Here are further reasons you need to consider if you want to have a lively, glowy skin.

Residual Buildup:

Even though a face wash is useful for dirt buildup, it is not as effective at removing the germs that are deeper in your skin. Think about what you are exposed to on a daily basis: pollution, car exhaust, smoke, sweat, and even dirty surfaces. Hence, you need a scrub that penetrates through the deeper surfaces to purify your skin against the accumulation of dirt that could impair your otherwise perfect complexion.

Almost everyone is prone to stubborn acnes and breakout, but you can bug them off with face scrubs that contain anti-acne weapons, like salicylic acid. This ingredient can make acne breakouts disappear quickly, enhancing the texture of your skin.

Exfoliating Beads:

Face scrubs contain something more effectual than any other cleanser – exfoliating beads. These tiny structures provide a deep clean and sensational rejuvenation, offering a stunning experience after a long, tiring day.

The feeling you experience when these beads hit your skin is extraordinary – there’s nothing quite like it.

Anti-Aging Properties:

A proper skincare routine can fight off agerelated issues and delay the appearance of fine lines, undereye bags, and neck

wrinkles. However, using face scrubs on daily basis can put you at risk of aggravating your skin. We recommend that you use the face scrub 2-3 times a week.

Do It Yourself Homemade Natural Face Masks Yogurt Face Mask

Rich in vitamins and minerals, both oranges and aloe vera can nourish your skin with essential nutrients that you may not find otherwise. Mix them with yogurt and see those persistent pores tighten apart.

How To Use It: Combine yogurt, two tablespoons of orange juice, and one tablespoon of aloe vera.

Apply the mixture on your face and leave it for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Oatmeal Face Pack

If you often get acne, cereals will do wonders on your face! The pasta can be so sticky but it will absorb a lot of excess oil from the skin pores.

How To Use It: In a mixer, blend the oatmeal with hot water until forms a paste.

Set the paste aside for several minutes.

Add one tablespoon of honey, yogurt, and one egg white to the paste and mix it well.

Apply a thin layer of this mixture and leave it for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Strawberry Face Mask

Rich in salicylic, strawberries can remove dead cells from the skin and reduce puffiness and dark circles beneath the eyes.

How To Use It: In a bowl, mash raw strawberries until they form a smooth cream.

Add one tablespoon of olive oil and two teaspoons of honey to reduce puffiness and inflammation.

Apply this paste to your face and rinse well after it gets dry.

Sea Salt Face Scrub

Winter shows no mercy when it comes to our skin. Yet, there are many ingredients that can slough away dry skin and provide a smooth appearance.

How To Use It: In a bowl, combine 2 tablespoons ground oatmeal, 1 teaspoon water, ½ teaspoon olive oil, ½ teaspoon honey, and ¼ teaspoon sea salt.

Slather it on your face and use your fingertips to rub it around gently in circular motions.

Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

TIP

When it comes to choosing essential oil scents, some oils are more masculine, such as oakmoss, cypress, lavender, bergamot, vetiver, cedar, lime, neroli, sandalwood, orange, thyme, and lemon balm.

The Fitness and Lifestyle team had an opportunity to speak with Sherif Barakat, the first Egyptian man to hold a Vice President title of Samsung Global, to gain an insight into the elements that leverage telecommunication services and technological innovations in the MENA region.

Prior to joining Samsung, Barakat worked for several multinational companies like Nokia, Motorola, and Siemens for more than 18 years in General Management positions, where he built deep roots in technology, Internet, and telecommunication fields. He received a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from The American University in Cairo with highest honors and completed the Global Talented Leaders Program from IMD School of Business in Helsinki, Finland. What got you interested in the smartphone and technology industrIES?

I am one of the very early men who got the golden opportunity to probe in the smartphone and technology arenas in the MENA Region… and it’s totally a coincidence. After completing my degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, I received a phone call from a French Guy, who asked me to join his team as a Project Manager. This is how both the mobile industry and global system for mobile communications intrigued and enthused me to investigate innovative ideas in the market through working in a number of prominent companies including Alcatel, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, and Siemens. One of the most alluring aspects of working in the technology field is the ability to witness the constant unrivaled progress, that doesn’t merely impress mankind, but also suggests further impressive innovations.

For example, it took an entire century for railways and trains to reach 80% of human beings around the world, 50 years for people to access cars, and 25 years for people to own computers. Similarly, it took 6 years for people to own mobile phones, which means that the speed of penetration of the mobile industry is one of the fastest growing trends worldwide. For this reason, I am pleased to be part of this growing industry that constantly redefines communication.

From your long journey in this field, what are the keys behind SAMSUNG’S rapid growth?

The adoption of technology in the Arab World in general and Egypt in particular is one of the highest in the world. With over 30 million accounts, Egypt is ranked first among the Arab region countries that use Facebook, and one of the top countries worldwide in terms of account per capita. These figures strongly imply the prevalence of technology in Egypt and its influence on all aspects of our lives. What we are truly missing here is the emergence of technology in today’s society, by means of becoming inventors instead of mere users. Unfortunately, the Arab World offers a minimal contribution to the world of technology in comparison to the rest of the world. Hence, we should direct our focus into developing new creative inventions… something like the next Facebook or Uber!

