We remain committed to upholding the values of hope, grace, and perseverance that define FXW—and to ensuring they continue to guide and inspire our community for generations to come.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW), the Board of Directors of The Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC), and the entire faculty and staff at FXW, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your contributions to a successful 2024–2025 school year.
Looking back on the past year, we are deeply proud and grateful for the unwavering support and dedication of our community. We honored the spirit and values that make FXW extraordinary and remained steadfast in our commitment to deliver on our Mission.
As we look ahead to the new school year, we celebrate the traditions that have shaped FXW for more than 35 years—traditions that bring joy and a strong sense of belonging to our students and families. This deep-rooted community spirit is the foundation of everything we do, supporting the hallmarks of an FXW education.
With faith as our Charism focus this year, we are reminded of what it means to be a Catholic independent school—grounded in values of compassion, justice, service, and love of neighbor, and welcoming of all faith traditions. In this spirit, we nurture the spiritual growth of every student, cultivating compassion, purpose, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.
We are deeply grateful for your generosity, which reflects your belief in our Mission, our work, and the people who bring it to life. This annual giving report stands as a powerful testament to your support and the shared commitment we all have to creating a vibrant and nurturing learning environment.
As stewards of this extraordinary school, we are mindful of the trust you place in us. We remain committed to upholding the values of hope, grace, and perseverance that define FXW—and to ensuring they continue to guide and inspire our community for generations to come.
Thank you for your support and dedication.
The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) was founded in 1989 with a vision to develop a rigorous academic Catholic school that would embrace all religions and build on the multi-layered diversity of Chicago —ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic. As FXW has evolved, these ideals solidified into our Charisms.

The Children at the Crossroads Foundation was created in 1990 on the belief that economic circumstances should not preclude an eager and capable child from receiving a quality education. The Foundation seeks to enrich our community by significantly improving the academic achievement, self-esteem and life opportunities of schoolchildren by offering need-based scholarship support to students attending The Frances Xavier Warde School.

FXW is an independent, Catholic school where all students experience and gain an understanding of religious diversity.
10 faith traditions are represented at FXW religion curriculums are offered
In Preschool and Kindergarten, the experience of faith is rooted in the student’s imagination and filled with stories of awe and wonder of God. In Grade 1 through Grade 8, students participate in either a Catholic religion class (Moonbeams) or an interfaith religion class (Shooting Stars). Both curricula mirror one another. Throughout the year, children participate in ecumenical prayer services and Masses as an expression of their faith experience. As an intentionally inclusive community, FXW School values the opportunity for interfaith dialogue, which involves listening, learning, and asking questions to deepen our students’ understanding of world religions The celebration of Catholic holy days and sacramental preparation are part of the Catholic religion program.
Through the Living the Legacy (LTL) service projects, FXW students and families engage in meaningful service opportunities throughout Chicago. Service comes in many forms including serving hot meals, cleaning up parks and beaches, and more.
Over the years, FXW has developed nearly 40 partnerships with organizations across the city with nearly 250 service projects logged. FXW’s robust commitment to service included partnering with Big Shoulders Fund throughout the year, Grade 1 students visiting with and entertaining the residents of Little Sisters of the Poor St. Mary’s Home, and a day of service where our Grade 8 students volunteered at Greater Chicago Food Depository, Cradles to Crayons and Nourishing Hope.
Partnering with Red Cross during spirit week to provide victims of the California wildfires hundreds of messages of hope and an optional schoolwide $1 collection.
Grade 3 partnering with veterans organization Honor Flight Chicago
Grade 1 singing and coloring with clients of Little Brothers—Friends of the Elderly and St. Mary’s Home
A staff service event at Misericordia bakery during the holidays.
Partnered with nearly 40 organizations and completed more than 2,800 service hours.

