73,929 Patients for 18 Open Dispensaries

n January 15, Governor Parson and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) announced the activation of Phase 1B - Tier 1 for COVID-19 vaccinations in Missouri. As part of this announcement, the state prioritizes getting the vaccine to “all remaining patient-facing healthcare providers.”

According to DHSS, this announcement will allow patient-facing medical marijuana dispensary staff to be eligible for the vaccine immediately. For those interested, details about how to access vaccinations can be found at www.MOStopsCovid.com.

“As we travel around the state visiting facilities, we just want to say how proud we are that this industry is pulling out all the stops to ensure the health and safety of patients,” said MoCann Trade. “At each facility, we see masks being worn, social distancing being practiced, and a safe and welcoming environment for patients, many with underlying health conditions, being established. Please continue to be leaders in your community as vaccinations become available.”

As of January 11, the DHSS reports that 73,929 patients have been approved for Missouri medical cannabis cards. This number far exceeds original predictions for patient numbers. According to the doctors that we surveyed to date, there remains a continuous stream of patients seeking medical cards.

Additionally, 25 dispensaries have been approved for operation, and roughly 18 open for business now, with the remainder planning to open within the next 30-60 days. More dispensaries will be approved to operate this month as the race to open a total of 192 dispensaries for business continues. It’s widely reported that Missouri has moved through the licensing process for approving businesses and opening faster than any other state.

If you have yet to visit a dispensary, you are going to be quite amazed. These are not your proverbial “Pot Shop’s;” but instead hi-tech facilities that include everything from state-of-the-art security, magnificent interior design, tablet and large electronic menu boards, awesome display cases and streamlined checkout procedures.

What you don’t see are the hi-tech and state-of-the-art cultivation, manufacturing, and testing labs that make it possible to fill those dispensary shelves with product/medicine. These businesses have spent millions to build and operate their businesses, ultimately providing you with the best possible medicines found anywhere in the county.

We salute all the cannabis industry leaders here in Missouri. You have thus far provided top-shelf cannabis as an alternative medicine to all the patients seeking it. This year, 2021, promises to be a very exciting year for those within the industry and the consumers anxious to legally enter a medical cannabis dispensary.

Consuming Medical Marijuana to Train Cops?

That’s Exactly What Extract-ED Plans to Do on March 1st.

urrently, 11 states have legalized cannabis for adult (recreational) use and 33 for medicinal use.

Though Missouri was not the first state to legalize, it can be the first to integrate the cannabis industry and law enforcement. Now that Missouri has legalized medical cannabis, law enforcement officers are likely to contact persons who have consumed and possess “legal” medical cannabis products more frequently. It’s essential that officers are educated on “legal” cannabis, patient rights, cannabis consumption, and the effects of cannabis use to protect patients.

Extract-ED LLC was established in 2018 by Ryan Hutton, a full-time law enforcement officer (11 years). “As an officer, I saw a real need to educate law enforcement in areas which they do not receive training regarding Missouri’s newly legalized medical cannabis,” said Hutton. “At the time we launched Extract-ED, Missouri had just legalized medical marijuana. We recognized a training deficiency about medical marijuana for law enforcement, which is unfair not only to police officers but also to the medical patients they may encounter. We quickly realized that we could not provide this training alone and knew that we would need help from the medical marijuana industry. To our pleasant surprise, the industry quickly stepped forward to help, which has given us this unique opportunity to connect and educate law enforcement about Missouri’s legal cannabis industry.”

Today, Extract-ED provides training to law enforcement, prosecutors, and civilian entities in various Missouri medical marijuana laws, rules, and regulations topics. This training is presented by current or former law enforcement officers who are considered experts in their fields. Its aim is to provide this education to law enforcement officers across Missouri and continue its efforts to bridge the gap 12

between law enforcement, the legal medical cannabis patients, and the industry.

Hutton’s Cannabis “Green Lab” training is a new idea that provides vital law enforcement training as cannabis legalization continues nationwide. What is Green Lab? When officers are taught how to recognize alcohol impairment, training often consists of what’s called “Wet Labs.” A Wet Lab is where volunteers are dosed with alcohol to various levels.

Officers then administer sobriety tests on the volunteers to determine if they are impaired.

This training helps officers identify and differentiate between those who have only drunk alcohol and those more impacted and “under the influence” of alcohol. Green Lab works the same; however, cannabis is used instead of alcohol.

are most likely not impaired. They may smell like alcohol, but that is not illegal. Likewise, with the medical cannabis program, patients may smell like marijuana — not illegal — instead, impairment by cannabis is what officers should be concerned about.

How Does a Green Lab Work?

Qualified volunteer patients will consume their medical cannabis in a private setting.

Once the administration is complete, patient volunteers will be escorted by Extract-ED instructors to the classroom. Officers will administer field sobriety tests on volunteers.

These tests will be an excellent opportunity for officers and qualified patients to interact in a positive educational setting. The amount of cannabis used, how it was consumed, impairment indicators — if any, will be recorded by the instructor and reviewed with the student officers and the volunteer patients.

Once the patient volunteers are released from the training, the Extract-ED team will provide safe transportation home.

What is the Goal of this Training?

What’s the Purpose?

Despite a person’s thoughts on cannabis use or law enforcement, we can all agree that everyone’s safety on the roadways is essential.

The purpose of a Green Lab is to teach officers the difference between someone who has consumed cannabis and someone who is overly impaired by cannabis. Think in terms of alcohol. If someone drinks one drink (a 12 oz beer, 2 oz of liquor, 5 oz of wine), they

Such help from the cannabis industry, facilities, and patient volunteers is the first step forward to help bridge the gap. Also, both the OXG LLC cultivation facility and From the Earth dispensary will be giving officers enrolled in this training tours of its facilities as part of officer education. The tours will allow officers to ask questions and learn more about legalized medical cannabis from cannabis experts. This joint training is Missouri’s chance to lead the USA by example and show other states how law enforcement and the cannabis industry can learn from one another and build healthy, long-lasting relationships, which has not been offered or possible until now.

How To

Early Method for Seed Sexing...

eed projects can be incredibly fulfilling. They give you the opportunity to grow strains that no one else has. They can grow bigger than their cloned counterparts because they have their taproot, and they are easier to come by in states that don’t have dispensaries widely selling clones. The obvious choice for most growers is to opt for feminized seeds.

There are a lot of methods for creating feminized seeds. Incredibly reputable breeders have seed formulas down to a fine science.

The downsides are that the feminized seeds are less stable than regular seeds regardless of how well they are bred.

The basics are that male and female seeds are bred from a male plant pollinating a female plant. The seeds are then both male and female seeds, the same way that a man and a woman can have either a male or female child. A feminized seed is produced from a female plant that is stressed on purpose, and that pollen is used to pollinate another female plant creating female seeds — no male was involved. The seeds created from the same plant that is stressed to produce the pollen aren’t kept or sold as feminized seeds because they are incredibly prone to hermaphroditism.

