Saturday 30th April Exhibition by Ibstock Historical Society exploring ‘Our Industrial Heritage’ Displays will feature the various trades and industries that were an important part of the history of Ibstock and the surrounding villages. Ibstock Historical Society is joined by Shackerstone Railway Association, Whitwick Historical Group and Coalville Heritage Society. Ashby and Hinckley Museums are also providing exhibits.

Open from 10.00am until 3.00pm. Free Admission.

Wednesday, 11th May The Palace Annual General Meeting.

The meeting will be held at The Palace and will begin at 7.30pm. Open to the general public, but membership is required in order to vote. If you would like to find out more about becoming a member contact Tel: 01530 262400.

The first volunteering weekend of the year will take place on Saturday 12 March and Sunday 13 March from 10am to 2pm. After that, volunteering weekends will be held on the second weekend of every month.

All members of the community are welcome to get involved. Jobs will include pruning, tidying and general repairs ahead of the growing season.

Janet Beniston, chair of the community garden committee, said: “We would love to see anyone who has a bit of time to spare and would like to spend it outside doing something really worthwhile for the community. Tools, tea and good company are all provided!”

Local people are also welcome to adopt one of the free gardening plots to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The community garden, which is based at Ibstock Community College, includes a wildlife pond, free fruit and vegetable growing plots for local people, an amphitheatre and performance area, wildflower meadow, orchard, barbecue, a large polytunnel and a communal space for events.

Exhibition Will Showcase Student Talent Artwork by students from six different schools will go on display at an exhibition at Ibstock Community College in April.

The exhibition is a joint venture between the college and local primary schools to showcase the work of promising young artists whose talents may not have been recognised before.

The artists were free to choose their own themes and techniques.

Teacher and exhibition coordinator Marianne Clements said: “This is the first time we have held an exhibition of this kind and on this scale.

We will be filling the hall with artwork which has been produced by our students as well as pupils from our feeder primary schools.

“The exhibition will be open to everyone so it would be wonderful if local people could join us to look at some of the fabulous pieces on Corporal John Martin display.”

The exhibition will be open on Friday 22 April from 3.30 to 6pm and Saturday 23 April from 10am to 12 noon. Everyone is welcome.

The primary schools involved are Dovebank, Measham, Ibstock Juniors, Snarestone and Woodstone. Ibstock Community College works closely with local primary schools in all subjects – including art - throughout the year, to help create a smooth transition from primary school to high school.

Cover Story Ibstock in Bloom and 1st Ibstock Guides Prepare for Spring 12 guides from 1st Ibstock Guide Unit gave up a Saturday morning to work with members of Ibstock in Bloom to prepare the plants in the Melbourne Road Under 5’s Playground for Spring.

Buddleias and grasses were cut down, litter picked up, leaves swept away and lavender and sedums pruned.

In 2 hours of hard work, the Guides transformed the playground flower beds so that the new Spring growth will soon be visible.

‘Living in the National Forest’ is the theme for the 2016 Ibstock in Bloom poetry and photography competitions.

The poetry competition has 4 age categories, aged 7 and under, 8-11 years, 12-15 years & 16+. Entries to 57 High Street, Ibstock by 27 May. Whitwick and District U3A Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 15th April. As we begin to enjoy more daylight and warmer temperatures, the companionship offered by the U3A can be fully appreciated. There are over forty assorted Interest Groups to attract and engage people no longer in full time employment.

The speaker at April’s General Meeting will be Mal Trott, who will be sharing his interest in puppets. Although not a professional puppeteer, Mal has been fascinated by puppets since he was a child and will bring various types with him to demonstrate. “My Life with Puppets” promises to be an unusual and entertaining presentation.

To meet new friends and participate in varied activities, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2pm start. The U3A is a non-political and nonreligious organisation; everyone is welcome. The Turkish Army had made full use of the terrain around a loop in the River Tigris, bottling up British Troops of the 6th Division. Over the course of a couple of months, a succession of attempts were made to relive the Allied forces who were rapidly running out of food. It was during the third attempted relief at Sannaiyat on the 6th April 1916 that Arthur sustained the wounds from which he would die the following day. 1,200 British casualties were incurred alone during the operation.

