few years they have been absent. It is a very worrying situation and how to deal with it is a very big problem. Some authorities are blaming Global Warming. It remains to be seen what the actual problem is. Rotary Club of Market Bosworth On Tuesday, 11th April we were pleased to welcome Andy Morrell, Manager of Tamworth Football Club, as our guest speaker. Andy’s parents Adrian and Beryl live in Cedar Drive, Market Bosworth and Andy attended Twycross House School. At Newcastle University, Andy started his football career with Newcastle Blue Stars, making 31 appearances and scoring 25 goals. In the 20023 season, Andy joined Wrexham, coached by Ian Rush, and scored 34 goals in 45 games. In that season he was the Andy Morrell at Wrexham . . . . . and at Tamworth F.C. highest scorer in all four divisions of the football league.

In 2003, Andy joined manager Gary McAllister at Coventry, scoring 9 goals in 19 starts. The following season he moved to midfield position and scored 6 goals. In 2007 Andy moved to Blackpool and in the 2006-7 season was Blackpool’s top scorer with 20 goals. In 2008, he declined a new contract with Blackpool and instead joined Bury, scoring 18 goals in 78 appearances.

Andy then returned to Wrexham where he played two seasons before being appointed caretaker manager.

Wrexham achieved 7 wins in 9 games so he was appointed permanent manager in 2011-12. During this season Wrexham were in the play-offs after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion to Fleetwood Town (whose striker was the then little known Jamie Vardy, now a Leicester City and England player).

In September 2014, Andy was appointed Tamworth’s manager in the Conference North league, quickly turning around their league campaign by taking them to the play-offs. Tamworth are (in the second week of April) in 7th position in the League with three games to play and hoping to reach 5th place and thus be in the play-offs for 2015-16.

During his career, Andy made 464 League appearances and scored 119 goals. One of Andy’s proudest achievements is having turned Tamworth F.C. from a one team club into a football club with under-9, under-10 and under-11 teams.

A round robin tournament was held at the last game of the season last year and 200 players, including first team players, paraded around the pitch. This year Andy hopes that over 400 players will attend the tournament and attend the last game of the season, which would be an enormous achievement in such a short time.

Andy says his proudest moment in his footballing career came when he led Wrexham to Wembley, first against Grimsby Town F.C. in the FA Trophy Final, winning on penalties. The Rotary thanked Andy for his interesting and informative talk second occasion was for the Conference play-off final where and were proud to welcome such a distinguished sportsman, a credit to Market Bosworth and his parents. they lost 2-0 against Newport County.

Parish Council Community Award The Parish Council for Kirkby Mallory, Peckleton and Stapleton will be honouring those who work and commit themselves to their communities on Tuesday 16th May at the Annual Parish Meeting. The winner of the Stan Pitt Community Award will be announced and the presentation will be made by Stan’s widow, June Pitt. The evening will start at 7:00pm at Stapleton Village Hall and everyone is invited and welcome to come along and say thanks to those who have voluntarily helped make their village and community a better place.

Anyone living or working in the Peckleton Parish could be nominated and nominations closed on 4th April. A small panel of judges from the Parish Councilors have had to decide who this year’s Award should go to but the decision will remain confidential until the Award is announced at the presentation evening.

The presentation will be followed by the Annual Parish Meeting when any resident can raise any issue or ask the Council Chairman any question. After the Parish Meeting, the Council will continue with their Annual Council Meeting.

Redgate’s very own (slightly) ‘Grumpy’ Cat

Loves human company – does not like other cats!

Could any ‘Graphic’ reader re-home Redgate Farm’s version of (slightly) Grumpy Cat? Tasha, who is spayed and about 11 or 12 years, loves human company (adults that is), but she does not like other cats (and is scared of younger children).

She has real ‘catitude’ but it’s obvious she would really blossom in a one-toone relationship; therefore Redgate is looking for a home where she will be the

only cat, and where there are no younger children. Tasha very much likes fuss and attention on her terms, so isn’t always a docile lap cat. But she loves to sit with people and ‘chat’ with them. Tasha is more than ready for a new start in life and longing for her own lifelong human pal.

Tasha is sleek and glossy, in good health, vaccinated and micro-chipped. She has recently been examined by the vet and her only problem is she is a bit plump!

If you have a quiet, adult household and can offer our ‘sweet Grump’ Tasha a forever home, then please, please come along to Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, on the A511 near Ellistown and meet her. Tasha has been in the cattery for several months and is getting very lonely, so please share Tasha’s plea with friends. We are open every day between 10.30am-4pm.
