Fitness Steroids

Honesty Among Coaches

C

Steroids, Results and Unrealistic Expectations By: Victoria Haig

Cairo is in the midst of a fitness renaissance, it is embracing fitness in all its forms: bootcamps, boxes, and gyms seem ubiquitous. However, with the quest for physical fitness, performance and aesthetically pleasing bodies comes the darker side of the industry – yes I’m talking about the drugs! For the purpose of this article, I will use the term steroids but actually I am referring to all performance enhancement drugs: pro hormones, hormones, bodybuilding drugs, and anabolic steroids.

GROUP 1 didn’t train and didn’t inject

alarming rate – then be alarmed, unless you plan to achieve your goals the same way look for a natural coach with credible experience and qualifications. If someone wasn’t motivated enough to work hard and make incremental progress, then how do you expect them to motivate you.

All groups had the same diet and the latter two groups trained at the same frequency. The results showed that group 2 that didn’t train but did inject steroids gained twice as much fat free mass as group 3 that trained but did not inject steroids and received a placebo.

The hidden culture of drug use creates unreasonable expectations, and as a customer you should have the right to understand how your physique and performance can progress and genuinely evolve. Of course the use of steroids is widespread and many trainers that have taken this kind of short cut still have plenty of knowledge to offer but if they couldn’t stay motivated enough to keep it natural then how do you expect them to understand your frustrations.

steroids, they received a placebo. GROUP 2 didn’t train but injected steroids. GROUP 3 trained but did not inject steroids, they received a placebo. GROUP 4 trained and injected steroids.

To be frank, I’m not here to discuss the ethics of taking steroids, let’s save this complex issue for another article, rather I would like to discuss the issue of false advertising. By this I mean if you are hawking any kind of group training, transformation package, or products either as a coach or online and you are dishonest with your followers about your steroid use then that is false advertising.

Why am I telling you this? No, not to promote steroid use because remember with those gains comes a whole myriad of unpleasant physical and psychological side effects some of which are irreversible – compromising not only your health but your looks permanently. I quote this study to emphasise that if you are looking to get into shape, feel good, and look better then please choose your coach accordingly. If you are a natural lifter than perhaps the biggest guy in the gym isn’t the best coach for you. Try to think about your goals, the body type you are hoping to obtain and synchronise these with your coach and their training methods. If you want to look like a Victoria’s secret model, then perhaps training like body builder on steroids isn’t the best path. If you are looking to get abs, then someone who has worked hard consistently over time will be better placed to guide you than the online fitness model that achieved his/her look with a few cycles.

If you ask people to eat as you eat and train as you train and put yourself out there as motivation for paying customers, you should also be transparent about how you personally have achieved these results. I’ve often heard people say just because he/she takes steroids doesn’t mean they don’t work hard. Sounds good? Well a study undertaken in 1996 actually strongly refutes this claim.

Many gym goers harbour a belief that the biggest guy in the gym knows the most - don’t fall into this trap, think about the implications of the cited study. With the lack of integrity in the fitness industry, how can one tell who does and doesn’t have a medicine cabinet that looks like the storage room of a big, reputable pharmacy. If your trainer gains or loses their shape at an

A recent study in the Journal of Epidemiology stated that the Middle East tops the global ranking of steroid consumption, with recreational sports people being the largest group of consumers. If my experience during my time in Egypt is anything to go by, then more people than you would like to believe take steroids – this includes actors, fitness models, personal trainers, amateur athletes, average gym goers, and probably anyone you know that transformed overnight.

8 | January 2017

I would like to mention that it’s not only male coaches and athletes that choose these short cuts – there are plenty of females who opt for them, too. It’s very difficult to know if your coach is taking steroids, it’s not just the obvious huge muscled guys. Actually, if someone is very shredded and dry, if their muscle appears to be 3D, if they have defined boulder shoulders then these too are signs of drug use because this area of the body has a lot of androgen receptors, which are special types of proteins in cells that responds to certain anabolic hormones. A further indicator is if their hairline suddenly starts to recede. People who take steroids, although they will never admit it, choose the easier way, a short cut, but in life there are NO short cuts sooner or later there will be an expensive price to pay. It is up to every individual how they treat their body, the problem arises when you choose to be motivated by people who create unrealistic expectations, causing you to question yourself and your genetics. Once you find a coach that truly works on understanding your genetics, the physiology of muscle growth, fat loss and use that knowledge to help you – you will reach your goal. It might not happen overnight but you will get there in a healthy natural sustainable way.

Fitness Workouts

Your New Fat-Torching Routine: 5 Total-Body WorkoutsExpectations

U

nless you have all the time in the world, getting the most out of a training session at the gym entails multi-joint moves that engage everything from traps to calves. However, it is vital to perform these compound movements correct and under a trainer’s supervision to grasp its full gains.

KETTLEBELL SWINGS — RUSSIAN AND AMERICAN METHOD

Known for requiring explosiveness and power, the kettlebell swings will tax your shoulders and arms as well as strengthen your back and gluteus. And above all, it will boost your cardiovascular throughout this dynamic workout. How to Do It: Stand with your hips shoulder-width apart, and hold a kettlebell with both hands in front of your hips. Squat down while keeping your back straight and allow the kettlebell to sweep between your legs. With an explosive movement, push your hips out of the squat, using the power of your legs to bring the kettlebell forward at chest height, then lower it down and begin the semi-squat portion again.

