2019 THE BANK BOOK

TO END FOOD INSECURITY OF ALL FORMS IN SINGAPORE

VISION MISSION

TO BE THE PREVAILING CENTRALISED COORDINATING ORGANISATION FOR ALL FOOD DONATIONS IN SINGAPORE

CHIEF FOOD OFFICERS BITES

Dear All,

COVID-19. CIRCUIT BREAKER. SOCIAL DISTANCING. practically unheard of previously dominate the headlines in 2020.

And we could use them as the excuse for our tardiness in the printing of Bank Book 2019. When someone picks up this book in 2025, they can reflect on the peace of 2019 before the chaos of 2020,

We are witnessing an unprecedented moment in time and are grateful to be riding in the eye of the storm. We are thankful for the opportunity to provide such a vital service to the community and to have the stories to tell.

To all who have… …showered us with the courage to hanker on …supported us with money and food (and all else) …blessed us with their effort, love and time …edged us on in the toughest of moments …and shown unwavering belief in our mission…

…we would like to say, “A BIG THANK YOU”.

To our tiny army of full-time Foodbankers, we will like to salute you for the dedication that you have shown. We have never been more proud of the work that you have achieved as a team. We owe all the accomplishments in this book to all of you.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Our vision has never looked clearer and our conviction never stronger. Food insecurity must end.

Let The Feeding Continue,

Our regular food distribution programme, Joy In Every Bundle, aims to supplement the food donations we provide to our beneficiaries through door-to-door distribution of food bundles.

With some feedback provided by our beneficiary centres and social workers, we reviewed our previous set of food bundles that included rice and oil, which are less useful items to a large group of our beneficiaries who are seniors and do not cook at home.

We implemented a new bundle set which includes items that are easy and convenient to whip up. It contains items like instant cereal and bread with spread.

We believe that a better life starts with eating better. Besides filling tummies, we want our beneficiaries to receive healthy and nutritious food so they can perform better at work or school, and in turn create better lives for themselves.

In 2019, we organised 173 food bundle activities with donors who sponsored close to 37,600 bundles and assisted with packing and interacting with various beneficiary groups during the door-to-door distribution.

If you would like to partner with us to reach out to the beneficiaries, we are able to organise a fuss-free activity, where your team can select your target beneficiary group and even customise your bundle (with add-on household items such as toilet paper, toothpaste and cleaning products).

JOY IN EVERY BUNDLE THE FOODBANK SINGAPORE 10

In 2017, we started a collection at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre as we wanted to find out the extent of food wastage due to cosmetic filtering and selection of fresh produce. After a year’s worth of tracking as well as several collections, we started our regular Fresh Food Truck Project initiative and scheduled collections, twice a month, to salvage the “ugly” fruits and vegetables.

Over 30 sessions, The Food Bank Singapore collected rejected fruits and vegetables which were still good for consumption from stalls at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre and redistributed to our beneficiaries.

A total of 96.2 tonnes of fresh produce were salvaged and our beneficiaries recieved these healthier options of food donations.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019 FRESH FOOD TRUCK 11

The Food Bank Singapore serves beneficiaries all year round. While food is a basic necessity, many are still unable to afford meals that are sustainable are nutritious.

Food drives are not only a great way to generate donations to ensure a steady supply of food, they also help raise awareness on food insecurity and food wastage in Singapore.

Donations from food drives will first come to The Food Bank Singapore’s warehouse where volunteers will help to sort, do a quality check and inventorise the items. An inventory list is then sent to member beneficiaries where they can submit their requests. Items are then allocated, packed and delivered to our beneficiaries.

ANYONE CAN HOST A FOOD DRIVE

The most important thing is that you plan and manage your drive in a way that is fun, convenient, and meaningful for you!

HOST A FOOD DRIVE THE FOOD BANK SINGAPORE 12

Volunteering at the The Food Bank Singapore was an eye-opening experience for me as I witnessed the amount of food wastage generated in Singapore. The most memorable activity during my volunteering stint was going to the wholesaler to collect food donations from sellers and then redistributing them to those in need. It was a meaningful time where I learnt the importance of not wasting food and to never treat our food supply for granted.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019 VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIAL 13

From June to September 2019, we partnered with Geneco in a campaign series known as the Geneco #ChangeMakersSG, which celebrates and highlights local companies that make the effort to bring about a real change in our society and initiatives for a better, more sustainable Singapore.