Germinating regular seeds and finding a female will allow you the most stable genetics. You can also use feminized seeds and never have an issue, but it raises the odds, and the same plant might perform poorly when faced with the stressors of growing outdoors if you were to move it outside when the season permits. So that’s something to keep in mind and keep an eye on.

When you find a female plant that you like, the next step is to clone it to keep that strain around, so you have it as long as you want it.

However, before any of that, you will need to determine the sex of your plant. When the 18

plant reaches a certain age of maturity, typically between 6 and 10 weeks, you can check the nodes for early flowering pistils. The only sure-fire way to really tell is to flower out the plant and watch for the gender to reveal itself either in the form of a pollen sac (the precursor to a pollen flower) or pistils on a female — the hairs that you see during bud growth.

● Next, place the entire chamber under a 12/12 light cycle (12 hours darkness, 12 hours of light). Either under a light as small as a veg t5 strip or if you are in flowering in another tent or room already, just put the tray in there off to the side.

Here’s an easy method for determining sex that will prevent you from flowering out the entire plant just to have to cut it down midway through and risk seeding out your grow.

Female Male ● When your plant reaches maturity, within 4-8 weeks, depending on the strain, take the top from the plant if you are topping your plants or at the very least take a robust clip of a branch and prepare it the same way you would a clone. ● Dip the bottom of the stem in a rooting solution for good measure and put them in a rooting medium. Any will work, but I use the Root Riot style rooting plugs. ● Next, label the clipping to match the plant you took it from and place the label in the same little cube as the clipping, so there is no mistaking which plant it is. ● Once you have all your clones taken, put a dome on the chamber to prevent any pollen from escaping and to keep humidity regulated in the chamber.

The coolest part about this method is that you don’t need to actually root-out your clones to achieve the results — they simply start flowering regardless of roots, and you’ll have results on whether it is a female or male before you even have roots. This happens, most likely, within 7-10 days on average.

Keep in mind that the more robust a clone you take, with more node sites and foliage, the better you will be able to see any of the plant’s developing sex indicators.

This method is space and time-efficient. This way, you can get results faster than any other, and you won’t need to keep extra male plants around for longer than you needed because you can cull them out of your grow area faster than waiting until they are ready to flower.

As I said, seed projects can be incredibly fulfilling and a great opportunity to learn about the science of growing awesome plants.

What Is Microdosing?

Is It Helpful for Medical Marijuana Patients?

ne factor that people think about when it comes to cannabis consumption is how they are unable to function regularly after doing so. This does not have to be the case, as more recent and innovative methods of cannabis consumption allow us to get the medicinal benefits of cannabis without sacrificing any pace or productivity in our day-to-day lives. Consuming cannabis in small amounts throughout a period of time can be most helpful as it allows for a submaximal effect. Many people commonly refer to this submaximal effect (for cannabis and other substances) as “microdosing,” which can give people a way to cope with both physical and mental health issues, and just turn down the volume on their stress.

Microdosing, by definition, is the action or practice of taking or administering very small amounts of a drug to test or benefit from its physiological action while minimizing undesirable side effects.

It is a somewhat new idea with cannabis, as we learn more about the multitude of ways that the plant can help with such a variety of symptoms and conditions, with seemingly endless medicinal and wellness benefits. Many consumers who are seeking cannabis for wellness, not necessarily for healthcare needs such as terminal illnesses or chemotherapy, find that microdosing cannabis is helpful and not overbearing or hindering their focus, pace, or productivity.

In my experience, 10 mg of THC is usually the standard dose per serving in edibles, drinks, or tinctures. Generally, anything below that can be considered “low dose.”

It’s important to note that potency levels vary greatly between brands, and it’s always best to start small and work your way up to avoid surprises. Try consuming somewhere between 2 mg and 5 mg of the cannabis product and wait about two hours to feel the full effects. Then, you can stack your next dose, consume more, depending on how you feel and what you need for your medical marijuana conditions. Smoking or dabbing can be trickier to dose out. A Good Read — BREATH

1830, adventure artist and researcher George Catlin left his tedious job painting portraits of the Philadelphia aristocracy and set out to see America. What resulted was the most accurate and possibly only account of the Original People of these lands.

The first observation Catlin made as he started to draw the plains tribes was how perfect their teeth were. As he spent more time with them, he came to realize not only the perfection of their teeth, which he described “as perfectly lined up as piano keys,” but the tribal people were incredibly healthy, rarely suffering from any illnesses.

The tribes attributed their good health to what Catlin called the “great secret of life,” breathing. Breathing, however, was not a secret to the native peoples. Author James Nestor recounts Catlin’s research in his new book, BREATH. “Healthy breathing started at birth.

Mothers in all these tribes followed the same practices, carefully closing the baby’s lips with their fingers after each feeding. At night, they’d stand over sleeping infants and gently pinch mouths shut if they opened.”

What a lovely picture. For basically all my life, my mom, sister, and I traded books. If mom were still alive, she probably would have found James Nestor’s latest masterpiece, BREATH, before we did. Mom wanted to live forever, and anything she could do to make her body comply with that lofty goal, she did. She would have been the first one in

the family to tape her mouth shut at night to ensure no “dead toxic air” get into her lungs through her mouth, and her mission would be to make sure we did too.

I really had never given my sinuses a close look until now, but through James Nestor, I have traveled all the way back in my head, and it is not a pretty sight. My nares are pinched almost shut from atrophy caused by not using them. Goop was undoubtedly consolidating in my cilia. I learned my night thirst was from having my mouth open, letting the air dehydrate me through the salivary glands, not being dehydrated. During the winter, the dry air will suck all the moisture it can from us!

It turns out our mouths are truly meant for exhaling only. The tribal elders compared air breathed in through the nose to the lungs to pure water. They described air entering through our mouths as pond water. Gross!

They even laughed with their mouths closed.

Sniffing out all this new information about the nose and its inhabitants, and because as my kid says of me, “Everything has to be about marijuana with mom,” I started to wonder if smoking cannabis has any impact

on our sinuses. Let me tell you here and now, don’t do nose hits. Look at your pipe and understand having sinuses that look like that is a very bad thing.

It has been a long time since the anatomy class test on the sinuses, and I do not recall many opportunities since exams to give them much thought. God certainly did. He gave our sinuses a great deal of thought in the book of Genesis, 2:7, “...the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life....”

Let’s take a journey through those nostrils, and it may become apparent why you don’t want them to look like your cannabis pipe.

Nestor explains to us that in a single breath, more molecules will pass through our noses than “all the grains of sand on all the world’s beaches.”

These little bits of air come from a few feet or several yards away. As they make their way towards you they will twist and spool like the stars in a van Gogh sky, and they’ll keep twisting and spooling and scrolling as they pass into you, traveling at a clip of about five miles per hour.