April 1916 also saw the death of William Brooks of Ravenstone while serving with 1st Bn Leicestershire Regiment.

APRIL 1916 This month remembers the centenary of the death of Arthur Elverson during the Great War. Arthur was born in Swepstone where the family lived on Main Street. Following the death of his father in 1904, he and his mother moved to Aylestone Park in Leicester, where Arthur is listed as an ‘Engineers Pattern Maker.’ He enlisted with the Leicestershire Regiment and was placed with the 2nd Battalion, who were serving in Kut in Mesopotamia, now modern day Iraq.

The 12th April 1916 saw Arthur Everett of Ellistown enlisting in Leicester. He was born in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, but moved north to find work. He is first recorded at Pickering Grange Cottages not far from St Christophers church, later he moved to South Street and finally number 11 Ibstock Road where his occupation was recorded as ‘Assurance Agent.’

He was allocated to the South Staffordshire Regiment and sent to France to reinforce the British Expeditionary Force on the 26th July 1916. He arrived while the South Staffs were involved in the Battle of Delville

Wood on the Somme, which had begun on the 15th August. On the 31st, just over a month from landing on French soil, he was reported missing and was a Prisoner of War. An article appeared in the Coalville Times a few weeks after his repatriation following the armistice and provides a valuable insight into the life of a WW1 prisoner behind German lines.

The prisoners were sent to work on a clay bank about 20km from Cambrai, where they found themselves billeted in some old farm buildings. The state they were in left a lot to be desired with poor sanitation with the men sleeping in a long grass rack that was infested with insects. On the first night, the French civilians were allowed to give the prisoners bread and apples but they were given little water, a reoccurring theme. The prisoners were made to work long hard shifts and the rations provided were insufficient and of poor quality. After the first night, their guards prevented the French civilians, who sympathised with the prisoners and tried their best for them, from providing any more food. Any food reaching them had to be smuggled in. Arthur told of an incident where a young French boy of about 15 or so gave Arthur some cigarettes, but received a ‘brutal kicking’ for his troubles.

Not being able to wash and keep themselves clean was perhaps the worst situation. Eventually they were taken inland to Germany and he described the railway journey where forty men packed into an enclosed cattle truck and were too packed in to lie or even sit down comfortably and the only sanitary provision was the tub in the middle of the truck. A small ration of bread and four small tins of meat had to suffice for 40 men, the second’s day ration proved even worse and was a single loaf for all forty men. While they were in German Stations, the prisoners found the local people adopted a threatening attitude and shook their fists at the prisoners.

After about seven weeks in the camp they were sent to Oberhaussen and then had to walk about 8km to work in the coalmines at Osterfeld. The men initially refused but were ordered to descend the mine at the point of a bayonet. The one thing that kept many of the prisoners going was the parcels that were sent to them from England which were received fairly regularly. Arthur recalled one awful day in November 1917 when 1,100 British prisoners were brought into the camp looking starved and in rags many of them suffering from unattended wounds. They had been working behind German lines when a barrage of shells from their own side landed among them. Many were killed at the time and another fifteen of the newly arrived prisoners died on that first day.

Arthur and his comrades knew the armistice had been signed, before the Germans told them, through a Swiss paper that was brought into the camp, in total he spent two years and three months as a captive. After the war, Arthur returned to his job as an ‘Insurance Agent’ and in 1920 Arthur married Bertha Lane, they would go on to have five children. Arthur died in 24th August 1961 aged 78.

Historical Society Annual Exhibitition ‘Our Industrial Heritage’ The annual Ibstock Historical Society event is being held over two days in April and we’d like to see as many of you as possible. Friday 29th will be in the Old Hall at the front of Ibstock Community College, the following day Saturday 30th will be at the Palace on the High Street.

