The 11/8 Countdown is Here!

T

he countdown to November 8 and Amendment 3 on the ballot for Missouri’s Adult-use Marijuana Legalization has arrived.

As I write this column in October, the outcome is unknown.

What is known is that by the time this issue hits the streets, voters will still have the opportunity to read several articles we’ve published over the last four issues and educate themselves about the details outlined within Amendment 3 before heading to the polls.

St. Louis attorney Denise McCracken wrote a series of three articles about the details found in the Amendment 3 initiative for our August, September, and October issues. If you missed reading those issues, please visit our website to review them. We are grateful to Ms. McCracken for taking time away from her busy law practice to help better inform our readers about the details within Amendment 3.

Our November issue is a tight timeline leading up to the November 8 vote. Nevertheless, attorney Dan Viets, the Missouri Coordinator for NORML (the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), has written an article that will inform readers about the Initiative and exactly What It “Will” and “Will Not” do.

Viets says, ​“There are a great many misleading and false statements about the Legal Missouri Initiative which are being circulated on the internet, and, unfortunately, sometimes by major mainstream media who uncritically report what internet trolls are saying.” His article, found on page 16, will help set the record straight and better inform our readers about Amendment 3.

In 2018 Missouri passed Amendment 2 to legalize medical marijuana, with almost 66% approval. According to https://flatlandkc. org, a recent poll by SurveyUSA says 62% of 1,782 registered voters in Missouri responded that adult-use marijuana should be legalized.

Among other respondents, 25% were against legalization, and 13% were not sure.

As mentioned in the last two issues, this magazine remains a neutral media source and is 100% geared toward — as it says on the cover — Health, Wellness, and Education. We are working hard to help “Change the Stigma” and offer exclusive content for MMJ card holders, help add legitimacy to potential medical uses, and focus on product education, industry-related news, and businesses. We will not include any political opinions but rather let the voter decide. With that said, nothing happens until you get out and vote!

Lastly, this month we celebrate Thanksgiving on November 24.

Originally a celebration in remembrance of the Plymouth colonists (Pilgrims) and the Wampanoag native Americans sharing a harvest feast that’s acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving and peace. Turkey has become synonymous with the holiday; however, it’s long been debated whether or not the Pilgrims actually offered it at the inaugural feast in 1621.

Today, for nearly every American household, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original significance. Instead it is a day to gather with family and friends, feast on turkey and all the dressings, watch parades, football, and hopefully give thanks for family and friends and a lifetime of blessings and prosperity.

As our magazine celebrates its third year, we are truly thankful for every reader, our advertising partners, writers, and staff — all of whom make this publication possible. Thank you all for being a part of this exciting journey to educate and inform the dedicated readers about Missouri’s legal, medical cannabis products and industry. Stay tuned as we have much more to offer in the years ahead.

Presidential Proclamation on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana The White House Briefing Room Presidential Actions October 06, 2022.

Nevertheless, we want to publish this history-making news that will change the lives of many thousands of America. Stay tuned for future issues that will cover more in-depth details written by a Missouri attorney. Meanwhile, here’s the two White House press releases.

A

cting pursuant to the grant of authority in Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution of the United States, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., do hereby grant a full, complete, and unconditional pardon to (1) all current United States citizens and lawful permanent residents who committed the offense of simple possession of marijuana in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, as currently codified at 21 U.S.C. 844 and as previously codified elsewhere in the United States Code, or in violation of D.C. Code 48–904.01(d)(1), on or before the date of this proclamation, regardless of whether they have been charged with or prosecuted for this offense on or before the date of this proclamation; and (2) all current United States citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been convicted of the offense of simple possession of marijuana in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, as currently codified at 21 U.S.C. 844 and as previously codified elsewhere in the United States Code, or in violation of D.C. Code 48–904.01(d)(1); which pardon shall restore to them full political, civil, and other rights.

My intent by this proclamation is to pardon only the offense of simple possession of marijuana in violation of Federal law or in violation of D.C. Code 48–904.01(d)(1), and not any other offenses related to marijuana or other controlled substances. No language herein shall be construed to pardon any person for any other offense, including possession of other controlled substances, whether committed prior, subsequent, or contemporaneous to the pardoned offense of simple possession of marijuana. This pardon does not apply to individuals who were non-citizens not lawfully present in the United States at the time of their offense.

Pursuant to this proclamation, the Attorney General, acting through the Pardon Attorney, shall administer and effectuate the issuance of certificates of pardon to eligible applicants who have been charged or convicted for the offense of simple possession of marijuana in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, as currently codified at 21 U.S.C. 844 and as previously codified elsewhere in the United States Code, or in violation of D.C. Code 48–904.01(d)(1). The Attorney General, acting through the Pardon Attorney, is directed to develop and announce application procedures for certificates of pardon and to begin accepting applications in accordance with such procedures as soon as reasonably practicable. The Attorney General, acting through the Pardon Attorney, shall review all properly submitted applications and shall issue certificates of pardon to eligible applicants in due course.

Statement from President Biden on Marijuana Reform Briefing Room Statements and Releases October 06, 2022

As I often said during my campaign for President, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit.

Criminal records for marijuana possession have also imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities.

And while white and Black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionate rates.

Today, I am announcing three steps that I am taking to end this failed approach.

First, I am announcing a pardon of all prior Federal offenses of simple possession of marijuana. I have directed the Attorney General to develop an administrative process for the issuance of certificates of pardon to eligible individuals. There are thousands of people who have prior Federal convictions for marijuana possession, who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result.

My action will help relieve the collateral consequences arising from these convictions.

Second, I am urging all Governors to do the same with regard to state offenses. Just as no one should be in a Federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either.

Third, I am asking the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General to initiate the administrative process to review expeditiously how marijuana is scheduled under federal law. Federal law currently classifies marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, the classification meant for the most dangerous substances. This is the same schedule as for heroin and LSD, and even higher than the classification of fentanyl and methamphetamine — the drugs that are driving our overdose epidemic.

Finally, even as federal and state regulation of marijuana changes, important limitations on trafficking, marketing, and under-age sales should stay in place.

Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.

Amendment 3

Exactly What It Will and Will Not Do!

issourians have the opportunity with Amendment 3 to legalize Missouri’s non-medical adult-use, cultivation and sales of marijuana on November 8.

Amendment 3 is on the ballot because hundreds of thousands of Missourians signed petitions circulated by the Legal Missouri 2022 campaign. The following is a breakdown of Exactly What Amendment 3 Will and Will Not Do. We hope this helps provide some education about the Amendment before you head to the voting booth.

; It will end the great majority of the more than 20,000 arrests and prosecutions in our state each year. ; It will expunge hundreds of thousands of marijuana arrests and convictions from Missourians’ records automatically, without any action by the defendants being required. ; It will be especially beneficial to Black Missourians, who are arrested at a rate of 2.6 times more than White Missourians, despite the fact that the two groups use marijuana at almost exactly the same rate. Marijuana prohibition exists because of racism. ; Amendment 3 will go a long way toward fixing the problems caused by marijuana prohibition. _ It is not the last word on marijuana law in Missouri. _ It is not perfect.