What directs this rambling path are turbinates, six maze-like bones (three on each side) that begin at the opening of your nostrils and end just below the eyes. The turbinates are coiled in such a way that if you split them apart, they’d look like a seashell, which is how they got their other name, nasal concha, after the conch shell. Crustaceans use their elaborately designed shells to filter impurities and keep invaders out, so do we.

That is why masks are an effective way to keep germs out, as we all know from COVID. And why under those masks, we need to be breathing through our noses.

The Interior of the Nose “The interior of the nose, it turns out, is blanketed with the same flesh that covers the penis, clitoris and nipples,” Nestor explains. The health of this tissue has been discovered to directly mirror our overall health. Also, each nostril has its own breathing cycle. I found it particularly fascinating when I did one of his experiments regarding Right and Left sided breathing. We hold our finger over the right nostril and breath in through the left and out through the mouth 25 times for anxiety and panic attacks. By the tenth breath, I began to feel calmer. The technique is called Surya Bheda Pranayama.

Breathing through the right nostril is a gas pedal. When you are inhaling primarily through this channel you are activating the sympathetic nervous system, circulation speeds up, your body gets hotter and your cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate all increase... breathing through the right nostril will also feed more blood to the opposite hemisphere of the brain, specifically to the pre-frontal cortex, which has been associated with logical decision, language and computing.

Inhaling through the left nostril...works as a kind of break system for the right nostril’s accelerator. The left nostril is more connected to the parasympathetic nervous system and the rest and relax

side [of the brain] that lowers temperature and blood pressure, cools the body and reduces anxiety. Left nostril breathing shifts blood from to the opposite side of the pre-frontal cortex, that play a role in creative thought and emotions.

According to Nestor’s research, a plethora of diseases can be reversed simply by learning to breathe through our noses, including GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and sleep apnea, which is associated with 38,000 deaths a year. Nestor claims high blood pressure will come down, asthma will improve, fewer heart attacks will occur, impotence will be resolved, and COPD will drastically improve, which is responsible for 3.17 million deaths worldwide (5% of all deaths), just by closing our mouths when we sleep. There is also the benefit that when our mouths are shut, we spend more time listening to others, and that’s a good thing too, except when we are smoking! Then it’s mouths open – noses shut!

The last issue (January 2021) offered great information about the benefits of mushrooms.

I wondered if $12 worth of mushroom powder, combined with a few other nutritional supplements, was going to save my son’s life.

They did! Now I wonder if a box of bandaids to put over our mouths at night, which I now do, could save us from many more health challenges.

Some books change the way we look at the world, while some change how we interact with the world. Breath does both. Added to the science and really impressive research, Nestor is a delightful storyteller and wordsmith. He takes us back in time to the teaching of ancient peoples through the teachings of America’s native tribes and up to current times, bringing all to life and breath for us.

Update on the Larry Burgess arrest case

ne year ago this month, the February 2020 issue, I first brought you the case of Larry Burgess, who was arrested in May of 2017 by the small-town Fredonia, KS, sheriff’s office for growing one cannabis plant. This is the craziest story about a family that has been raked over the proverbial coals, all for trying to control seizures.

start with this horrific story, so I will try to be as chronological in the facts as possible. (You can also read the February 2020 issue article at www.TheEvolutionMag.com.)

I would love to tell you that Wilson County, KS, has seen the logic of letting Larry live in peace in Colorado, or that Wilson County had finally found compassion for a man who found some control for his Grand Mal Seizures with medical cannabis. However, in fact, Wilson County has gone full-tilt totalitarian in the last few months, and Burgess and his family are now suffering in even deeper ways.

Burgess has now been forced to leave Colorado and move back to Kansas. He is separated from his wife, children, newborn grandson and is instead staying with relatives. He had started a new Colorado job and was forced to leave it behind. This forced separation made the past Christmas holidays very difficult. In a recent Facebook post, Burgess said, “As I lay here alone thinking of my family in Colorado, I can’t help but be angry at my Kansas situation. The prosecutor, his team, all law enforcement officers involved get to be with their families over this Christmas holiday.

They are surrounded by laughter and love from their family members. Unwrapping gifts with the ones they love. How is this right?” I think we all agree that it is not right.

Burgess’ forced family separation is just the tip of a corrupt and stinky iceberg. It’s honestly hard for this writer to know where to 24

For years, since Judge Ahlquist initially modified his bond and allowed him to move to Colorado, Burgess had not been required to attend court in person. His court-appointed attorney, Jill Gillette, handled all his court appearances until he was subpoenaed back to Kansas for an October 22, 2020 court date.

A September court date was held on Zoom because the acting Wilson County Attorney, Larry Markle, had COVID-19. Burgess and his family were also exposed to COVID19 in Colorado. His doctor placed him and his family in a 14-day quarantine. Burgess provided his attorney with medical evidence, including test results and proof of the doctor’s

quarantine order, so that she could provide the documents to the court. Gillette did not print out the records but said she forwarded the email. During the September Zoom hearing, Deputy Chris Reed was testifying about the amount of cannabis oil found in the Burgess home in Fredonia at the time of his arrest. Acting County Attorney Markle said, “That was too much for one person?” Deputy Reed said, “Yes, he had to be selling it.”

Burgess replied, “Speculation!” His attorney said nothing. The judge then muted Burgess’ audio. Burgess told the judge that he could no longer hear the testimony. The judge said, “Too bad; you waived your right to hear by not being here in person.” The judge evidently did not feel like Markle waived the county’s rights by not attending in person.

For the October 22 hearing, Burgess traveled back to Kansas. During this hearing, Acting County Attorney Larry Markle reported that he had never received an email from Burgess’ attorney with Burgess’ COVID19 tests and quarantine order. He pulled up his email on his phone and said that he had only received a patient portal login window and no attachments. Gillette tried to pull it up on her pad but couldn’t find it. The judge said he never received the information. Burgess volunteered in court to supply those records, as he had brought copies with him. The judge said, “No, you have had 30 days to supply that evidence.” The judge then revoked his bond for not appearing in court! That’s odd!

The judge did approve the September Zoom hearing.

The judge then issued a gag order preventing Burgess from speaking with the press or Kansas Cannabis Advocates, claiming Burgess had contacted a Kansas City KCTV5 Continued on page 26 ►

Kansas Man Faces Decades in Prison for ONE Plant Update on the Larry Burgess arrest case Continued from page 24 reporter and then shared the story on social media. (Note: the KCTV5 report aired on February 12, 2020. See video link below.)

The judge said Burgess was trying to poison the jury pool in Wilson County by releasing details of his case, and he was portraying the sheriff’s office in a negative light by sharing the video of his arrest, as well as the jail video of Burgess seizing (the sheriff’s office did a superior job of that themselves. Watch the video). The judge then said they had received emails, phone calls, and faxes from the public, proving he was trying to taint the jury pool.