In your opinion, why is Egypt still incapable of launching competitive local smartphones, and how to equip the coming generations to stay ahead of technological changes?

To be honest, I believe that telecommunication may become an economic powerhouse if we place a strong emphasis on it. For instance, Vietnam exports about 40-50billion dollars worth of hardware technology every year. Egypt, on the other hand, barely exports 5% of this figure. This opens an opportunity to come up with a new innovative concept that hasn’t

been invented yet. Instead of spending excessive time on aspects that are already well invented – such as hardware – we should focus on other features that are still in the process of development, such as smart solutions and software. Besides, we must ensure that the entire country contributes in this initiative - financially, managerially, and educationally – to produce world-class services. If done now and aggressively right, this step can have a drastic impact on our economy.

Samsung has gained high prevalence in the market during the past five years. What are the main elements behind this success?

My five years of experience at Samsung has taught me a lot about the Korean culture, which are summarized as follows: discipline, hierarchy, commitment, and innovation. I remember back when I was in Korea, our meetings used to start at 6 a.m. and end at 11 p.m., and the process went on for days.

They put their career before family, which is one of the key elements of excellence and success. Proudly, Samsung follows the same fundamentals.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was regarded as a real danger to the safety of buyers.

How did Samsung’s team and management handle this crisis?

We understand that mistakes happen and we understand that big companies face similar situations. However, our reaction to this incident is part of our company’s policy.

First, we accepted the fact that there is an issue. Second, we implemented a major replacement program, where we replaced millions of mobile phones around the globe.

The decision was costly, yet we believe that customer satisfaction comes first. Even when we had the slightest doubt about the performance of one of our batteries and similar features, we applied new measures to make sure our customers are safe. After thorough investigations, our president announced that the mistake appeared to be part of the third party battery suppliers; however, we executed a strict quality assurance process composed of eight new procedures to ensure that it never happens again.

It seems that Samsung and Qualcomm are investing towards connected cars. to what extent can this initiative influence our lives?

Samsung constantly develops new partnerships with prominent companies to provide top-notch services and improve people’s lives. Regarding connected car February 2017 | 31

technology, we believe that the automobile industry necessitates technological innovations and advancements to facilitate people’s lives. I was astonished to find numerous car manufacturers in a conference that took place in Las Vegas this year.

So it looks like the technology of cars, telecommunications, and IT are coming closer together.

It is not only capable of coping, but leading as well. We are small societies, where half of our population is under the age of 30.

And despite all negative aspects about the education system in Egypt, we still excel in different realms on local and international level. We can definitely lead if we impose a new plan to become a hub of software improvements and solutions.

How did the current economical turmoil affect consumer behavior and what type of precautions did Samsung take to ensure its effectual presence in the market?

Aside of your impressive experience in the technology field, what is your hobby or interest?

With all the economic uncertainty that took place ever since the 25th of January revolution, Samsung resumed its work and innovations against all odds. In 2013, Samsung opened its first television factory in Egypt. Two years later, we dominated both the television and mobile phone markets. It goes without saying that the devaluation of the Egyptian pound had a negative impact on the market, yet we believe that the normal consumer purchase will go back to its previous rates this year.

Do you think that the region is capable of coping with the rapid global digital development?

Sports. I believe that sport resembles my career atmosphere. Both fields require coordination, alignment, understanding, and even some misunderstanding; but all are measured by goals and challenges. It takes many years of dedication and hard work to enjoy a one-minute feeling of victory.

Additionally, I enjoy reading books and scientific researches. It is impossible to build a powerful nation without raising generations that are keen to learn about the up-to-date advancements.

What is your source of inspiration?

Honestly speaking, my source of inspiration varies with time. Currently, my main source of inspiration is Renaissance art. I am totally fond of medieval art; it has a huge impact

on my soul and greatly influences my mind.

Caravaggio is my all-time favorite painter.

Education vs Skills; which one had a major impact on your career journey?

Both of them are very imperative. Education is an ongoing process, regardless of how well-educated you are. There are always new books to read, new researches to learn about, new technologies that come to light, and new courses to enrich my knowledge. In short, we learn until we die. Skills go hand in hand with education, and they are taught by experience. I personally like to be around intelligent people and learn from their smart attitude.

Being the Founder of Entaleq, what advice would you give someone who wants to start a business?

One of Samsung’s visions is to become the leading providers of technology and leadership in the region. Subsequently, we founded Entaleq for the young avid individuals to teach them how to write an application, a service for mobiles, or even TVs, and then put it in Samsung store to turn it into a business and generate revenue.

We are currently running the fourth version of Entaleq as part Samsung’s dedication towards inspiring new generations to turn their creative ideas into real businesses.

I guess many of us have read that famous quote before, but have you really stopped to understand the real meaning of creating ourselves and how to do that, or did you read it somewhere and disregard it?

“Life is about creating yourself” is not a principle everyone subscribes to and acts upon. There are many people who believe they have been born with certain personalities that shaped who they are and what they will become. You will find them saying things like “there is nothing I can do about my anger problem. It is genetic… I was born this way.” Some people, on the other hand, allow others to define who they are and what they can and cannot do. They may even give others the power to define their future based on the past’s series of accomplishments and failures. They don’t believe

they have any control over who they become and what happens in their life. In other words, they don’t really believe they have the ability to create themselves or shape their future.

