Spotlight is produced to keep you informed on what is going on in your community and to keep residents up-to-date on what we are doing here at the NDC. Winter is here and life in South Kilburn is as hectic as ever.

We have preparations for Christmas to do, the New Year to think about, and as always a lot of work to do at South Kilburn NDC. November has been a busy, but exciting month in South Kilburn. SKNDC and Brent Council have won the “Excellence in Regeneration” award at the UK Housing Awards. This is a real achievement, and is thanks to the hard work of everyone in and around South Kilburn – well done. For more information look at the page opposite.

We’ve also now named the Albert Road Demonstration Homes, which will be called Thames Court. As you can see by walking past, they are really taking shape.

Christmas is just round the corner and there is so much to look forward to. There is lots going on in South Kilburn over the festive period. For a brief list of what is happening, turn to page 9.

As ever there will be much to do in South Kilburn in the New Year. In early 2006 we will be announcing who will be our delivery partner to carry forward the Masterplan to its conclusion, and during the first half of 2006 we shall be opening Thames Court (Albert Road Demonstration Homes).

So an exciting time ahead.

I would also quickly like to make an apology from the last issue. Contrary to what was written, Richard Killen is the Monitoring and Evaluation Chair and Bryan Binning is the Risk Assessment Chair.

I would like to wish everyone in South Kilburn a very happy festive season and all the best for the New Year.

Celebrations We have so much to celebrate this month! Christians will be enjoying Christmas Eve on the 24th and Christmas Day on the 25th December. A time when the birth of Jesus Christ, the Saviour is remembered and celebrated.

We have all maybe heard about Santa Claus. But who was this man Santa Claus? Santa Claus is based on a real person, St Nicholas. He was a very shy man who wanted to help poor people. Legend claims that one day he climbed onto the roof of a house to drop a purse of money down the chimney as he was too timid to go to the front door.

The purse landed in a stocking that a little girl had hung up to dry by the fire. As tradition many children still hang up stockings over the fireplace at Christmas to see if they are lucky enough to receive a present. (Turn to page 19 and enter the Kids Krew competition to tell us what you enjoyed about the holiday season!)

Jewish families will be celebrating Chanukah. This holiday celebrates events which took place over 2,300 years ago; a battle between Judah and his army against the Syrians for control of the Temple of Jerusalem. On this triumphant defeat, Judah entered the Temple to light the Eternal Light which had been extinguished. He found a tiny jug of oil with enough for a single day. Then a miracle occurred as the tiny amount of oil stayed lit for eight days. The Festival of the Lights, Chanukah, lasts for eight days to commemorate the miracle of the oil.

New Year follows on the 1st of January bringing new hope and faith in life.

Groundwork Prize Winner from the Healthy Living Fair Abayan Jama Mahamud , 24 years old from Princess Road was the lucky winner of the Groundwork raffle ticket competition.

She won a pot of garden herbs and tickets for herself and her mother to see ‘The Lion King’ at The Lycium Theatre.

Her surprised mother, Jamila Mahamud said: “I never win anything and I entered the competition for her and she won! I like herbs and gardening, so when we won a pot of garden herbs and the tickets I was so proud of her!”.

WINNER OF THE 2005 UK HOUSING AWARD for ‘EXCELLENCE IN REGENERATION’ in partnership with Brent Council South Kilburn NDC and Brent Council have been recognised at the UK Housing Award 2005, by winning the award for “Excellence in Regeneration”. The award ceremony which took place on Wednesday 2nd November at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane is one of the most prestigious annual regeneration awards.

The award “Excellence in Regeneration” recognises all aspects of the NDC’s work, from the built environment to Income and Employment, Crime and Community, Young People and Education and Widening Participation. However the award made special mention of South Kilburn’s innovative approach to community consultation, from steering groups, community forums and residents being directly involved in the design and planning of new Show Homes and constructively guide the future building programme in the area.