Facts: The KCTV5 reporter, Angie Riccono, contacted Larry Burgess. Riccono got the Burgess arrest videos for her story from the county — they are public record. One would think a judge would know that.

Meanwhile, the cycle of judges and County Attorneys have continued to evolve. The next court date of November 6 was set so the new judge would recuse himself because he knows the Burgess family. Additionally, the husband of Burgess’ court-appointed attorney became the new Wilson County Attorney this January, so another County attorney, Stephen Maxwell, was brought in from Reno County, KS. Maxwell worked under the notorious former Kansas Attorney General, Phil Kline, starting in 2003. Both Kline, Maxwell, and others faced ethics charges for their actions during this time. Phil Kline eventually lost his license to practice law in Kansas,1 and The United States Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal.2 Maxwell also faced battery and criminal restraint charges in Missouri.3 Maxwell is now the County attorney in charge of the Burgess case. Upon taking over the case, Maxwell increased Burgess’ charges by three and a half years after the initial charges. Burgess initially was charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor. Now, with Maxwell, Burgess faces 18 charges, with 17 felonies.

The original Fredonia sheriff in this case, Pete Figgins, who has been the focus of two classaction suits,4 did not win recent re-election and will be replaced by Jack Lucke, who was the lead detective on Burgess’ case.

At the time of this writing, December 28, 2020, was Burgess’ latest court date, at which time Judge Daryl D. Ahlquist was appointed to the Burgess case. He granted Burgess the original modified bond allowing him to go 26

to Colorado. Other courtroom action items were about who would be acting as County Attorney. It appears Maxwell will remain.

That will be confirmed at the next court date of January 7, 2021 (after this issue went to press). Does all this just blow your mind?

Those who support Larry Burgess and his large, extended family continue to work in support of him. We all pray that Judge Ahlquist will act in a more “just” manner than those who took the case after him.

ebruary is the perfect month to tell the second half of Grow Depot’s creation in Columbia, MO, and the resilient love that led to its birth through owners Olivia and Tyler.

Last month’s issue included a glimpse of Olivia’s challenging story about chasing her passion for cultivating cannabis. Part two of this story leads us to Tyler’s rocky road and, ultimately, transcending into a cultivating guru. Like Olivia’s past, Tyler’s didn’t come without difficult challenges, personal sacrifices, and run-ins with the law.

“I had ADHD as a kid, and my parents started me out on Adderall,” said Tyler. “As I grew older, I hated the side effects of using pharmaceuticals, so when I was 15-16, I began self-medicating with cannabis in place of traditional medication to get me through school.”

At a young 18, Tyler moved to a small mountain town in Colorado where a buddy hooked him up with cheap rent. He got his MMJ patient card and began growing the legal amount of 18 plants while also looking for a larger space to try his hand at outdoor growing.

Tyler was gaining a lot of legal cultivation experience while helping local patients in the process. However, it wasn’t long before the local county started having second thoughts about their new cannabis laws. They began legislation to lessen the plant count and had an already unhappy law enforcement about the new laws eager to enforce any newly given authority.

“I knew I had to move to a different county to continue,” Tyler reflected.

“I was tired of dealing with those grey areas. Even in Pueblo, the local police were always harassing me.

Countless times they would just sit outside my house waiting to do ‘knock n talks,’ which would lead to them wanting to inspect my grow to make sure it ‘was up to code.’ I finally had enough. I found a property for sale in Southern Colorado, bought it, and began growing Hemp.”

It wasn’t long before Tyler’s parents discovered his alternative medication — they kicked him out of the house. At a very young age, and with only $260 to his name and a pickup truck to live out of, he made the difficult decision to chase his With no running water, no drivecannabis passion. “Once summer hit, my dad and grandpa came up to help me and my brother build a one-room cabin. My family used to view cannabis as such a negative thing — I didn’t know if we would ever patch things up,” said Tyler. “After I moved to Colorado, started doing things legally, and started educating my family about all the benefits of cannabis, and after they saw it saving people’s lives — firsthand, they became a lot more open to it.”

The same love that reunited a family brought a new neighbor in this small Colorado town. Olivia arrived with her brothers, who recently bought a nearby plot of land to start growing from scratch — a similar project to what Tyler had just accomplished over the previous year. “She and I were both from Columbia, MO, and had never met until then,” said Tyler. “We both got thrown into the industry as teenager’s and wandered Colorado for 10-plus years, and somehow, ended up at the same place, at the same time, doing the same thing. It was a whirlwind of a year!”

Like a Valentine’s Day novel, over the next couple of growing seasons, the two spent almost every day and long nights for months on end protecting their properties (plants) from misguided thieves, weather, and the occasional wild animals. They watered their plants with guns on their hips — not only for thieves but also for the rattlesnakes that would wrap around the bottoms of their containers. Growing on a Budget

How to produce 1.5 pounds of medicine in a 3’ x 3’ space.

cannabis continues to gain cultural acceptance throughout the country, it’s becoming much easier for novice cultivators to find the resources they need to set up their first grow. Whether it’s through websites, social media, YouTube videos, a local grow shop, or even this magazine (check out the November 2019 and July 2020 issues for a couple of great articles on getting started), there’s no shortage of content readily available to help someone get up and running.

But with so many different growing methodologies, lighting styles, nutrient lines, etc., trying to determine the cost of producing your own medicine can become challenging.

It can also become frightening if you begin comparing your home production to that of larger-scale facilities or experienced growers who are precisely dialing in their gardens and trying to maximize plant yield at a commercial scale.

If you’re like most people, you don’t have an unlimited budget, and you’re not a commercial facility. You must put food on the table, pay your utilities, mortgage, rent — the list goes on. So, how much can you expect to produce on a budget? To answer that question, we need to start by identifying the basic equipment a first-time grower needs to give them a reasonable shot at success.

The Basic Gear

When I say basic, I truly mean BASIC. There are so many ways to grow cannabis, and I’m certain that many who are reading this article right now have strong opinions about their

preferred methodology. With that being said, we need to start somewhere to create a baseline for the cost of equipment. We also need to make a few assumptions, or this could end up being a 1,000-page book instead of a 1,000word article. Let’s assume you are growing in a climate-controlled space with temperatures maintained between 60F and 90F, humidity between 40% and 70%, and access to clean water. You are growing a photoperiod variety that goes through two weeks of propagation/ seed sprouting, four weeks of vegetative growth, and eight weeks of flowering (14 weeks from seed to harvest).

Grow Tent

To keep your plants separated from the environment around them and keep clean-up at a minimum, we recommend investing in a grow tent. This also makes it easy to mount lighting and fans and offers some protection from outside pests and pathogens.

You’ve now spent a total of $499.28 (before tax) to acquire the necessary equipment to grow four plants from seed to harvest.

Conservatively, the setup you just purchased could produce two ounces of dried flower per plant (eight ounces total) within 14 weeks.