Everyone has his or her own idea of what the perfect marijuana law would be. If we allow “perfect” to be the “enemy of the good,” we will never see legalization in this state. Amendment 3 will be on the ballot only because an alliance of activists such as NORML and other reform organizations worked closely with the medical marijuana industry to gather the signatures needed. Several million dollars are required to 16

pay petitioners to put an initiative like Amendment 3 on the ballot. If Amendment 3 fails, it is not likely there is anyone else who is going to donate that money to put another initiative on the ballot.

Some folks seem to think that the Missouri General Assembly will legalize marijuana for us. I have personally been going to the Missouri General Assembly for nearly 50 years, asking them to do exactly that. I have testified hundreds of times at legislative hearings.

There is almost no chance that the Missouri legislature will legalize marijuana for us. The legislative process is such that any controversial bill will very likely be amended extensively. It is very difficult to get legislation through the Missouri General Assembly.

There is no realistic chance that any legalization bill will pass the Missouri legislature in the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, the legislature does routinely place proposed Constitutional amendments on the ballot. If there are serious problems with Amendment 3, the Missouri legislature can certainly propose amendments to it by placing them before the voters at the next election. In fact, the Missouri legislature placed three proposed Constitutional amendments on this November’s ballot. It will be far easier to persuade the legislature to propose amendments to Amendment 3 after it passes than it would be to get the legislature to legalize on its own.

Amendment 3 contains many provisions that will benefit cannabis consumers. Many of those provisions are there because of the help NORML and its Chapter leaders from around the state of Missouri who played a major role in writing of Amendment 3.

In addition, to legalizing responsible adult use of marijuana,

Amendment 3: ; Will ban the use of “No Knock” search warrants in marijuana investigations. ; It will allow every adult in the state of Missouri to cultivate up to 18 marijuana plants. ; It will allow anyone to give (may gift, not sell) up to three (3) ounces to another adult. ; It will also improve the medical marijuana laws that Missourians passed in 2018. ; It will provide job discrimination protection for medical marijuana patients, who will no longer be denied a job or face the threat of termination because of medical marijuana use. ; It will also extend medical marijuana cards from only one year to three years, eliminating the need for an annual visit to the doctor and going through the bureaucracy of renewing a medical marijuana card each year. ; It will also double the number of patients for whom one may be a caregiver, one who provides cannabis and can be paid for his or her work and overhead. ; It will provide family court protections to all Missourians, ensuring that those who use marijuana responsibly will not suffer discrimination in child custody and child support disputes in our state’s courts. ; It will also mandate the issuing of at least 144 new marijuana business licenses. These licenses will be issued to people who have low income, who have been arrested or had a close family member arrested for marijuana, who live in areas where marijuana prohibition has been especially destructive and/or who live in unaccredited school districts. ; There is no cap on the number of medical marijuana business licenses the state may issue under our existing medical marijuana law. ; It will not place caps on the number of non-medical marijuana business licenses the state may issue. The Governor, the legislature, or the Department of Health and Senior Services can issue additional licenses at any time. The Missouri House has voted to do so, three times already.

Hunger and Sustainability Solutions with

Energy Curve Technologies

igh food prices have triggered a global crisis driving millions into extreme poverty, magnifying hunger and malnutrition. The number of people who are experiencing acute food insecurity and will need urgent assistance is likely to climb to 222 million people in 53 countries and territories, according to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).1 Domestic food price inflation remains high around the world. World Bank information between May to August 2022 shows high inflation in almost all low-income and middle-income countries; 88.2% of low-income countries, 91.1% of lower-middle-income countries, and 93% of upper-middle-income countries have seen inflation levels above 5%, with many experiencing double-digit inflation. The share of high-income countries with high inflation has also increased sharply, with about 82.1% experiencing high food price inflation.2 Our world is heading very quickly into a global hunger crisis. We are lucky to have pioneering agricultural scientists like those with Energy Curve Technologies (ECT) who saw the writing on the wall decades ago and have been researching and developing new farming practices and technologies to bring sustainability to farming and “Curve” the food crisis.

Ben Elliot, Chief Science Officer for ECT, was asked to lead a study to verify the claims of the top 100 microbial nutrient lines on the current market. Only four of those entities actually contained all the microbials their ingredients label claimed to have. Microbials are living organisms added to the soil; those living organisms die over time before they make it to consumers. ECT has fixed this issue with its nutrients.

ETC has also evolved the application process of these newly improved nutrients. Instead of the “one and done” approach that most farmers are used to, ECT’s is a three-phase process that addresses each separate phase of the plant growth — Early Growth, Veg State, and Production State. Each application has a different balance between NPK (Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus) that is specific to the particular phase of the plant’s growth. As the sun started to shine, so did the magic for the September 24 – 25 weekend festival. Behind a horizon of 60 acres with rolling hills and flatland, this weekend retreat included camping, workshops, sound baths, live performances, and local merchants. Guests and medical cannabis patients connected with Kansas City’s yoga teachers, healers, makers, and shakers for a weekend of Health of the Mind, Body, Soul.

The lake provided a beautiful backdrop for camping, reflection, and campfires. Vendors lined the beautiful property showcasing their creativity, wears, and talents. Food and coffee trucks kept the festival goers filled with delicious fuel for the body. The bliss and the energy exchanged will certainly last a lifetime.

The time will come again next year when we’ll meet under the same moon and stars and create more lasting memories. Plan now to attend for a weekend of Health of the Mind, Body, Soul. Until then, I leave you with this.

What Is The Difference Between

Home Growing Cannabis Indoors Versus Outdoors?

ast month’s column covered the basics of the cannabis plant’s life cycle, which is important to know if you are embarking on your own cannabis garden or if you are a caregiver for a patient who is managing a cannabis garden. However, there is much more to learn about growing cannabis, both indoors and outdoors. (You can find part one of this article in the October 2022 issue at www.TheEvolutionMagazine.com.) Let’s take a closer look at the difference.

The indoor versus outdoor debate has been argued among growers and cannabis enthusiasts for quite some time. Some say the desired end product should drive your decision to grow indoors or outdoors. But both methods can produce satisfying results when grown properly. When choosing to grow cannabis indoors or outdoors, there are several factors to consider.

1. Climate

Climate is the first factor to consider because you won’t be able to strategically plan your crop until you know where you’ll be growing.

For example, cannabis loves sunshine and needs a summer season to reach its full potential outdoors. That means if you live somewhere with limited sunshine through the canopy, growing outdoors might not be your best option.

Likewise, if you plan to grow in an area that receives full sun all day long in a dry climate, you had better be prepared to water your plants heavily. Many deserts and high desert climates will require daily watering to keep your plants happy.

Other climate considerations include too much moisture. If you live in an area that receives substantial rainfall during the summer months, you will want to opt for a greenhouse over fully sun-grown plants. Too

much moisture and humidity can lead to bud rot, mold, and mildew. Ultimately, if you do not live somewhere where it is possible to grow cannabis outdoors, you’ll be better off with an indoor grow.