SKNDC Chief Executive, Jack Davies said: “The award is recognition of all the hard work and dedication put in by residents, SKNDC and Brent Council in order to deliver the vision for the area of creating a desirable place to live, learn and work.”

Brent Council's lead member for Housing and Community Care, Councillor Bobby Thomas said: "I am delighted that this award recognises that by strong community involvement we are seeking to give local people what they want.

The close partnership between South Kilburn New Deal for Communities and Brent Council means we are able not only to improve the design of our new homes, but look at a complete program of improvement aimed at raising standards in all areas including the local environment, education, and training for jobs."

Newly re-elected Chair of South Kilburn NDC Board and resident, Tanya Samuel said; “I am over the moon at winning the award. I can’t wait to get back to South Kilburn and tell everyone, whose hard work over the last five years has made this happen. We now look forward to building on this work over the next five years. Whilst we are always looking to improve what we do, it is very nice to be recognised for what we do well.”

The award was presented by a representative from United Housing and the award ceremony was sponsored by Inside Housing.

Seasons Greetings Last year when I wished you all a happy holiday and a joyous New Year, I told you of how proud I was of the great strides we had made together in regenerating the area. This year has also seen even further achievements that have made a large contribution to achieving your vision for the area to “create a desirable place to live, learn and work”.

The Show Homes are nearing completion and will be open in March 2006 for every person in the area to view and inspect.

The extension to the Salvation Army Hall has now been completed and residents are benefiting from the extra services that are being offered. The work on the Granville and Carlton centre refurbishment will be completed early in the New Year. Also work on 200 of the 775 homes to be refurbished as part of the Masterplan has begun.

Notwithstanding all of the physical regeneration that is taking place we have implemented a project that will see the ringfencing of 4 full-time police officers dedicated to the area to help reduce crime level even further. We have also

supported projects in our schools that have seen GCSE A to C grades significantly increase from 30% to 40% this year.

As well as this, we have been running a number of health promotion events aimed at increasing awareness of preventative measures that you can take to improve your long term health.

It is also my honour to inform you, the residents of South Kilburn, of the recent news on winning the ‘Excellence in Regeneration Award’ at the UK Housing Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 2nd November held at The Hilton Hotel in Central London. The award is a true reflection of all the hard work and dedication of residents and staff.

So as you can see it’s been a busy year! This will continue next year as work will commence on the first phase of the Masterplan with 130 homes and a Nursery being built, which will turn hopes and aspiration into reality.

Designer kitchens and bathrooms for Brent tenants FIVE THOUSAND homes in Brent have a new kitchen and bathroom thanks to the Government’s Decent Homes Programme.

Hundreds of tenants, who rent their properties from Brent Housing Partnership (BHP), had their kitchens and bathrooms renovated and their homes rewired in the past three years. By the end of 2007, three years ahead of schedule, all homes managed by BHP, which meet the criteria will be upgraded.

Kilburn tenant, Pat Biles, is one of hundreds of tenants happy with their new kitchen and bathroom. She said: ‘In one day they ripped out my kitchen and bathroom and by the end of the day I had a working bathroom.’ Contractors took just two weeks to complete the whole project. Pat said: ‘I chose the cabinets, tiles, lino and helped design the kitchen. And I had loads of extra sockets put in, a boiler and smoke alarms. I couldn’t be happier.’

Pat also said the workmen did a great job: ‘The Niblock contractors were brilliant,’ she said. ‘They are very hardworking and very approachable. You can sit and chat and they will listen.’

After spending £40 million on the Decent Homes programme 72% of all homes managed by Brent Housing Partnership now pass the Governments Decent Homes Standard.

Brighter Futures 10 TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY! ARE YOU AGED 14 TO 18?

Do you want to see QPR take on Millwall at Loftus Road Stadium on February 11th?

QPR have ten free tickets plus transport to and from the ground to give away to any South Kilburn resident aged between 14 and 18.

There are only ten tickets available and these will be allocated on a first come-first served basis.

