Explore the safety features in place for teenagers using digital technologies, social media and the internet.
LEARNING OUTCOME
1.5 Discuss the students’ personal safety concerns when using digital technologies, communication tools and the internet. CHAPTER OVERVIEW As we discussed in the second chapter - ‘The advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet’ - safety issues are a serious issue when it comes to the internet. There are various types of risks when accessing the internet. SAMPLE

OBJECTIVES

ACTIVITY 1: MIND MAP In groups of three, using mini white boards or ‘show me’ boards, students will create a spider diagram/mind map of what you think the purpose of social media is.
ACTIVITY 2: STICKY NOTES After discussing the purpose of social media, brainstorm various social media platforms or apps and write down what features each one has (e.g. disappearing images for Snapchat).


When everyone is finished brainstorming place the sticky notes on A3 poster paper in the middle of your group. ACTIVITY 4: DIGITAL MIND MAPPING From the information collected on the sticky notes, students will decide what features they ACTIVITY 3: DIY Students will design their own ideal social media platform using Microsoft Word and decide what features of social media they enjoy the most. ACTIVITY 5: HIGHLIGHT Students will read the profiles below and highlight safe and unsafe features of this page (using different coloured markers/pens).
The following fake social media profiles created by ChildNet International 2009, were created to discuss what is safe and unsafe information to share about yourself online.




ACTIVITY 6: THINK-PAIR-SHARE Each group of three students will analyse one of the above three social media profiles. Discuss the following questions using the think-pair-share strategy.SAMPLE


ACTIVITY 7: YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK Students will revisit to their original social network design. Is there any feature they would change or add more security on?
ACTIVITY 8: REFLECTION JOURNAL Watch the following video about some instances of cyberbullying.

In the students’ reflection journal ask them to note down: Did this video impact on you? What was the main message of the video? What does the phrase ‘sticks and stones may break my bones’ mean to you now? SAMPLE
ACTIVITY 9: PREVENTING ONLINE HARASSMENT Read the PDF from the Garda Siochana giving advice about preventing online harassment. Students will create a digital poster giving advice to your year group of what you should do if you are being cyberbullied.