What about electrical costs? During that time, you ran your light for 18 hours/day for 42 days and 12 hours/day for 56 days. You ran your oscillating fan for 24 hours/day for all 98 days. At $0.12/kWh (average residential electricity cost in Kansas City), electrical usage costs you approximately $57.05.

That puts the total cost of production for your first grow at $556.33. That’s $2.45 per gram, $69.54 per ounce, or $1,112.64 per pound.

Let’s then assume you repeat the exact same process two more times throughout the year, giving you three complete grows annually.

Each subsequent round producing eight ounces would only cost $43.90 in grow media, $15.95 in nutrients, and $57.05 in electricity for a total of $116.90. You’ve already paid the up-front cost for most of your equipment, so now you’re producing for $0.52 per gram, $14.61 per ounce, or $233.80 per pound.

Let’s go one more step. After just one year of growing, you’ve completed three full cycles and produced 1.5 pounds of bud for $790.13.

What Am I Missing?

To be honest, a ton of stuff, but not in a bad way. You can add inline fans and filters, grow hydroponically, build your own soil, run a perpetual harvest, start dialing in your nutri-

ent regimen — the possibilities are endless, and the learning never stops! You can spend a lot more money to increase your yield per dollar. You can also spend less money and increase your yield per dollar. I repeat — this is just a baseline — a starting point for the first-time grower who is on a budget and wants to know what they can produce with limited resources. The point is, for less than $500 of initial investment and less than $800 over a year, you can produce 1.5 pounds of medicine in a 3’ x 3’ space.

The Elephant in the (Grow) Room

You’re asking it. Even I’m asking it. Why would you ever purchase from a dispensary if you can grow your own for those prices?

Simply put, convenience and variety. Growing takes time, space, effort, and patience. I can grow my own peppers, but sometimes I want a different variety. Sometimes I lose a harvest. Sometimes I simply run out. When that happens, I go to the grocery store and buy peppers. Yeah, I kick myself for not having produced them on my own, but I still appreciate that they’re available and solve my immediate need. I look at dispensaries the same way. And for the individual who doesn’t have good knowledge about medical uses of cannabis and the time or space to grow on their own, dispensaries and caregivers are excellent options.

Grow on a Budget

This isn’t intended to be a testimonial to growing at home versus purchasing from a dispensary. Rather, I hope it can be a starting point for patients attempting to understand the economics behind growing their own medicine. Growing your own takes time, and one must love gardening to grow well.

From Grassroots Advocate to Dispensary Owner

I

met a very interesting person with a fantastic story while I was at the MoCannBizCon EXPO in 2019.

It was just a few months before we launched the first issue of The Evolution Magazine in June. His name, Chris Chelsey, who was volunteering at the Expo, has since gone on to become one of the few grassroots advocates to receive licenses in the Missouri MMJ Industry. He played a big role in collecting signatures to get Amendment 2 on the ballot while serving as the Deputy Director of the Greater St. Louis NORML.

A: In 2016, a lot of people were very opposed to it. I had a few people actually yell at me, and one lady told me that if she “knew which car was mine, she would slash my tires,” but most in opposition would just have generic responses like “It’s a gateway drug” or “Marijuana destroys lives.” We were told by the campaign not to engage people in conversation that weren’t going to sign the petition because we didn’t have time to waste.

We could talk with them after we were on the ballot.

Chelsey is a well-known Missouri Cannabis Advocate and a super guy to talk with, so we wanted to ask him a few questions about his volunteer life before Amendment 2 and his grassroots approach to opening two Missouri dispensaries. People like Chelsey ultimately helped make it possible for dispensaries and every business within the MMJ industry to open and serve patients’ needs.

Q: During this time of collecting signatures, were you already planning on applying for licensing?

As we enter an exciting year with more dispensaries opening each month, here’s a look back at how we got to this point with the help of great people and patient advocates like Chris Chelsey.

Q: How many hours did you spend volunteering for New Approach and NORML, and how many total signatures did you collect?

A: I volunteered well over 5,000 hours. It was basically a full-time job on top of my regular full-time job. I collected somewhere around six or seven thousand signatures while volunteering for the Amendment 2 campaign and notarized up to a few thousand petitions as well.

Q: What kind of opposition did you see in the early days of collecting signatures?

A: While collecting signatures outside of a polling place in 2017, an elderly election worker in her 80’s was being escorted by two St. Louis city police officers and started to walk by. I asked if she would like to sign while thinking that there was no way she would be interested or have the time. She stopped, asked me a little more about it, then said, “Absolutely!” As she filled it out with the two officers by her side, she began telling me about how almost ten years earlier, her husband passed away from cancer, and cannabis was the only thing that helped. She didn’t know where to get it, so she would go to late-night bars to find people smoking it and buy whatever she could. I almost cried thinking about what she was out doing late night and the dangers of it just to provide a little comfort for her husband. I’ll never forget that.

In 2017, Chris Chelsey volunteered over 5,000 hours collecting nearly 7,000 signatures for the Amendment 2 campaign. He spent days at fairs, roadside stands, anywhere he could to collect signatures. Ultimately in 2018 Amendment 2 was voted into law.

Q: What was your favorite positive experience while collecting signatures?

A: When I first started getting signatures, I had no plans to apply for licenses. I just really hoped that I would meet people that would hire me. As I met more potential license applicants that only talked about the money side of things, I started to think that I could do a better job of caring for and talking to patients.

But I was told early on by other cannabis activists that my chances were slim-to-none due to the amount of money it took just to get through the application process. Then one day, I was talking with an attorney friend of mine that I grew up with about another business idea I had. And as I was getting ready to leave, he asked me if I knew anything about the Medical Marijuana Campaign. I quickly opened my binder and showed him everything I was learning about cannabis. I guess he was impressed because the next thing he

said was, “Okay, let do this,” and everything else just kind of fell into place, so we started building the team.

Q: We spoke about how impressed I was with your hands-on approach to doing the construction and remodeling on your dispensaries yourself. Could you go into more detail about how your process experience was from winning your licenses up until now?

A: It’s been crazy, but one of the things I’m most proud of is my team.

We all have a lot of skills and like hands-on involvement in all phases of the project — none of us are afraid of getting a little dirty. We knew that would be essential for our grassroots approach if we won licenses.

We are doing as much as we can, where we can. That even included a few people on the team learning a new skill, just to help, like tiling the floor at our Festus location (I never want to do that again). We have also done all our own demo work, which was a huge project at our University location. It was a two-month process with many late nights ripping up multiple layers of tile on the flooring, ripping out old electric that wasn’t done properly, and even digging out a six-foot hole to replace the old, crumbling plumbing — just to name a few things.

Chelsey and the Star Buds Dispensaries team learned many new skill like tiling the floor at its Festus location (photo above), something Chelsey says, “I never want to do that again.” The Festus location plans to open sometime this month.

