Chapter 11: Evaluating research
LEARNING INTENTION
Evaluating various types of digital media using the CARRDSS methodology (from the Junior Cycle Science curriculum) to assess the credibility, accuracy, reliability, relevance, date, source, scope and purpose of online research.
LEARNING OUTCOME
2.4 Compare information from various sources to evaluate its reliability, validity, accuracy, authority and timeliness.
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
It is sometimes difficult to know if sources are accurate and reliable. Deciding what sources to include in your research project can be a daunting task even after narrowing down your Google search. Therefore, we evaluate our sources so that we can include the most relevant and valid information in our research projects. We will use the CARRDSS methodology for evaluating digital research.

OBJECTIVES
By the end of this chapter students will be able to:

ACTIVITY 1: CARRDSS NEWS ARTICLE The CARRDSS method of assessing online sources is used widely in the Junior Cycle Science Classroom Based Assessments.
Students will imagine they are asked to write a research project on climate change. In this scenario they choose the topic ‘Effects of Climate Change’.
Using the CARRDSS worksheet below students will evaluate the following resource.
After evaluating the resource answer: Would you use this resource as a reference in your research project? Why or why not?

ACTIVITY 2: CARRDSS SPEECH EXTRACT Students will then evaluate the following extract of a speech about climate change using the CARRDSS worksheet.
Would you use this online resource as a reference in your ‘Effects of Climate Change’ project? Why or why not?

ACTIVITY 3: SEARCHING AND EVALUATING Using the information they learned about how to accurately and efficiently search the internet for research purposes, students will find and evaluate an appropriate resource that they could use in a project titled ‘The Effects of Climate Change.’
ACTIVITY 4: DESIGN Using AdobeSpark, students will create an infographic that they would use to inform first year peers about how to search for and evaluate online research.

ACTIVITY 5: REVISION Students will imagine they are given a digital assignment to do on the relationship between Science and Religion. Create a ‘Smart Art’ list of all the steps you would take to complete the research assignment.
