LEARNING INTENTION

Explore the morality and legality of downloading content from the internet.

CHAPTER OVERVIEW

As the internet gives us unlimited access to content, it is important to be careful about how and where we download this content from while using the internet. It is very easy for internet savvy people to illegally download or torrent any content including videos, films, music, books and TV shows. This is called digital piracy. In this chapter students will debate the ethical and legal issues around downloading music and video content from the internet.

ACTIVITY 1: VOTE Using mentimeter.com, students will do an anonymous class vote on whether they have: 1. Downloaded or streamed any copyrighted content from the internet.

2. Uploaded any copyrighted content to the internet.

Uploading, downloading or watching such contents, is a breach of copyright law. People debate the morality of the Piracy. Morality means knowing the difference between right and wrong.

ACTIVITY 2: PIRACY IN THE USA Students will read the following quote from President Barack Obama on digital piracy. They could write a formal email to a friend discussing Obama’s statement. “We’re going to aggressively protect our intellectual property […] Our single greatest asset is the innovation and the ingenuity and creativity of the American people […] It is essential to our prosperity. But it’s only a competitive advantage if our companies know that someone else can’t just steal that idea and duplicate it. There’s nothing wrong with other people using our technologies, we welcome it. We just want to make sure that it’s licensed, and that American businesses are getting paid appropriately.” - Barack Obama SAMPLE

TUTORIAL: HOW TO SEND AN EMAIL Students should set up an email address that they will only use for schoolwork. Students may have an email provided by the school. If they do, then they can skip this step.