Q: Is there any thoughts that you would like to leave with our readers?

A: Just that I couldn’t have done this without my friends, family, my cannabis family, and my husband supporting me along the way. My team and I are really excited to be a part of this new Missouri industry.

We really are one of the few underdogs that won licenses, and we really are deeply patient-focused. I know when Missouri patients see some of the programs and discounts that we are offering people with conditions like cancer, they’ll know our focus is patients over profit.

I think it’s very important for patients to remember as they explore the potential benefits of medical cannabis. When looking for a dispensary to serve their needs, business owners like Chelsey have endured a long and expensive process to afford patients this opportunity. They have ultimately made it possible for you to visit a dispensary and are truly advocates to help patients.

Dispensary Shopping Asking questions makes for a smarter shopper...

ow into a new year, many patients are anxiously awaiting more of the 2021 dispensary grand opening announcements.

As of the end of 2020, close to 80,000 Missourians became legal medical cannabis patients with nearly 20,000 of those patients being licensed cultivators. As a physician, numbers like this are amazing to see; as is knowing that so many Missourians have been able to choose a holistic option for their chronic illnesses over many dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Many of the patients I see are overwhelmed and full of questions. Hopefully, I can help ease a patient’s mind and provide some information to prepare them for their first trip to a dispensary and the beginning of their medical cannabis journey. One of my biggest tips is encouraging all patients who have not done so to go ahead and get their state medical card, so they are ready when the dispensary near them opens.

One of the most common questions we receive is where to get medical cannabis products. Many more dispensaries are hoping to open within the coming months.

The DHSS provides a fantastic interactive map with facility locations on its website that allows patients to view the facilities that are approved to operate and offer patients legal access to medicine from state authorized providers. This map can also be viewed at www.TheEvolutionMag.com.

What should you look for when deciding to visit a dispensary? I encourage patients to seek out dispensaries that provide medical 36

consultations from trained nurses and doctors with experience and knowledge in cannabis.

It’s imperative that patients have access to reliable and knowledgeable staff when beginning their cannabis journeys because many patients do not understand the chance for relative contraindication (reason for caution) between their current pharmaceuticals and medical cannabis.

For example, patients taking blood pressure medications should closely monitor their blood pressure once beginning cannabis therapies because cannabis may naturally lower blood pressure. The patient may begin to see their blood pressure dropping too low, showing cause to speak with a physician about tapering down on their pharmaceutical blood pressure control.

Patients should absolutely be interested and asking about the available cannabinoids in their medical cannabis. Patients often focus on the amount of delta-9 THC (psychoactive cannabinoid) contained in medical cannabis products. While delta-9 THC is one contributing factor to the efficacy of cannabis therapies, other cannabinoids like THC-V, CBD, CBG, and CBN can bring about a myriad of additional benefits to patients. When patients

seek options for therapies, it’s important to understand the cannabinoid profile of the medicine available, so it’s imperative to ask the patient care staff (often called budtenders) about these profiles in the products they offer their patients. While most cannabinoids are not in themselves intoxicating, their presence may influence how THC affects you.

Another often overlooked detail that patients should be asking their patient care staff (budtender) is about the terpene profiles of the medicine available to them.

With continuous breeding of different genetics and the prevalence of Sativa/Indica hybrids, the terpenes of medicine have become a larger focus in recent years.

One of the greatest examples of a patient’s need to know terpene profiles is when it comes to the terpene called “Pinene.” When inhaled cannabis or sublingual oils are used, the terpene “pinene” should be avoided for PTSD patients as it can be anxiety-provoking.

This terpene has memory-enhancing effects that can make traumatic memories worse and should not be consumed by patients who have coped with or who are currently coping with PTSD or suicidal thoughts. Believe it or not, even the terpenes in foods you consume around the same time as consuming cannabis can impact your effects. Mango, which contains myrcene, can intensify the effects of your cannabis when consumed in conjunction with medicating with cannabis. I absolutely encourage patients to be aware of different consumption methods, even for dry cannabis flower.

The best option for patients will vary and may

be depend on their available environment for medicating, their current diagnosis, their cannabis, and any other outlying health issues. One method that we encourage patients to try is dry herb vaping. Dry herb vaporization provides many benefits to a patient; the primary benefit is the ability to control the temperature below combustion where a vapor is still produced that contains the active cannabinoids/terpenes without the harmful effects of inhaling combustion smoke. Vaporizing has been suggested to increase the amount of anti-inflammatory terpenes that protect the lungs from irritation and can also produce an extremely tasty vapor that has a truer flavor profile of the strain with which you are medicating.

Another method that we recommend to patients is infused products (savory and sweet foods, edibles, and drinks). These products can be greatly controlled in their dosages and can be easily microdosed throughout a patient’s day to achieve a continually medicated state without feeling overly medicated or “high.”

When it comes to edibles, they are processed through the body much differently than vaporization or combustion methods. When eating infused products, the cannabinoids reach the cells through the patient’s liver, which converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, that is far more potent and can have a much longer-lasting effect.

Overall, we encourage all patients to be informed and educated consumers. No questions are stupid questions when it comes to cannabis. We all have a lot to learn and a lot to overcome in the future. If you are not getting the answers to your questions at a particular dispensary, then be a smart patient and consumer and find a dispensary that will take time to properly help you.

love this month because it reminds me of Love.

I am so excited to share this story with you because, well, it’s about love, too. It all started when my husband’s cousin posted a cheesecake picture with four different types in one.

He showed it to me, and I said, of course, I can make that. Show me that picture. I love re-creating things in pictures for folks. It gives me an excuse to show my stuff. Show me a picture of a beautiful cake; I’ll make it. So, this four-type cheesecake was one with strawberry, Oreo, chocolate chip cookie, and then Hershey’s Cookies N Cream. Oh wow, just looking at the picture kind of makes one drool a little bit. It’s a pie sure to stop your Love in their tracks when they see it. Wow! If there’s one thing I know, it’s cheesecake. I used to make two every week at the restaurant for desserts. But, they ask, have you infused a cheesecake? Not yet, let’s do it! If you’re making one at home and choosing to use a no-bake cheesecake, that is totally fine. That makes this recipe super easy and super easy to infuse. You can either infuse the graham cracker crust with your cannabutter or use oil or tincture in the filling. Because you are not baking this pie, you do not have to worry about excessive heat except

from the microwave. If you are infusing the crust with cannabutter, you will need to melt the butter over a double boiler or slowly in a crockpot. If you are making a real cheesecake, watch your oven temp and do not bring it over 325 Fahrenheit. The no-bake version is so easy you can follow the instructions on the no-bake box, divide the prepared filling into four parts and then smash and mix in your ingredients.