Don’t you think that the above limited perceptions can constrain our lives?

Think about this way; why would you ever allow someone or a previous tough experience to define who you are and shape your future?

After years of coaching people, I can assure one thing; we have more control than we may think and the question we must always ask ourselves is, are we taking advantage of our ability to create ourselves?

Let me share with you steps to start your selfcreation journey…

1. Self Discovery When was the last time you asked yourself the following questions; am I really happy with what I am doing? What is my life purpose? What am I supposed to be doing?

What am I really interested in? What are my unique skills and what can I contribute to my everyday lifestyle?

The second you answer the above questions very honestly with yourself, you will see that side and angle of your life that you may have never seen before.

Identify your end goal and draw a road map; then start working your way there by hitting the key objectives you’ve identified.

Stop wasting your energy trying to explain or convince everyone around you of your point. Instead, surround yourself with positive people who can always assure that you deserve to be happy.

3. Watch out for Your Limiting Beliefs Limiting thoughts is a common barrier that holds you back from success. If you plan to create yourself, then there is no reason to decide your future based on traits that you inherited. There is no reason to have any doubts about what you are currently capable of based on what you have accomplished in the past. It’s a new start here, so believe in yourself and believe that you can and will!

4. Move Forward with Confidence Be the person you want to be and be that person with confidence. Others will begin to recognize you for how you want to be seen. Dedicate yourself to your journey and this means taking actions everyday that will move you in the right direction. Move with confidence and focus. Nothing in life can stop you from being the person that you have decided to be!

We have the ability to find out and take control of who we want to become. Believe that you are more than capable of achieving it, and then do everything you know you should to make that vision a reality.

A Journey Towards

the Divine Higher Self By: Sandra Shama Kaur

So 2017 is here and like every other year, we feel a propelling energy in the air that asks us to review the past year and collect the lessons and wishes for the year ahead. This year, I went on a Self Exploration Journey at Quinta Do Rajo Residence in Portugal with Shiv Charan Singh and Satya Kaur. The 6 –day week was so transformational that I like to call it the ‘point of no return’ in that I cannot imagine going back to being my Old Self after meeting my Higher Self. So I decided to share some of the teachings here, which may inspire you to create a new set of resolutions to help you honor your Higher Self and carry you forward in 2017.

Whenever we come up with New Year resolutions, we are quick to list the most obvious wishes - a bigger house, a greater car, a better paying job, a fitter body, a healthier diet, and more money to travel, shop, and indulge in other pleasures.

Yet, what is easy to miss is the promise that we want to make with our higher self. Since we live in a highly intellectual and scientific society, it is not easy to understand what it really means when we say higher self?

We know that our body is made up of the skeleton and muscles and that the heart pumps blood to all the major organs such as the lungs to allow us to breathe and the stomach to allow us to digest food. But the higher self, now that is a topic that science has little say about. So how can we understand it?

We know that the self is intangible and it can neither be measured under a microscope nor with a ruler. So how can we feel its existence?

And what distracts us from feeling its existence?

You might be ready for the answer but the thing is, the answer to this question has to come from your own personal experience. So this year, my invitation to you is to make the Self as your project and begin to get to know who is the Self?

What is its purpose? What are its gifts? And what are the factors that stand in the way of your greatness? So great that our Creator himself would be proud to see it in his own image?

Imagine that you are standing on an island and can see the next island that you want to be standing on, but there is a gap between both islands. The question is, what kind of excuses are holding you back from moving ahead to the next milestone?

The first step to becoming more aware of

this gap is to recognize the inner dialogue… the inner conversation… the excuses… that take place inside our heads every day. Sometimes we may hear things such as: I am afraid of not knowing what will happen.

I am afraid of what others may think/ say.

I am afraid of failure.

I am afraid of succeeding and having always to keep up with that standard of success.

I am afraid of losing control.

I am afraid of leaving my comfort zone.

I am afraid of being seen.

I have too many responsibilities.

I don’t have enough patience.

I don’t have enough discipline.

I don’t have enough time.

I don’t have enough creativity.

I don’t have enough skills.

I am not good enough.

The second step is to invert the dialogue and turn it around with a positive affirmation.

2. What am I worrying about today? How can I bring trust, love, and certainty into the moment?

The Third step is to monitor yourself, your

thoughts, your habits, and your inner dialogue and begin to recognize the rift that takes place between your higher Self and the Ego Self. We have all experienced this before, we recognize something about our selves, we vow to make a change and we succeed, but somewhere down the line the change becomes so automatic and mental that it loses the connection with the Self. Suddenly the positive affirmation or habit happens in response to a strong command from the Ego Self, which loses the sweetness and gentleness of the connection to the heart. So how do we know when we become disconnected from the self?

1. Our energy gets stuck below and becomes locked in the belly – we become hungry, sleepy, looking for pleasure, and indulging in nice things. We push away people to be alone.

2. Our energy gets stuck upwards in the head – we fantasize, dream, plan excessively, imagine, calculate, and rationalize.

3. Our energy gets stuck in the outer word – we are overly focused on all our responsibilities, promises, and commitments that we have made to others, as well as how much others depend on us.