2. Space

In Missouri, registered medical marijuana patients are allowed to grow six plants, which is fairly typical across the country. In adult-use legalized states, each household can usually grow between four to six plants, even if they don’t have a medical card. Regardless, space is a factor to consider, as you’ll need adequate space for the number of plants you intend to grow. Outdoor plants will be much larger than indoor plants because you have less control over their height and width when they are outside. However, indoor plants will also take up a lot of space.

To avoid overcrowding an indoor grow setup, plan for enough space for the fully mature plants to grow — plan for three square feet per plant to ensure that the branches of neighboring plants do not touch each other. A crowded grow room is susceptible to problems like mold due to limited airflow and the transfer of pests or diseases.

If given an optimal environment, outdoor crops need more growing space and should be spaced four to six feet apart. You need to be able to get around each plant with ease since you’ll be working in the plant to stake up big branches, remove dead leaves, and build a trellis as they get close to maturity.

Keep in mind that each strain of cannabis grows differently. Do a little strain research before choosing to grow indoor versus outdoor growing. Don’t forget to account for additional space to dry and cure your harvested plants.

3. Price

Growing cannabis is an investment, and it comes with a bit of trial and error that can add up financially. If you are using price to determine your growing preference, it’s probably not surprising to hear that growing indoors is usually a bigger initial investment. In addition, when starting from scratch, an indoor grow requires a lot of specialized equipment.

The room itself needs to be sterilized and often modified to include proper ventilation and adequate electrical wiring. You’ll need high-quality grow lights, ballasts, charcoal filters, fans, timers, humidity and temperature controls, and plenty of extension cords. Not to mention all of the pots, soil, nutrients, and other growing materials you’ll need wherever you grow.

To grow full-sun outdoor plants, you really only need the pots, soil, nutrients, and supplies to keep the plants upright, including trellis materials and bamboo stakes. Growing weed in a greenhouse does come with added expenses, which can vary quite a bit depending on the size of the greenhouse.

4. Potency

It’s a common misconception that indoor weed is more potent than outdoor weed. This is generally believed because indoor conditions are often gentler on the buds themselves. The terpenes and cannabinoids reside in the fragile trichomes of the cannabis flowers, and outdoor growing conditions are subject to a range of environmental factors like wind, rain, and even hail. Weather like this can damage the plant’s trichomes, producing less potent buds.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean indoor buds will always have a higher cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Whether growing indoors or outdoors, potency depends on plant genetics and overall plant care. New growers might find that potency increases year over year as they learn about cannabis cultivation.

5. Difficulty

Growing your first crop is challenging, any way you look at it.

But overall, growing cannabis indoors is usually more difficult at first because it requires much more attention to ensure optimum conditions are met at all times. For example, if you fail to moderate humidity levels, you may end up with a pest problem or an environment that begins to breed fungus or mold.

When growing outdoors, your plants are susceptible to some of the same issues as growing indoors, but you have less control because you can’t control the weather. However, growing outside is simpler because it requires less specialized equipment, and you rely on the most basic elements to grow anything: sunshine, soil, and water.

These elements are much more easily accessible outdoors.

However you go about it, happy growing!

Sports and Cannabis, The Evolution of the Game

f you’re a sports lover in this day and age, I believe it’s safe to say that the former marijuana stigma of the 60s is out the window.

Cannabis users are far from lazy, and its consumption helps in so many ways. Some of the world’s most talented athletes are admitted cannabis users. The evolution of the game is now.

We are all tired of seeing our favorite athletes benched and fined (or imprisoned) for simply using cannabis. This season, the NFL came in with a new collective bargaining agreement, which is an agreement between players and owners to loosen the rules around cannabis use among players. The NFL has taken a major step toward relaxing the penalties for cannabis use though they still penalize players for having over 150 nanograms of THC in their system. Which still sends the message that cannabis use is wrong. These high-level athletes go out and put their life on the line literally every day to perform for millions of fans every weekend. Their bodies are beaten up. Athletes should be able to choose the medicine of their choice for pain relief and recovery. Why is it ok for athletes to use harsh opioids like Vicodin, which are said to be highly addictive and have more proven side effects than cannabis? That is the question.

In a recent CBS sports article, Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre reported that he once took 15 Vicodin or about a month’s worth of painkillers in two days. Recently a study was done that said 52% of retired professional players used some form of painkillers during their time in the NFL. In the past, the NFL has done little to protect players from painkiller abuse — which has hurt many former athletes.

By agreeing to lessen fines and suspensions for THC use, the NFL is definitely taking steps in the right direction for its athletes. With that said, here’s a quick look at how some other major league sports handle cannabis use with their athletes.1 ● ● ●

NBA: Marijuana remains prohibited, but the relaxed testing protocol will bring the league more in line with its Big Four counterparts.

NHL: While the NHL tests for cannabis, there’s no punishment for positives. If a player has “abnormally high levels” of THC, it’s treated as a health matter (like alcoholism would be).

MLB: In 2019, MLB removed marijuana from its list of banned substances and now treats it the same as alcohol. Players do, however, remain subject to discipline for using or possessing the drug.

NFL: The new CBA reduced the testing window from four months to just two weeks of training camp so players could use marijuana in the offseason without fear of punishment. The threshold for a positive test was also raised, and suspensions were replaced by fines.

Now on to my favorite sport — Mixed Martial Arts. Though marijuana is banned in the UFC, it allows athletes to use CBD. If you don’t know already, CBD will not get you high. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant that does not cause intoxicating effects. Most CBD is derived from hemp plants grown to produce less than 0.3% THC, which makes it federally legal according to the 2018 Farm Bill. It has all the medicinal properties of the plant without the intoxicating psychosis.

From Ronda Rousey to the body snatcher Bas Rutten and many other athletes have confirmed their use of cannabis for recovery. As of 2021, the UFC no longer punishes fighters for using marijuana.

Former NBA star Al Harrington is building a $100 Million as the CEO of his Viola Brands cannabis company. According to its website, https://violabrands.com/, “The brand name “Viola” was inspired by his grandmother, who had long suffered from glaucoma. Harrington convinced her to try cannabis, from which she found relief, demonstrating to him the power of the plant. That experience inspired him to name his company after Viola.”

Now you can’t compete while under the influence. But the UFC understands that many of its athletes use marijuana and full-spectrum CBD to cope with pain and help with recovery. I think this is great and such a positive step toward restructuring the sports community as a whole. I have had personal friends and teammates who have had their prize purses taken for simply failing UA weed testing. Marijuana is not a PED (Performance Enhancing Drug) though it helps so many athletes recover. Think about it; take a second and imagine how one’s body feels after being literally locked around in a wire cage for 15-25 mins with another individual trying to tear your head off and break your limbs. Let that sit in on you for a minute. These athletes are modern day gladiators. Even a one-minute fight may require maximum recovery for both athletes — the average brawl/street fight lasts only 47 seconds. I can definitely say we are moving in the right direction in all sports regarding cannabis use, and I’ve seen a great deal of change in my lifetime. We can, will, and should always strive to do better. Education is key, and open minds can open new doors.

egardless of your experience level, you likely know that growing quality cannabis requires a handful of key nutrients.

