Meadow Creek Open House Saturday Sept. 12 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Meadow Creek Spawning Channel, at the north end of Kootenay Lake Fall is around the corner and it’s that “redd” time of year again; not the colour of the leaves, but when the Kokanee head up local streams and rivers to dig their redds (gravel nests) and spawn. And Meadow Creek Spawning Channel, at the north end of Kootenay Lake, is a great place to view them, especially during the free, annual Open House. The Open House provides a great opportunity to talk to FLNRO biologists and field technicians, and view the fish at (or near) the peak of their run. There will also be information about Grizzly Bears, BearSmart, and the Nutrient Restoration Program in Kootenay Lake. The channel is open to the public every day between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for the duration of the spawning season that usually runs from late August through to late September. With the congregating Kokanee, the channel attracts both Black and Grizzly Bears, and FLNRO may order a temporary total closure to the public if there are high bear densities during the regular open hours. For more information about the Open House, and any possible temporary closures, phone 250-354-6333. submitted by BC Hydro

Visitors can learn about Salmon Spawning at the Redfish Festival

There’s more to celebrating the Kokanee’s return than a good party at the Kokanee Creek Visitors Centre, there’s also lots to learn and tours of the channel. The free festival, now in its fourth year, is presented by the West Kootenay EcoSociety. Music from the Bessie Wapp Quartet and All Canadian Back Bacon and interactive dance from Slava Doval highlight the celebration. But there is more -food and snacks from local vendors, art displays and lots of activities for the kids! https://ecosociety.ca/node/388 Submit your calendar events at https://secure.awe-hosting.com/express-secure/calendar.html

Police News: hit and run, airport damage, cougar sighting hit and run On Saturday, Aug. 22 the Nelson Police Department received a report of a hit & run in the 1000 block of Front Street. A vehicle description was given by witnesses which led to it being located leaving Nelson, heading towards Castlegar. The vehicle was stopped without incident and it was discovered that the 31 year old driver had taken prescription medication that caused drowsiness. He was taken into custody and charged for the careless driving, hit & run and his license was suspended for 24 hours. Many prescription medicines and over-the-counter drugs can leave you impaired under the Criminal Code. There are of course some instances where you need to take prescribed medications (such as certain medical conditions like diabetes or epilepsy). Make sure you read the labels carefully and check with your doctor or pharmacist so you’re safe to drive while taking certain drugs.

airport fence driven through On Sunday, August 23 at 2:45 a.m. a driver on Lakeside drive drove through the fencing around the Nelson Airport. The driver appeared to have then driven around the airport, looking for a way out but came back to the section of damaged fence and exited that way. Nelson Police Department members attended and ensured none of the planes were damaged. A City crew was called to secure the fence. The incident was caught on video and the Nelson Police Department is investigating. cougar sighting On Tuesday, August 25, at approximately 11:25 a.m., the Nelson Police Department received a complaint of a cougar sighting in the 2400 block of Perrier Road. Information received was that cougar was sighted in the area on August 23, 2015 at approximately 3:00 am and that the cougar was last seen heading towards Perrier

Lane/Silverking Road area. The Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that if you come into contact with a cougar that does not run away, stay calm, stand your ground and do not back down. Back away slowly if possible and when safe to do so. Pick up children, but DO NOT BEND DOWN, TURN YOUR BACK OR RUN. Running triggers an innate predatory response in cougars which could lead to an attack. Raise your voice and speak firmly. Raise your arms to make yourself look larger, clap your hands, and throw something you might have in your hands. Do not bend down to pick up any items to throw. This action may trigger a pounce response in a cougar. Please report any cougar sightings to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 or the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

Wildfire Update: Stickpin, Big Sheep Creek Stickpin The Stickpin wildfire burning in northern Ferry County, Washington, five kilometres south of the CanadaUnited States border is now estimated at 19,240 hectares. The BC Wildfire Service is working closely with fire agency representatives in the United States to coordinate wildfire response for this incident. The BC Wildfire Service has begun work on Branch 3 of the Stickpin wildfire (Also known as “The Canadian Branch”), which is the northeast portion the fire. Current objectives include developing situational awareness, identifying anchor points, and establishing control lines to keep this incident from reaching Canada. Growth to the northeast has been minimal over the last few days due to lower temperatures and winds, and the northern part of the fire burning into an area with fewer fuels as a result of the 2003 Togo wildfire. Due to heavy smoke in the area, the BC Wildfire service is currently unable to support crews on the ground with airtankers or helicopter buckets.

If required, BC Wildfire Service airtankers may use Christina Lake for air operations. An Air Attack Officer flying in a smaller “bird-dog” or lead aircraft will sound an alarm over the area prior to airtankers landing in the lake. For the safety of firefighting personnel and the public, recreational boaters are asked to avoid using the lake during these operations. Safe fire suppression efforts depend on the support and understanding of the public. The BC Wildfire Service is working with structural protection firefighters from the Boundary region to assess properties which could potentially become threatened by this wildfire. Residents will be notified if an Evacuation Alert or Order is put in effect. The BC Wildfire Service would also like to acknowledge the support from Border Services in both countries in expediting resources to this incident. Big Sheep Creek A public access restriction for areas around the Big Sheep Creek wildfire west of Rossland will take effect immediately and remain in force

until the public is otherwise notified. This restriction is being put in place to protect the safety of the public and firefighting personnel and closes the Seven Summits trail at the intersection of Red Resort to the intersection at the Old Cascade Highway. The Seven Summits trail remains open from the Nancy Greene Summit to Red Mountain Resort. This area restriction order applies to Crown land within the geographic boundaries outlined below: The intersection of the Seven Summits Trails and the old Rossland Cascade Highway (GPS 49° 1.813’ N 117 53.826’ W) north to the intersection of the Seven Summits Trails and the Top of Red Mountain Resort (GPS 49° 6.330’ N 117 52.138” W) A map of the affected areas is available online at: http://bit.ly/1JnOgdL The 190-hectare Big Sheep Creek wildfire is 30% contained and highly visible from the city of Rossland and surrounding areas. Today 33 personnel, five helicopters and two pieces of equipment are on-site. www.bcwildfire.ca submitted by BC Wildfire Service

of dead and dying trees and fine wood debris from the forest floor. The fuel mitigation completed by the RDCK proved to be successful and assisted in the prevention of the fire growing larger and possibly moving into the community,” said Nora Hannon, Deputy Fire Chief of the Balfour/ Harrop Volunteer Fire Department. The fire has been deemed suspicious. Given the rash of recent wildfires in our region, the RDCK wants to direct our residents to information that could prove helpful during this

dry season. Balfour Regional Park fire effectively put out The Regional District of Central Kootenay Wildfire Protection Plan has demonstrated its effectiveness. The Balfour/Harrop Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a fire at 18:49 p.m. on Thursday evening to the upper bench of the Balfour Regional Park. Nine members from Balfour and three additional members from the North Shore Fire department fought the fire for approximately three hours before successfully extinguishing it. “The fire was burning fairly intense but spread slowly due to the removal

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Writers Gonna Write

Writer ’s block is the bane of my existence. I often struggle to think of things to write about. When it comes to writer’s block what exactly can you do about it? Well there are a few things… I often look at what’s popular in the news today and try to form a topic around it. Generally it’s an area where I already have some support or expertise on. I’ll do the necessary

research but the less I do the better. Another area I look at is life experiences. This is the one I find going back to the most, as it’s far easier to write about this than anything else. It’s easier to go back and see what you’ve accomplished and what those experiences meant. I hope this helped with writer’s block. You probably know these fairly common tips but I hope you find them of some use. I know I do.