A Community of Faith—As a Catholic school and little ‘c’ catholic school, how we welcome students and families to our community.
Purposefully Diverse and Intentionally
Inclusive—The practices, programs, and school policies we follow so all students and families feel they belong at FXW.
Preparing Thinkers and Leaders—The teaching strategies and approaches to engage students in learning, encouraging and developing higher level thinking and application of knowledge.
Motivated by faith to serve—FXW’s service projects are the living expression of our faith and living the Gospel message ‘for others’.
The 2024-2025 school year marked the introduction and reintroduction of two important initiatives led by Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Terri Jackson that support our Diversity and Inclusion Charism. This was in addition to creating a student-created Land Acknowledgment that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the land.
The first was a new student leadership group called JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion). This group consisted of 30 students across Grades 6-8 who came together monthly to take part in student SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) where they learned about multiple identities and the role they play in cultivating and maintaining a culture of belonging. This group of students serves as a think tank and a way to ensure that students’ voices are heard and considered when changing and implementing policies, programs, and procedures.
The students developed the following Mission Statement: JEDI is committed to fostering a school environment where every student feels valued, respected, and included. Through education, collaboration, and action, we aim to celebrate our differences, promote equity, and cultivate a community where all are heard and considered. We strive to be leaders who stand up for justice, embrace empathy, and work together to ensure that every member of our school has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
In addition, JEDI members created a set of Belief Statements that include:
We believe that diversity is our strength.
We believe in the power of inclusion.
We believe in standing up for justice.
We believe in the importance of education and awareness.
We believe in collaboration and teamwork.
We believe in the value of listening.
We believe that leadership means action.
We believe in creating spaces for everyone to thrive.
We believe that change starts with us.
We believe that growth is continuous.
Affinity groups were reintroduced to the FXW community during the 2024-2025 school year. Students at OSP and HNC, parents/caregivers, and staff signed up to meet with other members of the FXW community with whom they share a common identity or experience (e.g. race/ethnicity, religion). Affinity groups offer immense benefits and serve our Mission and Charisms by offering support, fostering positive self-identity, and building community.
One of the highlights of the year for our Students of Color affinity group, which is open to all students, was attending the annual Young Men of Color Symposium and Young Women of Color Symposium where they were able to connect with hundreds of students of color from Chicagoland area independent schools. Together, they attended workshops, networked, and received inspirational messages from keynote speakers. All affinity groups are facilitated by FXW faculty and staff members.
In November, 2024, the FXW community celebrated and honored Native American Heritage Month. During our assembly, students from Ms. Watson’s Grade 7 social studies class presented Land Acknowledgments that they submitted to be adopted as FXW’s official Land Acknowledgement. Our community selected to adopt Rima Eldam’s Land Acknowledgment, and also combined it with a portion of Joseph Junkovic’s submission. Combined, their words (seen below) have become FXW’s official Land Acknowledgement which is proudly shared on FXW’s web site.
We acknowledge that the land we gather on today, where The Frances Xavier Warde School stands in Chicago, Illinois, was once the homeland of many Native nations. These include the Council of the Three Fires-the Ojibwe, Odawa (Ottawa), and Potawatomi peoples-along with the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, and many other tribes who have lived here for thousands of years. These nations called this land by names in their own languages, which held deep meaning connected to nature, water, and community. Chicago itself comes from the Miami and Potawatomi word “Shikaakwa,” meaning “wild garlic” or “onion.” The rivers and lakes around us were once places of trade, gatherings, and ceremonies that connected different tribes. When European settlers arrived, they claimed this land and began to push Native people away, taking resources and building cities. This colonialism caused a lot of harm, forcing tribes to leave their homelands and making it harder for them to keep their culture and traditions alive. But Indigenous people have never left. They have fought to keep their connections to this land, and many continue to live in Chicago and all over Illinois. Acknowledging this helps us remember that we are here because of their history, strength, and resilience. As a Catholic institution, the FXW community understands that it is our responsibility to be at the forefront of equity, justice, and social accountability. We understand our responsibility to continue to teach the culture, heritage, past and present realities of Indigenous people, and to affirm the proper historical context of all tribal nations.
We empower children and families to reach for and achieve their dreams by providing over $2 million in need-based assistance. Average grant for the 2024–2025 school year is $11,700.

The Frances Xavier Warde School believes in educating students both inside and outside of the classroom. During the 2024-2025 school year, we fielded cross country, flag football and girls volleyball during the fall and sent two cross country athletes—Declan Kennedy and Kalea Lau—to the IESA State Championship Meet.
The FXW basketball program enjoyed another stellar campaign with Grade 8 Boys and Girls Varsity reaching the CCYL title game, and the Grade 8 Boys team winning the CCYL with a perfect 17-0 record including playoffs, Additionally, the Grade 8 Girls Varsity won the LMAS “Cooler by the Lake” tournament, and Grade 8 Boys Varsity reached the IESA regional final.
In the spring, FXW sent six athletes to the Class 3A IESA State Track & Field Championship Meet with five individuals/ relay teams taking home medals. Desiree Smith finished in second place in the 200M race, and the girls 4x200M relay team (Elsa Bove, Ivie Ehimwenman, Maya Goliak, and Desiree Smith) won a second consecutive state championship and again set a new state record! FXW also began offering girls volleyball in the spring and had 103 athletes across 10 teams participate. The Grade 8 White team went 11-0 to complete an undefeated season and capture the St. Viator league title.
FXW’s co-curricular programs are designed to provide students with a safe and stimulating environment in which to learn, play, and be active. From athletics to fine arts, students participate and compete in activities that nurture and expand their personal interests. FXW’s commitment to each child’s well-being is fulfilled when their mind, body, and spirit work together. Programs offered during this the year included debate team, Extended Day Program, Mandarin, LEGO Robotics, Scholastic Bowl and calculus.
The FXW experience stands apart in Chicago, sustained by the strength and commitment of our families. Each year, tuition covers only part of the actual cost of educating a child, and the gap is bridged through community giving. This approach ensures the socio-economic diversity that has been central to our founders’ vision, and it enriches not only our students but also the cultural and educational fabric of our city. Annual support for the FXW Fund and participation in the Gala are vital in keeping our programs dynamic and our facilities strong. This year, our community raised more than $546,000 for the FXW Fund and over $940,000 through the Gala.
When families invest in FXW, they are directly shaping their child’s journey of growth and achievement. The generosity of our community fuels innovative teaching, robust academic programs, and meaningful opportunities that empower students to thrive today and prepare for tomorrow. Year after year, the success of our fundraising efforts reflects the commitment of families who believe in the FXW promise: that an investment here extends far beyond the classroom, equipping students with the confidence, curiosity, and compassion to excel in high school, college, and throughout their lives.
The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) at FXW is a parent-run organization dedicated to supporting the school’s Mission and fostering a strong community. PAC collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and families to include, celebrate, and highlight the diverse FXW community. PAC coordinates numerous events and initiatives throughout the school year. Room and Grade Level Parents help organize classroom events, support families during significant life events, and act as liaisons between parents and the school. Committees like Spirit Wear and Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week focus on celebrating the FXW community. PAC also hosts popular events such as the Uniform Swap, Grandparents & Special Friends Day, Book Fair, Mardi Gras, Book Swap, and Mother’s Day Luncheon. These activities provide opportunities for parents to engage, volunteer, and strengthen the FXW community.
We extend an especially heartfelt expression of gratitude to PAC and our entire community for donating over $114,000 to our holiday and end-of-year gift efforts for faculty and staff. These generous contributions bring immense joy and appreciation to our faculty and staff.