For a baked cheesecake, follow the recipe below. Here you can infuse the recipe in the crust with cannabutter, or you can use a tincture or an infused oil in the filling again. I like to use my oil in the filling because my mixer has more of a chance to incorporate it fully. We are going to get 16 good sized slices out of this pie, so infuse accordingly! If you want to have a not so strong pie add 400 mg to it, and you will have 16, 25 mg slices. The toppings, however, may be added to the filling before baking, yet you will need to make a divider to divide the four parts. Or you can add them to the top of the pie once it has been baked.

Sometimes when I make a cheesecake, I like to make a chocolate ganache to put over the gram cracker crust before adding the filling to the pan. It’s so good and creates a chocolate layer over the crust.

Method

1. Heat oven to 325°F. In a small bowl, mix crust ingredients; press in bottom of an ungreased 10-inch springform pan. Bake 10 minutes. Cool three to five minutes.

2. In a large bowl, beat both kinds of cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and lemon juice with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and well blended. On low speed, add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until blended. Add the flour last and beat until smooth.

3. Pour filling over crust. Bake 55 minutes. Cool on cooling rack 10 minutes 4. Run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the cheesecake.

Cool completely on a cooling rack, about two hours. Cover; refrigerate at least three hours or overnight.

For GI Tract and Digestive Ailments

Cannabis does in many cases provide considerable GI tract relief.

roper digestion and elimination play vital roles in our overall health. Many millions of Americans suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders, including but not limited to: ● Chronic constipation: 63 million ● Diverticulitis: 50% of ages 60-80 ● Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: 20% ● Peptic Ulcer and Gastritis: 15 million ● Irritable Bowel Syndrome: 15 million ● Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Crone’s Disease: 1.5 million ● Colorectal cancers: 150,000 new cases per year ● Gluten sensitivity: 5% ● Celiac Disease: 1% These and other GI tract ailments are becoming even more widespread. Medical cannabis is providing considerable relief.

The first thing many people associate with weed is “the munchies.” A trait cannabis has been known to exhibit going back to at least 5000 B.C. when used in India to stimulate appetite and counter weight loss. Contemporary Ayurvedic medicine calls for cannabis in treating a variety of digestive disorders, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s Disease. Before cannabis prohibition, it was one of the most common physician-prescribed medicines in North America and Europe in treating diarrhea and stomach pains.

The body’s endocannabinoid system interacts with and regulates virtually every function of digestion, including stimulating and regulating appetite, converting food to energy, and waste elimination. Endocannabinoid production levels increase in the brain between meals, eventually triggering the urge to eat.

As we eat, those levels taper off.

An Israeli study demonstrated that over 50% of Crohn’s patients treated with cannabis experienced remission of their symptoms.

The “enteric nervous system” is comprised of 100 million neurons located along the digestive tract. CB1 and CB2 receptors are abundant on these enteric neurons.

Endocannabinoids and their receptors play vital roles in the way the body acquires and uses energy through the GI tract. The profusion of these CB1 and CB2 receptors is why cannabis is often effective in treating many GI tract

disorders, from cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, and gut pain to inflammatory conditions.

Cannabinoids help regulate GI tract motility, lipid metabolism, and gut secretions.

GI tract inflammation can occur due to any number of underlying causes, including a depressed immune system, food allergies, poor gut motility, or an unhealthy diet. An Israeli study demonstrated that over 50% of Crohn’s patients treated with cannabis experienced remission of their symptoms.

Studies have shown that cannabis may prove an effective treatment for colorectal cancer. The THC molecule, in particular, stimulates apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. When consumed in high doses over a 90-day period, either orally or taken rectally, as a concentrated oil (RSO/FECO), cannabis has been shown to reverse tumor growth and kill cancer cells.

Cannabis does, in many cases, provide considerable GI tract relief. And while relief is a wonderful thing, it’s important to bear in mind that cannabis isn’t always an actual cure. There are always underlying causes for GI tract disorders. Accurately identifying the underlying cause can lead to the cure. Sadly, American medicine hasn’t always proven itself particularly good at that, and GI tract disorders are a prime example.

Many billions are spent every year on GI tract

meds, both prescription and over the counter. Most only mask the symptoms, often with unpleasant side effects. Many even too quickly turn to invasive surgeries.

GI tract disorders often originate from the overuse of antibiotics.

Americans turn to antibiotics far more often than the rest of the world, and far more often than they’re actually required. Antibiotics do, in some cases, save lives, but they aren’t harmless. They destroy not only bad bacteria but good bacteria too. That includes the microbiome (“friendly bacteria”) in our digestive tract that’s required to digest and convert food into energy. When our food isn’t properly digested, it putrefies and becomes toxic. This is the cause of many food allergies.

A lack of microbiome also leaves the body vulnerable to bad bacteria.

Microbiome can be maintained by the daily consumption of foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt. But rebuilding microbiome destroyed by antibiotics requires supplementing with probiotics purchased from your local health food store.

We can learn much from looking at other cultures where GI tract disorders are far less prevalent. One such example is India. Most Indian doctors practice what is known as Ayurvedic medicine. Rather than prescription pharmaceuticals, they use herbs (and yes, that may include cannabis). The most commonly prescribed Ayurvedic medication is Triphala, a bitter herb blend derived from three flowers. Triphala regulates digestion and improves motility, reduces inflammation, and possesses significant healing properties. Triphala has been shown to cure a number of GI tract ailments (I was cured of a severe case of diverticulitis).

Don’t overlook the possibility that parasites may cause your GI tract disorder(s). For many years, parasite infestation was wrongly thought to be exclusively a third-world problem.

Then CDC acknowledged that up to 80% of all Americans are infested with intestinal parasites. Parasites can wreak havoc on our health. They cause gut inflammation. The toxins they release compromise the immune system, potentially resulting in neurological diseases such as MS. The safest, most effective way of getting rid of parasites is a teaspoon of diatomaceous earth (DE) (food grade only) stirred into a glass of water. Consume DE once a day for at least 45 days.

Though not always the cure, cannabis has proven remarkably effective in treating any number of GI tract ailments. Look for strains that are balanced between THC and CBD, as both are important for GI tract ailments. Edibles may prove a more targeted means of delivery, but smoking and vaping can still provide considerable relief.

Insomnia Symptoms Treated

with Medical Cannabis Best Cannabis Strains for Insomnia.

s many of you know, insomnia is a very common sleep disorder affecting up to 30% of the general population but is elevated to as high as 50-60% in older people.

It is very difficult for many people to fall asleep and remain asleep due to their inability to disconnect from their daily activities of living.

This is often exacerbated by fatigue, difficulties involving concentration and memory, alterations in mood, and, especially, social dysfunction. We’ll discuss insomnia symptoms and the effective use of medical cannabis for insomnia, including the best cannabis strains for insomnia treatment.

Sleeping difficulty: Medical marijuana restores an individual’s natural sleep cycle, and when struggling with insomnia, your sleep cycle can definitely fall out of sync.