In order to get a ticket you must complete an application form available from Health Matters, 2 Peel Precinct, Kilburn.

The ten successful residents will be informed by letter no later than Wednesday 1st February.

Young South Kilburn resident, Osman Kakay has been spotted by coaches of the football project and has now had successful trials for local team Queen’s Park Rangers. Osman who likes to play as a striker is now playing for QPR’s under 9 team at their Centre of Excellence.

The Football Project’s popular holiday courses will again be running during February half-term.

Nick Perchard, co-ordinator of the Football Project said “I am delighted that we have are getting more people playing football locally and it is great news that Osman has made it into the QPR Centre of Excellence, he thoroughly deserves it”

A Slice of the Apple

Apple Facts . . .

Outside Blake Court on Friday 21st October, local residents took part in Apple Day fun! The event marked National Apple Day, and was organised by Groundwork West London and Health Matters, a project funded by South Kilburn NDC. The joint event coincided with similar events going on all around the country to celebrate the 15th National Apple Day.

• Apples are a good source of natural sugar and vitamins, which help the immune system.

• Apples contain natural sugar which is better for your teeth and energy levels than the kind of sugar found in sweets and drinks.

• Apples are virtually fat free and contain just 80 calories.

• Apples contain anti-oxidants, which help prevent cancer and ageing.

What is Apple Day?

Well, ‘Apple day’ is a celebration of apples, orchards and locally grown produce which started back in 1990. At the event in South Kilburn residents took part in apple tasting, longest peel competitions, smoothie tasting and other fun activities related to the noble apple. An apple tree was planted in Blake Court's new community garden, and free apples, recipe sheets and healthy eating advice was given out to everyone.

Mark Patterson, Community Gardener for Groundwork West London in South Kilburn, told Spotlight: "People sometimes think of apples as boring, but they're really missing out. There are so many tasty varieties coming into season now and hopefully today we will get more people enjoying our home-grown apples again!”

The winner of the longest peel competition was Linda Charles of Stafford Road, South Kilburn. Spotlight salutes you as the longest apple skin peeler!

On the beat The launch of a new Police Team for South Kilburn New Deal for Communities was a jubilant day for the residents of South Kilburn. Four new police constables were assigned to work solely within the South Kilburn NDC area. The event took place at The Salvation Army from 12-2pm on Wednesday 12th October.

The afternoon attracted over 100 residents, NDC and project staff. It was a great opportunity for members of the community and those who work in crime and community safety to meet and discuss issues with the police team over a buffet lunch. The new team of police officers includes: Sergeant Simon Brooker, PC Nicholas Clarke, PC Zain Sibiliant, PC Gill Levy, and PC Ged Hasse.

The group also heard speeches from special guests and representatives including Borough Commander Andy Bamber, board members Councillor Mary Arnold and Chief Inspector Raj Kohli.

This project is a partnership project jointly funded between the Metropolitan Police and the NDC. Over 500 residents in South Kilburn completed a questionnaire of what they think the police team’s priorities should be over the next year. The priorities set were drugs, anti social behaviour, speeding and motoring, burglary and robbery. These priorities will be reviewed on a yearly basis and a steering group will meet quarterly to discuss the police team’s progress.

Resident Board members Bryan Binning and Peter Jones were very pleased with the new Police Team initiative. Peter said: “This is hopefully the start of a rewarding relationship giving the team of police officers the chance to get to know the community, and more importantly the community are able to get to know them”. Bryan also voiced his comments saying, “The launch addressed the issues and I hope that it is successful in achieving and meeting our needs in community policing”.

Amanda Wood, Theme Manager for Crime and Community Safety for South Kilburn NDC opened the launch and said: “We look forward to seeing an improving relationship between the community and the police as they concentrate on the priorities of the residents of South Kilburn”.

Interactive “Who wants to be a millionaire” Forum provides real answers…

All those who took part received refreshments and a £10 High Street voucher. The event was also attended by lots of children who all received a goodie bag.