KETTLEBELL SINGLE ARM AND LEG CROSS OVER DEADLIFT INTO A SINGLE LEG SQUAT Deliberately slow in motion, this workout necessitates extraordinary balance using your core, buttock, and back. And the slower you go, the harder it will be – especially when using a heavy kettlebell. How to Do It: In a standing position, hold a kettlebell by your side in your right hand. Gradually lift your right leg up and hinge forward into a single-leg deadlift. Return back to the initial position while keeping your right leg elevated off the ground. Swing the kettlebell up to chest height using both hands. Repeat the same workout several times, and then switch legs. Tip: If this move is too advanced, try doing a Romanian deadlift and a goblet squat, using both hands for the deadlift and both legs for the squat. 10 | January 2017

SQUAT DUMBBELL PRESS

Incorporating weight in any given workout can severely upshift your strength and performance, while building strong shoulder, arm, and back. Plus, your core has to help stabilize you as you move between the squats and the press, which makes it a total-body exercise. How to Do It: Stand with legs slightly wider than shoulder width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand. Squat down with your knees behind your toes, and keep both hands down by your side. Pause at the bottom of the squat, and then lift up while driving your arms over head. Lower your arms and repeat.

SUSPENDED HIGH PLANK WITH ROTATION

Elevating your feet by a suspension system places additional weight on your hands, chest, and arms, forcing them to support you. How to Do It: Start in a push-up position with your feet secured in the cradles of a suspension system. Swing your feet out to the right, bringing your knees to your right elbow. Return to the center, and then swing to the left side. To make the exercise more challenging, lift your right arm as you swing to the right and your left arm as you swing left.

TURKISH GETUP

If you are seeking a full-body workout that employs all muscles, this move is one to add to your list. How to Do It: Lie flat on your back and hold a kettlebell with your right hand. Lift the kettlebell up so that it is directly over your chest and your arm straight. Then bend your right knee so your foot is flat on the floor. Roll slightly to the left. Using your left arm for support, bring your upper body off the ground while keeping your right arm extended overhead. Keep your eyes on the kettlebell and keep your chest open. Push your hips off the ground so they are in line with your torso. Swing your left leg underneath your body and come onto your left knee, while keeping your torso straight and eyes fixed on the kettlebell. From this position, use your back leg to push you up into a standing position. To get back down, step your left leg back into a lunge position and place your knee onto the ground. Reach back with your left arm and place it palm down on the ground. Keeping your right arm extended out, push your hips off the ground to be able to swing your left leg back in front of you. Lower down onto that left hip, and then gradually lower your upper body down to the ground until you end up in your starting position. January 2017 | 11

Fitness Resolutions

8 Fitness Resolutions You Must Adopt in 2017

I

f one of your big fat list of resolutions is to take your fitness regimen to a whole new level, you better be ready for C.O.M.M.I.T.M.E.N.T. This means you must banish all hazardous routines - including this seductive box of cigarette and extravagant ancient bottle - and adopt new healthy lifestyle and personality traits. Not because you started thinking about that New Year’s resolution means that you will actually take steps forward. I don’t need to mention that most such fitness resolutions go down in flames. So if you are not planning to C.O.M.M.I.T…. flip the page! And for those who are interested, here are 8 possible fitness tips to implement in 2017.

12 | January 2017

1. FROM ZERO TO HERO!

4. BUILD STRENGTH

Everyone has to start somewhere, and if your roots are engraved inside the couch, then you have to do something about it. At the same time, you don’t really need to train like a beast every single day. If you spend some time walking on regular basis, you’ll build a base that will help you upshift your performance gradually. Above all, it is a smart idea to set your strategic plan ahead to have a sense of purpose and motivation. Start thinking about your what, when, and where to identify the activities you should adhere to. For instance, if your goal is to start kickboxing classes, you must build a decent fitness level through running and cardio.

A productive training regimen should focus on all fitness disciplines, such as agility, speed, flexibility, endurance, … and strength! The main reasons to switch things up are either boredom or specificity. That latter one means adopting a new lifting program to enhance your performance in non-lifting related activities. Adopting a well-rounded program will help you become more functional; meaning that you can easily perform any activity easily and smoothly. A weighted squat, for example, can help you bend, play with children, or lift groceries easily. That decided, you’ll need to find a sports trainer with ample experience in training people to design an adequate program for you.

2. CARDIO Even though we publish holistic photos of bulky men doing cardio, in real life, cardio is not that frightening. As mentioned above, when we build a proper fitness level gradually, we become more eager and able to increase the intensity of our workouts without encountering severe difficulties. The key to attaining this is frequency. Hence, start engaging in some interval training to increase your speed capabilities; opt for a 5 to 10 minutes of cardio, and then pave your road from there. By this, you will adapt to extra workload easily without suffocating from the additional work.

3. INCORPORATE NEW EXERCISES Performing the same exercises in the same order will impede your progress with time and might wreck your performance. If you have a precise goal, it’s wise to get instruction from a specialized coach. Performing any new workout requires step-by-step assistance to master style and posture. You can’t perform a kettlebell squat alone and expect no injuries or pain. If you’re looking for something totally new but aren’t sure what to do, start asking others for ideas or searching through the Internet for videos.

5. GET READY FOR A RACE One way to fire up your performance is to create a competitive environment. Whether you are interested in triathlon, running, or CrossFit, you will find several competitions throughout the year in Egypt. All you need to do is to figure out which race you want to partake in, register, and prepare yourself for it. Whether or not you need a coach depends on how independent you are, as well as how ambitious you are. If you just want to complete a marathon, you can fetch for a training program from the Internet. But if your ultimate goal is to win, you must design a well-rounded plan that makes the competition distance or program seems easy.

6. ABS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU THINK Oftentimes we encounter back pain when it is not supported in the correct posture by our abdominals and back muscles. This could be a result of numerous unhealthy habits and is not something to be taken lightly. Without abdominal strength, you will not only

face back problems, but also difficulties with sitting, standing, walking, and bending. That’s because your center of gravity is located at your sacrum or roughly just below your belly button. Consequently, your abdominal muscles play an essential role in maintaining a balanced and upright form at your center of gravity. Now that you know the importance of your abs, you need to integrate abdominal strengthening workouts and healthy eating habits to lose fats and pop up those sexy muscles.

