THE OF

In deciding what to program in the holiday slot for my first season at the Grand Theatre, I did not need to ponder the question for long. The Sound of Music is one of my favourite pieces of all time. Growing up in very-smalltown Saskatchewan my dad was the principal of the high school and the only two child-appropriate movies the school owned were The Sound of Music and West Side Story. On weekends, he would borrow the school VCR and these tapes and bring them home for us to watch again and again. Every doll I owned was named Maria!
Getting to direct this show was a lifelong dream, and I am thrilled to share it with you.
holiday season, and yet it fits so well with so many of the joys of the season: family, love, home, music, togetherness.
In re-investigating this piece as an adult theatre-maker, I find that within the nostalgia is also a complex and beautifully crafted play. It is the story of people who are adrift, people searching for a home: searching for a place where their heart feels safe and at peace. While Maria, Captain von Trapp, and the children are all looking for home, they are also all going about it in the wrong way. It takes coming together and truly opening their hearts to one another to see the real path forward. The Sound of Music is also a timely play, asking us to examine how much we are willing to give up in order to stand for what we feel is right in the face of tyranny.
Diving into this show has been a labour of love for us all. Thank you for making this production, and the Grand Theatre, part of your holiday tradition. It is a celebration we are incredibly proud and grateful to be a part of.
Happy holidays!
RACHEL PEAKE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
There is so much nostalgia for many of us in this story and these songs. The joy of introducing it to the next generation, or to someone who may have missed it in their life so far, is a delight. It is not a story about the Above Photo by Dahlia Katz.
We’re so glad you’re here.
The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.
In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.
Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.
We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

* Music and Lyrics for "Something Good" by Richard Rodgers. THE SOUND OF MUSIC runs 2 hours and 45 minutes, which includes a 20 minute intermission.
For a lot of us, The Sound of Music rings the bells in the memory of our childhoods. It warms our holiday season in a way, I think, no other musical really can. As a child, I remember watching the movie and rewinding songs like “The Lonely Goatherd”, transfixed on Julie Andrew’s vocal abilities. I wished I could smell Edelweiss and believed those hills would somehow come alive! My inner child has been resting so comfortably these days, being able to surround her with the best of memories and some of the highest joys.
We, as a world, tend to forget how beautiful it is to be a child. To wonder, to imagine big, to love without abandon, and to freely accept new information at face value.. As adults, we have a duty to protect every child’s ability to discover beauty, as a goal of the day. We as adults hold influence, we hold the answers. We own courage. There is a responsibility to use our courage for the good of ourselves, our families, and each other.
The world around us is fraught with difficulties inexplicable. As we enjoy our right to peace, free from strife, let us take a deep inhale and savour this moment. Let us then go out into the world and work our hardest to protect the world’s children. This story speaks to an immensely atrocious
historical moment. Remember though, we continue to live through these mass assaults against humanity.
I’m not asking you to fix the world’s problems. I need you to open your eyes and your heart to them. Decide what it is you can do to lend a hand in making sure all the world’s children know peace and freedom. Saving them is how we save the child within each of us.
After all, “you don’t save yourself by giving up”. - Captain Von Trapp.
I wish you the biggest smiles and the best laughter this holiday season. May it bring you light in the darkness, and peace to your heart.
ALEXANDRA KANE MUSIC DIRECTOR
From the cast and crew meet-and-greet until the team moves to its final dress rehearsals on the Spriet Stage, the magic of theatre comes alive in the rehearsal hall.
The joy of making theatre exists long before a company takes its bow at the end of the first performance. From day one of a new project to staging, sitzprobe, and more, the process of creating a new production means turning an idea into reality through creativity, craft, and collaboration in the Developers Rehearsal Hall.
PRESENTING SPONSOR
When one thinks of theatrical duos, Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein always make the list. The mere pairing of their surnames evokes intense feelings of sentiment and nostalgia. To this day, the indominable pair's work is revived to critical and financial success. But, why are the musicals crafted by this historic team still revered today?
Before forming their historic writing partnership, the two were both well known for their collaborations with other writers. Roger worked with lyricist Lorenz Hart to pen On Your Toes and Pal Joey, while Hammerstein worked with composer Jerome Kern on Music in the Air and Show Boat (often referred to as a masterpiece of American musical theatre). "Here we come to a completely new genre—the musical play as distinguished from musical comedy. The play was the thing, and everything else was subservient to that play." says Mark Lubbock in his book American Musical Theatre: An Introduction. With Kern and Hammerstein's collaboration, musical theatre began to move away from Jazz and the sound of the Tin Pan Alley. When Hammerstein began to work with Rodgers, the traditional Broadway sound as we know it was born: lush orchestrations with sweeping string lines and a palpable sentimentality.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's collaborations began with a musical adaptation of Lynn Rigg's Green Grow the Lilacs which became Oklahoma!, opening on Broadway in 1943. Their new Broadway hit further integrated theatrical elements of scenes and songs, seamlessly layer-
ing in choreography and music to tell the story. While prior Broadway shows focused on purely entertainment and spectacle, Rogers & Hammerstein’s approach emphasized the narrative and supported the story with dazzling design and choreography. The two would go on to write other classics of the American musical theatre canon: Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific, Allegro, and The Sound of Music. When Hammerstein passed in 1960, it marked the end of their ground-breaking collaboration. A big part of writing the fully integrated musical play was centering the story and characters, not the catchy songs or the stars: bringing this American art form to its emotional maturity.
At the age of 10, a young Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) moved next door to the Hammersteins and Oscar Hammerstein became a surrogate father figure, mentoring and guiding Sondheim's love and passion for music theatre.
In his early years as a composer, Sondheim wrote a show called By Georgeand when he asked Oscar’s opinion, Hammerstein said it was the worst thing he had ever read: "But if you want to know why it's terrible, I'll tell you."
They spent the rest of the day dissecting the musical, and Sondheim later said, "In that afternoon I learned more about songwriting and the musical theater than most people learn in a lifetime." Sondheim would continue to seek Hammerstein's advice when writing lyrics for iconic songs such as "Maria" in West Side Story (1957) and "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from Gypsy (1959): "[Hammerstein's] comments after (a dress rehearsal of West Side Story) had much more to do with dramaturgy..." recalls Sondheim. The prioritized element of character's motive when writing music and lyrics for the theatre was firmly instilled by Sondheim's mentor.
Mary Rogers (1931-2014) was the eldest child of Richard Rogers and had a modestly successful career in musical theatre with Once Upon a Mattress (1959). "My favorite song that Daddy ever wrote is in Oklahoma!, and it’s called "Lonely Room." ... it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of music I think he ever turned out, and it is heartbreaking."
Mary's son and Richard's grandson, Adam Guettel, was born in 1964. Adam was a musician from the age of 13, soloing at the Metropolitan Opera.
He would pivot to writing music theatre, mentored in this process by Stephen Sondheim. He's best known for Floyd Collins, The Light in the Piazza, and Myths & Hymns: "[Richard Rodger's] melodies were catchy. But another way of putting it would be that his melodies were densely encoded with emotional information about character, about time and place, about where that character was at that moment, even without the words."
Placing the motives and circumstances of the character first is now standard practice in modern day music theatre writing.

