Countdown to Cannabis — Missouri’s Medical Marijuana Race to Market

T

he most common question that we get here at The Evolution Magazine is, “When will product be available for purchase in Missouri dispensaries?” Although there is no specific answer just yet, there are many variables to consider. First, even though the licenses have been awarded, these are only “conditional” license wins. DHSS still must vet all the information in those applications to confirm accuracy and transparency. This verification of information for winning applicants starts with a mandatory compliance orientation meeting in Jefferson City by DHSS on March 4 and 5, 2020. Each license winning team has been assigned a compliance officer who will review every detail of its application. If a license is revoked due to inaccuracies or violations, then the license will be awarded to the next highest scorer in line, and that applicant must go through the same vetting process.

The next step is approval for any deviations from the license winner’s original application. DHSS must approve all these changes, and it’s fair to say that nearly every team will have some scale of alterations ahead of them. Whether it’s changes in team members, investors, brands, growing/manufacturing methods, or architectural plans, it all must be approved by DHSS. The inevitably daunting task for DHSS could bring major delays in some areas of Missouri to patients waiting for their medicine.

Now let’s talk construction. Before even one seed or clone can be planted, the facilities must be remodeled and, in some cases, built from the ground up. All the license winners are required to fulfill their application plans within a year of receiving their licenses. “No product for a YEAR!” I imagine this is a frightening thought for our readers as they scanned that last sentence.

Here’s the good news. MoCann Trade has advocated for the implementation of partial build requirements that would allow cultivators to start growing once completing certain phases of construction while remaining compliant with DHSS. This could potentially give them a head start on getting plants in the ground before 100% of construction is complete. We won’t know if this will be allowed until after the mandatory compliance orientation meeting in early March.

Whether DHSS allows for partial phase construction before planting or requires full build-out, the applicant must complete a commencement inspection with DHSS once construction is complete. DHSS will inspect the entire facility to make sure that every single detail of the build-out matches the approved plans, all the way down to the brand of security cameras used.

Best case scenario, we are looking at potentially having product available by mid-to-late summer, although it could be scarce and limited. In upcoming issues, we will dive further into the cultivator’s race to be first to market. With companies like BeLeaf of St. Louis who were already growing Hemp out of one of its cultivation licensed winning facilities, there does seem to be some hope on the future horizon for Missouri patients. Kansas — March Madness and the "Daddy State"

T

he Kansas legislature now has five medical cannabis bills before them to consider. Those who fought against reform for years now have dollar signs in their eyes and are rushing to cash in. While advocates are happy that, seemingly, many leopards have now changed their spots, we remind the people that they must fight harder than ever to protect all patient rights and to make sure that Kansas businesses have an even playing field on which to compete against bordering states.

The “Free State” yearns to be free, but instead, we are saddled with a “daddy state,” where lawmakers love to outdo each other pontificating on what they believe is best for all of us, as we surely cannot be trusted to know for ourselves what is best for us, at least in their minds. It is up to every Kansan to remind them, especially in an election year, that moralizing on our behalf is not their job description. We are neither a monarchy nor a theocracy. Their job is to uphold our state constitution, which clearly states, “All power shall be inherent in the people.”

So, where is your power, Kansas?

It is in your vote above all else. The power of your vote is even more crucial in Kansas than in many other states. We do not have the right to any signature-driven ballot initiative. Our legislative committee members do not have the right, as other states do, to override the chair of that committee to hear a bill, work a bill, or pass a bill through.

The legislators do not have the right to force by a majority that a bill is brought to a vote on the floor of either the senate or house, as only the Speaker of the House and the Senate President have the power to bring a bill “above the line” for a full-floor vote in Kansas.

They also appoint all committee chairs. The same chairs that cannot be overruled by their committee members, under current Kansas law.

Those who hold the key roles of Speaker of the House and Senate President, as well as Majority Leader, in both the senate and house have total power. Now, many lawmakers have tried to change the rules. In fact, many try at the beginning of every session, as that time is slotted explicitly for proposed rule changes to be brought forward.

They are continually voted down by those in power. When have you ever seen anyone in power willing to give it up without being forced to do so? So, the majority will of the people of Kansas, by and large 14

March 2020

middle-of-the-road and moderate in political stance, is without a true voice.

Where is your voice? It can only be represented by those you elect, and they can only have as much power within the process as is given them by the legislative leadership. Your voice, the voice of the people, only has one true path in Kansas — the ballot box. You see now that your vote is absolutely crucial, even more so than in other states where the people are afforded different paths to override a legislature not delivering their will. Many will ask, “Can we not protest?” Of course, you can. The question is if the powers in place will care.

Many, in fact, only deride protests and complain about the noise. I have heard these complaints and comments of derision myself. It in no way means that people should stop protesting. It only means that the people must be an ever-present voice at the capitol, whether by email, phone call, in-person appointments or phone appointments, and good old-fashioned mail. The pressure must be respectful, as disrespect can do much harm to any cause, and yet continuous and unrelenting. Lawmakers must be bombarded, respectfully, so that the will of the people is explicitly clear above the din of special interests, paid lobbyists, and the will of powerful and wealthy campaign donors and PACs. Your power is as strong as is your commitment to change. You can begin at www.kslegislature.org, the legislative website. You can click on senate and then click roster. At the bottom far left of the roster page is the option to download it. It is the same for the house roster and every single committee. You now have all the contact information to begin exercising the power given to you, besides your vote. Please commit ten minutes a day, or thirty minutes on the weekend, to make your will on medical cannabis reform known to Kansas lawmakers.

We must become a tsunami for medical liberty and create such a wave that it carries to the November ballot box.

Now is the time that the rush to pass bills is on at the capitol. It is a sprint from here out. The people cannot afford to be off the field and quiet, lest we are left to bear the consequences of our inaction and silence for years to come.

avigating cannabis products can be complicated, especially if it’s your first time (or the first time in a very long time) in doing so. There is lots of talk about how much THC and CBD are in products, but what does that mean?

To explain, we must first understand that the cannabis plant has lots of cannabinoids, including CBG, CBN, THCa, THCv, and so many others. These cannabinoids are what bond to the receptors in our endocannabinoid system, and what give us the desired effect for whatever condition or symptoms we want to relieve. The cannabinoids we know the most about at this time are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

CBD and THC have the same chemical formula — 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. The difference lies in the way the atoms are arranged,

which gives CBD and THC different chemical properties allowing each to affect your body differently. Both CBD and THC work with receptors that release neurotransmitters in your brain. They can affect things like pain, mood, sleep, and memory.

The simplest way to explain the difference between THC and CBD is this: THC is primarily responsible for the psychoactive or “high” effect that we derive from cannabis. At the same time, CBD does not cause that “high” but instead works with other elements in the body linked to feelings of well-being and pain relief.

Because of this, it is important for patients to look at the THC:CBD ratio on cannabis products. In short, the more cannabinoids in a product, the more effective it will be. This is what some have called “the entourage effect,” a proposed mechanism by which cannabis compounds other than THC act synergistically with it to modulate

the overall psychoactive effects of the plant. CBD is under preliminary research for its potential to modify the effects of THC, possibly mitigating (what some consider to be negative) effects of THC. It’s also important to point out that there are numerous terpenes present in the cannabis plant and variation between strains.

Additionally, we know the best available science makes clear that whole-plant cannabis preparations are quantifiably superior to single compounds. This is because the plant’s complex mix of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids interact synergistically to create this “entourage effect” that enhances each other’s therapeutic effects.

Patients who have used this whole-plant, more-than-less cannabinoid approach typically see benefits to doing so.