So how can we apply a shift to our consciousness not only from the mind but also from the heart?

It is useful to recognize the moments where you feel connected to your higher self and the moments where you feel disconnected. Some

4. Did I experience any resistance today? Did someone say something that I resisted? Did something happen that I resisted?

5. When did I say I have to do something? Can I replace the “I have to” with “I want to?”

7. Did I synchronize my inhalation with the inwards movement of my Higher Self towards my heart and my exhalation with the exterior movement of my Higher Self towards the outer world?

8. Was there an opportunity where to flip the switch? Change the frequency?

9. Was I aware of my Self as I was working?

Doing? Or moving?

10. Did my self-defeating mantra come into play today?

The fourth step is to begin to micro-

manage your Self. We have all heard this term micro-management before. As the information and technology age are on the rise, we are bombarded with input twenty-four hours a day from our smart phones, computers, televisions, radio, advertisements, and so on. So it is easy to get lost in all the inputs and in our interaction with these inputs as we use them to make key decisions. Just like how we micro-manage our lives by having schedules and plans, we need to

make a firm mend to the higher self and begin also micro-managing this self so we can become extremely alert, awake, and sensitive. It is so easy to become the slave of our consumerist society, morning coffee, iPhone, or that app that takes away your temporary boredom…

What this article seeks to do is to invite you to make a new commitment to your self as a project so that you can have a conversation with your higher self and make a decision about what your really want in your life.

Asking this question over and over again, what do I really want in my life? Why am I doing this or that? What am I choosing today and does it honor my higher self?

The fifth Step is to put your vision on paper to crystallize the message. It does not matter whether you know how to draw or whether you call yourself an artist. This exercise is about self trust. Can you move beyond the voice of the inner critic and trust that your higher self is capable of expressing itself in shapes and colors? Can you let go of self-judgment and allow your pen to dance on paper?

The final step is to redesign your life to make room for everything that will make your heart sing. It is useful to list all the activities that you want to do and discuss them with a friend who can challenge you and really dig deep about their significance in your life.

To tie everything up, I invite you to build a conscious relationship with your heart center. To be able to feel your heart beating when you first wake up and before you sleep is one thing, but to be able to have such a profoundly deep and genuine connection with your heart that just by asking it a question, you hear the answer, that is something else. And this requires commitment, dedication, and daily training.

Soon he became one of the most prominent squash players of all time and dominated the scene on national and international tournaments. Today, Hawas revives his glory days by sharing his outstanding experience with a new generation of players. The Fitness and Lifestyle Magazine was pleased to have a great chat with Ahmed Hawas to gain an insight into his formidable career path as a banker and founder of two squash academies.

How did you get into playing Squash? What age were you when you first played?

I have always been interested in sports. I was six years old when I first started swimming.

Then one day, I came across some seniors on a squash court, and the game entirely got me! I joined the team at El Shams Club and have been practicing squash since then.

You took your passion to a new level. Why did you start two squash academies?

I wanted to pass on my extensive knowledge, passion, and expertise to younger generations with similar passion.

My over-two-decade experience in local and worldwide competitions gave me valuable knowledge and experience that could enthuse and enlighten other squash players to pave their roads to victory and stardom.

Hopefully, the academies will implement a holistic program to bring Egyptian players on top of the world game and guarantee elite performance to become a permanent one.

How often do you train and how long does it take to prepare for a worldwide tournament?

In general, I practice squash and general fitness workouts for three hours, twice a day to sustain my performance. Worldwide tournaments, on the other hand, demand more advanced and well-rounded routine for at least six months in order to practice drills and focus on the weak parts.

What would you say is the best thing about playing squash at professional level?

Squash has provided me with a golden opportunity to mingle with people all over the world and meet influential figures. It is also great to be a role model for younger generations. However, squash has made me prone to injuries, which did not merely hamper my performance for a while, but also had a significant effect on my social life.

What have been your career highs and lows?

I don’t particularly regard my tough times as low times, simply because every loss, injury, or disappointment is a lesson that challenges me to upshift my performance and get out of my comfort zone. Even when I encountered an injury that impeded my training and career, I thought of it as an opportunity that challenges me to push myself further.

Besides, there were certainly some surreal moments of victory, like winning the title of best squash player in 2015.

How do you manage your time between being a banker, coach, and squash player?

Being part of Bank Audi’s team – one of the most prominent banks in Egypt – has given me the privilege to perform exceptionally well in all aspects of life. They constantly enthuse me to pursue my goals and become a wellrounded person that can pretty much excel in different realms.

in your opinion, how can one lead a smart balanced life?

To truly attain success, you must live your life in balance and harmony. Work hard, stay focused, and be sharp. If you adopt these three disciplines in your life, you will unleash your true potential and fulfill your purposes in less time.

What is your source of inspiration?

My mother has been my greatest support throughout my life. It is impossible to overstate how important she has been in motivating me over the past three decades, during my falls and my highs. She taught me to never give up, always pursue my dreams, and to become the best at everything, especially my career path.

You've been through numerous challenges and injuries, who had a large impact on your life?

The one and the only one, Neveen Amr. She never fails to motivate me to push more.