Richard Rodgers' contribution to the musical theatre of his day was extraordinary, and his influence on the musical theatre of today and tomorrow is legendary. His career spanned more than six decades, his hits ranging from the silver screens of Hollywood to the bright lights of Broadway, London and beyond. He was the recipient of countless awards, including Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys. He wrote more than 900 published songs and 40 Broadway musicals. For two decades Richard Rodgers collaborated exclusively with Oscar Hammerstein II on such musicals as Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King And I, Pipe Dream and The Sound of Music. Collectively, their musicals have garnered dozens of awards, including Pulitzer Prizes, Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and Drama Desk, Drama Critics’ Circle, Outer Critics’ Circle, Laurence Olivier, and Evening Standard Awards.
The Rodgers & Hammerstein partnership began with Oklahoma! in 1943. Their first musical was a groundbreaking milestone, blending musical comedy and operetta into a whole new genre - the musical play. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King And I, Me And Juliet, Pipe Dream, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, their musicals have garnered dozens of awards including: Pulitzers; Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys; and Drama Desk, Drama Critics’ Circle, Outer Critics’ Circle, and Olivier Awards.
His last musical was The Sound of Music, written with Richard Rodgers in 1959; his last song was "Edelweiss," written for that musical during its Boston tryout. Oscar Hammerstein II died at his farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, on the morning of August 23, 1960.
Lindsay was an actor, stage manager, director and playwright before teaming up with Russel Crouse. Their partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for more than 28 years. The two men first joined forces in 1934, when the producer Vinton Freedley brought them together to rewrite the libretto for Anything Goes. Their first straight play, Life with Father, opened in 1936 and holds the record for the longest running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. Lindsay and his wife, Dorothy Stickney, created the roles of Clarence and Vinnie Day, performing them for five years.
Librettist
Russel Crouse (1893-1966) was a newspaperman, a press agent for the Theatre Guild, the author of several books and a librettist before partnering with Howard Lindsay. Lindsay and Crouse wrote The Sound of Music (score by Rodgers and Hammerstein); the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union; Call Me Madam and Mr. President (scores by Irving Berlin); The Prescott Proposals and The Great Sebastians. They produced The Hasty Heart, Detective Story and Arsenic and Old Lace.

Experiencing live theatre impacts me greatly as it’s an opportunity to appreciate the work others have put in to create a wonderful piece, and to further understand the many ways theatre impacts people on a deeper emotional level.
There are many highlights that come with a special program like Student Club, but for me, I’ve always been grateful for the opportunity to broaden my knowledge of musicals while also connecting with others in the younger generation.
It’s something you don’t come across everyday; it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

As a charitable organization, we depend on donors, like you, to help us bring world class entertainment to the stage.
Please consider making a donation today to invest in the future of arts and culture in London.
Why do you choose to support the Grand?
We commit to supporting the Grand because we truly believe in the importance of arts and culture to make a city great. We're so lucky to have a place that enriches London with exciting, intriguing, and sometimes very thought provoking shows. AND- theatre is just so darn entertaining!
How do you think the Grand elevates our City and Region?
The Grand elevates London as a cultural centre- we can really see the growing recognition and attention the Grand is receiving for bringing premieres, new and forwardthinking shows not to mention the creative programming done through the theatre that enhances it all for audiences.
What connects you to the Grand?
Initially we connected because we simply enjoy the theatre experience. But as time went on, we both grew further into the Grand community- new friendships, shared experiences and creating impact are what keep us coming back. Becoming involved with the Board of Directors (Alleyne) and planning the Grand Gala (Costello) are ways we try to give back so others can enjoy things the way we do.
What is one of your most memorable experiences at the Grand Theatre?
What is one of your most memorable experiences at the Grand Theatre?
Our most memorable experiences at the Grand are numerous- every year there is something outstanding! The Grand Gala is such a celebration of achievement and talent. Opening nights are buzzing with excitement of a new show and seeing old friends. The recent production of Clue is one that won't be soon forgotten and the production scale of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was unreal! Until we meet Ambrose face-to-face, I'm sure there will always be something unforgettable at the Grand!