For example, a study conducted at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco found that combining THC and CBD produces more potent anti-tumor effects when tested on brain cancer and breast cancer cell lines than either compound alone. A 2010 study found that patients with intractable cancer-related pain tolerated medicines that combined THC and CBD notably better than a pure THC extract. A 2012 study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that CBD “inhibits THC-elicited paranoid symptoms and hippocampal-dependent memory impairment.”

For some patients, cannabis with a very high THC percentage may be what provides the maximum benefit. In contrast, others may be more comfortable with cannabis containing a very high CBD percentage and small THC percentage. The good thing here is that there are lots of options!

It is important to read the testing label if you are purchasing your cannabis in a dispensary to see what the cannabinoid content and/or percentages are. Some testing labs will give a full list of cannabinoids, and almost all of them will provide you with the THC:CBD ratio. If this information is not easily accessible, ask your budtender before making your purchase. If you are growing at home, I encourage you to get your cannabis tested so that you know the breakdown of cannabinoids as well.

As always, with cannabis, start with small doses and work your way up until you find the desired effect. Because of limited research, this trial and error process is primarily left up to each patient. If you are fortunate enough to be part of a patient collective or other MMJ patient group, I encourage you to talk with others about what has worked best for them.

From Hospice to Advocacy:

One Woman’s Cannabis Journey A MUST-READ Story

hen I met Sheila Blosser of NovaLux Dispensary she greeted me with a stack of unorganized papers and brochures. She was emotional as she explained this stack of paperwork was from when she was sent home to be on hospice. Sheila hadn’t gone through the paperwork since, and it was very emotional for her to do so. But she wanted to tell her story.

We began by going through this pile of documents. There were pictures and cards that were made by Sheila’s children. “I don’t really remember much of this,” she admitted. She shuffled through lab reports and instructions.

Next, Sheila handed me a list of medications that she was on when they sent her home to be on hospice.

The list was in three columns of small eight-point font, taking up over half of the page. She had a port going into her chest through which the medication was administered.

Sheila was born with a connective tissue disease called Ehlers Danlos.

In addition to that, she was diagnosed with mastocytosis and a mass cell activation disorder. Daily tasks and taking care of herself became impossible.

“We couldn’t get my organs to work properly. I kept going into severe allergic reactions. Couldn’t keep food or liquid down. Struggled with mobility at home and taking care of myself. We would go from inpatient stay to inpatient stay at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and all the way to KU with the best geneticist we could find. We tried infusions. We tried drugs that had horrible side effects. I had two or three bouts of sepsis — two of them very severe, and we didn’t think I was going to make it,” confessed Sheila.

After being told there was nothing more they could do and setting up home hospice care for the following Monday, Sheila, her husband, and her father went to Colorado to try RSO, a full extract cannabis oil.

Sheila explained that she and her husband had been in the medical and pharmaceutical industry for twenty years, also doing patient education. Her father also had a healthcare background, a Vietnam vet, and had 40 years of experience with the plant. He suggested that she try cannabis oil before giving up, just to see what would happen.

“I guess we just didn’t have anything to lose. I was so sick. So, the stigma behind the plant… I was a Kansas resident. But I just wasn’t afraid; I was so sick and so tired.”

They went to Denver. She remembered laying on the bench seat in the back of her father’s truck, hooked up to oxygen and IVs, but they went to Denver, against medical advice. “I’ve never told anyone that until now,” she admitted.

Sheila said she doesn’t remember much of the first few weeks because the RSO is sedating when taken at high doses, and her body was so exhausted she just slept. Sheila spent the next year as she got healthier traveling around the world to study cannabis. It was the year before legislation passed here in Missouri. Amsterdam, Spain, Portugal, all over Central America, Puerto Rico, all of the legal U.S. states, and Morocco.

There was a story that Sheila was familiar with from a couple of years before she got sick. The woman’s husband is an American, and they did a spotlight on him as an athlete, and he said he was doing it for his wife, who also had Ehlers Danlos. She was arrested for possession of cannabis, and she spoke out about how it had helped her. The story was inspiring for Sheila.

WOMEN & Cannabis Business “Although bad things happened, she was having a lot of success,” said Sheila. “They ended up moving to Colorado, and she recently competed alongside of him as an athlete.” Sheila decided if this mother who had been confined to a wheelchair could try it and succeed, she could try it too.

“This is what I struggled with for years,” she said as she shuffled through the papers. There were lab results from 2016 through 2018. The last delivery of infusions was made in May 2018, which was never used.

“As I am sitting here today with you, I am exclusively on cannabis,” Sheila said. She also has not had any hospital stays since May 2018. Going that long between hospital stays is not something she has experienced at any time in her life.

After hearing Sheila’s amazing story of how cannabis greatly improved her health and quality of life, I asked her how her experience related to her activism for cannabis.

“When I waited almost a whole year of using the plant in the closet, and not really sharing with anyone, just because of the stigma, and I was super scared. But after the information came out in November of 2018, we decided last year in 2019 to expand our existing healthcare business into the cannabis space,” Sheila explained.

The desire of the NovaLux Dispensary was born from this desire to help others as Sheila was helped by cannabis. Sheila’s husband, John Blosser, is the CEO, while she is the Vice President of Community Outreach and also patient experience.

How Activists and Advocates Can Work Together for Justice by attorney Aubrey Gann-Redmon, Contributing Writer

T

he first year of medical cannabis legalization in Missouri has not been without its challenges. As patients across the State try to navigate complex and sometimes vague rules that govern their medicine, so too are court officials and law enforcement. Everyone has a lot of questions about how these processes will work, are supposed to work, and how to address the consequences when confusion temporarily triumphs over clarity.

First, while medical cannabis may now be constitutionally protected here in Missouri, patient's rights are not absolute. There are a lot of gray areas, not the least of which involves immaculate conception.

Most who are intimately familiar with the law as activists and advocates need to honestly acknowledge that while Article XIV does not specify from where a patient may obtain their medicine, the rules create more ambiguity than they do clarity. This might be at least partially purposeful; no state can start a marijuana program legally.

Necessarily, federally illegal seeds will make their way into newly legalized states to start the cultivation and production process. The State cannot condone this in writing. Hence, the rules require — to some extent — that common sense and logic be utilized to lead us to the conclusion that while the State may turn a blind eye to the federal illegality of how these programs start, not all government employees will. Without express direction from DHSS informing law enforcement — on the record — that patients are not to be harassed, charged, or arrested for possession within legal limits, we will continue to see arrests across the State until the courts interpret and apply the law. It’s important to keep in mind, too, that even in states with established programs, that the law is far from settled or clear, and there are still fights in those states on numerous issues from employee rights, DUI sobriety testing, the ability for pediatric patients to medicate at school, and even how far one can go to protect intellectual property rights for cannabis businesses. It’s all new. We are all learning. And the learning curve is just beginning. Sorting through how cannabis will impact every area of our lives, legally, won't happen overnight. This takes time. Sometimes, it can take years.

The court systems do not move as fast as patients want or need.

This is because there are a myriad of procedural rules — both state and local — that apply to these proceedings. This is because both sides — the patient and the State — have due process rights. They are both entitled to be apprised of the allegations and arguments made, and everyone gets an opportunity to respond. The rules tell lawyers and court staff how much time they have to consider arguments, and draft and file their responses. This pace is often intentional because it causes litigants to slow down, consider their arguments, and craft artful responses. There are other rules that many citizens are blissfully unaware of, like the ethical rules that govern judges, prosecutors, and attorneys. If a judge or a lawyer isn't sure whether a particular course of action is ethical, and could jeopardize their livelihood, they are more likely to take a conservative approach that they know decreases 20

the risk of facing a bar complaint or losing their license to practice.