These elements are the building blocks of healthy plants, whether present in nutrient-rich soil or added by dry or liquid amendments. You’re also probably familiar with the concept that too much or too little of any given nutrient can damage a plant. For the most part, though, commercially available soils and fertilizers remove the need to calculate the quantity of each element by including all-or-most nutrients in pre-determined ratios based on the plant’s requirements at each stage of growth (i.e., vegetative versus flowering). When they’re mixed into soil or water in proper proportions and adjusted to the appropriate pH level, feeding your plants becomes a breeze.

These are derived from two familiar chemical compounds, H20 (water) and CO2 (carbon dioxide). CO2, present in ambient air, makes its way into the plant through tiny pores on each leaf called stomata. H2O is absorbed as water through the roots.

Rather than blindly trusting the slick packaging and marketing lingo from an ever-expanding lineup of fertilizers, it can be extremely helpful to understand what type of alchemy is occurring inside the bottle or bag, especially when attempting to resolve problems in your garden. Sometimes the answer isn’t simply to add more or less pre-mixed fertilizer. Sometimes it’s to identify a particular nutrient that isn’t reaching its destination within the plant and correct it for that specific item.

Each nutrient can also be assigned a category based on its ability to move throughout the plant.

• Mobile nutrients can be transported from one location to another, depending on which portion of the plant needs them most.

• Immobile nutrients, with a few exceptions, remain in one location once they’ve been absorbed through the roots and cannot translocate within the plant.

When evaluating nutrient deficiencies in the leaves of your plant, this can be valuable knowledge. Plants deficient in mobile nutrients typically show discoloration and damage to lower, older leaves first. That’s because the deficient nutrients will be transported from

How to Grow BIG Plants the older areas of the plant to areas of new growth. Deficiencies in immobile nutrients are often seen in areas of newer growth because they are locked into the older portions of the plant where they were originally deposited.

Copper (Cu) ― Immobile —Yellowing and browning between leaf veins starting with upper leaves. New shoots wilt and darken.

Iron (Fe) ― Immobile —Yellowing between veins of young upper leaves starting from the base of the leaf and working its way towards the tips. Leaf edges curl upwards if left untreated.

Manganese (Mn) ― Immobile — Yellowing between leaf veins starting with upper leaves. Leaves will become pale and fall off if left untreated.

Molybdenum (Mo) ― Mobile – Yellowing between leaf veins starting with older leaves. Leaves begin to roll up or cup when left untreated.

There’s little evidence to support that deficiencies of these elements cause any harm to the plant. They are used in very small amounts and can be beneficial in assisting other essential nutrients in reaching their destinations.

More commonly, damage occurs when these nutrients are present in excessive quantities — for example, in overchlorinated water. ● Chlorine (Cl) ― Immobile ● Cobalt (Co) ― Immobile ● Selenium (Se) ― Immobile ● Silicon (Si) ― Immobile ● Sodium (Na) ― Mobile

A Word of Caution Unfortunately, arming ourselves with the knowledge of individual nutrients and their deficiencies has its potential pitfalls.

At the first sign a nutrient is lacking, our knee-jerk reaction is to immediately increase the amount of that nutrient in the next feeding.

The appropriate first step should be something quite different — check the pH of your soil and/or the solution of water and nutrients you’re feeding the plant.

Extremely high or low pH levels can prevent your plant from uptaking certain nutrients, EVEN if they are present in sufficient quantities. The ideal pH range for growing cannabis in soil is typically 6.0 to 7.0. In hydroponics, it’s 5.5 to 6.5. For a complete chart of optimal pH levels on a nutrient-by-nutrient basis, check out our July 2021 article in The EVOLUTION Magazine, “Water: The Power of pH.” Additionally, heavily unbalanced nutrients can cause a similar “lockout” effect whereby an overabundance of one or two nutrients causes a chemical reaction that may prevent another from reaching the plant.

Not until you’ve confirmed your pH is on target and you haven’t been overfeeding is it prudent to begin supplementing the nutrients responsible for a deficiency. And even then, proceed with caution, making incremental additions or adjustments.

rinding awake in the morning can be like cold starting an engine, and as I stagger into my dark kitchen, I’m reminded how many miles it already has. I grind up some coffee beans, fumble with the buttons on the brewer, and groan as I stretch out my joints. I’ve been relatively athletic most of my life, but shoulder injuries during my service and other small annoyances have built up over time, leading to a lot of popping and cracking. It’s made it a chore to keep fit, but at the same time, it has inspired a streak of running in me, and it’s a habit that has built into a daily part of my routine. After I down the cup of Joe (and do a good bit more stretching), I lace up my running shoes and get ready to get the blood moving.

From there, I thought my habits for my morning were a touch weird. You see, while I drink my coffee, I usually consume a choice amount of cannabis, the green gift we all love. It’s a fantastic pairing with coffee and an early morning, but I’ve learned lately that it also is an otherworldly experience when paired with a solid, hard run. Once you get into a good rhythm and pace, the THC melts away any aches or pains, enhances your focus, and just makes exercising fun as hell. It seems to almost fuel the exercise for me, and I’ve enjoyed toking up before a hard workout ever since.

I thought my green philosophy was unique until a conspicuously green book popped out to me at Barnes & Noble. The book was Runner’s High by Josiah Hess, and the cannabis leaves hidden in the text hinted that this might be my kind of book. I brought it up to the front desk, got an odd look from the cashier, and was off with my prize. The book picks up quickly, and Josiah Hess wastes no time in introducing the concept: Cannabis has been used by athletes for centuries, and modern scientific evidence supports this as legalization continues.

I was fairly blown away. One of the book’s first scenes is Hess’ interview with Avery Collins, a professional Ultramarathon runner 36

and arguably the first athlete to openly associate with cannabis. When breaching the subject about the plant, Avery states that “When I’m in training mode, everything is numbers: the vertical gain, the distance, my pace…But if I take an edible or hit my vape pen, all that glides away, and I’m like ‘Just go F-ing run.’” This philosophy resonated with me and my own experience with cannabis. Collins states a bit later that “It’s like a spiritual experience. Everything is perfect, everything is pure bliss. I’m in the moment, fully tapped into the trail, my body, and I’m loving every second of it.”

The book shoots off from there, and Hess speaks to evolutionary biologists, athletes, WADA (World Anti-Doping Association), and more, breaking through the veil that has been imposed on cannabis and athletics for so long. Names like Nick Diaz (UFC), Matt Barnes (NBA), and Sha’Carri Richardson (an Olympic 100m Runner handed a one-month suspension for cannabis in 2021) all lend their voices to the topic. For me, cannabis gives me the energy to get through my day and fuels my workouts. Learning that I’m part of a community with a lot more history than previously expected has opened my eyes and made me love the current cannabis movement even more.

So for patients looking for a good read, I highly recommend Runner’s High, especially for those who like to get toasted and get a good sweat on. Books like these and other publications showing the true positive sides of cannabis are what this movement needs, and every perspective is valuable in the march toward legalization.