Jo Merriman, Communications Manager said, “It is great that so many people came and attended the forum, all the information gained will help our work reflect the needs and wants of the local population. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part”

The 18th October saw the third South Kilburn New Deal for Communities Interactive Forum held at Kilburn Park School.

Over 60 people took the time to come and complete the interactive survey in the packed hall, despite the bad weather.

As always the results are invaluable and encouraging for the NDC and their projects. Participants were asked a number of questions, about their views of the NDC, our themes and the local area. There were some very interesting results. We were pleased to see that 87% of the people who took part read Spotlight – thank you!

Demonstration homes have been named. information on the new homes such as the history, building design, allocation process and management to assist them in making a decision as to accept or refuse the offer.

Those tenants who wished to accept the offer were invited to an exhibition located on the open space at Winterleys on the 26 & 27 October 2005. On display were a range of kitchen units, floor covering, colour scheme, tiles and individual layout of each flat/maisonettes.

A local Resident Group has now chosen the name of the Demonstration Homes as THAMES COURT. The formal address will be 1-20 Thames Court, Albert Road, Kilburn NW6 5DD. The scheme was advertised through the Council’s Choice Base Letting scheme (Locata) on the 15 July 2005 where over 200 applicants bided for the new homes.

A total of 58 tenants were short listed, all the properties have now been allocated.

On the 31st August 2005, 20 tenants were invited to an informal presentation where they would have the opportunity to meet their new neighbours and be given

SK Youth Board members -Share their Views Three members of the South Kilburn Youth Board, Gavin Fontaine 12, Jazzelee Rhodes 15, and Dwight Okeke 11 years old represented South Kilburn NDC at a consultation weekend on the Government’s Green Paper Youth Matters organised by The Campaign Company.

They were three of the sixty young people invited from New Deal for Communities and Neighbourhood Management Programmes across the UK, to spend a weekend held at Winmarleigh House, near Lancaster. They took part in both physical team-building activities, and classroom-based consultation sessions.

Funds for young people, volunteering, and information, advice and guidance for young people.

Jazzelee Rhodes said: “I had a brilliant time, it was a great opportunity to meet new people, to have a chance to tell the Government what we think, and of course to have a lot of fun!”

This weekend residential trip was funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in order to inform a response to the Government's Green Paper on Youth Matters.

The Youth Matters Green Paper aims to reshape the services that are currently available to young people and sets out a plan to achieve this.

The Marian Youth Club and South Kilburn Festival Committee Children's Christmas party is sponsored by the Holiday Activities Project. It will be taking place at the Marian Community Centre on Thursday 15th December from 6pm to 9pm.

The party is open to all children under 12 who live in South Kilburn.

Half -Term Fun On Wednesday 26th October 2005 at Park Royal, 20 young people between the ages of 8-14 year’s old from South Kilburn had a fun day of bowling and playing in the arcades in Park Royal MegaBowl. This day trip was sponsored by The Holiday Activities Project.

The group provided valuable opinions and advice on the Government’s proposals such as Opportunities Cards and Opportunities

The Holiday Activities Project provided a funding grant of £500 for the event; this enabled everyone to attend the event free of charge. Hot dogs, chips and drinks were free from everyone who attended! The 'Frightening Three' Frances, Jenny and Mike dished up the food and 'Scary' Mary and Carlo hosted the bar for the adults.

DJ 'Count Dracula' Leon hosted the event and held lots of games such as musical statues and dancing competitions. The T.C 'Monster' helped Leon select and play party tracks. The children wore impressive costumes from scary bones outfits, fairy angels and magic magicians!

‘I LOVE S.K’- South Kilburn Profile Mrs. Pamela Joyce Charman is currently a South Kilburn NDC Board Member who enjoys representing the interests of her community. Pamela has worked as school governor for 14 years at St Augustine’s High School. She completed an Access Course at Queens Park School in 1996 followed by three years studying English Literature and Art History at Goldsmiths College University of London and successfully graduated in September 1999.