Her presence in my life makes me endure difficulties, overcome challenges, and strive for success. It is beautiful how someone can turn your days into cherished memories.

to Boost Strength and Endurance If you are a runner, you need to be certain of one fact… variety in training is the spice of life!

If you work out regularly, you might fall into the habit of performing the same routine at the exact effort every time. This might trap you in your comfort zone and impede your performance with time, where your speed may not be difficult enough to challenge your body, yet to fast to develop endurance or count as a “recovery” run.

The reason behind this scenario is the fact that it takes only six to eight weeks for your nervous system, muscles, and other physiological systems to adapt to a running routine. Eventually, your running routine becomes easier and your fitness level lulls.

To maintain a healthy and challenging exercise regimen, it's essential to diversify your workouts with a mixture of activities to challenge your cardiovascular system and muscles in various ways. This will not only make a room for both strength-building and recovery, but will also decrease your chances of developing injuries.

Here are eight common running workouts for endurance runners that will help you enhance your running routine and maximize the benefits.

1. The Easy Run

Even though many people take this type of run for granted, running at an easy pace builds endurance, enhances proper body form, establishes routine and base mileage, and enables recovery. This particular type of run should make up about 65-80% of your mileage at a heart-rate zone 1 and 2. To measure your level, ask yaourself if you can keep a conversation going with proper pace and structure. If the answer is yes, you are running in that easy zone.

Sample Workouts

Workout: 6 miles at an easy, conversational pace. Avoid any fluctuations in speed.

Workout: 45 minutes at an easy pace. You are running for time and not distance, thus you are free to hit any mileage you desire within 45 minutes.

2. The Tempo Run

The tempo run is hard enough to push farther yet comfortable enough to sustain the effort.

The purpose of this run is to develop lactate threshold, which is the point at which the body transforms from its aerobic system to its anaerobic system and rapidly fatigues thereafter. This puts you in a situation where the higher your threshold at a specific pace, the longer you are able to maintain this pace and develop strength, speed, and endurance.

The exercise intensity represents 85-90% of your max heart-rate with possible few short sentences but not full conversation.

Sample Workouts

Workout: 40 minute run with 3 x 5 minutes at tempo pace, and a 3-minute recovery in between. Start with an easy warm up, then five-minute tempo intervals with three minutes of rest, for three times. Allow for time at the end to cool down.

Workout: 90 minute run with 3 x 15 minutes at tempo pace, and an 8-minute recovery in between. Longer tempo intervals will qualify you for a marathon.

Workout: 60 minute run with 3 x 8 minutes at a tempo pace, and a 4-minute recovery, including hill or inclination climbing.

3. The Progression Workout

Short Hill Repeats: 8 hill sprint repeats with light jog back down to rest, following a 3-mile easy run. This type of hill repeat will teach you how to attack shorter hills during a race.

Sustained Hill Repeats: 5 x half-mile hill climbs on a steady incline with easy run back down to rest. This is perfect when training for a hilly race.

5. The Interval Workout

Known as tough yet effective, interval runs are short intense efforts followed by a short rest period, usually with a set of distance and pace. Interval training can be anywhere from 100 meters to a mile or more, based on the purpose of training period of a runner. This particular workout is designed to challenge your anaerobic system or lactate threshold, and build speed and strength consequently.

Sample Workouts

Yasso 800s: 10 x 800 meters on the track with a light jog for the same amount of time it took you to run each 800 in between.

Workout: 2 x 1,000 meters with 2 minute rest periods + 2 x 800 meters with 90 second rest periods + 2 x 400 meters on the track with 60 second rest periods.

6. The Ladder Run

This marathon running style allows a progression is pace, where you can start slow and finish fast. This run trains you to run faster at the end of a race as well as incorporates both your aerobic and anaerobic systems without overtraining your body or subjecting you to fatigue and injury.

If running turns out to be your passion after all and want to upshift your performance, this Ladder Run game will do marvelous wonders.

This interval workout allows you to climb up, down, or both in distance with a short rest period in between each interval (about 90 seconds or a 400 meters jog). Mix it up with high-intensity running paces and distances and watch your legs get explosive.

Thirds Workout: 15 minutes at an easy pace, 15 minutes at a comfortably hard pace, 15 minutes at a hard pace.

Fast Finish Workout: 30 minutes at an easy pace, 10 minutes at a hard pace, 5 minutes all out. By sustaining an easy pace throughout most of the run until the last 15 minutes, you will practice how to push hard at the end of the race.

4. The Hill Workout

Unlike traditional speed routines, hill workout builds explosive power, speed, and strength in your tendons and joints. Running uphill and downhill together is imperative to a wellbalanced runner. Whether you go for hard, short sprints up/down a hill, or sustained, gradual hill; you will reap many benefits and reduce the risk of injury.

Up and Down: 400 meters x 2, 800 meters x 2, 1,600 meters, 800 meters x 2, 400 meters x 2, with a 400 meter light jog in between each interval.

Down: 1,600 meters x 2, 1,200 meters x 2, 800 meters x 2, 400 meters x 2, with a 400 meters light jog in between each interval.

7. The Fartlek Workout

Here, you can mingle fast running with slower running and even diverse the pace and distance of each interval. There are no rules other than incorporating various paces and distances in this routine.