Daytime sleepiness: Most people who think about medical weed imagine it causing sleepiness, relaxation, and giddiness. However, not all strains make you feel tired. Sativa strains actually do the opposite.

They’re energizing and uplifting and help you treat daytime sleepiness caused by insomnia.

Lack of concentration: Cannabis can help with concentration and focus, which are lacking when you are tired from not getting adequate sleep.

Headache: Headaches can interfere with work, performing daily tasks, and insomnia. Studies show medical cannabis can help with headaches.

Anxiety or depression: Cannabis has also been shown to improve anxiety and depression, which can be a side effect of struggling with insomnia and not getting adequate sleep.

Ways to use Medical Cannabis for Insomnia One way you can experiment with cannabis and insomnia is by changing how you ingest the substance.

Smoking and vaping both cause the effects to kick in right away. This can be beneficial if you are experiencing severe pain that is contributing to your insomnia. Immediate pain relief makes you feel better overall, so you can focus on sleep.

However, the effects of smoking and vaping wear off faster. That shorter period of relief may mean you wake up in the middle of the night when the effects stop. Smoking may also cause breathing issues due to higher levels of byproducts created by combustion.

Another option is consuming edibles, which are products infused with cannabis. You will have to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours for the cannabinoids to take effect fully, so plan ahead — edibles won’t make you fall asleep immediately. The benefit of this option is that the effects last much longer than they do with smoking or vaping.

Best Strains of Cannabis for Insomnia Choosing the right cannabis strain is an important part of the treatment process.

Sativa-dominant strains tend to have an energizing and uplifting effect, which is not helpful when you want to fall asleep. Not everyone experiences the “upper” feeling, but it’s generally best to avoid Sativa strains when sleep is your goal.

Indica-dominant strains are typically the best choice for treating insomnia. Indica strains usually induce a sleepy feeling that helps you drift off and stay asleep. The cannabinoid called CBN tends to have a sedating effect, so choosing a strain high in CBN may be a good choice. Aged cannabis tends to have higher CBN levels because another cannabinoid, THC, breaks down into CBN as it ages, making it a better option for getting good sleep.

THC also appears to be effective in treating insomnia. It may help you fall asleep faster with less difficulty, and it may reduce the number of times you wake up in the middle of the night. However, THC can worsen anxiety symptoms when used in high doses (use cautiously if suffering from anxiety). If your insomnia stems from anxiety or you feel anxiety as a result of your sleep issues, opt for a strain that’s low in THC. Also, consider “Micro” dosages to start and gradually increase (or decrease) as needed.

Finding your ideal cannabis strain to treat insomnia sometimes takes a little experimenting. Your body may react differently to a particular cannabis strain than someone else’s. If you don’t find success with your first strain, experiment with other options and smaller doses.

Side Effects of Cannabis for Insomnia Cannabis can cause a significant improvement in your insomnia, but it’s important to fully understand potential side effects. The side effects are often mild when compared with traditional medications.

Once the cannabis exits your body, those side effects disappear, so they are not long-lasting. A good thing!

Some of the potential effects of using cannabis include: ● A “high” feeling often described as euphoria, which is often more prominent in strains that are high in THC. ● Increased hunger. ● Sleepiness, which is the desired effect when you are dealing with insomnia. ● Red eyes. ● Dry mouth.

In comparison, prescription sleeping pills are known to carry a high risk of dependency. With research into medical cannabis becoming more prevalent and legally viable by the day, insomnia patients will soon have even more reasons to avoid pharmacological remedies.

Indica vs. Sativa Beginners’ Guide What is the difference between Indica and Sativa?

iology, dosing, and consumption method of cannabis can be different for everyone. Your tolerance to cannabis, the amount you consume (dosage), and the consumption method will also determine how a strain affects you.

Consider the following questions when looking for the strain or product that’s best for you.

What Impacts the Effects of Indica and Sativa Strains?

Ask Yourself These Questions: How much experience do you have with cannabis? ● If your tolerance is low, consider a low-THC strain in low doses.

Are you susceptible to anxiety or other side effects of THC? ● If so, try a strain high in CBD. ● If you don’t know, start with low THC levels and go slow.

Do you want the effects to last a long time? ● If you do, consider edibles (start with low micro-doses). ● Conversely, if you seek a short-term experience, use inhalation methods or a tincture.

There are many other factors to consider when choosing a strain, but if you find that indica strains consistently deliver a positive experience, then, by all means, stick to what you know. Keep a journal of dosages, time of onset, and time-length of benefits.

Sativa Effects While not all Sativa strains will energize you, most consumers notice a tendency for Sativas to produce a “head-high,” uplifting, stimulating effect. They also often report Sativas helping mitigate stress or anxiety. It’s thought of as a “daytime” strain. Many patients experience an uplifting feeling, euphoria, energy, sharpened focus, boosted creativity, and motivation. Ask your local dispensary for the Sativa strains best suited for your needs.

Indica Effects Not all Indica strains will put you “on the couch;” nevertheless, many patients associate Indicas with full-body effects, for example, heavy limbs or a tingly face. They also report Indicas as helping aid in relaxation and curbing insomnia. Common effects include feeling relaxed, euphoric, happy, and sleepy.

Indicas are commonly used as “nighttime” strains for relaxing, unwinding, and getting more sleep. Ask your local dispensary for the Indica strains best suited for your needs.

What is Hybrid?

Today, there are more and more crossbreeding cannabis strains called “Hybrid” strains, which are bred from both Indica- and Sativadescended plants. The reality is that it’s rare to 50

find strains that have pure Indica or pure Sativa lineages. Most strains referred to as “Indica” or “Sativa” are, in fact, some form of Hybrids, with genetics inherited from both plant subspecies.

Hybrid Effects Since Hybrid strains derive genetics from Indicas and Sativas, its ensuing effects can also derive from both strains. Common effects include happy, euphoric, uplifting, energetic to relaxing — it all depends on which Hybrid you consume and what effects its “parent” strains are known to produce.

Exploring Hybrid’s — ask your budtender what kind of effects the strain will produce. Remember, if it has more Indica in its lineage, it might have more effects associated with those strains and likewise if derived from a Sativa plant.

How to shop for cannabis without saying “Indica” or “Sativa.”

What’s important to you as a new cannabis patient shopping is everything to do with potency, dose, cannabinoids, and terpenes chemical profiles. As a beginner, starting with cannabis and selecting to use it as an alternative medicine is a personal experience. Let the budtender know your needs and ask for their help. If they cannot help or answer your questions — go to another dispensary. There are also doctors and nurses versed in cannabis as alternative medicine who can help you. Patient Care providers can also help educate and guide you to the correct strain for your needs.

Ask questions, start low, and go slow. *Anyone using cannabis for medicinal purposes should only do so with the advice of a medical doctor. More research is needed to understand the exact benefits, effects, and side effects of cannabis used as alternative medicine.