What does it mean to take an oath to uphold all laws, while knowingly advocating for something legal in your home state, but illegal federally? Many judges and lawyers don't care to find out, so they stay within the prescribed comfort zone.

Politics enter the picture more than we care to admit. Judges in rural counties are often elected. So are the Sheriffs and Prosecutors. If you don't like what you see in the courtroom, sometimes the best way to handle that situation is through campaigns to find better candidates.

After all, this year is an election year.

With that background in mind, there are things that activists and advocates need to know about how court works: The Judge is the Master of the Courtroom. Like your home is your castle, and you set the rules in your house, the judge's courtroom is his or her castle, and they set the rules for their court. Every court is different, and local rules vary from one county to the next and even one courtroom to the next. Familiarize yourselve with the local rules, or simply follow the direction of lawyers who practice in that court because it is our job to know the rules. For example, most courts do not allow flip flops or open-toed shoes, cut-off jeans, tank tops, or hats. Most do not tolerate speaking in the gallery because there are microphones at the counsel tables to record the proceedings, and it is imperative for our clients that we get a clear record in case we need to file motions or appeal. Lawyers, witnesses, and judges need to be able to hear one another, too. When protesters interrupt court proceedings, it hampers the lawyer's ability to stay focused and do their jobs. The distractions hurt the clients we are there to advocate for, not just by making it harder for us to communicate, but also because it reflects poorly on the person activists claim they are supporting.

Disobeying the Rules Has Consequences. If you disobey the court rules, such as protesting during open court, judges are well within their authority to punish unruly and disrespectful citizens who are there to observe the proceedings. Lawyers routinely get cited for contempt for far less; I've been cited for contempt for merely missing a docket that the clerk scheduled — mistakenly — on the wrong day. Even ceasing to speak when a judge interrupts a lawyer can earn the lawyer a contempt citation. So please, when you come to observe court, remain silent and observe, while obeying the local rules. If you want to get home to your families, if you have important things on your schedule later in the day or tomorrow, or if you just want to be able to freely leave when court is over, keep the protests outside. Otherwise, you might be spending the night — or a few — in jail for your disruptions, and you will be hard pressed to find a judge that will take pity on you for creating your own bad luck. Lawyers can't always stick around to check on you if you do wind up getting arrested and held for contempt, because we have busy schedules to keep up with when we are done with the docket.

You will likely hear arguments, facts, or allegations that you disagree with in court. Court is the place where people disagree without being disrespectful, shouting, cursing, or allowing emotions to get the best of them.

If you have a medical condition that makes it hard for you to control your emotions, or if that is just your personality, you might consider staying outside the courtroom. It is important to remember, at all times, that the case isn't about you. It is about the person that faces imprisonment or some other serious consequence that could strip them of their home, their job, their family, or their freedom.

It is not a reality TV show, and recording devices are not allowed in the court room.

This is not your time to promote yourself as an activist by being disruptive or disrespectful. If you disagree with what you see and hear in court, write an article, go outside and make a video, protest outside peacefully, write your legislators, or campaign for reform or candidates that support your causes.

Flaunting Your Rights When Others Are Being Prosecuted Is Distasteful. Courts all have security. In no universe will you be allowed to medicate at court, so it is best to keep your medicine locked and stashed in your vehicle before coming to court. No one should be carrying their medicine or paraphernalia into any government building.

For patients being prosecuted to see activists flashing their medicine as they slide through security to watch the accused stand before the judge condemned in court is not only foolish, it is in poor taste. If you think that the judge isn't hearing about what is going on at the security station, you are mistaken. It reflects poorly on the activists, but also the person they are there to support.

If everyone can follow these simple guidelines, the experienced lawyers advocating for patients in difficult situations will be able to concentrate, do their jobs more effectively, and with any luck, be able to positively impact the communities they serve. Lawyers and their clients appreciate the hard work activists do — when they do it peacefully and with respect. We can accomplish more together, but it takes everyone doing their part and putting the clients before the cause in court.

What You Should Consider Before Planting

ith Spring upon us, we are about to experience exponential growth in the number of farms growing hemp in 2020. Hemp was once the most widespread crop grown in America, grown on several former presidents’ farms, including George Washington’s. With the passage of the 2018 Hemp Farm Bill, farmers are now able to find simple things such as crop insurance for growing hemp that before they could not find.

Many people have experienced or have known others who have felt the benefits of using CBD derived from hemp. Along with CBD, there are also many other uses for different parts of the plant that make growing hemp seem very attractive. There’s been a big increase in hemp products, such as hemp oil or hemp seed oil, being used in foods or as proteins, as well as a growing market for many industrial uses, so much so that many have viewed it as the next cash crop. So many farms, such as tobacco farms or soy farms, have seen declining outputs the past few years, have been adding hemp to their fields and rotation. While there can be great potential in growing hemp, it is also not as easy as putting the seeds in the ground, growing it, and expecting there to be a line of buyers.

If getting into growing hemp, there are some things to really think through and be aware of, so you can plan and adjust as you grow to be as successful as possible.

So while many are just going to start growing this year, or maybe have in the past one to two years, if using land that previously had chemicals used in it or other soil contaminants it’s likely going to be in the hemp itself until after a few years. So, while it’s important to be able to produce or ask to see a farm's COA, it's equally important for both farmers (so they can continue to improve their product) and buyers to understand what is in the hemp and have it tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants. Hemp farming is just now picking up in most states, it takes three years with rigorous testing to get a farm certified organic, so in the states that have just begun their programs, be leery of any farms claiming to have been certified organic already.

Growing hemp can be a great crop to incorporate for existing farms. It can be as much of an art as well, depending on what you are growing it for. It is an exciting time in the industry, and there are endless possibilities and opportunities, but they may not always be super straightforward. If you are planning to grow hemp, you should expect a learning curve. There will likely be some failures while figuring out what works and what does not, but one thing to really think about and plan for before you begin farming hemp is really have an idea what you are growing it for, who your end-user or buyer of your hemp will be. With federal legalization of hemp growing, there’s an influx of growers, and the market has a lot of catching up to do. Growing hemp is a lot of work, and as a farmer, you do not want to grow it and not have someone there to buy your hemp.

When Will We See Marijuana Conviction Expungement in Missouri?

A

s marijuana is legalized across the country, some states are expunging low-level marijuana convictions. After all, it makes no sense to have someone sitting in prison or being denied employment or benefits for doing something that is now legal, i.e., possessing a small amount of marijuana. You could argue that no one should be in prison today for possessing large amounts of marijuana. You could even argue that people convicted of growing, possessing, and selling huge amounts of marijuana should be set free immediately because that is what is happening, every day, across large parts of America and here in Missouri, legally.

Illinois, the 11th state in the Union to legalize marijuana for recreational use, began pardoning low-level marijuana “criminals” by the thousands. California has been working at expungement for years. A common thread in both states is that there has been legislation to make mass expungement part of the state’s laws, and rather than pick through the records one at a time, they are using software from Code for America1 to identify the records en masse. So, what is happening in Missouri?

A search of the Legiscan.com2 website (an impartial real-time legislative tracking service) turned up one expungement bill in Missouri: House Bill No. 1385 sponsored

by Missouri House Representative Barbara Washington. Simply put, Bill 1385 aims to expunge any official record of a conviction for possessing 35 grams or less of marijuana.

This bill, although a step in the right direction, is so far off in terms of today’s legal possession amounts that it seems almost absurd.