Opening times will be between 10am and 3pm, entrance is FREE - not often you see that on a Bank Holiday event although we are collecting for the district branch of the Royal British Legion. All visitors are welcome as the displays differ between the two days.

Harratt’s Yard We have two displays of our own celebrating the many industries that shaped our area and we are joined by our friends from Ibstock Parish Council and Whitwick Historical Group who also have two displays, the Museum’s at Ashby and Hinckley, the Bevin Boys Association providing an insight into life below ground for the WW2 conscripts.

We are being joined by Phil Black who is making a scale model of Little John who dominated the Ravenstone Road skyline as it dug out Sence Valley, Coalville Heritage Society have a display of old photographs, Micheal Arkle has a display of Victorian farm and household artifacts and Shackerstone Railway Society are bringing along an interactive display of how Heather Station operated. These industries have influenced our area as far back as Roman times and this month’s photo’s celebrate the varied industrial activity that our event celebrates.

Sport Relief Challenge Makes Sence Sport-loving staff and students at Ibstock Community College have raised more than £1,200 for Sport Relief.

Fifty staff members and all 550 students completed several laps of Sence Valley Forest Park to raise money for the charity. Some chose to jog and others to walk.

Everyone taking part collected sponsorship or paid a £2 entrance fee.

Students collected House Points for every lap they completed. Some students also took part in a sponsored swim to raise extra funds for Sport Relief.

The latest total stands at £1,250 with some sponsorship money still to be collected.

Principal David Phillips, who also took part, said: “Everyone came to college in their sportswear for the day and threw themselves whole-heartedly into the challenge. It is important that students are aware of issues outside their community and do their bit to help. We are delighted to have raised more than £1,000 for Sport Relief.”

Four girls from Ibstock Community College have been crowned champions in the Leicestershire Schools League county badminton finals which were held at Babington College in Leicester on Monday 7th March 2016. The girls had earlier won the North West Leicestershire league to earn a place in the final Sisters, Isobel and Evie Pike and team mates Niamh Elliott and Katy Evans played for more than three hours to secure the win. All the girls are 13 except for Evie, who is 11.

The Ibstock girls recorded easy wins against John Ferneley, Kibworth, Sir John North and Soar Valley schools, not dropping a single game along the way. Things got closer facing Wigston Academy in the semi-finals but the girls managed a 4-1 win before facing Humphrey Perkins school in what was to be a closely fought contest. At 2 games apiece, Katy and Evie went 20–19 down in the deciding game before coming back from the brink of defeat to win the game 21–20, clinching the match and the overall title.

They will now represent Leicestershire in the regional finals to be held in Loughborough on 22nd March.

Ibstock Community College PE teacher Richard Pilcher said: “The final was a real nail-biter – it came down to one point!

The girls did incredibly well; I am so proud of them all.” Katy Evans added: “We were so happy when we won the point and the match! We are all really looking forward to representing Leicestershire.”

Plans for 2016 Market Bosworth Country Show Underway Plans for the 127th Market Bosworth Country Show are in place. This year’s show is to be held on Sunday 3rd July at Cow Pastures Farm, The Park, Market Bosworth CV13 0DP. The show will be raising funds for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Now is the time to book your trade stand or stall in the craft tent. Forms for both are available on the show’s website www.marketbosworthshow.co.uk or contact the secretary Helen Earp on 01455 290489 or email heearp@gmail.com The Flower Show schedule has recently been completed and is also available on the website. New this year are 2 colouring classes for children and, reflecting the increasing interest in bread making at home, a class for the best 4 bread rolls. The flower arranger’s themes are carnival in Brazil, in light of the Olympics taking place in Rio De Janerio and the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Country crafts will be featured and include hedge laying, thatching, chainsaw sculpture, wickerwork and coracle making. Vintage tractors and farm machinery will be on display and there will be classes for heavy horses, riding side saddle and Hereford cattle.

2 rings of entertainment and displays will take place throughout the day including for the first time this year American Civil War re-enactors as well as the World War 2 vehicles and their drivers.

Music will be provided by local artist Kate Field.