7. REST AND RECOVER It’s common sense that resting is beneficial for injury reduction, but why? When you perform a certain workout, you tear muscle fibers. If you push it too hard without a break, you will not allow your immune system to repair your muscles and joints, which will eventually lead to injury. In general, it takes your body about two weeks of zero activity before you start losing your muscles and physical strength; therefor, skipping a day or two will not deteriorate your performance. Taking a rest period will not only rekindle your hunger for exercise and help prevent burnout, it will also recharge your mental state. So make sure to have a good quality of sleep every night and take one or two days of rest.

8. DON’T SEPARATE TRAINING FROM NUTRITION Exercise alone does not lead to what is sought, whether it is bodybuilding or weight loss. A high quality diet wont lead to the desired results either! The athletic challenge initiates the right processes in the body and the diet nourishes the body with vital nutrients. That’s why, training and nutrition must be in harmony, so that results can be seen. It is recommended to visit a nutritionist to tailor a diet with the precise quality, quantity, and interaction of nutrients, according to your training program and body’s need.

Fitness Bulletins

TRIATHLON IN NUMBERS

30

The number of training hours per week

On a typical day, you should train all three disciplines, with breaks between each for recovery. This can mean a 90-minute morning swim, a bike ride to and from work, and finally a 60-minute afternoon run. For swimming, train with paddles to strengthen your lats and facilitate a better catch. For cycling, spin at a high cadence and change down the gears to exert more power during the race. Last, increase speed by running at 80-90 per cent for 100m.

3,500 Daily calorie intake during training

To sustain a prodigious training performance and healthy lifestyle, stay away from frozen packs, junk food, foods high in fat and fiber, sugary beverages, excessive caffeine, fizzy drinks, and processed foods. Instead, focus on eating fresh and natural foods, including an array of colored fruits and vegetables, as they will nurture your body with a wide variety of antioxidants to slacken the oxidative impairment and inflammation caused by your training. In addition, fiberrich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain healthy and adequate amounts of carbohydrates, which make them every triathlete’s best friend. It is strongly recommended to consume around 3-4.5 grams of carbohydrates and 0.5-0.8 grams of protein per one-pound bodyweight everyday. The carb-to-protein ratio should be somewhere between 4:1 and 7:1.

16 | January 2017

1

5

The number of recovery days

Enjoying one day of recovery is mandatory, but it doesn’t exclude all types of exercises. Swimming under the water is a natural massager that helps muscles recover. Also yoga is very relaxing, both mentally and physically, and it enhances your overall attitude and posture.

The number of tips you need to consider

1. Fitness doesn’t come overnight. Overtraining will cause harm more than good. It takes many months, if not years, to truly yield the benefits of your training, so ease into it and be consistent. 2. In order to be consistent, you have to stay motivated. Set short-term and long-term goals to design an effective training routine and attain your goals. 3. Make sure you keep time for your friends and family, or better yet find a way to receive support and encouragement from individuals who truly wish best for you. 4. To get the most out of training, make sure you add intensity and mix it up. Training in one mode will only restrict you in a limited zone, and it’s a definite recipe of failure. 5. Love what you do. There is no point in ignoring one or more disciplines just because you are not so fond of them. Rather, find your weak point and enhance it.

Fitness Success Story

MEET THE INCREDIBLE MAHMOUD AMR ABDELHAKIM

Assistant Professor of Urology at Cairo University, Co-founder of Prostacare Prostate Center, Founder of The Trifactory, ITU, ETU and Ironman Coach had almost zero presence in Egypt. What motivated me the most was how people regarded it as an ‘extreme sport’ and how my friends treated me like a crazy person. We started The Trifactory when Ayman decided to quit his job at BP and take triathlon events, training, and travel as a career. At that time, I was already prepared and experienced with all training and technical aspects. So our dedication and determination are what got us where we are today.

IN A RACE, TRANSITIONING BETWEEN EACH OF THE SPORTS IS VERY IMPORTANT. PODIUM SPOTS CAN COME DOWN TO SECONDS. HOW DO YOU PRACTICE THAT? Transition is all about shifting from one sport to the next. It depends significantly on organization, swift movement, and efficiency, where the faster you race, the easier you get through it. There are tiny details in transition that require more attention and practice before the race, such as fly mounting with the cycling shoes already fixed to the bike, running without wasting time on wearing socks, and racing in a trisuit so that you wouldn’t need to change clothes. However, I do the latter only during the race.

WHICH DISCIPLINE IN TRIATHLON IS CONSIDERED TO BE YOUR WEAKEST POINT AND WHAT KIND OF DRILLS OR PRACTICES DO YOU INCORPORATE TO ENHANCE THIS AREA?

WHAT ENTHUSED YOU TO SPECIALIZE IN UROLOGY AND WHAT KIND OF STRUGGLES DID YOU FACE THROUGHOUT YOU MEDICAL JOURNEY IN EGYPT? Well, we can say that 60% of my decision was influenced by my father who is, in my opinion, the best Urologist. My main struggle was to bring something new and to get close to what my father achieved. He motivated and guided me to be better at what we do, even better than him. 18 | January 2017

HOW DID YOU JOIN TRIATHLON AND WHAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO START THE TRIFACTORY? I wanted to get in shape and lose few kilos, so I tried gym training sessions and boxing classes but nothing worked. Then one day, I came across a Facebook event created by Ayman Hakky, who is my best friend’s brother and my partner now. He was introducing triathlon sessions and forming a group of triathletes during a time when triathlon

Swimming... I used to hate it at first but now it represents around 40% of my practice. Luckily, it only takes a small fraction of the race. The turning point in the progress of my swimming skills took place post to a visit to my coach in Boulder, Colorado for a one week training camp. We worked on enhancing my swimming techniques and specific strength required for triathlon. I still have a long way to go, so I am spending most of my training hours swimming.

HOW IMPORTANT IS NUTRITION TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE?