A medical marijuana patient cardholder in Missouri can now legally possess, with the State’s approval, up to eight ounces of marijuana today. That’s 226.796 grams. That is the amount that should be used to determine the expungement of a possession crime. Wouldn’t that make more sense?

Where Did All the Legalization and Reform Advocates Go?

But Amendment 2 didn’t contain anything about criminal justice reform. No expungement clause. No reparative social justice for those harmed in the failed “war on drugs.” Keep in mind; war is waged on people, not things. Who knows how many low-level possession convictions are on the books? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of Thousands? The fight for criminal law reform and social justice in Missouri has only just begun.

We’re All Criminals

If you’ve ever possessed marijuana in Missouri before you got a patient card, you’re a criminal. Hopefully, you didn’t get caught and don’t have a record. But what if you had? How would your life be different today? Would you still have a job? Benefits?

A family? Freedom?

It’s time to peel that scarlet M off of Missouri’s convicted marijuana “criminals” and let them have the same opportunities afforded Missouri’s medical marijuana patients and newly minted marijuana cultivators, manufacturers, and distributors.

Become a Citizen Advocate

Missouri's legislative session started in January and ends in May. This is the time of year when bills become laws in Missouri.

Now is the time to communicate your opinion to your state legislators. To find out who your local legislators are, visit senate.mo.gov3, punch in your address, and their names will appear. These are the people representing you in the Missouri Legislature. Write them, email them, call them, or go see them. Their job is to listen to you and understand what is important to you and the citizens of the State.

It’s their job to draft bills and pass laws that make sense for Missourians.

A Blueprint for Mass Expungement

Yes, there are expungement laws on the books in Missouri, but as we see here and in other states, only a tiny percentage of people eligible to have their records expunged are getting it done. The reason is that expunge-

ment petitions must be filed one at a time and necessitate hiring an attorney to navigate the bureaucracy of various municipal jurisdictions. States like California and Illinois have found a better way. A way to expunge records by the thousands. Here’s the blueprint for expunging records in Missouri.

1. Pass a state law to expunge all criminal records in Missouri for marijuana possession under 226.796 grams.

2. Engage Code for America’s Clear My Record software to sort through all the criminal records en masse.

3. Make the records available to all the municipalities that carry the convictions.

4. Expunge, pardon, wipe clean, and reverse the convictions that never should have happened in the first place.

Let your legislators know that no one in Missouri should have a marijuana possession conviction on their record for possessing less than 226.796 grams.

Be sure to check out the previous issue of The Evolution Magazine for an introduction about how to approach cannabis conversations with your family and friends in a way that will help keep kids safe and caregivers informed. Then stick around as I continue to address relevant concerns about safety and health, pointing out differences in results from ingestion methods and delivery systems (especially now that medical cannabis is legal in Missouri).

If you put your money where your mouth consumes an edible, results can be unpredictable. THC that you swallow is metabolized by the liver — rather than the bloodstream, like other methods such as inhalation, suppository, sublingual, or topical applications. Once the liver converts THC to 11-Hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-THC), the effect can be potent, more psychoactive, and above all, can be delayed by up to two hours and last eight to twenty-four hours! Ever wonder why you could “trip on edibles” but never smoke enough to get the same feeling? It is because of the one-two punch of the liver metabolism creating a different mind and body experience, combined with the delayed effect.

Now for the contraindications (big fancy word for other existing conditions that serve as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient). Often, over-medication stems from “eating more to feel something,” only to be overwhelmed once the full effect kicks in.

It is always best to avoid eating or drinking cannabis products if there is any chance you

will need to drive or operate heavy machinery or plan to drink heavily.

Combining cannabis edibles with other drugs (legal, prescription, or not) often creates an increased level of intoxication, and decreased inhibition and motor skills function. So pick one. But when you make your choice, remember, cannabis happens to be safer and less addictive than alcohol, opiates, nicotine, meth, and *insert drug name here*. While inscribed records dating as far back as 1500 BCE indicate people have been enjoying their cannabis in countless forms of yummy treats and drinks for thousands of years, written laws in 2020 say you have a responsibility to enjoy them safely.

Despite regulations that prohibit product packaging from appearing to market to children, many edibles still come in the form of hard candy, gummies, cookies, or brownies. Therefore, it is always best for you to keep cannabis-infused treats in a freezer or refrigerator-safe locked container (or at least hide them with the frozen spinach rather than with the ice cream). Show kids the universal cannabis symbol (which California requires on packaging), so they do not accidentally eat or accept infused products. Reiterate to your kids, again and again, if you have to, that cannabis is medicine and for adults only!

This safety concern is the crux of why I implore cannabis businesses and aficionados alike to please never refer to it as “recreational marijuana” because the words matter. It is a corporate and ethical responsibility not to shout, “fun for kids” by calling cannabis “recreational.” Seriously, go look the word up in the dictionary and see for

yourself what is now listed as a definition (sigh). If marijuana is for adults, let’s call it “adult” or “commercial” or “retail,” and “medical” for those kids who have a prescription. But for goodness sake, not “recreational.”

It is still a widespread assumption that people consume cannabis for the sole reason of getting high (sidenote: psychedelic highs became more popular during the rise of hippie culture in the 60s and 70s). But in fact, cannabis can alter your consciousness, increase your appetite, reduce blood pressure, relieve nausea, and reduce spasticity. Affecting short-term memory, which cannabis is shown to do, can be beneficial for PTSD and overcoming loss, as well as unblock traumatic memories.

Cannabis can both cause or reduce anxiety and panic, reduce hostility, promote bodily well-being, and homeostatic health.

Cannabis is palliative, easing pain, but in some studies, it has also been shown to be curative, affecting the underlying cause of the symptoms. This is all to say that cannabis can be part of a healthy lifestyle for wellness, not just sickness, and especially as a harm-reduction technique (i.e., a substitution for more harmful or dangerous substances).

Know what cannabis doesn’t do? It doesn’t cause long-term or permanent cognitive impairment, doesn’t reduce your IQ, nor does it cause dependency (less dependence-forming than coffee, in fact). But it may help you break the cycle of other addictions! Unlike most over the counter medications and prescriptions, cannabis is impossible to fatally overdose. We tend to forget that cannabis has been part of the written human experience — medical, spiritual, and interpersonal — for over 5,000 years.

There is so much more to cover in this continuing parental series; however, we will take a brief pause on human physiology until next month, when we will explore the remaining methods of ingestion, including topicals, sublinguals, suppositories, and tinctures. After that, we will get into the science of cannabis and how it affects the brain.

I know it’s a lot, but all of it is essential knowledge everyone should know before medical cannabis becomes readily available in Missouri.

Growing Cannabis at Home:

The Right Nutrients

T

he topic of plant nutrition is a complex and multi-faceted issue. This article will briefly explain the necessity of using plant nutrition when growing any plant (especially cannabis), an overview of the specific nutrients needed, and an explanation of the differences between organic and synthetic fertilizers. Due to the complex nature of this topic, I’ve included several print and web resources for further reading on this subject at the bottom of this article.

Whether growing in soil or hydroponically, nutrients are fundamentally important to helping a plant to grow, and in certain circumstances (such as cannabis), aid in the production of the desired yield of fruit and flowers (buds). Plants need approximately 16-20 essential nutrients to achieve their full potential. When one or more of these crucial nutrients aren’t available, the plant demonstrates signs of deficiencies, which ultimately result in a weaker, sicker, and often dead plant. For further clarification, nutrients can be divided into three sub-categories: Macronutrients, Secondary Nutrients, and Micronutrients.