1. How long have you lived in South Kilburn?

Since I came to be Assistant Warden in Gordon House, on Malvern Road, since May 1978.

2. What is your earliest South Kilburn memory?

My astonishment at seeing a diverse group of nationalities, getting along together. I had previously come from Abbey Wood in South East London.

3. Tell us what you want us to know about you.

First and foremost I am a loyal Board Member of South Kilburn NDC. I have been elected three times and find it challenging and rewarding.

Health Matters Open Day Many residents came out to the Health Matters Open Day on Friday 14th October 2005 from 1 – 3 pm. It was a great opportunity to network with local projects, providers and meet new people.

David Marin, Health project worker said: “It was good to see new faces at Health Matters. Visitors had the chance to find out about our work within the community, what we have to offer and how we work. Thanks to everyone who attended”.

4. Do you work or study in the area?

I have been a school governor at St Augustine’s High School for 14 years. I did an Access Course at Queens Park School in 1996 followed by three years at Goldsmiths College. I graduated in September 1999 in English Literature and Art History.

Last week I participated in a poetry workshop at a school. I write poetry but I am not published, except when Spotlight prints one!

5. What does New Deal for Communities mean to you?

Everything, its our future.

6. Have you been involved in any of The New Deal for Communities Projects?

I regularly sit and judge projects on whether they should be continually funded.

7. What would you like to see change in South Kilburn?

I would like people to be proud that they live here. Everything is possible if you only believe in yourself.

8. What do you like most about living in South Kilburn?

We have a vibrant ethnic racial mix, folk say hello and smile . We’re near the London Theatres by underground. Little Venice, the canal and Oxford Street.

9. What do you dislike most about living in South Kilburn?

There used to be graffiti, old cars and dereliction. Now people have got back their pride. My daughter went to Queens Park School, then went on to Kings College, Cambridge and is now a lawyer.

10. Where’s the best place to eat in or around South Kilburn?

Meson Bilbao Malvern Road, a Spanish restaurant. I’m going there tonight as a birthday treat and there’s a marvellous fish and chip opposite Queen’s Park station.

11. What is your message to the people of South Kilburn?

Stride forward with pride. I graduated 6 weeks before my seventieth birthday! If I can do it so can you, self belief is tantamount. I hope to continue making improvements in our community. Our youth are our future.

12. Who do you admire in the South Kilburn community?

In my opinion, Joseph Awosika NDC Board Member, he’s good enough to be a Member of Parliament!

13. What are your future aspirations for the Board?

That it will continue to move onwards and upwards improving our environment.

14. What are you doing to help your community?

I smile at people. Listen to them- that’s important. I care about people that’s why I’m an NDC Board member.

Goodwill at The Salvation Army Good will indeed! How lovely it is to celebrate Christmas amongst people who care. On the 25th December 2005 The Salvation Army Community Church on Chichester Road will be open to those residents who may find celebrating Christmas difficult. The Church would especially like to welcome single parents, young adults and older members of the community.

The Church will be open from 10.30 am with presents under the tree for children to open and play with, as well as other fun activities, whilst adults meet new people in the community and indulge themselves with treats!

An optional Christmas Day family church service will also take place at 10:45 am. Christmas dinner with all the trimmings will then be served at 12:30 pm with the day concluding at 2:30 pm.

Drama Group for all Ages Elders Voice is planning an exciting new project and are looking for eager participants.

The South Kilburn Intergenerational Drama Group is aimed towards two specific age groups: 13-25 year olds and 60+ year olds.

The group will be meeting once a fortnight for drama games, improvisation and lots of fun. They will be working towards putting on performances in South Kilburn around May/June 2006.

Details on potential courses (all to be confirmed) 1. Shop work For all South Kilburn residents interested in shop work that need support with their English or need to gain an English qualification to put on their CVs.

This course has really helped me with my confidence to go and find a job. It was really great to meet an employer.

