Meet Patty Wirth, owner, a fifthgeneration Montana rancher. As the heart and soul of the Ranch, she is welcoming guests with the legendary Montana kindness and sense of hospitality. Guests feel instantly at home.
The Rocking Z is a family business, owned, operated and managed by the owners. Zack and Patty started the guest ranch in the year 2000, making their dream into reality. Zack's family settled in the area in 1864, and Patty's family settled a few hours east of the ranch in 1872. Between cattle ranching and operating a construction business, Zack and Patty dreamt of being able to work together and share their lifestyle with others. When they transitioned the family ranch into a guest ranch they were able to realize that dream. They have six children, all of whom are married and live in Montana. Zack and Patty are proud that their two youngest children love the guest ranch as they do and manage much of the ranch for them today.
The Rocking Z practices Natural Horsemanship learned from the Parelli Foundation, Martin Black and Monty Foreman. Parelli Natural Horsemanship has developed an incredible method of teaching Natural Horsemanship to people without leaving gaps. The fundamentals are taught through Pat Parelli's Seven Games. The first three games build rapport, and the last four games put that rapport to a purpose. These games are taught on the ground and applied at all times around the horse, whether riding down the trail or starting a colt who's never been touched. At the Rocking Z ranch, each guest will receive a personalized teaching adapted to his riding level.
The Horses at the Rocking Z are all trained or re-trained on site. Many were bred and raised on site, and all are known individually by the head wranglers on the ranch. There are over 80 horses on the ranch, from new foals to retired masters.
The Herd is full of many breeds, dominantly Quarter Horses but also Mustangs, Belgians, Morgans, and many cross breeds. All are trained using Natural Horsemanship, and are excellent at building relationships with their humans.
The Boss of the barn, always checking on horses and guests.
Coming on a riding holiday can be daunting. Whether you are a very experienced rider, afraid of being placed on an ancient slow animal, or a complete beginner, afraid of taking on more than you can handle - it is a big decision to trust that a stranger will put you on the right horse! You will be matched with an animal that is safe but fun and just challenging enough to be interesting. Be bold and brave! The amazing wranglers will listen to what you want and do their best to match.
Stunning Montana landscape.
At Rocking Z Ranch, riders have opportunities to explore various western traditions beyond trail riding such as working cattle and barrel racing. Additionally, you can deepen your bond with your horse using natural horsemanship skills both with liberty and riding enrichment. Beginning Riders will find that they learn an enormous amount just by spending plenty of hours each day with and on the horses. Opportunity to deepen their love for Horsemanship by advancing their feel and timing in the saddle from a western perspective.
When is the last time you sat back and took time just to laugh at nature and its antics? The Rocking Z ranch’s herd of horses live out together, and are of a huge variety. Watching them is an opportunity to learn so muchstraight from the horse's mouth! Learn their language the way the ancients did - by watching how they interact together.
Observation is the first step to true understanding, and that is the key to a partnership.
The main activity on the ranch is Horse Riding. The vast majority of the daytime is spent with the horses. The fantastic team of wranglers adjust rides to meet the needs of guests day by day. Some riding is across vast mountain tops with long lopes. Other riding is up beautiful trails opening up to a stunning vista. Some riding can be focused on horsemanship skills while other rides can mosey down the trail. Best of all, it can be whatever your riding level and fitness need it to be as long as the horse still comes first.
Super friendly dogs are also integral part of the experience at Rocking Z ranch.
By the end of the afternoon, guests are relaxing at the Saloon while the cat is standing guard in the stable.
So many amazing memories for the guests. Rocking Z is all about creating unforgettable memories for families that will be cherished for years to come.
The Rocking Z Guest Ranch is in the Western half of Montana and is central north-to-south. Helena is the state capital of Montana, and is just thirty minutes drive south of the ranch. The nearest airports are Helena (HLN) and Great Falls (GTF). Both airports receive connections from Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Minnesota. The nearest direct-flight airport from Europe is Calgary, Alberta, just six hours stunning drive north of the ranch.

Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, Ouray, Colorado, has earned the poetic nickname “the Switzerland of America.” Surrounded by dramatic peaks and lush valleys, this historic mining town blends natural beauty with cultural richness. Its remote yet accessible location offers travelers a rare combination: a mountain escape steeped in history, luxurious comforts, and world-class outdoor adventures. Ouray is not just a destination—it’s an experience.
Long before miners arrived in the late 19th century, the Uncompahgre Ute people called this valley home. Their deep connection to the land still resonates in Ouray’s natural springs, which they revered as sacred healing waters. Visitors today can learn about this heritage through cultural programs and museums that honor the Ute legacy, offering meaningful context for the town’s modern charm. Respect for Native American history enriches every visit with authenticity and depth.
The Gold Rush of the 1870s transformed Ouray into a bustling mining hub. Walking its streets today, travelers encounter beautifully preserved Victorianera buildings that evoke this gilded past. From the iconic Beaumont Hotel to the red-brick Ouray County Courthouse, architecture enthusiasts will find a town that values heritage as much as progress. These historic landmarks provide a sense of continuity, linking contemporary visitors to the ambitions and stories of earlier generations.
Ouray’s ghost town is a testament to its mining past.
Visiting an old mine is always a thrilling experience! With Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tours, experience life the way the miners did at the turn of the century. Your tour guide will walk you 1500 ft back into history of this former working mine and explain the hardships, working conditions and the big risks miners took for the rare precious metals we still use today.
Of course, Ouray’s greatest treasure remains its natural surroundings. The amphitheater of jagged peaks and waterfalls offers a visual feast in every season. In summer, wildflower-filled meadows and hiking trails open pathways to alpine lakes and hidden valleys. Winter transforms the town into a glittering wonderland, where snow-draped mountains frame every view, and ice climbers ascend frozen waterfalls in one of the world’s premier climbing destinations.

Among Ouray’s most iconic landmarks, the Beaumont Hotel holds a special place in the town’s story. It was built in 1886 with a blend of Victorian, Queen Anne, and French Second Empire architecture. Presidents, European royalty, and celebrated artists once graced its halls, drawn by the combination of alpine scenery and refined luxury that defined the golden age of mountain travel.
After closing in the 1960s, the Beaumont stood silent for more than thirty years, a sleeping beauty on Main Street. Its careful restoration, completed in 2003, brought the hotel back to life with an elegance that honors its past while embracing modern expectations. Today, it is celebrated as one of Colorado’s great preservation triumphs and remains a jewel of Ouray’s historic downtown.

Each guest room offers a unique perspective on the surrounding mountains, while the hotel’s spa and intimate event spaces create an atmosphere of serenity and sophistication. For travelers, a stay at the Beaumont is more than accommodation—it is a chance to experience Ouray’s history in the most luxurious way.