Through several roadshows at various shopping malls and a partnership video, we shared how individuals can contribute! Geneco sponsored meals and interacted with over 100 seniors during the Feed The City event at Plentyfull Restaurant.

Over a week in March 2019, we partnered with Parkway Parade to build a more sustainable future, by encouraging mall patrons to make greener choices with their waste items. For every 5kg of non-perishable food items that were donated, donors would enjoy mall vouchers and a sure-win lucky dip.

TOWARDS A ZERO WASTE NATION THE FOOD BANK SINGAPORE 14

Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) designated 2019 as the Year Towards Zero Waste.

Compass One became the first mall to officially pledge support for the Food Wastage Reduction and Fight Hunger movement.

The official launch on April 16 was graced by guest-of-honour, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources.

Over the two-week long campaign, Compass One mall tenants were encouraged to donate excess unsold cooked food that was suitable for

The Food Bank Singapore’s Food Rescue programme.

The donation initiative recieved support from Kopitiam, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Soup Resturant, Ichiban Sushi, and Hong Kong Sheng Kee Pau.

TANGOTAB APP LAUNCH AND LARGEST FEED THE CITY

On April 13, The Food Bank Singapore organised the inaugural Feed the City event for 1,000 people in need from its beneficiary members.

Held at City Developments Limited’s (CDL) City Square Mall from 10am to 4pm, the community engagement event was complemented with activities such as cooking demonstrations, booths on sustainability efforts, and talks on food insecurity and food waste issues.

The event also marked the launch of social impact app, TangoTab, in Singapore. Every time a diner checks in to a partner establishment on the app, TangoTab makes a donation to FBSG to feed a hungry person.

Through TangoTab, we hope to encourage consumers and F&B business owners to take action and support the movement to reduce food insecurity in Singapore.

FEED THE CITY WEEK WITH TANGOTAB & SHANGRI-LA GROUP

In observance of World Food Day, The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) and social impact app, TangoTab teamed up to organise the first Feed the City Week from 14 – 17 October 2019. Apart from providing meals for people-in-need at five individual dining events, Feed the City Week also helped to raise awareness in an effort to end food insecurity in Singapore. Dining events were held at the four hotels under Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts in Singapore - Shangri-La Hotel, Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Hotel Jen Tanglin and Hotel Jen Orchardgateway.

“Through Shangri-La’s collaboration with FBSG, we are combining our spirit of hospitality, the enthusiasm of our hotel volunteers, and the expertise of the food bank to extend a memorable experience to the participants during Feed the City week.”

-Dora Tan, Assistant Area Director Corporate Communications (Singapore), Shangri-La Group

Along with FBSG, hotel staff organised various interactive activities including health tips with chefs, outdoor activities for children, a karaoke session, and a cookie decoration session.

More than 400 special guests from Faith Acts, Fei Yue Family Service Centre, and Yishun Student Care were a part of this week of activities.

THE FOOD PANTRY

2.0

On October 16, The Food Bank Singapore officially launched The Food Pantry 2.0, an automated version of our previous physical food pantry space at Sims Avenue. In partnership with KALMS SG and Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee, which provided the technology and space respectively, our very first vending machines serve as a platform to dispense emergency food aid 24/7, to those in need.

Through the Food Bank cards issued to them, each beneficiary (identified by social service agencies) in Toa Payoh, is able to redeem food 25 times per month.

“We always had plans to re-open The Food Pantry because we genuinely felt there was a gap to fill. Not only is there a ready lower income clientele sourcing for very low-cost food, but more importantly, The Food Pantry always has a role to dish out free emergency food aid,” said Nichol Ng, Chief Food Officer of FBSG.

With bigger plans to roll out vending machines dispensing cooked meals, we hope beneficiaries will be able to receive both tasty and nutritious meals at any time of the day.

