News from Bardon Park Chapel Worship Service: Every Sunday morning at 10.30 am.

Our gatherings are fairly informal.

The Monthly Praise Meeting: (1st Saturday in each month, except August and January) at 3.00pm.

Schoolchildren from St Denys Church of England Infants, Ibstock Junior School and Ibstock Community College teamed up with Ibstock Brick to plant 900 trees at the site of its Leicester Factory development. The project marked the start of Ibstock’s environmental campaign to preserve the natural beauty of the site which is undergoing multi-million pound development.

Police Hand Over Voucher for Community Garden

COALVILLE

Two Police Community Support Officers were so dismayed by vandalism to Ibstock Community Garden that they applied for help from the police mutual fund to repair the damage.

PCSOs Ben Mason and Eve Holland were called to investigate damage to the garden’s polytunnel back in the summer of 2015. The cost of repair was estimated at £2,000.

This week, they presented a B & Q gift voucher to David Phillips, principal at ICC, towards the cost of maintaining the garden.

PCSO Mason said: “The gift voucher can be put towards repairs to the polytunnel or other equipment for the garden.

“Although the criminal matter has been dealt with, we wanted to do something to show our support for Ibstock Community Garden and the great work it does in the local community.”

Mr Phillips said: “”We are very grateful for the gift voucher which will certainly be a useful contribution towards the continued successful running of the garden.”

Birdnotes

Den Smith of Argyle Street, Ibstock, rang to say a Hen Harrier had been seen around the Sence Park/Kelham bridge area, a bird that occasionally is seen through the winter months, and an extremely rare bird for this area. Sister-in-Law Dawn, who is caretaker of Ibstock Cemetery, watches 2 Ravens around the trees in the cemetery on several occasions and a Sparrow Hawk constantly patrolling the area searching for a meal. garden in Heather, also John Truman watched one at Cossington meadows and sent me a very good photograph of it by email. Rhys Dandy sent me a superb photograph of the Cuckoo seen in the Ibstock allotments and reported in an earlier edition of Birdnotes. Mick Dolphin of Swepstone rang to say he is getting a very good selection of birds in his garden with numerous Blue Tits, and Great Tits, Coal Tits, Long Tailed Tits, several Robins, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, on several occasions a pair of Nuthatch, Chaffinches, and House Sparrows. Must have lots of feeders up Mick! I read a very distressing report which came from Bradgate Park that Some of the deer being culled and used for food had been found to have in their stomachs several plastic bags of dog faeces, some of the deer had up to five or six bags. Evidently dog walkers are bagging the dog poo but instead of taking it home or disposing of it in bins provided they are throwing it into the long grass and the deer come along eat the grass and digest the bags with it.

What a terrible situation for the wardens, knowing this is happening and being unable to stop it, unless the culprits are seen. Would certainly put off people who eat venison produced at Bradgate Park if they knew this was happening. An unusual sighting and report of a Great Skua came

from Rutland Water Reserve. Skua’s are 100% sea birds and to get one so far inland is very unusual. Alan Brooks and Derek Hart took another trip to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Reserve Drakelow and watched Kingfisher, Coal Tit, Redpoll, 6 Gooseander (3 male, 3 female), a Bullfinch, a Buzzard, and Greater Spotted Woodpecker. At Caulke Park, they had a superb days bird watching seeing male Siskin, Redpoll, male and female Brambling, Nuthatch, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Tree Creeper, Coal Tit, 6 Long Tailed Tit, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Sparrow Hawk, (male), and Jackdaw.

Blackbirds are raiding the Cotoneaster on the front of our bungalow during the cold spell for its berries and really devouring them in quick time, constantly clucking and calling whilst working at the bush.

Robins are searching the back garden for titbits and an occasional call tells you they are finding something, although we still have not replaced the feeders due to our rodent problem (hopefully sorted) we are getting birds looking for them, with Blackbirds and Tits constantly passing through. I read a very interesting article referencing European Turtle Doves. proven successful, BirdLife International has announced. Three juvenile birds have been observed at CEMEX quarries in 2015. The species population in Britain is halving in number every six years, making it our fastest declining bird.

Knowing that the species could be lost in Britain in the very near future, CEMEX and the RSPB embarked on a three-year conservation project at the company’s quarries in central England. Many factors may be behind the decline; however, the main contributor is thought to be the loss of suitable habitat and associated food shortages in the species breeding grounds. The project’s four quarries – Norton Subcourse, Norfolk; Hatfield, Hertfordshire; Southam, Warwick and Tattershall, Lincolnshire- offer suitable habitat with dense scrub and water. The task involved growing a special flower mix at the quarries to provide the birds ideal food, complemented by creation