English for shop work helped me get ready to take a national English test which will really help on my CV.

2. Door Supervisors For all South Kilburn residents interested in gaining employment as door security operatives. This qualification is required by the industry.

The rules have changed and to work as a bouncer I needed to get the new qualification. My tutors were really helpful in getting me through this course.

I like the fact that this course not only gave me the paper to show my boss so I could work, but it also helped me improve my negotiation skills and manage aggressive behaviour in others.

3. First Aid for the home For all South Kilburn residents that want to gain a first aid certificate either to add to their CV’s (as employers pay a higher hourly rate for qualified staff,) to enhance their own home safety, or to contribute to their voluntary work.

I didn’t realise how important knowing about first aid was until my daughter burnt her hand and I knew what to do.

I told my manager I was going on a First Aid Course and he was really pleased. When I passed he gave me a pay rise to be the office first aider.

4. Back to learning For all South Kilburn residents that want to gain skills to prepare them for return to full or part time learning.

I was scared to go back to college and this course gave me the confidence to sign up for a course at the college. I even feel less scared about exams and know that not every course has exams; some are based on course work.

I learnt really useful tips on how to prepare my studying; it seems so much easier now.

5. Spade to spoon For all South Kilburn residents that want to understand more about food preparation, food hygiene or nutrition.

Diwali lights up Canterbury Court Last month marked the start of the Hindu Festival of Light, known as ‘Diwali’. The word Diwali literally means row of lights and comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Dipawali’. Diwali is traditionally celebrated by Hindus, although many people from other cultures also celebrate it.

One of our South Kilburn residents Beena Raithatha invited Spotlight to come into her home to see how her family celebrates Diwali. Beena said: “Food, especially sweets and desserts is an essential part of our family’s Diwali celebration and fireworks!”

Traditionally known as a harvest festival, ‘Diwali’ signifies the end of the raining season in India, when crops have been harvested and new crops are sown.

This coincides with the sighting of the new moon heralding the beginning of the Hindu New Year.

People in India celebrate Diwali with firework displays and by aluminating their homes with candle divas (lights in tiny terracotta pots). The light symbolises a reaffirmation of hope and renewal of life. Houses are cleaned and floors are decorated with patterns.

New Clothes and beautiful jewellery are worn and hands are decorated with henna. Diwali is a huge family festival and families also visit friends to exchange gifts and sweets. The Goddess Laksmi, traditionally associated with prosperity is worshipped in particular during this time.

Real issues hit home A play based on the theme of domestic violence called 'Hitting Home' took place on 27th October at 7pm in the Marian Centre, Stafford Road. The play was organised by the Safe & Sound Community Safety Project, and was devised and performed by ‘Blue Sky Arts and Media’ staff and students.

An audience of nearly 60 people watched a cast of ten young people act out a number of scenes showing what the affects of domestic violence can have on a family. An individual’s self-esteem can disappear, children’s education can suffer and the family lose friends.

One student spoke about the challenge they faced whilst rehearsing, “It felt like we were doing something important, even though it was difficult at times. I remember thinking this could be one of us.”

The play finished with the cast revealing the high figures of domestic violence and encouraging people suffering from this crime to talk to someone and not suffer in silence. A question and answer session followed with Helen Oliver, Brent Council's Domestic Violence Coordinator, informing the audience what support is available and how to access it.

Sam Holdsworth from Blue Sky Arts and Media produced the show and said: “All the students put a great deal of work into the project.

They explored the complex nature of domestic violence and the integrity and sensitivity they displayed is a testament to their hard work and determination to portray the issues as accurately as possible”.

Housing Update Granville New Homes Steering Group Celebrates 1 year!

The Granville New Homes project is one of the first phases of the implementation of the Masterplan that will regenerate South Kilburn. To ensure that the needs and aspirations of the local community are represented in this project, a Resident Steering Group was formed in September 2004.