The Missouri Hemp Program Has Dissolved Missouri hemp producers to operate under USDA Domestic Hemp production.

Editor Note: We asked Tyler Morgan, Board of directors and Chairman of the Missouri Hemp Trade Association, to explain what’s behind the recent dissolution of the Missouri Hemp program and what it means for the future of Missouri-grown hemp and its ancillary businesses.

He is what Morgan shares with our readers on this important topic.

issouri hemp producers will now operate under the USDA Domestic Hemp production program beginning January 1, 2023. The former Missouri Hemp program, as approved by the USDA, has been dissolved. By statute, the Missouri program had to be funded by fees generated by producer registrations, and there were not enough people participating to make that happen in a reasonable way.

The fees would need to be so high that the Missouri Hemp program would not have an affordably viable program. Current hemp farming/ producer registrations will expire on December 31, 2022.

in Missouri. It advocates and works to support the development of the entire hemp industry. Now it must take its initiatives to Washington DC and work with our federal representatives to advance our cause.

Hemp and hemp-derived products are the Legal Cannabis Industry.

As the industry grows, we must defend it from those that would exclude or limit growers from what is already legal. MoHempTrade must advocate for clear consumer protection and labeling laws.

It must protect the business owners, brands, farmers, distributors, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, customers, and everyone building the hemp industry across Missouri. This already affects the livelihood of thousands of Missouri businesses and millions of customers. Solutions must come from within our industry instead of being imposed by outside parties.

Beginning in late October, the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the USDA started a virtual and in-person outreach program to help with this transition as it moves into the 2023 growing season. These events are listed on the MDA Hemp program website.

Some positive changes will come with this transition. The hemp program has challenges that the Missouri Hemp Trade Association (MoHempTrade) must address as it builds the hemp industry across the state. A couple of immediate benefits are: 1. There will be no application fees for licensing as a producer with the USDA. Each noncontiguous parcel that is farmed will need a separate registration. This requirement was a financial burden at $750 per registration under the former Missouri program.

2. Producers will not be required to have a separate seed and propagule license. The right to produce seeds and propagules and sell them to other registered producers is automatically part of registration with the USDA. You will need a standard seed license under Missouri seed law, and those guidelines can be found at the MDA website.

There are challenges ahead as well. The Missouri Hemp Trade Association has a lot of work to do on behalf of its members and for the benefit of our state. Now that the former program has been statutorily dissolved, MoHempTrade remains the one voice for hemp 40

We must remove barriers to entry. We need exemptions from burdensome fees and irrelevant testing requirements to produce fiber, grain, food, and feed by farms and businesses across the state. Hemp needs a level playing field with other commodities to build a thriving industry.

We need strong and lasting partnerships with other associations and businesses as we face these challenges. Hemp will be part of every industry as an important keystone in our economy. However, that potential will not be realized unless we have reasonable regulations that protect our farms and producers by removing all criminal implications and threats of economic loss. It cannot be realized if the right to participate is only granted to a few.

We must work in our communities and with our state representatives to create fair and inclusive legislation that protects the right of all Missourians to enter and be part of this industry. We need regulation that opens doors and prevents exclusion. Our constitution is meant to protect the rights of all citizens and should not be used to limit or grant rights to specific individuals. We need to work at the state and federal levels as partners in the future of this amazing industry to accomplish the great task at hand. It is up to us to see this to its full potential, but we need to stand together and build it, create it, grow it, and protect it.

It is time for the hemp industry to thrive instead of survive.

With the recent changes in our state, the people who have spent the last four years working on launching industrial hemp in Missouri are united. We are gathering with one voice to combine our resources and efforts to build the association we need to represent everyone’s interests. It’s time to work with corn growers, soy growers, cattlemen, and industry leaders and bring the voice for hemp to the table. It is time for corporate leaders like Boeing, Purina, Chrysler, and many more that use hemp in their industries to join us. We need to support the development of a local and resilient supply chain. We need your support and participation as Missouri moves forward to create a dynamic and abundant hemp and cannabis economy.

Today hemp materials can and are used for everything from feed for livestock to apparel to building materials like concrete, wood flooring and many more uses.

From Illegal User to Legal Patient in 40 Years Plus, Buds on a Budget…

s this November issue of goes to press in mid-October, we do not yet know the results of the November 8 election. The fate of Amendment 3, the first initiative that gives Missourians the opportunity to legalize the adult use of marijuana, still hangs in the balance. As I write this, I am hopeful and optimistic. By the time you read this, you and I will either be elated or extremely disappointed. I have been waiting for this moment for over forty years and through nine presidential terms. When I smoked my first joint in 1976, Gerald Ford was in the White House. Now Joe Biden is president, it’s 2022, and for the majority of Missouri residents, not much has changed. That harmless little joint in your pocket currently remains illegal and can ruin your life if you get caught with it. The stakes of this election are very high.

For the last three years, I have been a legal (patient) user and licensed cultivator of medical marijuana. I try to be a good citizen who obeys the law and is an active participant in my community. For the 40 years before that, I was classified as a criminal and a social pariah who should be avoided at all costs. I was ineligible for most high-paying jobs and risked imprisonment for most of my adult life. The only thing that has changed is the law. I am still doing what I have always done, but now it is legal. The fact that I use and grow cannabis (for medical use) is now an interesting topic of conversation. Dinner companions, who would have shunned me as a worthless stigmatized pothead in the past, now find that asking me questions about my weed garden is fascinating. I am still adjusting to the culture shock. As we approach legalization, part of me is happy and saying it is about damn time.

Another part of me is somewhat bitter and melancholy. How different would my life have been if these archaic and unfair laws had been changed 40 years ago?

consequences for my behavior is through nothing but pure luck — I count my blessings every day. Many friends have not been as lucky.

My use of the “plant” has changed as much as the plant itself. The Mexican weed we consumed in the 1970s had an average THC content of around 2%. Today, it is not unusual to see 30% or more in the buds we have available. Four decades ago, we couldn’t have imagined these amazing concentrates, such as shatter, that have lab tested certifications of over 80%. What will you kids think of next? I can hardly wait!

Smoking marijuana should not be considered a recreational activity. It can certainly be used to improve other recreational activities — sports and leisure-type, but just sitting around and consuming simply for the sake of “getting high” is destructive at any age. That is why I’m glad that Amendment 3 calls for “adult-use” instead of “recreational” marijuana.

As a senior citizen, marijuana is helping me to stay alive and allowing me to be productive. Complications from a stomach disorder caused me to lose 50 pounds and left me in constant pain. Conventional medications, which did not address the cause of my issues, created more harm than good in side effects. They also did nothing to relieve my misery. Good old fashion weed, pot, cannabis, marijuana — whatever label you want to place on it is the only thing that did the trick.

Over the past few decades, I have had many jobs and vocations. I have worked in Ad sales, installed satellite dishes, and made pastries and desserts in a gourmet restaurant. For over a decade, I pursued a career in show business as an actor, comedian, and writer. I toured throughout the United States as a comic and had numerous small parts in movies, commercials, and television shows.