of suitable nesting habitat. CEMEX are to be congratulated for their efforts and concern for our declining bird life, and especially the beautiful Turtle Dove. It will of course encourage a lot of other species, eg, Warblers, Nightingales, etc by providing both habitat and a food source. We are at the present time losing so much habitat to building that not only are we losing our bird life but also our insects, butterflies, moths, mammals, etc, through sheer lack of habitat and food. Hedgehogs are being lost again due to lack of hibernation places; wildlife cannot find any habitat to feed from, due to the loss of insects and berries etc. With the loss of hedgerows we also lose our hedgerow insects due to nowhere for them to breed. Without insects, birds have lost a valuable food source and cannot feed their young, leaving them to die, ditches and meadows are ideal places for ground nesting birds, also voles, and field mice, the main source of food for owls. Ponds are being lost and filled in, leaving water voles etc with loss of habitat. Building is causing a very large problem for all our wildlife e.g. birds, mammals, animals, insects, but what is the solution? Perhaps Birdnotes readers could tell me, if so, give me a call. Annual History Event The Ibstock Historical Society will be holding their annual History event on the 29th and 30th April 2016 - Not May as mentioned in previous months - and they are looking to make contact with any individuals or groups that would like to take part. Friday’s event will be held in the Old Hall at the Ibstock Community College on Central Avenue and the Saturday event will be at the Palace Community Centre, High Street, Ibstock.

The area was very reliant on agriculture, before the industrialisation of many processes, although villages such as Heather had a thriving Framework Knitting community. Then came the canals and mines leading directly to the arrival of the steam train.

Anyone with an interest in any of these fields from models and artifacts to related crafts are welcome to come along. Entrance is free to exhibitors and visitors alike and a variety of display tables and locations are available. Ibstock Junior School offer their support to Calais Refugee Camp Children On Friday 8th January, Ibstock Juniors’ School Parliament held a donation event for the children currently living in the Calais refugee camps. Our pupils were shocked by the conditions the refugees were living in and were keen to help out. Almost two hundred boxes and bags of clothes, toys and old belongings were kindly donated by our school community, which will soon be driven over to Calais by the East Midlands Solidarity charity. Our Year 6 classes have also written letters to the refugees. Thank you to all who donated and well done to the School Parliament!

Ibstock Day Nursery has been rated ‘good’ in all categories by Ofsted, following its latest inspection.

The report found that ‘staff work very well with parents to establish a warm, caring environment where children thrive.’

All children were said to be ‘working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age.’ Ofsted observed that even children whose starting points were lower than expected were ‘making swift progress and any gaps in their learning are closing.’

There was also praise for the ‘early reading and mathematical skills [which] help to prepare children well for the next stage of their education, such as starting school.’

Recently-appointed nursery manager Amy Roe was applauded for her ‘ambitious drive to maintain the highest levels of achievement for all children.’

This includes disabled and special needs children who, according to the report, ‘receive excellent, individualised support’ from staff, including the ‘highly qualified and very experienced special educational needs coordinator’.

David Phillips, principal of Ibstock Community College, said: “We are absolutely delighted with Ofsted’s findings which clearly reflect the hard work, vision and dedication of all the nursery staff.

Joseph’s parents received two letters breaking the news of his death. The first from LCpl George Riley of Leicester Road in Ibstock, stating he had known Joseph practically all of his life. No names required again this month, the Ibstock Historical Society would like to share a couple of images shared on our Facebook page by two of our online members who are joining us for the History event on the 29th (Community College) and 30th April (The Palace). The first is a team of Plate layers at Heather donated by our friends over at the Shackerstone Railway Society. The second comes from the Black family archives and features the ‘bobby’ from Ellistown around the turn of the century. For those that remember Big John towering over the houses on Ravenstone Road, Phil Black is producing a scale model of the earth mover and is bringing it along to the event.

A reminder to our members that the AGM is scheduled for Saturday 27th February which means we can’t make the community morning that day. The name of the Society may be the Ibstock Historical Society but we cover and have members from Swepstone, Nailstone, Heather and Ellistown as well as covering Newton Burgoland and Odstone.

Keeping The Flame Alive at Newton Burgoland Primary John Noble, Olympic Torch bearer in 2012, visited the school this January and presented an interesting display of memorabilia and gave a fascinating talk about his experiences as a torch bearer and how it had changed his life thereafter.

Pupils were able to hold the torch and said of his visit - “John told some very interesting stories about the Olympics, how to be selected and how he goes around raising money for charities… he is very inspirational.”

Playtimes are not rubbish at Newton Burgoland!

If you drive by Newton Burgoland Primary School you may see the pupils excitedly playing with the upcycled contents of their new Scrapstore Playpod, including barrels, old phones, carpet rolls, suitcases, logs and bread trays. The idea is to enhance play experiences and well-being during lunchtimes which can result in children being more ready to learn in the afternoon.

Being the first school in Leicestershire to install a Playpod, early feedback suggests it has been a very popular addition to the school playground. Pupils have named it Poddie, and one Year 6 pupil wrote “We build jungles, desert islands and dens using unwanted but amazing stuff! … It’s a great way to recycle and have fun at the same time… the scrap pod has everything we need for hours of fun!... The Scrap Pod has improved our playtime so much.”