When growing in soil, especially “super-soil,” the plant can receive its nutritional benefits from the within the soil itself, of course, depending on the quality of the soil, amendments used, and other considerations.

However, when growing hydroponically and using reverse-osmosis (or distilled) water, virtually no nutrients are available, and all nutrients must be added to the water for the plant to receive any benefits.

What follows is a brief and abbreviated examination of the essential nutrients plants need for desired growth.

Essential Macronutrients This group is available to plants in the air and water, but to achieve their full benefit, well-oxygenated water and sufficient levels of Co2 are required.

N — Nitrogen: Needed in higher quantities during vegetative and early flowering, and­essential in the development of all types of foliage and protein production P — Phosphorus: Required primarily during flowering at approximately half-ratio during the vegetative phase and fundamental in the development of the roots, flowers, and seed production K— Potassium: Essential to overall plant health and is required for the absorption of water C — Carbon H — Hydrogen O — Oxygen Essential Secondary Nutrients This group is needed in quantities less than macronutrients, but significantly more than micronutrients, and are often made unavailable to plants (especially Cannabis) when proper pH is not maintained.

Ca — Calcium: Needed for the transporting of most other nutrients (Nectar for the Gods is a calcium-based nutrient line with this purpose in mind) and absorption, is often most available through Calcium Nitrate (CaNO3), which is found in most fertilizer programs.

Mg — Magnesium: One of the most critical components of chlorophyll.

S — Sulfur: Also crucial in the transport of chlorophyll and assists with plant metabolism and transpiration.

Essential Micronutrients The remaining nutrients in this list are needed by plants in extremely low quantities. While often found in quality nutrient programs, except for Iron (Fe), which can be easily supplemented using Chelated Iron (or other appropriate remedies), deficiencies related to these nutrients are not common.

Time To Grow Cu — Copper: Helps with the development of plant proteins and helps the strengthening of stems, branches, and stalks.

Zn — Zinc: Also aids in the development of stems, leaves, and branches, and as a plant matures, more zinc is needed.

B — Boron: Responsible for the development of growth of root tips and helps plants absorb calcium and transports sugars throughout the plant.

Mo — Molybdenum: Aids in the processing of nitrogen.

Fe — Iron: Fundamental in the production of chlorophyll. The deficiencies of Iron are most commonly presented as yellowing of the leaves between the veins (called Nueinal Chlorosis).

Mn — Manganese: Important to chlorophyll production and photosynthesis. Also crucial to enzymatic interactions.

There are also trace minerals that can be essential in plant production, including the following: Cl — Chlorine Si — Silicon Co — Cobalt Like with any other aspect of growing, there is a growing number of nutrients available for the home grower. While we haven’t examined every single nutrient company available, we have researched and/ or experimented with many, and have found there are pros and cons to each of them. The first factor a grower must consider is whether to use “organic” nutrients or “synthetic” or “chemical” (salt-based) nutrients.

Organic Nutrients As the name suggests, organic fertilizers come from organic sources.

Examples of organic nutrients include natural amendments (glacial rock dust, gypsum, bloodmeal, fishmeal, feather meal, etc.). In addition to those sources, many companies distribute bottled organic nutrients, including Nectar for the Gods, Grow More, Primordial Solutions, Roots Organics, Down to Earth Organics, Mother Earth, Technaflora, NPK Industries, Earth Juice, Grotek, and Vegamatrix.

There are pros and cons to any of these nutrient regimes, and it’s important to do some research into each to find the product(s) that will work best with your growing system and your personal preference.

While there are plenty of exceptions to this, organic nutrients often are not a good fit for some hydroponic systems such as Aeroponics, Drip, and Deep-Water Culture (DWC) because natural residues often clog or damage parts of a hydroponic system. Organic fertilizers are always a great pairing with soil growing.

Synthetic Nutrients Salt-Based (synthetic or chemical) fertilizers are scientifically produced using advanced chemistry to create nutrients that possess the exact specifications needed for plant growth. Often, nitrogen is synthesized using the “Haber-Bosch Process,” while phosphate and potassium are derived from minerals. While there are many benefits (and many drawbacks) to using chemical fertilizers, one of the most compelling reasons is in the exact ratio of nutrients, often resulting in better results and subsequently larger yields (but not always). Often a grower has much more specific control over every aspect of plant nutrition when using these types of nutrients versus organic nutrients, which have a less specific orientation.

Whether using synthetic or organic nutrients, unless a grower is using a Super-Soil, it’s imperative that some nutrients be used. Unfortunately, new growers are often inclined to use too much nutrition (thinking more equals more), when in actuality, having a more moderate or conservative approach to plant nutrition usually equals better results. Most growers find they need to commit to a significant amount of research before choosing a specific nutrition program. Growers must locate nutrients that will work with their specific hydroponic (or soil) system, makes sense to their lifestyle, isn’t cost-prohibitive, has a good reputation, and is readily available for purchase. Most Hydro-Grow stores will carry a wide variety of both organic and synthetic nutrients. Find a store that will help you with products that will work best with your growing system. With a little bit of reading, the right decision can be reached — your home-grow plants will ultimately benefit in the end.

A

utoflowering cannabis: what is it? These plants have long been cultivated medicinally in Europe. They are now becoming exceedingly popular among medical growers in our community here in the U.S.; especially to those patients brand new to cannabis as a whole. So why is autoflowering cannabis all the rage? As noted in our January 2020 article, we first incorporated autoflowering varietals into our breeding program due to a high volume of patient requests. To this day, autoflower seeds remain in higher demand than any other seed we offer. So, I want to give an introduction to how the original growing conditions of autoflowering cannabis helped to develop traits in the plants that make these varietals an excellent choice for patient-cultivators and their medical gardens.

In the early part of the 20th century, a Russian botanist named Janischewsky discovered landrace cannabis plants growing along the Volga River in southern Siberia, a region of Russia known for its harsh climate, semi-arid soil, and extremely restricted growing season.

Janischewsky noticed that the plants he found differed markedly from the other cannabis varietals, then taxonomically classified: they were smaller, thrived in nutrient-deficient soil, were characterized by sparser and weedier growth and an unusual flower shape, and perhaps most interestingly, had adapted to the short growing season by flowering based on plant maturity instead of the light cycle. While some viewed this diminutive canna-cousin as an unwelcome interloper on the breeding scene, potentially bringing undesirable traits to established lines while also presenting atypical breeding challenges, others saw potential. These breeders began working autoflowering lines to marry the autoflowering varietal’s best qualities, such as structural hardiness, natural pest resistance,

SEEDS and fast flower time, with characteristics from its photoperiod counterparts, such as a more controllable and predictable yield, higher total cannabinoid percentages, and diverse terpene profiles.

The result? A compact little cannabis powerhouse, a pangea of cultivated varietals, particularly attractive to home growers and medical patients. In fact, the chief characteristics — size, morphology, flower shape, and life span — that prompted some cannabis connoisseurs to reject autoflowering varietals in the first place have the potential to make autoflowering plants a mainstay of any patient-cultivator’s medical garden. Let’s dive right into why autoflowering cannabis might be the right choice for you.

Autoflowering cannabis plants are natural space-savers, a boon to the average patient-cultivator with limited canopy space but a need for high-quality, effective medicine.

