Community directed youth funds program Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is pleased to announce the first communities participating in its new Community Directed Youth Funds (CDYF) program. CDYF aims to support services for youths ages 12-19 by providing each area with $100,000 over four years to increase activities, opportunities and services. The program will be available to the remaining Basin communities over the next two years.

“We are very excited to be putting funds in the hands of communities to benefit youth in their specific regions,” said Wayne Lundeberg, CBT, Director, Youth Initiatives. “These first communities demonstrated a readiness to come together in a collaborative manner to set priorities, address issues in their regions and enhance activities and services for their youth.”

Six pilot communities and their surrounding areas that will begin the program this winter are: Revelstoke, Golden, New Denver/Silverton, Salmo/Ymir, Crawford Bay/Riondel, and Montrose/Fruitvale/Beaver Valley.

“Our community is incredibly excited by the opportunity to enhance

our youth services,” said Daniel Seguin, Crawford Bay and Riondel Area. “We look forward to working together and with CBT, to find the common ground on which consensus can be built as to where to direct the funding. It’s definitely an inspiring time on the East Shore.”

The program is intended to bring added value and provide resources to communities that show the desire and ability to work together to identify and address issues in their youth communities.

Four more communities who submitted successful Expressions of Interest will begin the program in the spring of 2012. They are: Nelson/ Harrop/Proctor, Trail/Warfield, Rossland and Kimberley.

The next deadlines for Expression of Interests from communities are March 16 and October 31, 2012.

Nelson Police drug bust On December 19th, 2011, a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant was executed on a residence in Nelson, BC. A substantial amount of cocaine, worth an estimated $40,000.00 on the street, was seized as well as steroids, marihuana, and a large sum of Canadian currency. A 27 year old male, who is known to police, was arrested at the scene, and later released.

Police are recommending charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the purpose of traf-

ficking, possession of a prohibited weapon, and possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order against the male. He is scheduled to appear in Nelson Provincial Court on March 6, 2012.

Charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking are also pending on the 23 year old female resident of the house.

Thirteen-year-old Kyra Burkart explored her local watershed recently and got a closer look at Anderson Creek near Nelson. She joined other Grade 8 students from Trafalgar Middle School who participated in Know Your Watershed, a Columbia Basin Trust water-stewardship initiative. Kyra and the rest of the students did water quality testing and toured local water treatment facilities as part of the day-long field trip. Learn more at www.cbt.org/water.

Small businesses have big impact Nelson business owners came out in force to attend a “Grow Your business” workshop, co-hosted by the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Enterprise Centre. The interactive workshop focused on providing tips and tools for businesses to successfully navigate a growth phase.

The Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership sponsored area businesses to attend a variety of workshops at a reduced rate all month long. A total of 188 new and existing business owners took part in

small business month courses and seminars throughout the Central Kootenay region.

A small business expert is available every Thursday in Nelson for free 1:1 sessions with existing and new business owners. “If you have a business issue you want to discuss, whether it’s human resources, marketing or growth, or even if you have a business idea you want to toss around, we’re here to help,” says Wiest. Of course it feels good to give, and it feels good to get.

Do you have memories of being four years old and your aunt Betty comes over to visit? She has a gift for you. And it is all wrapped up with a nice bow. The card is then read to you, you take the gift and try to get into it as soon as possible. But your mother stops you and says, “What do you say to your aunt?”

And you say, “Thank you Aunty Betty.”

Who got satisfaction in that scenario? Not you. As the child, all you wanted to do was open the present.

Not Aunty Betty, she was happy to just give. Either

your mother was satisfied because she got to transmit those words that every mother has said since time began, “What do you say?”

This is the time of year when Santa does much of the giving. But Santa is not there to receive the thanks. For Santa, thanks is knowing that all the little boys and girls have been good in the previous year.

Parents have an opportunity to watch the joy in their child’s face. They secretly get their thanks quietly.

May this be a season of anonymous giving. May “thank yous” not be given to the giver, but to the universe that has provided us with so much.

Patrick Joseph O’Neill June 21, 1958 - December 12, 2011

Teresa Maria Pulice

Teresa Maria Pulice of Nelson, British Columbia, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2011 at the age of 86 at Kootenay Lake Hospital after a brief illness.

Teresa was born on January 21, 1925 in Aprigliano, Cosenza, Italy. She came to Canada in 1962 where she settled in Nelson with her family until her death.

She is predeceased by her husband Angelo (1988), her brother Alberto and an infant daughter.

Teresa is survived by her daughters Assunta Pulice and Marcella Zahn (Ronald) of Montrose. Grandson Michael (Melissa) and Granddaughter Emily.

Brother-in-law Alberto Pulice, sister-in-law Josephine Porco (Frank) and Pamilina Crocco.

Sisters Elena Capo (William) in Toronto and Rita Morelli Ciacco in Italy, along with several nieces and nephews.

Teresa loved her fam-

ily, gardening and baking. She was a generous and caring person, and she will be sadly missed.

Our hearts are broken, but we know she is no longer suffering.

Rest in Peace Mom, Forever. We Love You Prayers will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate with Father Jim Ratcliffe as Celebrant.

Interment will follow at the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, 3 View Street, Nelson, BC, V1L 2V1.

With sad hearts the family of Pat O’Neill announces his passing after a heroic struggle With a neurological disease. He is loved and missed by his family: mother Louise, siblings Sheila and Mike (Lori); daughter Jessica; and nieces and great nephews.

He lived his life without excuses and travelled the world to prove that Budweiser has the same taste on every continent.

For those who knew him, Pat, this Bud’s for you.