During the past year members of this group have been actively involved with Brent Council, South Kilburn NDC and a number of specialist consultants, to oversee all stages of this project’s development.

In order to celebrate the Steering Group’s one year anniversary and in appreciation for the time, dedication and efforts of all its members, a dinner was held to mark the occasion on Friday 23rd of September at the ‘Little Bay’ restaurant on Belsize Road in Kilburn.

Ines Carvalho from The South Kilburn Housing Project team told Spotlight: “It was an opportunity to look back at the groups’ accomplishments and to recognise that, working as a team, we have set a successful example of what can be achieved in South Kilburn”.

Granville New Homes General Project Progress Over the past 6 months, the Granville New Homes (GNH) project has gone from strength to strength. The new homes will be located on the open land known as the Granville Open Space and Pilgrim’s Corner and once completed will provide 130 new flats and maisonettes for the local community. The development includes a new and expanded Tabot Youth Centre and a temporary “pocket park” located at the heart of the project. It is important to note that these will be the first new Council homes built in the borough in the last 20 years.

Site and soil investigations have been completed, the design team (Levitt Bernstein Associates), and the Client Team (Baily Garner) have been appointed with the contractor expected to be commissioned and ready to start on site in early 2006.

The planning application has been submitted and is expected to be determined in January 2006.

Public Arts Strategy As part of the GNH project an innovative and fun public arts strategy has been devised to ensure that all residents living in SK have an opportunity to engage meaningfully with the project.

The Granville Cube has arrived!

The arts programme will focus around the ‘GRANVILLE CUBE’ a bright yellow metal 2.3 x 2.3 x 2.3m art structure. It has a seating area, a table and a billboard. It can be easily transformed and adapted to use as a stage, a party or a workshop! A previous edition of Spotlight featured the launch of the public arts strategy. Polly, the artist responsible commented, “this is a golden opportunity for all residents to get involved in a fun way with major building projects”.

Granville Cube will be on your doorsteps from this winter up until the completion of the Granville New Homes scheme. You can find the Cube at the end of Princess Road (on the green nearest to the shops), it will be there until construction works start. The second location will be in Peel Precinct for the entire duration of the construction works and the third location will be in the pocket park itself – Look out for this structure it is really fun!!!

The cube is there for everyone to use.

Many residents have already been actively involved, coming up with ideas of how to use it. Over the next month and with the help of local residents, the cube will host …. a gallery, a jumble sale, a candy shop, a music stage, and a story telling area.

The ‘Tabot Mix’ dance group from the Tabot centre will be taking over the Cube with a one-off performance very soon! A Christmas party at the Cube with mince pies and all those Xmas trimmings is in plan. All activities and events will be advertised on the cube so please check the billboard for dates of events as well as other local information!!

Some examples of the art work will be specially commissioned and blown up to be used as permenant art pieces within the communal spaces of the new homes.

If you have any ideas of how you would like to use the cube please contact Polly (no experience in art is required however expect all sessions to be very interactive), or if you need assistance and want to discuss your projects.

Granville New Homes Steering Group (GNH)

Design Study Tour to the Netherlands

The GNH Steering group continues to drive forward and steer the project from strength to strength. All the 16 residents are fully committed and have successfully completed in-house, external, specialist and technical training to support the project activities and outcomes.

The Chair of the group Venice Knight has due to work commitments unfortunately had to step down from her position. The vice chair of the GNH steering group Tony Lester stated “we will all greatly and sadly miss Venice and wish her well in the future, her excellent contributions to the group have been invaluable and although she is stepping down as Chair she will continue to join us in future meetings.

A new chair will be voted in by the group in the near future.

The Steering Group came up with the idea of participating on a study tour to explore best practice in design and construction. After conducting some research, Netherlands was selected (Amsterdam and Rotterdam) as it had a number of highly relevant schemes to look at and gave the group the opportunity to learn from other European regeneration case studies.

The study tour was aimed at giving the group an opportunity to explore examples of best practice in Design and Construction.

• examine different types and practices of resident involvement.