As the years passed, many things are now different. Hairstyles, clothing, and attitudes have changed. In my personal life, there have been many changes as well. New jobs. New relationships. New locations. I went to school in southwest Missouri and have lived here for the last 20 years; however, I have lived all over the United States — big cities, small towns, and secluded cabins in the woods. The one thing that has remained constant is my use of marijuana.

I will be the first to admit that my early years of use had nothing to do with medicine, and I could in no way be categorized as responsible.

I smoked at inappropriate times and places and took chances that now seem very foolish. The fact that I have no arrests or any legal 44

My medical complications left me unable to work and placed on disability. A limited income and the high price of marijuana led to the risky decision to starting a small indoor garden. Thankfully, I was able to get away with it until I became a legally licensed “medical patient” cultivator. It had been 20 years since I had grown plants, but my previous experience taught me a lot of tricks that allow me to have high-quality buds without spending the money that can go into many other people’s efforts.

I imagine some of you are also on limited incomes or think that growing marijuana and making your own edibles is too complicated. In future issues of this magazine, I hope to share some of the knowledge I have gained as a home cultivator and show some shortcuts to having your own dispensary quality cannabis products, while spending a small fraction of what you could. Consider it as buds on a budget. In the meantime, don’t forget to get out and vote.

A Crafted Hemp Experience at Jades Elevation

any things led up to the start date of Jades Elevation on April 20, 2018. There were a lot of crazy dreams that involved this “new crop.” I was laid off from my job. And I relocated back to home from Houston, TX. To explore the opportunities available to me, I took a leap of faith and followed my cannabis passion. After attending, New Farmers Academy at Tennessee State University, I was able to elevate my passion for agriculture and the plant.

Jades Elevation is an urban farm located in Memphis, TN. We focus on growing, processing, and manufacturing top-of-the-line-handcrafted hemp products. We process in small batches to ensure quality control — a third party tests all our items and flowers. After trial and error, we settled on solventless extraction and a zero-waste policy that allows us the perform research and development.

Many people wonder, who is Jade? Well, she is my 9-yearold daughter. She is the biggest supporter and mentee. Leftover Turkey with Polenta, Cherry Tomato Concasse, and Roasted Eggplant

t’s November, my friends. The air is crisp, colorful leaves are falling from the trees, and all I can think about is how we will cook our Thanksgiving turkey this year! Whether it’s a fried holiday bird, a smoked bird, or a beautifully roasted bird, I love them all! But I will not do a recipe about how to cook a turkey this year. I’m talking about what to do with the leftovers, which everyone always has! Of course, my go-to late-night snack after Thanksgiving is a turkey sandwich with mayo, but this recipe will be something that you could actually serve for dinner and get great reviews. I’m so excited for you to try it.

sure you skin it. Take a potato peeler and get all that purple skin off because it will turn to leather after it’s roasted, which is an unwanted texture for this dish.

Next, we will be making a cherry tomato concasse. Concasse is a French term that means “to crush.” I am a French-trained chef, so of course, I have to throw in a technique like this. But, not to fret, crushing tomatoes is actually a lot of fun! It would be more fun if we could put them in a bucket and crush them with our feet like Lucille Ball, but I guess we better save that for when we are making wine! With all of that said, let’s get down to business and cook some amazing food!

Ingredients: For the polenta 1 box of polenta from the store 2 tablespoons of cannabutter Himalayan salt and course ground pepper to taste For the Tomato Concasse 2 small boxes of cherry tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic minced 1 tablespoon of butter ½ of a small yellow onion or sweet onion diced ¼ cup of fresh basil or 1/8 cup of fresh basil microgreens chopped Himalayan salt and course ground pepper to taste

This recipe has a few different components, so I want to touch on a few things before we start. First, don’t be intimidated by any of this!

It is all super easy once you try it. We are going to make polenta, which is similar to grits. Polenta is just ground corn, so to give it some flavor, we will use 2 tablespoons of green butter, salt, and pepper. When you go to the store to get your polenta, it should be by the rice. It comes in a box with easy-to-follow instructions. Usually, you would do one cup of water or chicken stock to ½ cup of polenta, but my advice is to simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Second, don’t be afraid of the eggplant. When done correctly, eggplant is actually delicious. It is surprisingly “meaty” and flavorful.

I like to roast mine to get the best flavor, but this would also be perfect on the grill. The one tip I will give you about the eggplant is to make 48

For the Eggplant 2 medium sized eggplants 1 clove of garlic Olive oil, coconut oil, hemp seed oil or whatever you have on hand Himalayan salt and course ground pepper to taste The Method 1. Get that eggplant roasting!

This step will take the longest.

Set your oven to 400 degrees and let it preheat.

2. Skin the eggplant with a potato peeler until all the purple skin is gone.

3. Slice the eggplant in ½ inch slices longways so that you have long slabs of eggplant

Prep a baking sheet with a roasting rack, but if you don’t have one, just put some foil or parchment paper on your baking sheet to prevent sticking.

5. Place sliced eggplant on the pan or roasting rack and drizzle with your choice of oil and then salt and pepper.

6. When the oven is preheated, put the eggplant in for 30 minutes and roast.

7. Time for the concasse. On the stovetop, put a medium sauce pan on medium-high and add one tablespoon of butter. When the pan is hot and the butter has melted, turn the temperature down to medium, add the chopped onion and let it sweat.

8. When the onion is somewhat translucent, add the minced garlic and stir to cook for about 30 seconds.

9. Place the cherry tomatoes in the saucepan and let them stew.

10. After cherry tomatoes are warm and somewhat cooked, take a whisk and smash them so they open up and release all of their juices into the pan. Stir and turn the heat down to low, and cover.

Let it simmer for 20 minutes, and then stir in chopped basil.

11. Prepare polenta. The polenta only takes about 5 minutes so if your timer is almost done on the eggplant, get it going. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions,

12. Or bring 1 cup of water or chicken stock to a boil, add 2 tablespoons of cannabutter and then add ½ cup of polenta.

13. Turn the heat down to a simmer and let the polenta firm up while stirring. It will need to continue simmering for about 2 minutes before you take it off the heat.

14. Once the polenta is finished, sprinkle it with salt and pepper.

15. Plate it up! I do polenta on the bottom, then tomato concasse and eggplant, and top with room-temperature turkey leftovers.

Sprinkle some of your basil on the top, and you will have a beautiful, healthy dinner!

Ways to Use Medical Marijuana for Glaucoma Treatment Methods and Strains

ow do patients with glaucoma typically use cannabis? Here are some of the more common intake preferred methods.

Smoking is the method that offers the quickest relief from symptoms, which is very important for patients with glaucoma.

Vaporizing, also called vaping, is another inhalation method that brings you almost immediate relief. However, unlike smoking, it’s most likely to provoke irritation of the throat or lungs. Be sure to keep your vaping unit clean and always charged.

Edibles are available in a multitude of flavors and forms. They take a little time to kick in (approximately 30-45 minutes) but will provide a longer, more lasting effect. Many people like to take these as they can be used very discreetly. You can either make your own or purchase ready-made edibles.