The typically smaller size of the autoflower makes it an ideal choice for those with canopy restrictions, as well as a manageable option for patients with limited mobility. While it is true that the small relative size of autoflowering varietals translates to a lower average yield when compared to larger, photoperiod cultivars, the former’s compact profile also means that it fits neatly into smaller growing environments. Practically speaking, the autoflower’s compactness indicates that a home cultivator with a smaller canopy can fit more autoflowering plants in the same footprint, generating a greater selection of medical cannabis to sample and with which to stock a medicinal herb drawer while seeking the best relief for ailments. For example, a space that houses two to three photoperiod plants per growing cycle can house six to eight autoflowering cultivars by simply adjusting pot size accordingly. Even taking into consideration Missouri’s limited per-patient plant count,

by Jason Braud each patient-cultivator could theoretically grow six different strains simultaneously, all while minimizing labor and canopy footprint. The fast flower time of these unique cannabis varietals also allows for a greater diversity of strains available medicinally to any given patient, who could grow an average of 24-plus strains per year if need be with these space considerations and growing method.

Fast flower time means more than increased strain variety in your medicinal herb drawer, however; the autoflowering plant’s naturally short life cycle also makes it an especially hardy specimen, resistant to pests and diseases that infest and infect photoperiod cultivars due to the latter’s longer life span. True to autoflowering cannabis’ feral ancestors, modern autoflowering varietals finish in as little as 60 days, some taking up to 120 days. A short life span furthermore translates to less overall labor and less room for error, making these varietals a lower maintenance option for patient-cultivators short on time and precious energy.

Of course, the quality of the autoflowering plants you grow depends on the seeds from which they sprout. CANNA MATCHA GREEN TEA BALLS PALEO, GLUTEN-FREE, NO ADDED SUGAR

ith the new year, I decided to start 2020 by changing a few things in my diet. I have been eating healthier and infusing more health beneficial foods. I have to rave about Matcha green tea because it has been a pivotal ingredient in my new diet! Matcha green tea is of Japanese origin and specifically pertains to the way it is grown and harvested. It is shade-grown and then harvested without the stems. Only the young leaves are used, which are ground into a fine powder that is used for making tea drinks, but I love using it in everything! The health benefits are amazing! Matcha green tea is packed full of antioxidants that help the body rid itself of free radicals and cancer-causing elements. Matcha tea essentially is a gentle daily detox for your liver as well, cleaning it and keeping it nice and healthy.

Matcha is also high in epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). I know, if you are not familiar with the term, it’s a huge word, but it means cancer-preventing. In tests with rats, EGCG actually helped kill off prostate cancer cells and has been effective with other types of cancer cells as well! This is huge for those wanting to be proactive and use preventative care, or for those who may be fighting chronic illness right now.

Since I have replaced my morning coffee with a Matcha green tea latte, my stomach and intestinal issues have ceased, and I am feeling much more vibrant. Matcha does have caffeine, so I’m not losing out on my morning wake-me-up.

The caffeine is actually higher in Matcha than in your regular coffee brew, but the stimulation feels gentler to me. It is said that prolonged use of Matcha can boost brain function.

Maybe it is the caffeine, but it really helps me focus without getting the jitters. It is packed with L-theanine, which helps stimulate brain waves and promotes easier relaxation.

Something to remember when using Matcha in your recipes and your daily intake. Although I am a high anxiety person, and that is why I have an MMJ card, this caffeine buzz is easier for me to handle than coffee.

So now, we know why we want to use Matcha in our infusions for daily consumption, but how do we do it? I like to use coconut oil or MCT oil when I am infusing for edibles because these two oils transfer the cannabinoids the best through the body and into the bloodstream for the highest absorbency possible. It’s like when you're taking your daily vitamin. You want to make sure your body is absorbing as many nutrients as possible right? So, for this recipe I am going to use an infused coconut oil. You can google how to make it; there are so many different methods. I use my infuser machine for easy decarbing and infusing, but you can use a crockpot just as easily. When I am making edibles for myself, I like to microdose at 5 mg per serving, but you can add as much to the recipe as you see fit. That’s the beauty of making your own! I also like to throw in some CBD isolate as well because it counters the photoactive effect of the THC and makes a well-balanced edible for my own daily consumption, but as I said, this is your oyster. You can make it just the way you want it! Here is the recipe.

When I think about all of the health benefits of cannabis and why we use it for its medicinal purposes, it makes sense to incorporate a little Matcha green tea into my cannabis regimen because the two complement each other tremendously.

With the leading cause of death in America being heart disease, why wouldn’t you want to use some of this Matcha in your daily routine? Aside from all of these astonishing health benefits, it can also help you lose weight!

Studies have found that Matcha helps to boost the metabolism and aid the body in fat burning! Now that’s my cup of tea right there!

COOKING WITH CANNABIS Ingredients:

Makes 12 Balls 1 cup Dates 2 tsp Matcha green tea powder 1 heaping tbsp infused Coconut oil 1 cup Almonds, raw

Mixture to roll the balls in

● 2 tsp Matcha green tea, powder ● 1/4 cup coconut

Great for St. Patrick’s Day or any day. Pop one in your mouth and enjoy a quick energy snack with benefits.

Directions

1. Soak the dates in hot water for at least fifteen minutes.

2. While the dates soak, make the Coconut/Matcha mixture to roll the balls in, add the 1/4 cup coconut and 2 teaspoons of Matcha powder to your food processor, and turn on until you have a fine green powder. Remove and set aside.

3. In the empty food processor, pulse almonds and infused coconut oil until you have a fine consistency 4. Drain the dates and add them with the rest of the ingredients to your food processor.

5. Process for 45–60 seconds at a time, scraping down the sides in between.

6. Add a little extra coconut oil if necessary.

7. Roll the mixture into balls.

8. Coat the balls in the coconut/Matcha powder you made in step 2 as you go.

9. Store in the refrigerator. Yum!

Contracts, paperwork, hiring, building, and insurance all seem pretty straightforward, even if difficult. But as some are finding out, these areas have turned into complicated and scary new worlds, almost overnight. Insurance, confusing before throwing in an illegal, controlled substance, has now become almost incomprehensible. Many operators are left believing they have adequately insured their risks, when they haven’t.

In many ways, the cannabis industry is different among its peers. Not only is it subject to completely different and specific rules and regulations, but it is also unique in the way other areas of commerce operate in that it is considered illegal by the federal government overseeing them. Banking, alone, has had to adapt, with new legislation having to be approved by Congress to allow them to work with Marijuana-Related Businesses (MRBs) operating legally under state law. Insurance has become so complicated that the issue of banking is only one of the specific risks an insurance company will analyze in writing commercial insurance. Adding to the trouble of writing coverage for something entirely new is that we can’t rely on the experiences and mistakes of states with previous cannabis legalization. Many of these cannabis markets have only now begun to open up to insuring canna-businesses and are, themselves, navigating the murky waters of the Missouri cannabis industry and its accompanying rules.

This is the reason GreenSeed saw the need for a unique service in insurance, managing insurance, AND compliance. It is literally a full-time job understanding how to do it right.

With this in mind, there are a few things MRB

owner’s need to consider when purchasing their business insurance.

First, you must remember that not all insurance agencies are created equal. Some agencies sell for one company only, and some agencies contract with multiple carriers to give clients a choice in coverages and on price. No matter the type, most insurance agencies do not sell cannabis business insurance. Cannabis Business Insurance — from now on, think of those words together. You are not simply a cannabis operator who needs business insurance. You are a cannabis operator who needs a cannabis tailored business policy. These are specialized and created by the carrier to sidestep another industry-specific hurdle; exclusions, exclusions, exclusions.