Nutrition is the secret ingredient in triathlon. It’s often referred to as the fourth discipline. I only pay attention to it 3-4 months before the race. The best thing about triathlon is that I can get away with eating double the amount of calories a normal person would eat, and that’s what I love about it!

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR MIND BUSY DURING THE LONG HOURS ON THE BIKE, RUNNING, AND IN THE POOL? I train alone and I don’t listen to music. I could be on a 2-hour run or a 6-hour bike ride

and still enjoy my time. This is the time when I think about everything; my work, my family, and my dreams. I also plan my schedule and solve most of my problems during exercise. When there is something going on my mind or a decision I need to take, it is always done on the long ride on Saturday. I guess I keep my mind busy thinking.

HOW DO YOU FEEL COMPETITION HAS HELPED WHEN IT COMES TO SUCCEEDING IN OTHER AREAS OF OUR LIFE? I believe it helps in every way. Sport competitions gave my life a whole new purpose.

QUICK QUESTIONS:

Who inspires you? My father. What books are you currently reading? Unfortunately, I usually read medical books and journals to stay up to date, but I will start reading in different fields when I retire. This is on my bucket list! What is restful for you? Sleeping! I love it and it’s what I do best. What is your life motto? I can do anything I set my mind to. Advice for new triathletes? You will get there. Your body is a miracle machine, just treat it well and give it time to adapt and adjust, and you will be amazed where it will take you. Also, get a coach, not necessarily the USA team head coach, but someone with experience and knowledge to plan your sessions objectively. If I can do it, anyone can.

Body & Health Nutrition There is a pasta shape to complement every pasta dish out there, thus it is important to pair the correct pasta shape with the right ingredients and sauce.

FOR THE LOVE OF PASTA Pasta has been a staple in the Egyptian regimen for generations, and you possibly think you know everything about these delicious Italian noodles, right? Well, let’s see! The word ‘pasta’ actually has its origins in Greek and Latin, where it means “barley porridge” in Greek, and “dough pastry cake” in Latin.

PASTA SHAPE Long and skinny (spaghetti and fusilli)

SERVE WITH Seafood sauce

Long ribbons (pappardelle and fettuccine)

Meat sauce

Shells (conchiglie and lumache)

Heavy cream sauce

Tubes (penne and macaroni)

Vegetables and cheese sauce

Filled pasta (ravioli and cappelletti)

Body & Health Diets

THE FOUR PRIMARY FOODS

THAT GO BEYOND YOUR PLATE By: Noura Hassaballa

22 | January 2017

E

very time I ask my clients about the factors that keep them from maintaining a healthy weight, their answer is always related to boredom and being able to sustain the type of diet they are on.

You may have tried gazillion different types of diets and none have worked for long term. Many people fall off the diet wagon because they are too harsh on themselves when it comes to dieting; in other words they are following a diet and not living it. Before you start a diet, you need to be aware of your FOUR PRIMARY FOODS and stay in congruence with them! The integrated approach to nutrition divides up food into two groups: primary and secondary. “Primary foods are not the actual food that comes on your plate; in fact the food we eat becomes secondary once we have balanced our primary foods.” Joshua Rosenthal, Founder and Director of The Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

4 PRIMARY FOODS RELATIONSHIPS:

How many times have you seen a coworker, a friend, or a family member who have put on so much weight after a breakup, divorce, or during an unhealthy relationship? It’s very common for many people to binge eat at strange times of the day; most likely at nighttime. Even though you just had dinner and may feel full, you still feel the urge to munch on some unnecessary foods. There is a reason behind those hunger pangs. In nutrition counseling we call it emotional eating. Your brain doesn’t release serotonin (happy hormone), which makes you feel down and depressed, and consequently seek foods that may fulfill this void. At other times when you are happy and in a stable relationship you don’t really think about food that much, because your need for your primary food, which is love was fulfilled. Think about kids playing with their friends, don’t their moms have to actually grab them to eat, otherwise they will forget to eat.

CAREER:

Same thing happens during bad days at work or a stressful meeting with your boss; you find yourself automatically reaching for the first vending machine to grab a bar of chocolate. That high you get after eating chocolate is actually the release of serotonin hormone that relaxes you and gives you that “I’m Fine” feeling. What’s worse is the guilt feeling you get after eating the foods that feel wrong for you. You feel guilty after eating these kinds of foods because you don’t have the sense of moderation. It’s ok to have that bar of chocolate, it’s ok to have that scoop of ice cream, but it’s not ok to abuse those foods.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:

No one said you have to be hitting the gym daily, but you just have to be physically active. This can be walking, taking the stairs, doing some house chores, or even dancing on your free time. It’s been proven that exercise can make us feel good. It releases endorphins that can improve mood and fight depression. It also helps us de-stress, energize, and boost our confidence.

SPIRITUALITY:

Feeling connected to the universe and being able to understand ourselves is a great example of primary food. If we understand why we are here? Who we are? And why we eat what we eat? We will start to have a better relationship with food. I call it abusive relationship when I see people having an addictive relationship with food as if they wont ever eat it again. Meditation, gratitude lists, and morning pages can help strengthen your spiritual side. Primary foods are much more important than what is on your plate. If you are able to balance these foods you will be able to balance your diet for a lifetime. The kind of diet that works for you may not be working for someone else. What I’m trying to tell you is that you have to listen to your body and fulfill what it needs. You can’t stick to one plan throughout your whole life and not get bored or sick of the daily routine. You must try and experience different diet plans to see what works best for you. You may want to try being a vegetarian for a month, and switch to the Paleo diet the next month. It’s always good to experiment with different diets and see what suits your body best. Diet is not a just a paper to follow, it’s a way of living when it comes to conserving your health.

Iron:

The Essential Mineral You Often Disregard By: Ahmed Mostafa

I

ron is a mineral responsible for carrying oxygen in your red blood cells and transmitting the nerve impulses with enough iron in the body to prevent anemia.