Marsh Harriers, close up views of Water Rail, Kingfisher, 30+ Common Snipe, Graham Pettitt of Ibstock took a trip to numerous Lapwings, Reed Bunting, Longmoor (Queen Elizabeth Jubilee and lots of Waterfowl. Standing in the Wood) with good results watching a Water Rail Short-Eared Owl, Several Skylarks, Meadow Pipits, Yellowhammers, and Redwing. Rhys Dandy went to Cropston Reservoir and watched a 2nd Winter Mediterranean Gull, Curlew (calling) and a Kittiwake (super find). Glynn Pester watched a Little Egret on a nearby golf course and also locally watched 7 Common Buzzard, and a single Tawny Owl. John Truman of Ibstock emailed me a photograph of a Short–Eared Owl and Reserve car park, already inspecting the one of a Robin feeding from his hand at nest boxes, the Tree Sparrows seemed Rutland Water. Also from Rutland Water, very busy. A bird that created a lot of a special bird showed when a Long interest locally was reported from a farm Billed Dowitcher was spotted. David at Lount, when a Black Redstart was Perrins of Ellistown rang to say he gets seen and lots of local people went to see a Greater Spotted Woodpecker on his it. Following my report in last months Birdnotes ref CEMEX UK Quarries, I had a phone call from one of their directors, Andy Spencer. Andy lives locally at Newton Burgoland and of course receives the Graphic. He also sent me a very long and informative email about the Nature Conservation work the company’s quarries are involved in. One in particular Doveholes near Buxton in Derbyshire. Doveholes quarry plays host to a very rare tiny British Finch, namely the Twite. The bird was on the verge of extinction in the Doveholes area being down to a total of approximately 6 individual birds. Cemex researched the birds feeding habits and found the bird feeds mainly on a seed named Sorrel, a weed and a member of the Dock family. CEMEX immediately planted the area with the seed and it was extremely successful with the Twite at

the present time up to a count of 60 plus.

In the West Midlands CEMEX is helping the Butterfly Conservation officer, Mike Slater, by creating 5 new colonies of the Small Blue Butterfly. Again by restoring the butterflies’ habitat, and the butterfly shows an increase of 167%. Also a very large increase in the Wild Flower population. They have also created 9 new nature reserves covering an area of 600 hectares, and their employees have volunteered more than 1500 hours in their (Lend a Hand Scheme for Nature.)

Another migrant bird on the Red Danger list, Jay the beautiful migrant Turtle Dove has been found breeding at two of their quarries with 3 juveniles found last year (superb). I have nothing but praise for a company so helpful in increasing the chances of our wildlife and look forward to more information from Andy reference his company’s efforts to improve the wildlife throughout their quarries. I remember years ago a friend and me going to the Derbyshire area hoping to see the Twite but being even then so thin on the ground we came away disappointed with little success. With the bird now on the increase due to help from CEMEX, possibly another trip to the Buxton area would be worthwhile.

Andy also mentioned he was watching a Blackcap Warbler on one of his

feeders; evidently an over wintering bird.

Blackcaps being a summer visitor but more seem to be wintering here at the moment. Over our bungalow we have had several Common Buzzard and the occasional Raven giving its cronking call. A regular pair of Robins and a pair of Blackbirds are constantly around our back garden area, possibly searching for food or maybe a nesting area. We have not replaced the bird feeders yet but I am tempted to do so having not seen any sign of the rodent who caused the removal due to over spill that it would be picking up. Of course, the hedgehogs that we caught in the trap, meant for the rat, will possibly still be in hibernation for a little while yet. By the end of the month we shall begin to see the return of our migrant birds. I look forward to seeing

the first Swifts, and Swallows flying around and hearing the sound of our returned Warblers e.g. Blackcap, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler, and Chiffchaff etc. With news of the first Osprey already returned to Rutland Water Reserve, Friday 18th March - the migration season is off to a good start and with places like Sence Valley, Kelham Bridge Reserves and now Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Wood we are spoilt for choice locally.
