Police News: assault, runaway vehicle, CRA fraud Alcohol-related assault On Tuesday, Aug. 4, just past noon, the Nelson Police Department received numerous 911 calls reporting a fight at the corner of Baker Street and Stanley Street. Police attended to find a large crowd standing around a young adult male. The male had been physically restrained by a citizen. Upon attendance the male was turned over to police custody. The male appeared daze, confused and was bleeding from his nose. The resulting investigation lead to the male with the bloody nose and another male being taken into custody. The police interviewed all involved and discovered that the altercation was a result of love won and love lost. It seems that the male with the bloody nose had come across his ex-love and her new beau on Baker Street. The male asked the young lady to return a pricey necklace he had given her as a sign of his affection. She graciously returned the necklace and received in return, a nasty insult. The male then spat on her. The male made a break for it when the young ladies male friends sprung into action. The friends pursued the spitter on foot and eventually caught up to him. Although one would expect a beating to take place, but, the male that took control of the spitter held him for police. While the spitter was restrained, another male, unrelated to the incident, rode up on his bicycle, dismounted, taunted the spitter and unceremoniously punched him on the nose. As a result of this incident the Nelson Police Department took two

intoxicated men into custody. Both spent time in gaol awaiting sobriety. Once the men were sober enough to understand the criminal process, they were released from custody with court documents. Both men now are facing criminal charges of assault. Man stops runaway vehicle Stanley Street in front of the library is a very busy road, especially at five in the afternoon. Vehicles are driving by, parking, turning, picking up and dropping off people at the library. A constant stream of pedestrians are making their way up Stanley after a hard day at work. On Wednesday Aug. 5, while driving up Stanley Street John Irwin noticed an older SUV roll back out of a parking spot and careen across Stanley Street going backward. The SUV rolled into the far lane and back. It then crossed the sidewalk and smashed into the concrete wall in the police department parking lot. After striking the wall the SUV began to roll forward across the sidewalk for the second time and out into the travelled portion of Stanley Street. Recognizing the danger to the nearby pedestrians, vehicles and passengers driving by, Irwin decided to leap into action. Having only a split second to react, he quickly parked his own vehicle sprinted to the SUV, opened the driver’s door and secured the vehicle by applying the parking brake. All while the SUV was still moving! Miraculously, no one was hurt and property damage was minimal. Police were in the process of removing the SUV when the owner returned to her vehicle. The young adult quickly

recognised that her minor mistake could have resulted in serious injury. It is incumbent on all drivers to ensure your vehicle is secured in a gear or in park with the parking brake applied and the wheels turned toward the curbing. The SUV owner was issued a ticket for failing to properly secure her vehicle. She is not likely to soon forget her error. The Nelson Police Department would like to thank John Irving for his selfless and brave act. Fire Department News: house fire. vehicle accidents and vehicle fire

At 10:49 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug 12, Nelson Fire & Rescue Services responded to a commercial business for a report of the smell of smoke. Both on duty members responded immediately with an Engine. Upon arrival of the crew, contact was made with the caller. It was quickly determined that the odor of smoke was not coming from the commercial property. The crew’s primary objective was to find the source of the smoke. Crews investigated the area and concentrated their search on one residential apartment which was 4 stories above the initial caller’s location. Upon gaining entry into the apartment crews encountered a smoke filled room and a pot of food on the stove with the burner on maximum. The smoke alarm was connected but not functioning. Early notification by the caller to the fire department was a key factor in avoiding a more serious fire loss in Nelson’s downtown core. Year after year, stove/range top burners prove to be the leading cause of residential fires in British Columbia. Nelson Fire Rescue had a busy evening Monday, Aug. 10, responding to vehicle related incidents. Minor accident At 9:02 p.m., dispatch received a report of a two vehicle motor vehicle accident in the 500 block of Baker Street. The on duty officer responded in a fire engine to assess. Upon arrival it was quickly determined that the incident was relatively minor and did not require additional resources. Bus shelter struck by vehicle Just over an hour later, at 1009 p.m., dispatch received a new call for a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Second Street and Davies Street. The on duty officer again responded with an engine. This incident was more serious as a vehicle had unsuccessfully attempted to make at turn at the inter-

Monday night was busy for Nelson Fire Rescue with three calls to vehicle accidents

section. The vehicle had crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and travelled onto the boulevard striking a bus shelter. Extensive damage resulted to the bus stop and it was very fortunate that nobody was in it at the time. Vehicle fire While still dealing with the motor vehicle incident dispatch received another call for a vehicle fire at the Pango Pizza restaurant. The initial report was that the vehicle was up against the building and flames were impinging on the restaurant. The on duty shift officer responded directly to the scene from the other incident and requested that the other on duty firefighter respond in the utility vehicle. Additionally four more off duty members were called out from home. Nelson Police Department members were first on scene and attempted to extinguish the fire using a portable fire extinguisher. When fire depart-

ment crews arrived they were able to open the hood and extinguish the fire. As soon as the vehicle fire was knocked down the crews went into the restaurant to ensure that the fire had not extended inside. Fortunately there was no fire or smoke damage inside the restaurant. The driver of the vehicle was not in the vehicle when the fire started and was first observed by people driving by. The fire appears to have originated in the engine compartment and did not spread to the passenger compartment. Unfortunately there is extensive damage to the engine and other components under the hood. Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the fire incident with two fire engines, and one utility vehicle. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. Damage is estimated at $1500. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not suspicious. submitted by Nelson Fire Rescue

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

It Takes Two Being in a relationship can be a lot of work, trust me, I don’t have any experience. But how can you make it work? Well, let me, as someone who hasn’t lasted more then a few months in any relationship give you advice! It may not be great advice, but it’s what I can offer. Being in a relationship is the equivalent of picking up another job - it has pros and cons. Both involve a large time investment and what you receive depends on how much effort you put into it. If you support your

other half you will reap the benefits. Common interests is a given in making a relationship work as well. So, perhaps its my nerdy hobbies and absurd high standards that keep me from maintaining relationships. I attribute this more to not having much of social life and primarily associating myself with guys. If you haven’t figured it out yet, someone who can’t maintain a relationship also isn’t very qualified to give advice. So yeah, point of the article? Awful advice or maybe learning from failure.