Sample Workouts

Unstructured: 5-mile run with the final 4 miles consisting of Fartlek intervals.

Structured: 1-mile warm up + 3 miles, including four to six 5-minute surges each followed by a 2- to 3-minute period of easy running + 1-mile cool down.

8. The Long Run Workout

Long runs are probably the only time where you can unwind your senses and just run as far as you can go without any plans or obligations. While it is your chance to increase mileage and build endurance, you will push yourself into comfort zone with time. Yet, if you add a different element to your long runs, such as speed or progression, you will add more structure and benefits to your long run day. If you will join a competition soon, work on your weak running components.

Sample Workouts

Countdown Long Run Workout: Take the difference between your easy pace and race pace and divide that by the number mileage of your run. Increase your pace or “count down� by that set increment each mile, so that by the end of the run you have steady increased your pace from easy to race pace.

Mid - Morning Snack: Lean protein, fruit, and complex carbohydrate.

According to the recently published federal guidelines for physical activity, yes! An adult should engage in a minimum of 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity performed almost every day (e.g., 30 minutes a day, five days a week), a minimum of 60 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic exercise (e.g., 20 minutes a day, three days a week), or through a combination of vigorous and moderate intensity exercise. Playing tennis, depending on how skilled you are and whether you play doubles or singles, can qualify as moderate to moderately vigorous exercise. How long and often you play (e.g., three times/ week for 60 minutes/session) may allow you to satisfy the aerobic component. However, you also need resistance training two to three times per week to strengthen muscles and bones. A proper resistance program will probably help your tennis game and reduce the likelihood.

All fitness goals should begin with maintaining proper eating habits.

To tone your thighs, you should watch your eating habits and continue with the proper exercise routine. A great start to toning your thighs involves three things. First, balance your diet by eating a variety of foods to allow your body to obtain the necessary nutrients needed to work at its optimal capacity. Eat consistently to allow the body to maintain the necessary energy it needs to function throughout the day. Remember, food is energy, and if you plan to begin an exercise routine you need energy. Finally, perform cardiovascular activity.

Supplement the first two with a cardiovascular exercise routine that challenges the lower body. Some examples of good exercises are kickboxing, Tae-Bo, brisk walking, and jogging.

This depends on the type of treatment and extent of injury; whether it is a slight tear or complete rupture. Thus I leave the case to the doctor following your case, yet the most important thing about hiring a personal training is injury prevention. Make sure you warm up thoroughly with a low impact exercise such as the stationary bicycle; incorporate workouts with full range of motion and flexibility; start with low impact exercises such as walking and stepping up small steps before progressing; perform calf strengthening exercises in a slow controlled manner at first; stretch the calf muscles thoroughly after general warm up and after training sessions; always perform a general cardio cool down with light calf stretching after sessions; and place ice on the Achilles tendon after training sessions.

It is 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise! What you’re taking in is just as important as the abs series. My all-time favorite tummyflattening technique is the plank. You can do a moderate or full plank version and can add to the series by dropping your knees and tucking your foot to the side while still in a plank position. It is important to use correct form so your knees are under your shoulders, your navel is toward your spine, and your neck is relaxed and elongated.

Be consistent ... Twenty minutes really adds up when you’re doing it six days a week, all year-round; however, it doesn’t amount much if you’re only doing it a couple times a week.

Start with 20 minutes of something you love to do, and build on that. So if you feel like dancing, dance. If you’d like to try yoga, start there. The other key aspect is intensity. It’s important to make those 20 minutes count. Compound exercises that work upper body, lower body, and core simultaneously not only save time, but they send your calorie burn through the roof. If you’re pushing yourself, 20 minutes can actually be more effective than a longer, less intense workout.

Should children lift weights?

Kids lift weight all the time, and more than most adults. Think about how often a kid climbs up a tree or jungle gym. They are lifting their entire body weight. When they piggy back one another, they carry a friends’ entire body weight on their back whilst running. If your kid shows an interest in lifting weights, let him try lifting a light-weight – he probably just wants to copy your movements. If it’s too heavy, he just won’t lift it anyway – there is no way a kid will keep straining, they’re not motivated by ego like us oldies. A broomstick is a great substitute for a curious kid.

Generally speaking, people with celiac disease represent a very small percentage. According to an article published by The Egyptian Journal of Internal Medicine about celiac disease, “the estimated global prevalence of CD in the general population is 1%, with a statistical range of probability of 0.5–1.26% in the general population in Europe and the USA. In patients at risk, the prevalence is even higher: 3–6% in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients and up to 20% in first-degree relatives of celiac patients.”

Beyond Gluten Free It seems more and more gluten-free stocks are on the shelves these days. That’s good news for people with celiac disease, who should not consume foods with gluten, like wheat, barley, and rye. Yet paradoxically, most of the people who reach for gluten-free products don’t suffer from celiac disease or even sensitivity from wheat. While the reasons for this dilemma are not particularly clear yet, it seems that the focal point of this behavior is supported by the emergence of the gluten-free diet as a healthier form of diet. Truth is, gluten-free diets might not be really good for everyone!

Some people may be sensitive to gluten without having outright celiac disease these people tend to feel and function better on a diet with less or no gluten.