Juices can be blended fresh, mixing raw cannabis leaves with some fruit juice. Take a drink of this concoction every four hours or so and it will help to minimize your symptoms.

Sprays come in a variety of pleasant flavors and allow the user discreet use of this product.

Tinctures can be placed directly into your food or drinks but are generally a little more expensive to purchase.

Maui Wowie is commonly used and is popular as it decreases eye pressure, pain, anxiety, and depression. You feel happy and uplifted when you use this strain.

Cherry Cola is a potent Indica strain that will treat eye pressure but consider using a lower concentration.

Super Bud is an Indica strain with many terpenes. It almost has a narcotic effect but can also boost your brain and, therefore, works as a neuroprotective and decreases pain and inflammation.

Jack Herrer is a Sativa-dominant brand and is full of natural painkillers that reduce tissue inflammation and stress.

Sour Grape is a hybrid strain that works on many levels. It can also improve nausea and pain as well as eye pressure.

Durban Poison is a sweet Sativa strain that provides an energetic and uplifting experience, which can make you feel quite upbeat and creative. After improving your nausea and/or vomiting symptoms, you can go about the rest of your day in a normal fashion.

Trinity relieves depression and stops you from feeling nauseated.

You may feel drowsy after having a creative and focused initial effect from this Sativa strain, but it does help with nausea and vomiting.

Sour Diesel is an energizing Sativa. It is a good replacement for morning coffee and makes you feel focused and positive.

Indica vs. Sativa Beginners’ Guide What is the difference between Indica and Sativa?

iology, dosing, and consumption method of cannabis can be different for everyone. Your tolerance to cannabis, the amount you consume (dosage), and the consumption method will also determine how a strain affects you.

Consider the following questions when looking for the strain or product that’s best for you.

What Impacts the Effects of Indica and Sativa Strains?

Ask Yourself These Questions: How much experience do you have with cannabis? ● If your tolerance is low, consider a low-THC strain in low doses.

Are you susceptible to anxiety or other side effects of THC? ● If so, try a strain high in CBD. ● If you don’t know, start with low THC levels and go slow.

Do you want the effects to last a long time? ● If you do, consider edibles (start with low micro-doses). ● Conversely, if you seek a short-term experience, use inhalation methods or a tincture.

There are many other factors to consider when choosing a strain, but if you find that indica strains consistently deliver a positive experience, then, by all means, stick to what you know. Keep a journal of dosages, time of onset, and time-length of benefits.

Sativa Effects While not all Sativa strains will energize you, most consumers notice a tendency for Sativas to produce a “head-high,” uplifting, stimulating effect. They also often report Sativas helping mitigate stress or anxiety. It’s thought of as a “daytime” strain. Many patients experience an uplifting feeling, euphoria, energy, sharpened focus, boosted creativity, and motivation. Ask your local dispensary for the Sativa strains best suited for your needs.

Indica Effects Not all Indica strains can put you “on the couch;” nevertheless, many patients associate Indicas with full-body effects, for example, heavy limbs or a tingly face. They also report Indicas as helping aid in relaxation and curbing insomnia. Common effects include feeling relaxed, euphoric, happy, and sleepy.

Indicas are commonly used as “nighttime” strains for relaxing, unwinding, and getting more sleep. Ask your local dispensary for the Indica strains best suited for your needs.

What is Hybrid?

Today, there are more and more crossbreeding cannabis strains called “Hybrid” strains, which are bred from both Indica- and Sativadescended plants. The reality is that it’s rare to 52

find strains that have pure Indica or pure Sativa lineages. Most strains referred to as “Indica” or “Sativa” are, in fact, some form of Hybrids, with genetics inherited from both plant subspecies.

Hybrid Effects Since Hybrid strains derive genetics from Indicas and Sativas, its ensuing effects can also derive from both strains. Common effects include happy, euphoric, uplifting, energetic to relaxing — it all depends on which Hybrid you consume and what effects its “parent” strains are known to produce.

Exploring Hybrid’s — ask your budtender what kind of effects the strain will produce. Remember, if it has more Indica in its lineage, it might have more effects associated with those strains and likewise if derived from a Sativa plant.

How to shop for cannabis without saying “Indica” or “Sativa.”

What’s important to you as a new cannabis patient shopping is everything to do with potency, dose, cannabinoids, and terpenes chemical profiles. As a beginner, starting with cannabis and selecting to use it as an alternative medicine is a personal experience. Let the budtender know your needs and ask for their help. If they cannot help or answer your questions — go to another dispensary. There are also doctors and nurses versed in cannabis as alternative medicine who can help you. Patient Care providers can also help educate and guide you to the correct strain for your needs.

Ask your budtender questions, start low, and go slow. *Anyone using cannabis for medicinal purposes should only do so with the advice of a medical doctor. More research is needed to understand the exact benefits, effects, and side effects of cannabis used as alternative medicine.

Could Hemp Revolutionize the Livestock Industry?

We are what we eat, could hemp-fed make us healthier?

Things are looking a little grim in the American food chain of late.

Shortages of grains persist, not just with the world food bank due to the destruction of the wheat basket in Ukraine from an unprovoked war, but from climate changes resulting in the loss of our breadbasket. Recall that Nebraska “hurricane” a few years ago? Aside from taking out most of the bridges and infrastructure in the state, the water stripped the topsoil of Nebraska farmland down to sandy loam that could be seen from space. From drought to wildfires, massive flooding, and wind events, business as usual will not continue to feed us or solve this year’s turkey shortage. I don’t think any of us were really aware of how globally versus locally entwined our food chain has become until recent world events. We have definitely created many unsustainable links in that chain.

The caped heroes of our Nation’s food crisis are our Midwest farmers and their rapid embracing of the birthing hemp crop to the rescue.

This thriving, committed, and absolutely unstoppable group of literally grassroots women and men farmers of all ages is here to create a new food chain, a new farm, a new crop, and a new infrastructure to support the birthing hemp industry. After fifty years of stagnation,

hemp is happening at lightning speed. With nothing short of the survival of our planet at stake, we need to move fast.

What we have found in the hemp industry versus the much slower adaptation on the medical side of the plant is academia, and higher education brings with it credibility. Universities across the country are sponsoring studies in all things hemp, but the one I am the most excited about is hemp feed for our food chain animals.

I listened to the two speakers at the Missouri Hemp Trade Association meeting in Butler, MO, at least six times and put together a lengthy vocabulary list of farming terms I did not understand. But I promise, if you are a farmer and you want to start a hemp crop, these two gals answered most of the questions any farmer will have right out of the barn gate. The meeting is available on the Missouri Hemp Trade Association Facebook page. I strongly recommend listening to these women at least twice if you have any interest in hemp farming at all.

Michele Nelson, a crop researcher and scientist, is the co-founder of Performance Crop Research (PCR), an independent crop research company and co-owner of South Bend Industrial Hemp Company in Central Kansas.

The second speaker, Morgan Tweet, has a background in chemical engineering. Tweet’s dad approached her in 2014 about the number of hemp farmers with no infrastructure for processing. Dad wanted to build a hemp processing plant in Montana. “I just thought he was the ‘crazy hemp guy,’ but by 2019, it turned into something.” The Hemp Feed Coalition focuses its efforts on the feed market through the seed market.