Nearly all General Liability and Property policies include exclusions as to what will be denied coverage in the event of a loss, and in nearly all of these policies are a variation of one or more of three exclusions for illegality, contraband, and scheduled/controlled substances. As you can see, these don’t exactly suit our industry. Even a “smoking products” exclusion could be interpreted broadly and result in the denial of a claim. In fact, an MRBs coverage is effectively void with one of these exclusions, and claims won’t even be considered. Because of this, traditional insurance agencies cannot cover cannabis industry operators unless they are now covering the cannabis industry as its own, specific market.

Their regular carriers don’t have policies for this type of risk.

It’s also important to consider whether your insurance agency has a vested interest in this community. Are they looking only to capitalize on a new market, or are they members of the community providing their neighbors with a service that they need to be safe? If they are dedicated to the product and the patients, as we are, they are more likely to be open and honest about your needs and what they are capable of providing.

Along with exclusions are the specific risks each MRB will have unique to themselves based on what they do, how they do it, and the product they handle. For example, a cultivator may also need crop insurance just as other agricultural industries do, but they will need cannabis crop coverage. Think about it. This is a federally illegal substance, literally worth its weight in gold.

Because of the cash-heavy nature of the industry, additional theft and crime coverage would be wise for some MRBs, and the subject of security and transportation should always require special attention.

Kevin Schnell, of KC Cann Transport, LLC, says many facets of security, such as entry/exit procedures and cameras, become more serious when concerning a cannabis-related business. "Access control doors are frequently circumvented by employees (or suspects) propping open doors, taping latches or lodging items in the locking mechanism and blocking the door, or preventing the door from latching properly.

Also, employees not ensuring doors latch behind them can lead to an unsecured door or providing suspects an opportunity to "piggyback" behind the employee," Schnell said. This is the type of thing that will require special attention in our industry, and only with a provider or transporter specializing in cannabis, are you going to get the best, customized approaches in mitigating those risks. That’s what we’re here to educate you about.

A big concern for MRBs is suits involving injury or damages caused by the use or mislabeling of a cannabis product. In these situations, legal expenses can quickly pummel a small business without the right insurance coverage, so property policies need to be tailored to represent the specific product an MRB is working with, or rather, the form of cannabis being transacted.

Even if you’re happy with your agent, and they’re finding cannabis-specific policies for you, it is always smart to double-check your risks, coverages, and price. HEMP FARMING Missouri Hemp Program Faces Challenges

And Opportunities

020 is an exciting year for Missouri growers who want the opportunity to cultivate hemp. After the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill that removed hemp as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. Missouri legislators quickly followed with Bill SB 133, which repealed the Industrial Hemp Agricultural Pilot program.

Bill SB 133 made it legal to process hemp in Missouri as of August 28, 2019, and set the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) on a path forward for producer and seed and propagule regulations and licensure.

On January 2, the MDA began accepting applications for two licenses;

In speaking with many different growers that are contemplating cultivating Hemp this year, the primary concern is, “Can I make money at this?” The answer is YES, but proceed with caution. Here is why.

Finally, if the results of your grow show that you have greater than .3% THC in your crop, the entire lot associated with that test must be destroyed. This, as well as the aforementioned risks and high investments that go into making a high-yield crop, should be taken into consideration when determining whether to grow hemp, and, if so, how large of an operation.

Risks aside, it is truly an exciting time in Missouri for traditional farmers, cannabis growers, and entrepreneurs as they venture into the endless possibilities with this new commodity. On the market today, consumers

Seed and Propagule Permit: Permit issued

by MDA authorizing a person to sell, distribute, or offer for sale any viable industrial hemp in Missouri, including propagules (transplants, cuttings, clones, seedlings, etc.) or seed.

Missouri has instituted a commercial program versus an industrial research program, as seen in many other states. A research program requires licensees to submit a research plan to the state and typically limits the commercial opportunities for growers.

Under Missouri’s program, growers have the opportunity to grow as many or few acres as they would like, as well as capitalize on all aspects of the revenue streams, including smokable flower, biomass processed into oil, and retail sales of consumables, topicals, and other hemp-derived products.

As of January 17, the Missouri Department of Agriculture had received 123 applications and had approved 38. When asked the primary reason applicants are being denied or asked to resubmit, the department stated, “We’ve asked producers to ensure that their map quality matches the requirements we’ve posted online at agriculture.mo.gov and many have been working to resubmit those maps with their applications.” The department further stated, “We’ve been hearing from producers that they are pleased with the application process and turnaround time so far.” In addition to reviewing applications, MDA has 38

Of course, this is strictly for hemp that is being grown for CBD or smokable flower. If the plants are not spaced appropriately, and therefore unable to form a canopy from one plant to another, weeding will be a constant nuisance for the grower throughout the season. It is critical to keep weeds down to ensure they are not taking in the nutrients from the soil, overcasting hemp and blocking sunlight, or increasing the chances of fungal or other diseases prevalent in weeds. Aside from the labor force required to monitor and maintain the plants properly, there is now a surplus of biomass on the market, making it more difficult to find buyers. Growers will need to work diligently to find a processor and/or buyer to ensure they have somewhere to take their crops after harvest. Higher quality flower is in demand as consumers are becoming much more educated. Therefore, it’s better to have a smaller crop of higher quality and yield versus planting acres upon acres and not being able to find a buyer.

s I held the very first extraction this past October from the first Kansas-grown Hemp at the very first operational Missouri extraction facility — the surreality of this historic event began to set in. Damn, we have come a long way, and this is only the beginning.

The Poindexter family has been farming for over 40 years in Missouri.

“In the past, we have typically farmed more conventional crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. In addition to crops, we had always raised cattle and hogs when we were younger,” said Luke.

Luke’s sister, Michelle, is the person who interested the family in hemp farming. Luke says, “She called up both bothers to ask their interest, and we discussed whether our parents would actually be okay with this, given it is cannabis. Much to our surprise, our parents were on board and started doing their own research immediately. Our family members have experience in farming, sales, marketing, operations, and other skills that made this venture a natural fit.”

How did a Missouri-based farm get involved with the first round of Kansas grown Hemp?

“A lot of blood, sweat, and tears from a lot of good people went into growing these plants, and now, we finally have a product that we proudly send to market.”

A joyous event, but it did not come easy for the Poindexter’s or many first-round Kansas hemp farmers. The first round of Kansas-grown hemp was plagued with bad weather and harsh learning curves. “The greenhouse/propagation side was probably our biggest challenge,” said Luke. “We had always planted seeds directly into the field and let mother nature take over. Controlling an indoor grow environment was not really in our wheelhouse and definitely caused us to struggle.

Beyond that, the toughest obstacle would have to be the rain. This area received unheard of amounts of rainfall last year, which made it very difficult for all first-time growers.

“We started with 10 acres; however, with the flooding that occurred, we ended up with closer to 3–3.5 acres,” he said. “We’re still drying 40

“We initially started preparing our Missouri land under the assumption that the Missouri bill and regulations would be in place for the 2019 growing season,” explained Luke. “Once we realized that wasn’t going to happen, we had to pivot quickly and reached out to another family of farmers in Kansas to see if they were interested in a joint venture this year. We were very fortunate that they were eager to try a new crop with us, which allowed our family the opportunity to grow hemp in Kansas and start gaining experience.”

Missouri rolled out its rules and regulations for the first-round of 2020 hemp farming near the end of 2019. The first round of Kansas grown hemp prepared the Poindexters for Missouri’s hemp grow. “From the farming side, we plan on having more labor than we had last year. We drastically underestimated the need for man hours,” Luke said. “We would like to continue building relationships with local farmers and provide them with cultivation guidance based on our processing experience. We also want to make sure that we act as a conduit for sales allowing farmers to grow and profit from an agricultural crop that was not available before. We’ve already been approached by many Missouri farmers who are preparing for their first 2020 hemp grow.