However, people who do not fall under these two categories basically set aside imperative nutrients. Gluten itself doesn’t provide special nutritional benefits; however, whole grains that happen to contain gluten, are rich in an array of minerals, vitamins, and fibers. These nutrients are very imperative for one’s health as it helps prevent a number of health problems, including heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Hence, if you eliminate whole grain, you might run the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Eliminating gluten requires adopting a whole new diet and budget! Most gluten-free foods are significantly more expensive than their conventional counterparts. Some of them are also high in saturated fats or low in nutritional value. So if you are planning to cut foods with gluten source, you’ve got to plan it smart. While if you are among people with celiac disease, you should fill your kitchen with natural foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products, and grains that doesn’t include gluten like quinoa.

Chicken and Leek Pie Yield: 4 servings Ingredients: 175g gluten-free flour 85g butter 50g cheddar, grated 1 tsp. coarse grain mustard For the Filling 500g skinless boneless chicken breasts, cut in chunks 25g butter 2 tbsp. sunflower oil 2 leek, thickly sliced 350ml chicken broth 1 tbsp. gluten-free flour 85g watercress, chopped 4 tbsp. fresh cream 1 tbsp. milk Directions: In a bowl, combine flour, a pinch of salt, butter, and cheese. Blend 2 tbsp. cold water with the mustard and mix well till it forms into dough. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook chicken chunks in hot butter for few minutes or until golden. Add the leeks and stir for 2 -3 minutes until softened. Add the broth and bring to boil, and then cover for 15 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200C. Transfer the chicken and leeks to a 1.2-liter pie dish with a slotted spoon and leave the stock in the pan.

Make a paste by mixing flour with 1 tbsp. cold water, and then thin it with 2 tbsp. stock. Add the mixture to the pan and stir on the heat non-stop until thickened. Take off the heat, stir in the watercress and cream, and pour over the chicken and leeks. Set aside to cool.

Roll out the pastry between 2 pieces of cling film until just larger than the dish. Remove the top piece of film and lift the pastry onto a rolling pin with the cling film underneath. Lay pastry-side down over the filling. Peel away the film, and then trim around the rim. Make a small hole in the center.

Brush the pastry with milk or egg and bake for 30 minutes until golden.

Sour-Sweet Baked Chicken Wings Yield: 3 servings Ingredients: 12 chicken wings or drumettes 3 carrots, sliced 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced 1 red bell pepper, sliced ¼ cup honey 1 tbsp. canola oil 2 tbsp. lemon juice 2 tbsp. green onion 1 tbsp. hot sauce 1 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. garlic, minced ½ tsp. sesame seeds Salt and pepper to taste Directions: For the sauce, combine honey and hot sauce in a small saucepan.

Add butter and stir till melt and remove from heat.

In a large bowl, marinate chicken wings with salt, pepper, garlic powder, lemon, and canola oil. On a sheet pan, place a grilling rack and coat with oil spray. Place the wings and broil for 20 minutes – turn the wings halfway through the cooking.

In a wide sauté pan, cook minced garlic in 2/3 of the sauce, and then add the carrots, bell peppers, and chicken wings. Stir the mixture until fully cooked or caramelized.

Transfer the wings and veggies in a platter, drizzle the remaining amount of sauce, and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

However, what kind of diet should one follow?

Do we have to cut carbs? Should we only eat clean? How do we start?

There are hundreds of diet books, some of which promise their audience a total transformation in only 30 days! You may choose one of them to follow, yet end up regaining the weight you lost and messing up with your metabolism. This can make you frustrated and hopeless.

Whether or not dieting is bad for you depends on the type of diet plan you're following and whether it is suitable for you. The popular and top-rated diets I am going to mention in this article ensure that you stay healthy while on the right path to weight loss, unlike the crazy fad or crash diets that restrict calories and nutrients to the point of starvation. In general, diet is very good for you as long as it suits you and your lifestyle, so let’s learn more about some of these top-rated diets: 68 | February 2017

If It Fits Your Macros (IIFYM) Diet: It's usually hashtagged as #IIFYM, and the concept is simple: You can eat any foods you want, as long as they fit within your daily caloric allowance and as long as you get the right balance of macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fat).

Of course, IIFYM diet allows people to indulge - a big perk if you have previously struggled with more restrictive diets. But it can still be too much food analysis-based or involve too much calculation for some people, making it hard to sustain in the long run. Plus, you may fall into the trap of enjoying the indulgence so much that you end up no longer tracking your macronutrients or calories.

Atkins Diet: This diet suggests that people and athletes take their calories mainly from protein and fat. It’s based on the assumption that, in the absence of carbohydrates, the body uses ketones produced from breaking down fat cells as an energy source.

It is hard, however, to do intense workouts when following this diet, because your glycogen stores are depleted and cannot be replenished with the lack of carbohydrates. The large amounts of fat in this diet give signals to your brain that your body is full even when it’s not getting all the needed nutrients. This is why you may lose weight, but you will also lose muscle mass.

On the bright side, however, recent researches show that the Atkins diet is one of the best methods for helping people control their insulin resistance. Eating too many refined or simple carbs overwhelms the body’s capacity to store glucose, causing insulin resistance and eventually Type 2 Diabetes. You might be surprised by how much carbs you can “get away with.” Atkins reduces carbs to an insulinsensitizing level automatically and permanently, significantly lowering your risk of developing diabetes.