For the past several years, Tweet and her dad have worked with Federal and State regulatory agencies, along with a multitude of universities, to provide research into using the high Omega fatty acid hemp seed to feed a variety of livestock. Here is where hemp intersects with medical cannabis. It seems we have the farmers’ own big farma to contend with if we want companion animals such as horses, donkeys, mules, and food source animals to gain access to the healthier world of hemp and cannabinoids. Once again, we are dealing with Moffit’s Ants. That big chain of ants that have, up to now, rather poorly but efficiently kept our depleted food supplies going with the inferior products of corn, soy, and canola.

So far, in today’s evolved hemp industry, things are looking exceptionally promising, especially in seed feed. Farmers and researchers like Tweet and Nelson are turning to universities that are turning to investors to fund a list of studies longer than my arm. Across the board, every study about hemp-fed animals has had one consistent report; the critters are calmer and “happier.”

To clarify, happiness of the herd was not what I was looking for, although that would be a given. Aren’t we all happier with satisfied, well-nourished endocannabinoid systems? I was looking for a way to get those endocannabinoids into our non-CBD-using populations by ingesting livestock — cows, pigs, and chickens, etc. Alas, I assumed wrong, which is okay. The huge health benefits to our kids eating food with a higher nutritional content and no GMO products is eliminating the need for antibiotics and hormones. When we quit drugging our food, we quit drugging ourselves and our children. CBD does not transfer into our steaks, but the beautiful marbling of the omega fats does, improving the taste and tenderness. On a positive note, this will make getting seed approved for food chain animals easier without testing for CBD or THC. So why the delay, with literally dozens of universities across the U.S. researching feed for everything from rabbits to horses, and with zero (as we could have told them) risk to the livestock? The story returns to the same battles we fight on the medical side of cannabis, big farma (corporate farming) has its own big pharma, and it is called the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). These guys are the ants, the fluster-clucks of regulatory organizations, that all seem to be in line with one another, with Round-Up clogging their sinuses too much to smell the lovely terpenes of the cannabis plant. Without the AAFCO stamp of approval on a bag of grain, it won’t be sold on the open market.

I read a study in a nutritional magazine two years ago about how the soil depletion from no longer recycling wasted food back into compost has diminished the overall nutrition of carrots and potatoes by 40 percent. We are what we eat, and hemp-fed food will not just make us healthier. In the long run, hemp will regenerate the soil, allowing that nutritional content back into carrots and potatoes without all the dietary depletion, pesticides, herbicides, and diluted foods we are getting now.

The Federal Government did start taking comments on hemp feed in the animal industry. Last year in response, a “white letter” was written to the FDA with the usual “more research needed” response from AAFCO. I looked for actual live people behind this letter, including the author, but was unsuccessful. I guess since the government declared a “corporation” as “the people” a few years ago, a corporation’s signa-

and Bipolar Disorder

ipolar disorder is a not uncommon mental illness. Around 2.8 percent of adult Americans suffer from Bipolar disorder (BD). This makes BD one of the most common mental illnesses. Given the unfortunate stigma associated with mental disorders, many who suffer from BD never seek diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, the true figure is likely much higher, with some sources estimating 5 percent.

While it’s normal to experience times of emotional highs and lows, BDs experience these cyclically in the extremes of “mania,” alternating with “chronic depression.” For this reason, bipolar disorder was formerly known as “manic depression.” BD is categorized as Type 1 (episodes of full mania with loss of connection to reality) and Type 2 (major depression with episodes of hypomania). With either type, bouts of depression are generally more common than mania.

The risk bipolar patients pose is generally more to themselves than to others. The risk of suicide death among bipolar patients is 10–30 times higher than the general population. Losing a bipolar friend or family member to suicide is devastating (as this author personally knows). The risk is greatest during depressive states and may call for careful monitoring and emotional support by friends and family.

Some claim that such self-medication is superior to the drugs prescribed by psychiatrists. There are good pharmacological reasons for believing that the prescription of synthetic cannabinoids or standardized plant extracts may have a therapeutic potential in BD.”1 BD patients often report that their bipolar drugs “flatten” their emotions to where they just feel “numb.” That feeling of consistent emotional deadness may prove worse than periodic bouts of chronic depression. Some also report that they actually enjoy their bouts of mania and are, therefore, willing to suffer through bouts of depression for the sake of maintaining bouts of mania. For these reasons and others, BD patients are notorious for going off their meds.

Perhaps the most commonly prescribed BD medication is lithium carbonate. Provided it’s dosed properly, Li2CO3 can often prove beneficial. The discovery of lithium for treating bipolar disorder has an interesting backstory: It was once a common practice for doctors to refer their “melancholy” patients to “sanitariums” in southwestern states (e.g., New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, etc.) where mineral hot springs are common. After only a few days, patients often miraculously recovered. The effects, however, were seldom long-lasting. After analyzing the mineral content of these hot springs, it was determined that they contained an essential mineral deficient in most diets, lithium orotate. For patients sensitive to the deficiency, lithium orotate proved to be a magic elixir.

As is often the case with mental disorders, BD patients are prone to “self-medicating,” alcohol being a favorite. Self-medicating may provide some temporary relief, but over time may worsen symptoms.

Given that BD patients also commonly experience anxiety, with cyclical bouts of deep depression, self-medicating to relieve symptoms is understandable. This is especially true where the patient has been prescribed a cocktail of meds that prove ineffective, if not worsening symptoms. BD patients are also at risk should they combine their prescription bipolar meds with alcohol and street drugs. This can result in unpleasant drug interactions. The same applies to combining BD meds with cannabis. Even cross-fading (combining alcohol with cannabis) can prove problematic for BDs.

The long-standing hostility against cannabis by the psychiatric establishment has proven a significant impediment to clinical research in determining its effectiveness in treating BD. As such, studies are scant and generally quite biased against cannabis. In an effort to prove that cannabis is dangerous, one thing they have studied is the correlation between adolescent cannabis abuse and the potential for triggering early-onset BD. While correlation does not equal causation, the use of medical cannabis in developing brains should be approached with caution.

What of adult BD patients and cannabis?

Anecdotally we know that many BD patients claim they’ve achieved results far superior to any prescription meds and without all the unpleasant side effects. Medical cannabis calms the

hyperactivity typical of hypomania and mania, as well as lifting mood during episodes of depression. It’s important to note, however, that THC is bi-phasic, meaning that a little can help while too much can exacerbate symptoms (particularly anxiety).

BD patients commonly report they receive the best relief from strains that are calming such as Indica and Indica-dominant hybrids. The safest approach is to seek out 1:1 strains, i.e., equal parts CBD to THC, if not even greater parts CBD. Micro-dosing is also safest, i.e., start with a very low dose and increase slowly until the desired effect is achieved. The immediate effect achieved by smoking and vaping is safer than edibles because edibles are far more challenging to titrate due to the lag time it takes for the liver to process and take effect.

What Is CBG Hemp Flower?