• design and construction schemes that are used to make buildings sustainable.

• gather residents views of what their experience has been in the new developments.

• the opportunity to learn from negative aspects that arose from the project’s implementation.

• meet the project teams involved in the development of projects and learn from their experience of managing and implementing the process.

• to promote a less formal relationship between residents, council officers, the design team and independent advisers to achieve a confident working relationship.

• to provide the steering group with a memorable and educational experience in the implementation of the Granville New Homes project.

Other Consultation Events To ensure that all stakeholders who are either directly or indirectly affected by the new homes are able to have their say, Brent Officers are organising specific and targeted consultation with community groups.

Tabot Centre Brent Officers prepared a successful interactive briefing session with parents of the Tabot Centre on 4 October 2005. The Tabot is also working on a business plan supported by NDc’s Project Development Team, to ensure the future of the service is sustainable.

Tenant Choice

Employment and Training opportunities

Once the tenants from Phase 1 of the Masterplan have been identified and pre-allocated, they will form a special group which will be consulted on the various tenant choice items available within the new homes.

They will also undergo training relating to ‘how to be a good neighbour’, waste, compost and recycling management, together with gardening techniques.

There are interesting and rewarding opportunities for employment and training with the various consultants involved in the scheme. Residents of South Kilburn who are interested in knowing more about the design process can gain experience with the Architects Levitt Bernstein Associates. However if project management and technical understanding are more your thing then a position with Baily Garner will be more suitable.

The Public Artist also has a shadowing and training opportunity working with Polly the Public Artist.

European LIFE Funding We are aiming high by applying to the European Union for the funding for environmental sustainability elements of the scheme.

Brent Council and the South Kilburn NDC have partnered up, with a private housing agency experienced in delivering ‘Green Technologies’ based in Belgium. The LIFE programme funds projects which are considered to be innovative and at the forefront of technological and social advancements. As the Granville New Homes project incorporates many of these features, the team are hopeful on receiving funding.

This funding would put a European and International focus on South Kilburn.

Days gone by – Kilburn Wells Kilburn dates back to Roman times but derives its name from the Anglo Saxon word for cattle stream, ‘Kelebourne’, which flowed from Hampstead to Hyde Park.

Kilburn village grew up around Watling Road a major trade route to the north of the country (now Edgware Road).

Benedictine Nuns founded Kilburn Priory in 1134. Pilgrims travelling to the shrine at St Albans would stop here for rest and refreshments. By the middle of the 15th century two inns had been built. In 1714 a spring was discovered and the Bell Pub started selling the spring water as a cure for stomach ailments as it contained the mineral iron. It later became popular as a tea garden. The “Wells” also had another less gentile reputation as a venue for dog fighting and bare-knuckle boxing, as well as becoming notorious as a duelling spot.

One of the most well known residents was the newsagent W H Smith who lived at Kilburn House on the north side of Kilburn Square from 1839 to 1856.

Kilburn Wells turn of the 18th/19th Century

A railway station opened at Kilburn High Road in December 1851 and the Underground arrived in Kilburn Park in 1915. However, the main transport used was the bus - at one point 45 buses an hour passed through!

Go Nuts this Festive Season!

Mix together with 200g/7oz of chopped brazil nuts, 100g/3oz of sliced tomatoes, 1 tbsp of oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Genesis planning application no more…

Genesis Housing Association have scrapped their plans to build a tower block at the site of the Salusbury Road car park, immediately south of Queen’s Park Station.

Genesis now plan to submit a new proposal for the site after wide consultation with local councillors, residents and Brent Council.

A meeting of local residents and Brent Council’s Planning Service on the future of the site was held on Thursday 3rd November, which NDC representative attended and spoke at. It was agreed to setup

at “stakeholder meeting” of all interested parties to discuss what would be the best kind of development for the Queen’s Park Station area. NDC will have significant representations on this group along with Queen’s Park residents and the Stop The Tower campaign.