The Atkins diet is about 70% fat, 25% protein, and only 5% carbs (preferably from leafy green vegetables).

Plant Based Diet: This diet focuses on eliminating the animal sources of food and eating only plants and seeds. This diet has the three essential macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates, and fat that makes it suitable for intense workouts.

Health advantages of a plant-based diet can be partly explained by the fact that vegetarian and vegan diets are richer in dietary fiber, higher in potassium and magnesium, folic acid, the antioxidant vitamins C and E, and the health-promoting phytochemicals. Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts all have protective benefits against major chronic diseases.

On the other hand, it may be difficult to complete your entire required protein intake using vegetables, fruits, and nuts, especially for athletes who require higher-than-average daily protein intake in order to build muscles. This is why, this diet may also lead to loss of muscle mass. It is also more difficult to get enough of nutrients such as B12, omega 3, iron, and zinc on this diet. Iron and B12 are important for transporting oxygen throughout the body, producing energy and maintaining healthy nervous and digestive systems. Iron deficiency is the world’s leading nutrition disorder, and vegans and vegetarians are at a higher risk of suffering from it. While only about 5% of meat eaters are B12-deficient, closer to 70 percent of vegetarians and more than 80% of vegans show signs of this deficiency.

In the end, the only person who might know your body as well as or better than you do, and whose opinion you may choose to trust, is your nutritionist. Before you start any serious dieting regimen, it's important to consult him or her for advice. Every body is different, and some diets may not be suitable for you. This goes double if you are pregnant, a growing teenager, a senior citizen, or if you have any health issues. The last thing you want is for your diet to add more negative health implications. Talk to your nutritionist about the diets you're considering – he or she may have an even better idea! But be honest with them and with yourself about your nature, your lifestyle, and what you are willing and able to do.

ASK MEN: are You suffering from Sleep Disorders?

Many people report that they suffer from serious sleep-related problems, though those same people sleep approximately 6 hours a day and do well with this amount of sleep.

Research shows that adults can function well with six hours of sleep a night, or even less if they are used to it. What sometimes stresses people out is the wide held belief that you need eight hours of sleep every night. As a result, individuals go to bed when they don’t feel tired and spend a lot of time trying to sleep; and when they can’t sleep they get frustrated and feel stressed out. Others suffer from sleep disorders that result in problems that are much more serious.

The majority of sleep disorders fall into one of two complementary categories: insomnia and hypersomnia. Insomnia includes all disorders where an individual has difficulty starting or maintaining sleep; people who struggle to fall asleep at night. Hypersomnia includes all disorders where individuals feel too sleepy during the day or sleep too much.

Insomnia may come in the form of too little sleep, but it can also be a problem of too little undisturbed sleep. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the patient stops breathing during the night, wakes up, starts breathing again, and goes back to sleep. Much like insomnia, people who suffer from sleep apnea usually wake up feeling like they did not sleep well, and that they slept much less time than they did. On the other hand, some patients are totally unaware that they are

waking up multiple times during the night, and complain that they feel sleepy during the day. Studies show that sleep apnea is more common among males, individuals who are overweight, and elders.

Ironically, a lot of people suffer from insomnia as a result of taking sleeping pills. In the beginning, the pills are usually effective and help individuals fall asleep and maintain their sleep. The problem is that soon patients find themselves caught in the cycle of drug use.

Tolerance to the drug develops and patients gradually need more of it to fall asleep.

The other problem is that after some time, the patient cannot stop the drug without experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which include insomnia.

If you fall asleep in inappropriate times, such as in the middle of a conversation, while driving, eating, or even swimming, then you may be suffering from narcolepsy; the most researched disorders of hypersomnia.

Narcolepsy is associated with two main symptoms. The first is severe daytime

sleepiness and repeated 10-15 minute naps during the day. The second symptom, called cataplexy, is a recurring loss of muscle tone that is often triggered by an emotional experience. This could mean that an individual feels the need to sit down until it is over, or could be as intense as causing an individual to fall to the ground, unable to move for a minute or two.

Both insomnia and hypersomnia are common symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.

Individuals who suffer from sleep disorders tend to have very high levels of stress, and may be irritable, on edge, and find it difficult to concentrate during the day. On the long term, this commonly leads to other negative health problems.

This is why it is very important to get professional help if you think you might be suffering from a sleep disorder.

Zoom In Bait & Weight Fishing League at Somabay Soma Bay hosted The Bait and Weight Fishing League event from the 24th - 27th of January, and the Sheraton Soma Bay Resort was the official sponsor. Representatives from Soma Bay, Red Sea Anglers (RSA), and the Egyptian Angling Federation (EGAF) were divided into 13 teams to compete in the 2 days fishing league. A gala dinner took place at The Westin Soma Bay to celebrate the victory of all teams and 1st prize winner, Mohamed Fahmy, who caught a 28.950 KG Cobia Fish. Since paying back to the community is one of Soma Bay’s beliefs, the event offered an opportunity for all participants to donate their fish to The Food Bank to shed awareness of poverty and malnutrition in Egypt.