Over 5,000 mooncakes were donated by Cocoba Pte Ltd and The American Club Singapore. Our beneficiaries were able to celebrate and enjoy a sweet treat together with us!

We accept individually packaged mooncakes with at least 1 month of shelf life!

NTUC FAIRPRICE FOOD DRIVE

(CNY, Hari Raya, Deepavali and World Food Day)

Throughout 2019, we partnered with NTUC FairPrice Co-Operative to host food collection points at 25 of their outlets during every Festive Season (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and World Food Day). The month-long Food Collection Drives enabled the general public to donate their excess food items at their convenience and we were able to receive 1467.85kg of donations!

FESTIVE COLLABORATIONS THE FOOD BANK SINGAPORE 20

The Giving Week movement from December 1 to 7 celebrated the spirit of giving and sought to make giving a part of our way of life, from corporate to non-profits and individuals.

Together with Unlisted Collection, $1 was donated to The Food Bank Singapore for every bottle of wine purchased by customers at Unlisted Collection's restaurants.

PLAIN VANILLA CHRISTMAS CHARITY BAKE SALE

Plain Vanilla Bakery and their community of creative food personalities compiled their first-ever recipe collection, inspired by the Christmas carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.

A series of Bake Sales took place at their Tiong Bahru flagship store in the month leading up to Christmas where proceeds were donated to The Food Bank Singapore.

IN-DEPTH

INSECURITY RESEARCH RESULTS

Understanding our marginalised, food-insecure population is central to The Food Bank Singapore’s (FBSG) goal of eliminating food insecurity of all forms in Singapore by 2025.

Results of the 2018 paper “Hunger in a food lover's paradise: Understanding food insecurity in Singapore” revealed higher than expected levels of food insecurity across a broader segment of society.

In collaboration with Singapore Management University’s Lien Centre Research for Social Innovation, FBSG has allocated funds to further this research which can potentially offer a unique perspective of this global issue.

This island-wide research aims to understand the underlying causes of food insecurity, its consequences and impact on the individual, household spending and dietary habits, and the types of support available to these groups.

Hunger in a Food Lover’s Paradise

This follow-up investigation encompasses a larger sample size of 1,200 people and enters Phase 3 in October 2020. The quantitative and qualitative results from Phase 1 and 2 will be synthesised, and the findings will be evaluated by food support networks in Singapore to give a fresh perspective on eliminating food insecurity in Singapore.

FOOD PANTRY 2.0 PHASE 2

HOT MEALS VENDING & CENTRAL KITCHEN

Residents of Toa Payoh can look forward to affordable and healthy meals as The Food Pantry 2.0, in collaboration with Philips Foundation, moves into its second phase to provide hot and nourishing meals for them 24/7.

The Food Bank Singapore will invest in developing a central kitchen where the food can be prepared, cooked and blast frozen.

The meals will be prepared in complicance to the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines to ensure food safety. Additionally, we will be working with Singapore Heart Foundation, and renowned Chef Christophe Megel, to ensure that the meals are healthy and tasty.

The Philips Foundation, will be sponsoring the first cooked meal vending machine in Toa Payoh.

UPCOMING 2020 THE FOOD BANK SINGAPORE 26

VIRTUAL FOOD BANKING

The Food Bank Singapore, in collaboration with GovTech, DBS and Microsoft, is proud to announce the development of the first nationwide online food donation platform.

Expected to launch by the end of 2020, the virtual food banking platform aims to streamline the food donation process by connecting donors, social service agencies, food support organisations, and logistics providers via a single platform.

This will remove the need for extra handling, reduce spoilage and ensure that fresh food reaches those in need quicker.

Through the virtual food banking platform, greater coordination and targeting of food support will be made possible, as food support organisations can submit requests to donors directly.

Under served food-insecure segments can indicate their dietary needs and preferences to their supporting food organisation, who will consolidate and submit a donation request via the platform.

More relevant food matching will also result in a reduction of food waste - one of the largest waste streams in Singapore.

VIRTUAL FOODBANKING ALLOWS DONATIONS TO BE SENT DIRECTLY TO PEOPLE