Iron is a mineral that’s vital to your health. All cells contain some iron, but most of the iron is present in our red blood cells and responsible for transporting oxygen from lungs to all organs and tissues in our bodies. Iron deficiency, or anemia in other words, occurs when the optimal level of iron in red blood cells cannot effectively provide oxygen to cells and tissues, which results into fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and lack of concentration caused by: • Menstruation especially with heavy or prolonged flow. • Blood loss. • Peptic ulcer disease. • GIT bleeding from prolonged use of medication likes Aspirin. • Cancer in Gastro-Intestinal Tract. Consuming adequate amounts of foods rich in iron and vitamin C can help you maintain a healthy level of iron in the body. It is thus recommended to consume about 18 mg per day. Foods rich in iron include beans, dark chocolate, dark leafy greens, quinoa, soybeans, artichokes, bread, broccoli, dried fruits, egg yolks, fish, lamb, nuts, oatmeal, peanut butter, rice, and red meat. Iron from animal sources is usually absorbed more than iron from plant sources. 24 | January 2017

Eating foods high in vitamin C at the same meal increases the chance of absorbing plant iron including cabbage, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon, orange, pineapple, strawberry, tomato, zucchini, and mango. Spinach is not a good source of iron as it contains about as much iron as most of green vegetables but also contains oxalic acid, which blocks around 80 to 90% of iron from being absorbed. On the other hand, iron can either heal or harm you. If you consume more iron than what your body needs to satisfy your hemoglobin requirements necessary for cell oxygenation, the remaining amount can build up in your body as the body has a limited capacity to excrete iron. The problem with iron is that it is a very potent oxidant stressor, thus oxidation causes dangerous free radicals that may cause damage to cells and DNA. Here are some examples for food high in iron and its iron contents: • Liver (23 mg of iron per 100 grams) provides more than a day’s worth of iron and it is also a good source of other minerals like zinc and copper. • Dark chocolate (11 mg) delivers antioxidants that are not present in milk chocolate. It also works best to satisfy chocolate craving.

• Oysters (7 mg) are good source of protein and minerals like zinc. • Lentils (3 mg) can be mixed with a source of animal protein like chicken breast or beef to nourish your iron profile for the day. • Olives (3 mg) also contain fibers in addition to monounsaturated fats, which comprise of healthy fats that can be integral in any healthy diet. • Pumpkin seeds (3 mg) are also rich in omega-3 and tryptophan, which can ultimately satisfy sugar needs and help you get better sleep. • Beef (3 mg) is prominent for its great protein content that builds lean muscles and speeds recovery post to a workout. • Asparagus (2 mg) is also rich in vitamin A and C - two outstanding antioxidants that enhance vision and immunity. • Quinoa (1.5 mg) contains good amount of magnesium and potassium. • Artichokes (1.2 mg) are good source of fibers. • Chicken breast (1 mg) is rich in protein that builds lean muscles optimally. • Broccoli (0.7 mg) is not only rich in iron, but also rich in fibers and vitamin C.

Body & Health Ask Men

ASK MEN: ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM MANXIETY? By: Ahella El Naggar

“Something awful may happen to me, and I better be ready for it if it does.” - is a thought you might be too familiar with? Are you constantly worrying about your future? Do you get unbearably anxious when you try to plan your next step? Do you feel helpless and out of control? Do you feel like you are paralyzed when making the smallest decisions in life? If your answer to many of these questions is “yes” then you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. Some studies have shown that anxiety disorders are the second most common category of psychological disorders among men. Too much anxiety can make the normal demands of life feel like life-threatening situations, but a mild to moderate level of anxiety actually enhances learning and performance. For example, feeling some anxiety before an exam may motivate you to study better and keep you alert during the exam. Likewise, feeling anxious before performing on stage or playing in a football tournament could help you perform better. It is normal to feel anxious in high-pressure situations, such as taking exams, meeting deadlines, and public speaking. However, for some these anxious feelings continue long after the stressful event has passed. They may appear to happen for no reason at all and make it very difficult to deal with daily life.

Anxiety is a complex blend of unpleasant thoughts and emotions about possible future danger. People who suffer from anxiety disorders may find themselves preoccupied with thoughts of possible threats in the future, and a sense of being unable to predict or control their future. They also have a strong tendency to avoid situations that they believe to be dangerous. Physically, individuals usually feel tense and alert in anticipation of danger. It is also common to feel irritable, tired, and restless, have difficulty concentrating, and have irregular sleep patterns. In general, men have a tendency to put off getting any kind of support. This comes from a long history of thinking men are supposed to be tough, independent, and able to take on any challenge alone. This can make is hard for them to admit when they have physical pain or health problems; let alone when they are suffering from emotional or psychological pain. Women may be more likely to experience anxiety, but men are much less likely to talk about it or seek professional help. This increases the chances that their anxiety will remain unrecognized and untreated.

Anxiety disorders do not just go away with time. Asking someone to just ‘calm down’ or ‘stop worrying’ is like asking someone with high blood pressure to just ‘slow down’ his or her heart. It is very important to remember that anxiety is an illness not a weakness, and that it is treatable. Living a healthy lifestyle helps to prevent and keep anxiety levels healthy, but if you feel like your anxiety is out of control then it is important to seek a professionals help. It takes strength to admit that you are struggling and need treatment, and the earlier you do this the easier and shorter your treatment will likely be. For those with more manageable anxiety, here are some simple ways to improve your ability to cope with anxiety: 1. Exercise regularly. 2. Find someone you are comfortable talking to. 3. Reduce unnecessary activities that are causing anxiety in your life. 4. Spend some time each day on activities you enjoy. 5. Keep busy. 6. Avoid the use of alcohol and drugs.

