Welcome to the Grand Theatre

We’re so glad you’re here.

The Grand Theatre acknowledges that we are located on the traditional territories of the Original storytellers and caretakers of this land, and of the Nations, both settler and Indigenous, who continue to uphold the various treaties of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapéewak.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land, which today we know as Southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in the area.

Locally, there are three First Nations Communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people, and affirm our commitment to welcoming these communities to the Grand Theatre, while working to remove barriers to access and participation.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work, share, and tell stories together.

WELCOME

I missed the first wave of Frozen. I was a busy 30-something artist, and animations weren’t really on my radar. All of that changed dramatically when my daughter was born. I couldn’t tell you the first time we watched the movie, but I can tell you the feeling of awe watching a tiny human belt out “Let It Go”. It was profound.

How far our princesses have come in a generation.

I grew up with Belle and Ariel throwing everything in their lives into chaos for a man. My daughter is growing up with Moana and Elsa and Anna. Kudos to Disney for the change, but also kudos to a society that demanded it. The first time I watched the film of Frozen and realized that the true love was not going to be what I was programmed to expect, I wept with joy. It felt like a new way of celebrating love.

I come to this project as someone with deep love of the source material. Along with the rest of the creative team, we set out on this journey to create a stage version that honours the original film: that delivers the heart and the humour and creates the key special moments. We recognize the responsibility we hold. At the same time, we want to celebrate the differences between stage and film, playing into the magic of seeing things live, introducing spectacular theatre to the next generation, and allowing a fresh interpretation of the characters we all love so much.

My daughter has been our uncredited seven-year-old advisor at every step of this journey. People often advise emerging directors to imagine their “pristine audience” and to work to fulfill those needs and tastes. Instead, my mentor took a different approach and always advised me to create each of my productions for one very specific person I know well. With the goal being that we can then deliver on dreams from the specific to the universal.

Which means, undoubtedly, this one is for Anwen.

And for all of you.

YOUNG company Q&A

disney’s frozen

what excites you about your role in at the grand theatre?

Harmony Holder

“The very first time I watched the movie I fell in love with the Anna character, so I am thrilled to play the role of one of my favourite characters ever! I also think that Young Anna has a very funny and quirky personality, and I feel that her personality is very similar to mine. Being able to show that personality, while playing a dream role AND while doing something I love, is an honour and is probably what excites me most about playing Young Anna at the Grand!”

oakan oyafuso Young Anna Young Anna

“I’m excited about this role because I get to have a big sibling and I’ve always wanted an older sibling!”

Kylie Prouty Young Elsa

“I'm excited to play Young Elsa in the Grand Theatre's because Frozen I get to play the older sister but back at home, I am the little sister with two older siblings. I'm also excited to make magic for the audience.”

Alba Evora Weiler Young Elsa

“Playing Young Elsa is very exciting for me because I have always been fascinated by magic. I can’t wait to start training and making Elsa’s powers a reality on stage.”

Wardrobe Apprentice

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS PROGRAM?

This program is unique because it allows me the opportunity to experience a full season at the Grand Theatre, during which I get to shadow many different elements of wardrobe production. It’s hands on, and I’ve already had the opportunity to build many cool pieces. I have incredible mentors and many opportunities to learn!

WHAT ARE 3 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM?

I’ve loved getting to see behind the scenes of elements of production that stitchers/costumers are not normally privy too, including media calls and dress rehearsals.

I’ve really enjoyed helping the wardrobe running crew downstairs, including helping load in a show and styling many blonde wigs for Frozen!

I’m really looking forward to The Importance of Being Earnest in the spring, the costumes are going to be so beautiful, and I can’t wait for you all to see them!

SPOTLIGHT

TD Ready Commitment supports the development of the next generation of arts talent at the Grand Theatre through the TD Emerging Talent Program.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR YOUR THEATRE CAREER?

I aspire to be a cutter someday, and I hope to have the opportunity to work at many different theatres all over Canada.

WHY DID THE TD EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM SPEAK TO YOU?

This program is such an incredible opportunity to learn and hone my skills. The Grand has an incredible reputation and I’m so grateful to be able to absorb all of the knowledge held by my many mentors here.

FROM PAGE TO STAGE:

The Evolution of The Snow Queen into Frozen

Disney’s Frozen that we know and love – on the screen and on the stage – is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, written almost two hundred years ago in 1844. This timeless fairy tale spins a story about friendship, innocence, and emotional resilience. At its heart are two children – Gerda and Kai – whose bond is tested when the Snow Queen lures Kai into her icy realm. Gerda’s courage and steadfast love guide her through a cold, symbolic landscape, making her one of Andersen’s earliest and strongest female protagonists – a child who rescues rather than is rescued.

First as a blockbuster film (and world-wide cultural moment) and then in its Broadway musical adaptation, Disney’s Frozen transform Gerda and Kai’s tale into a modern fable of sisterhood. The Snow Queen becomes Elsa, a conflicted heroine whose powers isolate her, while Gerda’s bravery is reborn in Anna’s warmth and loyalty. Together, they represent two facets of female strength – self-acceptance and unconditional love. On stage, their relationship deepens through music and movement – the songs “Let It Go” and “For the First Time in Forever” turning childhood emotions into theatrical catharsis.

For many, Frozen rekindles the wonder of Andersen’s tale through nostalgia, and taps into longing for a love that could melt any frost. Its evolution reflects contemporary values, where young women are agents of their own destinies, rewriting fairy tales to affirm that true magic lies in the power of love to see each other through safely.

Favourite Fairy Tales of the women leading Disney's Frozen to the Grand Theatre stage

Jack and the Beanstalk RACHEL PEAKE, DIRECTOR

“I love the sense of danger and adventure in it, and of the idea of making your own luck. Though I also remember, even as a child, being shocked that he gets away with stealing!”

The Little Mermaid

ALEXANDRA KANE, MUSIC DIRECTOR '

“The mermaid saves the prince, yet he marries someone else. Her sisters then give her a tool to exact her revenge on him but she decides against it and instead becomes something even greater than she was before. It teaches us to do the right thing always, and you’ll become an even greater version of yourself.”

The Ugly Duckling

AINSLEY HILLYARD, CHOREOGRAPHER

“I appreciate the story for its messaging around resilience, endurance, and self acceptance in the face of societal pressure. A belief in oneself regardless of hardship and perseverance in the face of bullying and unattainable beauty standards.”

PETER MARKVOORT DONOR SPOTLIGHT

“Arts funding has been on the decline for over a decade while the needs of the sector continue to grow. There has never been a more important time to support the theatre, in whatever way you can.”

Peter Markvoort’s journey with the Grand began decades ago, as a cast member in two High School Projects, Oliver! (2001) and The Music Man (2002). Reflecting on this experience Peter expressed, “sometimes you have to put a costume on to take a costume off.” He experienced firsthand how the theatre is a place that celebrates diversity and where he felt he could be his authentic self.

A Grand Theatre Foundation Board member since 2018, Peter has supported the theatre, as a donor, patron, housing partner, on the Gala committee, and through many special projects and fundraising campaigns.

Believing that theatre needs to be accessible to all, Peter identifies the importance of programs like the Pay What You Can and the Indigenous Ticketing Program. He holds a strong belief that the stage is an avenue to draw attention to societal issues, to access much needed escapism, and to tell untold stories, including those of the Original Peoples of this land.

Thank You TO OUR DONORS