This allows us to better forecast the potential biomass that we will need to ramp up our equipment and accommodate demand.”

As farmers like the Poindexters find unique ways to prepare for this new world of hemp farming in Missouri, the real question boils down to the preparedness of every single new farmer entering this innovative industry. With so many risks associated with this new cash crop,

BECOME A “QUALIFIED PATIENT”

Treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy

A

ny discussion of marijuana treatment of diabetic neuropathy begins with a brief discussion regarding the types of diabetes.

Type 1: This condition occurs as a result of the pancreas’ inability to produce efficient insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes produce no insulin and are, therefore, required to take insulin injections.

Type 2: With Type 2 diabetes, individuals can produce insulin but in insufficient quantities, causing a lack of glucose in the body.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes ● Increased hunger ● Dry mouth ● Frequent urination ● Fatigue ● Blurred vision ● Increased thirst ● Itching of the skin ● Weight gain

Medical research on marijuana and diabetes treatment Actually, there have been a number of studies conducted on the connection between marijuana and diabetes. Current studies do show that cannabis is beneficial for those individuals already diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

In 2013, the results of a five-year study were released, indicating those individuals who had used cannabis had 16% lower fasting insulin levels as well as 17% lower levels of insulin resistance and higher levels of HDL-C. Marijuana users appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers. Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and the individuals in the study appeared to be less resistant to the natural insulin produced by their bodies. This study also found lower prevalence rates of obesity and diabetes mellitus in marijuana users compared with people who have never used marijuana. This suggests a relationship between cannabinoids and peripheral metabolic processes. This study was published in the American Journal of Medicine, 2013. The authors were Penner EA, Buettner H, and Mittleman MA. Assuming marijuana has a positive effect on people with diabetes, we need to discuss how you dose marijuana for optimum effects 42

of improving your diabetes mellitus. It is imperative that you, as a patient, discuss with your physician the use of cannabis. It is known that one of the major risk factors of marijuana use with diabetes is hypoglycemia, in which marijuana may cause your blood glucose (sugar) levels to drop too low.

A very common side effect of uncontrolled diabetes is neuropathic pain, or more commonly called neuropathy. Neuropathic pain manifests itself as a stabbing or tingling sensation, especially involving extremities (fingers/hands and toes/feet). Obviously, each diabetic has some degree of neuropathic pain, which can vary greatly depending on the chronicity of diabetes as well as the failure of treatment programs.

In those individuals experiencing moderate to severe neuropathies, pain can be debilitating, preventing you from performing activities of daily living. There are other causes of neuropathic pain, including amputation, alcoholism, chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, shingles/herpes, spinal cord or nerve compression as well as thyroid problems, and more. Common to all of these conditions is chronic pain.

Pharmaceutical treatment for neuropathic pain is usually anti-depressants, anti-convulsant drugs, and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, for those with severe neuropathies, opioids, or other strong pain medications are prescribed. The problem with any pharmaceutical treatment program, neuropathic pain is difficult to treat, and sometimes, the pharmaceutical drugs may even make the condition worse, resulting in increased disability.

Although there is no known cure for diabetic neuropathy, treatment is focused on pain relief, inhibiting progression of the disease, and reducing the risk for complications. Obviously, lifestyle changes are necessary and include smoking cessation, weight loss, proper sleep and exercise, a healthy diet, avoidance of alcohol, and maintain proper blood sugar levels as well as blood pressure levels.

In discussing which marijuana strains work better for diabetes, understand that while specific marijuana strains may not affect diabetes, marijuana may help reduce your blood glucose levels and help you feel better or reduce stress, helping you to improve and better manage your symptoms.

Here is a list of several strains that individuals with diabetes and related neuropathy should consider:

Harlequin

This strain seems to be a very good choice for diabetic patients because of its high CBD and low THC content (5 to 2 ratio). Although this strain has a 75% Sativa genetic makeup, it does provide feelings of relaxation without gluing you to the couch or leaving you feeling intoxicated. Also, this high CBD cannabis strain will not produce a heavily psychoactive high and provides a perfect relaxation option, which is important in dealing with stress, while still achieving mental clarity.

Green Crack

This is probably the best daytime cannabis strain as it allows you to stay focused while treating fatigue and depression.

Blue Dream

This is probably one of the most widely used, all-purpose cannabis strains. Blue Dream has been a preferred choice for people who have diabetes. Since it is a Sativa dominant hybrid, it is ideal for lowering stress levels, improving depression as well as headaches, which are often associated with diabetes.

Cannatonic

Cannatonic is probably the most popular marijuana strain for its noted healing properties, again due to its high quantity of CBD (5-18%). Typically this cannabis strain rarely has more than 6% THC content, which makes it wellsuited for those individuals who prefer not to experience a lot of psychoactive effects. This is a hybrid cannabis strain that can be used for treatment of a number of medical conditions, including diabetes, anxiety, chronic pain, and muscle spasm.

roduct security is one of the first things those entering the Medical Cannabis industry must address. Dispensaries, cultivators, manufacturing, transportation, and lab take note. A one-million-dollar marijuana heist from a Portland, OR, manufacturer was caught on camera as the thieves cut through bars, dropped a ladder down, and made off with the product. A Washington state cultivation was the target of $250,000 worth of marijuana that was ready to be sold as the thieves cut through heavy steel siding, sheetrock, and insulation. Three hundred thousand dollars of marijuana was stolen from a San Diego dispensary as thieves smashed windows and broke through several doors to get to the product. The common denominator in all three heists is the fact that none of the product was secured in a vault.

Why does placing your product in a UL listed, Class M vault make it more secure? A UL listed vault must meet the most stringent security standards, which include the burglary resistant guidelines set by Underwriters Laboratories. Underwriters Laboratories is a global safety certification company that performs safety testing for many U.S. products in circulation today. In-plant inspections are conducted on every facility to ensure that the minimum requirements for burglary resistance have been met. These requirements set the length of time they can withstand an attack by common mechanical tools, such as electric tools, cutting torches, or a combination of these means. The ratings based on the total time to effect entry are as

follows: Class M – ¼ hour, Class 1 – ½ hour, Class 2 – 1 hour, and Class 3 – 2 hours. A vault must be utilized with a professional security system. A 24-hour security monitored system notifies law enforcement that a breach has occurred while the vault securely holds the product until law enforcement arrives.

Sorry, this is not a Vault! Dispensaries will need a minimum of an 8x10-foot room vault.

A modular vault is custom-made to the facility specifications. Each panel weighs between 600 to 1000 pounds and must be machine lifted. A UL-listed, Class 5-GSA rated door that is designed for the highest level of asset protection completes the assembly. GSA standards are a set of modular vault security standards mandated by the U.S. General Services Administration. The doors are designed and specified for use by all members of the Department of Defense.

ensure the marijuana is safely stored without exposure to light, air, or any other external influences that could cause a loss of potency to the product. A major benefit besides the security of installing a modular vault, it is not considered a cost of new construction. A modular or standalone vault is considered an asset and can, therefore, be depreciated.

While the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has plenty of security regulations, surprisingly, a vault is not listed in the requirements mandated by the DHSS for the State of Missouri.

Ensuring your product is safely stored is the responsibility of the business owner as well as preventing diversion into the illegal market.

The easiest way to do both is to store your product in a 24-hour security monitored vault. An 8x10 vault comes in, depending on the layout of the facility, roughly between 24K to 29K. A vault is a big-ticket item in the build-out of a facility, but one that can give peace of mind knowing the product is safely secured at all times.