Getting to choose our main dish, we couldn’t help but feel craving to try every dish on their menus. The various selections of pizza of different ingredients are all baked in traditional wood oven for a genuinely Italian taste. We tried Parmigiana a perfect mixture of mozzarella, tomato sauce, oregano, roast beef, pepperoni and parmesan cheese baked on a light and crispy crust for an exceptionally flavorsome taste. For all pasta lovers, the Fettuccine Alfredo is a must try! The pasta with grilled chicken strips are cooked to perfection in heavenly cream sauce; pretty much of something you can’t get enough of. Have we mentioned La Pizza Nuttella yet? Quite a treat for anyone who is a sweet tooth out there, that in addition to other specialties on the dessert menu. That is not everything yet; try one of Il Divino’s light and delish panini subs for breakfast prepared with fresh ingredients. One thing we totally loved, are those mini pizzas in adorable mini boxes, so hats off to whoever thought if this idea. The overall dining experience was great, from the moment we arrived; we were welcomed by very friendly and attentive staff, the menu is very rich and the whole ambiance is cozy, relaxing and inviting. TAVOLINO RESTAURANT AND BAR: Serving Passion The Italian Way

T

he moment I stepped in Tavolino Restaurant and Bar, I immediately recalled one of the most precious memories of my early childhood, and that is… mia nonna’s signature Italian dishes.

In quest of a fine Italian dining experience, I have spent countless evenings hunting vast dining establishment and flipping over remorselessly variations that all appeared unrivaled but failed to emphasize the concept of Italian gastronomic elements… until I tried Tavolino. Nestled in Cairo’s most dynamic cosmopolitan district in Zamalek, Tavolino Restaurant and Bar overlooks a breathtaking scenery and sunsets. The modest Italian restaurant is inspired by luxurious and intriguing interior with a modern twist. The concept and execution of this restaurant is characterized by elegant provenance and a homey ambiance to meet the elite clientele’s expectations. The restaurant emphasizes the conviviality of the atmosphere with formal furnishing, muted lighting, minimalistic walls ornamented 28 | January 2017

with paintings, gold tone of leather chairs, dark wooden floors contrasted with elegant tablecloths, providing a sleek seating arrangement with mirrors. On the opposite side of the restaurant is a bar seating area that mixes traditional and modern elements, and offers the tastiest cocktails with the utmost flair. Tavolino also brings exciting live entertainment into the mix every weekend, featuring Egypt’s top-notch musicians and DJs. The leading Italian restaurant showcases rarefied, fancy products including olive oils, pastas, and vinegars to impress all foodobsessed souls who seek exceptional quality in reasonable prices. The menu also offers a wide array of dishes for vegans and vegetarians; all marinated with long-lived Mediterranean beloved secret, olio d’oliva! While enjoying the exquisite ambiance, delightful music, and warm glass of red wine,

I sampled the Carpaccio Divino appetizing herbed beef tenderloin served with rucola, balsamic infused onions, and topped with delicious Parmigiano shavings; the tantalizing crusty Calamari Fritti marinated with lemon and served with unusual sweet garlic dip; and definitely couldn’t resist Tavolino’s signature fresh homemade lasagna layered with herbed succulent meat ragout, flavorsome béchamel, and showered with melted mozzarella and Parmigiano cheese. The appetizers are countless and creative, that it is recommended to share some with your friends to taste different Italian creations. When people think of famous Italian dishes, they usually consider Spaghetti mixed with homemade meatballs or sausages. Truth is, the Italian cuisine features a broad range of creative creations and delightful delicacies that most people are not aware of. At Tavolino, you will always get startled at the outstanding

variety of main courses that feature exotic ingredients and range from L.E. 85 up to 450! After a through break of deep thinking, I felt curious to witness the creation of the breaded veal and eggplants smothered in millefeuille and flooded with fresh buffalo mozzarella topped with crispy leeks and served on capers and tomato chunky sauce. Yea… quite adorable! The construction was too perfect that I didn’t dare to destroy yet couldn’t resist to relish. And who can seriously say ‘No’ to an Italian Tiramisu? Luckily, I was accompanied by a group of food gangsters who devoured it all. Tavolino Restaurant and Bar gives every guest a sincere and welcomed feeling that exudes comfort combined with exquisite service and succulent gastronomic experience. It is the ultimate place to hit when on a date, corporate meeting, or even late night clubbing. But above all, it truly delivers authentic gourmet for clients seeking luxurious, bon vivant experience.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION By: Yasmine Shahine

Oftentimes, we hear people say, “This year is going to be my year… I will get rid of my bad habits and become a better person.” Nonetheless, how many of these people actually succeed? Not many, right? Planning and writing down our New Year’s resolution should be done in a certain, simple way so that it can be really effective and doable.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS… 1. DON’T MAKE IT JUST ABOUT YOU Shift your resolution or goal into a “vision" that benefits someone else you care about, not just you. Let me give an example; if it’s “to get fit”, turn it into “get fit so I can run around with my kids or my partner.” We are less likely to throw away our resolutions if it means hurting people we love.

2. REMIND YOURSELF Keep a visual reminder of your resolution handy; it can be for example a picture that rings a bell to you or an inspirational message in your wallet. The only thing that stops you from sticking to your resolutions is yourself.

3. THINK ABOUT IT IN A POSITIVE WAY The real issue with goal setting for most of us is that we tend to see them with a negative perspective, such as giving up smoking for example. To have the greatest chance of succeeding, we need to think about the benefits and focus our mind on those. When I give up smoking I will be healthier, fitter, and richer. It is really important to give our brains something positive to focus on, rather than suggesting that we are about to lose something.

4. CHOOSE MANAGEABLE GOALS

5. VISUALIZE HOW GOOD YOU WILL REALLY FEEL Forget about losing weight; it’s not about how you look (that comes later), but how you feel. Eating a healthy and balanced diet will improve your immune system, organ function, and general wellbeing. When you see how great you will feel, you will focus all your energy on achieving your target.

6. PLAN IN ADVANCE Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail – this statement is so true. If you decide to work out, plan your week out in advance. Make sure that you have put your workout kit in your car the night before. Be realistic - there is no point saying you will go to the gym every single day when you know realistically, that it will not happen.

7. CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS It is so important to reward ourselves on the way to achieving our goals as well as once we achieve them. This will help us stick to the resolution without having to wait until we achieve our ultimate goal. You hold the keys to your success, so it’s important to allow yourself to tap into your potential and to recognize when you have done so.

The New Year can provide us with a real quality time for reflecting on where we are Two key words: Baby Steps! To achieve going. This year, your resolution doesn’t only anything in life you have to start small. Build up have to be about quitting smoking or losing gradually to what you want to achieve rather weight…it can also include: than setting yourself a goal that is unrealistic. For Being more patient… being less judgmeninstance, start with 10 minutes exercise per day, tal… or being a better person! and build up to 20 minutes until you eventually reach a full hour. 30 | January 2017

Smart Relationship

e f a S r e t t e B : y r r o S n Tha nding up E d i o v A o t n Ways o s r e P g n o r W e h t with

Finding love isn’t easy. When we experience a jolly essence of adoration, we tend to turn this casual fling into a committed relationship and embrace all the passion as if it is meant to be shared for life. Truth is, passion merely last a couple of years, but true understanding and appreciation for one another can last a lifetime. So if you really can’t tell whether your feelings are very strong towards your partner or merely a casual spark, here are some keys that might help you determine the right choice.

32 | January 2017

When in doubt, speak up Both men and women share basic human characteristics; one being a tendency to make assumptions, and another that they can listen to only one conversation at a time. Combine both elements and chaos will arise. Oftentimes, we fall into the trap of making assumptions according to our former experiences and beliefs, and eventually missing out the rest of the conversation. This unfortunate chain of fights can easily be avoided if you ask your partner “what did you mean by that?” every time you are in need for a clarification. When asked in less judgmental manner, one can reduce misunderstandings and fights significantly. So when things get little spicy between you two, demand an explanation instead of coming up with illusions. The worst that can happen is finding out that this person isn't for you – but isn't it better to find out earlier rather than later?

It's always rainbows and butterflies! Passion and romance invade any relationship during the first year or two, but they soon disappear leaving us wondering why our partners have changed. Well, they did… but that doesn’t mean they love us less. At the start of a romantic relationship, men have a surge of hormones normally correlated with women. This rush causes him to be more tender and romantic than usual. At the same time, women encounter a surge of hormones that are more associated with men. Hence, they become more perky than usual. With time, these feelings wear off that we think out partners have changed, while in reality, they have changed back to the person they were before all those biological responses kicked in.

Be honest about what irritates you Most people face struggles with expressing their expectations from their life-partner. They may be more transparent about their interests and passion, but not about what kind of relationship they desire. Examine this yourself and ask your partner the following… “What do you expect from this relationship?” They might suddenly turn defensive, talk in platitudes, take the question very lightly, divert attention to something else, or might even ask you the same question without giving a reply. However, just ask what irritates them and in most cases they'll tell you, because it's easier to express what they don’t want than what they want. Once asked, it's normal they return the favor and ask you the same question, and here is the time where you should be frank about your opinion. However, if they don't return the favor, it pretty much speaks for itself. In both cases, you will know where you stand.

Be clear about what kind of life you want to live Neighborhood, children, career, community, religious sect, and lifestyle are among the serious matters that should be aired, yet unfortunately they don’t show up until a prompt,

stern decisions are ought to be made. It is important to expose your thoughts, lifestyle, and hobbies to your partner so that they can choose to either fully accept you or just leave. If your partner discovers coincidently that you are a workaholic, the relationship will develop cracks that can push wider till the entire relationship entity becomes a burden. All you need to do is be genuinely curious. These are things you need to know, so be brave to ask.

Avoid acting first and asking for permission later Most Egyptian men believe that they have an utter power over women in any relationship to the extent that they find it absolutely acceptable to make decisions on their partner’s behalf. Certainly, there will be times when one of you must make a decision on behalf of you both, but those times are the exception rather than the rule. Making decisions solely without consulting your partner is the downfall of any relationship, as this behavior sends a clear message about who is really in charge of the relationship, a message about how much you value the opinion of the other, a message about whose interests are being put first, and a message about what being in a loving relationship means to you. In short, it is a selfish behavior that speaks a lot about the core of the relationship and guarantees a painful end of the relationship.

Ask yourself what it is you actually 'like' about your partner People often talk about their life partner being their best friend. Well, you definitely want your true friend to remain a best friend – a person whom you can count on, receive support from, feel stable with, and always find around when in need. So the best friend’s role is very imperative and irreplaceable. Friendship, on the other hand, is very imperative as it opens many doors for discussions and communication, which reveal a lot about personalities and the extent of their compatibility. You may argue and disagree, but eventually you might encounter some strong feelings about the personality of your friend and move into a different zone. You will then learn to appreciate and adore the other as they are.

Love and fantasies Let’s be frank, sometimes you may fancy a sexy body, be flattered by someone’s attention, or feel deeply loved by someone you think you ought to like but you really don’t, thus fall into the trap of assuming that because someone told you they love you, that they like you too. Don't be so sure. Sometimes we encounter a bold, heated feeling towards a stranger and get lost in a world full of fantasies, while in reality they do not suit us like our partners’ do. And maybe not. In all cases, make sure you really do like each other before tying the knot.

DANIEL SALIB When Hobby Becomes Business

WHEN DID YOU FIRST THINK ABOUT BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHER?

Photography has always been a hobby that I inherited from my family. I have always been passionate about highlighting the beauty of people and items through photography that I enrolled in several photography courses as electives to develop my skills. Then five years ago, I decided to upshift this artistry into a whole new level through practicing photography and registering in online certified courses.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Finding angels and emphasizing them with lighting are critical elements that differentiate one photographer from the other, and these are the areas that I mastered for the past few years. Additionally, handling all matters from A to Z is not an easy task, but it surely guarantees a professional and unique outcome.

HOW DID YOU LIKE GROWING UP IN CAIRO?

Well, Cairo has undoubtedly shaped the person I am today, but most importantly, it influenced the way I see beauty in it. It is misfortune how Cairo is full of marvelous historic scenes and monumental structures that are surrounded by garbage, densely populated area, or entirely left without proper maintenance. This has taught me to seek beauty in every incomplete entity and emphasize its unique magnificence and elements.

YOU HAVE COVERED NUMEROUS FASHION EVENTS, CORPORATE SHOOTS, AND WEDDINGS, WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THESE FIELDS?

It all started when I encountered a strong attraction towards portraits – I found myself very interested in taking shots of portraits. Later on, this interest developed into fashion and wedding, but with distinctions. There are plenty of foreseeable magical moments during a wedding that I like to cover to endure a lifetime for the bride and groom. Fashion events, on the other hand, provide me with enough room to indulge in the beauty of items and accentuate their individuality.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHS. While I love capturing moments of special occasions and unique shoots, the dearest photos to my heart are the ones that were born from a sole desire to capture a particular surrounding without any external force or obligation. 34 | January 2017

WHAT CAMERAS AND LIGHTING GEAR DID YOU START WITH AND WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY USING?

Major technological advancements have took place within the history of photography, hence I constantly update my gear with more sophisticated features to deliver the optimum quality to my clients. Canon has been my best friend since my early days in photography. I constantly buy new Canon models and accessories, while keeping my older versions around for other uses. I believe that old cameras provide very unique captures than the digital ones - not necessary better… just distinctive.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST IMPORTANT SHIFTS IN YOUR CAREER AND WHY?

Quitting my job and pursuing a career in photography was probably the most irrational

yet wise decision I have ever made. At this moment, I felt like I was jumping from a cliff with no purpose. What comforted and enthused me to resume with photography as a career was the amount of support I received from my wife and friends. Thanks to them, I am very pleased with this decision.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF JOINING THE FILM INDUSTRY?

For the moviemaking enthusiasts, cinematography is a matter of great interest and it attracts many photographers every year due to the presence of common key elements and technical terms between both photography and videography. However, the differences outweigh the similarities, where each field has its own unique properties. Honestly, I don’t have the passion for cinematography the way I have towards photography.

Quick Questions:

Can you tell us the true basis of your inspiration? Famous international photographers and beautiful scenes of nature. Your favorite movie of all time? A Beautiful Mind. What photographic ambitions have you not yet achieved? Upshifting my performance to meet international level and heading towards reputable brands and campaigns. Something you’re still learning? Everything! Every day is an opportunity to learn a new technique.

THE HAIRY MAN’S GUIDE TO SKIN CARE ROUTINE

T

here is not a single doubt that your bushy forests seize an impregnable shield that even electric razors, manual razors, and epilators cannot withstand. Good news is, your masculine façade appears as a badge of honor. Yet, dear friend, the skin that lies beneath, that you have no idea how it might even look like, is screaming for a little attention. Yeah, you forgot about it, didn’t you?

Well, as the new season strikes our skin the way lightening cracks a street made of concrete, it is time to respond to the awaking call. Even though your hair covers your skin in a way that it becomes hard to even see your skin, you need to be aware of the problems that your skin face, as well as the fact that if you decide to shave your hair you will find chapped, damaged surface. And so, here are tips for all clueless furry men out there to battle skin blues during these winter months.

1. MOISTURIZE THE SMART WAY! Ever tried to moisturize your fine legs with your partner’s cream and ended up moisturizing your hair fossils instead? Yeah, they look shiny yet they act as a kind of barrier; preventing the moisture-rich elixir from reaching the dehydrated surface that is desperately in need. Oils, on the other hand, can easily penetrate through even the thickest follicles, which not only nourish the skin, but also enhance and delay its aging process.

2. THE EXFOLIATION CONTROVERSY Here’s something interesting you might like to know: your body hair acts as a natural exfoliant! Basically, when you rub a body wash over your body, you end up effectively messaging your skin with its own stranding, diminishing dead skin and dirt. While this process leaves your skin fresh, clean, and energized, it doesn’t mean you should forgo exfoliation altogether. Just stick to a weekly exfoliation routine composed of natural ingredients such as oils, fruits, and salts.

3. APPLY SUNSCREEN If you think sunscreen is gay, you’d better get rid of your tanning oil and prepare yourself for a slight possibility of developing cancer. Just because there is hair doesn’t mean that the skin beneath is not prone to the damaging effects of harmful ultra violet rays. So instead of hurting and burning your skin, opt for oil-based sunscreen to ensure easy penetration to the skin and guaranteed protection.

4. LEARN HOW TO TREAT INGROWNS RIGHT In-growns… not necessarily on your top 100 things you think about, but at some point or another, you will if they make an inappropriate U-turn and tunnel into the skin. To save the inflammation hassle, consider ways to deal with them. Give your body few days to autocorrect or use a pair of sterilized forceps to suck it out.

DRESS LIKE A LEGEND

HUGO BOSS

For classical elegance meets muscularly sharp style, we’ve selected the best suits and accessories from local and international designers to look smoking hot!

When choosing a tuxedo, opt for the suit that fits your body perfectly and boosts your confidence.

HUGO BOSS

Black is the most traditional color for a tuxedo, but here’s a new tip: dark blue often looks more erotic and classy in both photos and reality.

HUGO BOSS

Wear long socks so you don’t expose your calves when sitting down. If you are planning to wear cufflinks, choose a thin dress or evening watch that sits flat against the wrist.

DALYDRESS

Bow ties work ideally with black or midnight tuxedos, especially those made of the same material as the suit’s lapel. You know what is sexy? Undoing your bow tie at the end of the night!
