Painting rain Photo above: Orchid on a tree beside a road inside DYU.

Rainy Night by Vito Huang Ze-han 黃則翰. (Oil on canvas, 2012).

I have been painting for over 10 years.

When I was 7 years old my mother sent me to a children’s art centre. From then on I knew that

drawing and painting were my favourite hobbies. It was so enjoyable using watercolour pens and watercoloured paints to make a piece of white paper colourful. When I was 16 years old I was admitted to an art school. There were so many students just like me there. We all loved art so much that we all tried to paint and draw better than each other. That improved my drawing and painting skills a lot. In 2012, I drew a big painting called Rainy Night. I used the realism method to draw and paint it. I went to senior high school in Keelung. This is a really rainy city. I broke three umbrellas in one year in Keelung! However, Keelung’s rain inspired this painting. I hope you like it. _______________________ 1

Roger 顧立偉, a first year student of

Industrial Design 工業設計 at DYU, tells We also travelled through Puli and visited Cingjing where we saw many farm animals. us about his adventures in Puli 埔里鎮; Our final destination was Toroko National Park. Cingjing 清境; Wuling 武嶺, Mount Hehuan 合歡山; and Toroko National Park 太魯閣國家公園.

One Tuesday morning, because we did not

have classes, my roommates and I felt quite bored so we decided to set out on an adventure. We rode our motorbikes to Wuling which is on the eastern side of Mount Hehuan. The road there is the highest road in Taiwan reaching an elevation of 3, 275 metres. We were very excited because we had not been there before and it was also the first time that my roommates and I had travelled together in Taiwan. We started off from Dayeh University. It was a journey of over 300 kilometres. On the way, we even saw a monument marking the geographic centre of Taiwan!

THE

Along the way we ate many local foods like peaches and ice cream made from goat milk. When we arrived at Wuling we felt very excited. Three other bikers even cheered and claped. Wuling is beautiful and the mountains around us were absolutely magnificent. Upon reflection, we all felt that our trip was pretty worthwhile. ______________________

Frank’s cars Frank Chang 章愷峰, a first year student of Industrial Design 工業設計學系 at DYU, tells us about a car show in Taipei.

Earlier this year, I went to the 2014 Taipei motor show.

The first car that I saw was really stunning. It was a Swedish car made by a company called Spyker. It had a very striking design that looked a lot like Batman’s car and the engine was crazy. Concern about global warming has led many car makers to start making EVs (Electric Vehicles). Brands like BMW, Mitsubishi, and Honda exhibited their latest EV cars. As a Taiwanese, I was most proud of BMW’s i3 since this EV was made in Taiwan. In the photo above: Spyker C8. Spyker is a Swedish company which produces supercars.

In the photo above: Citroen DS5 . Finally Citroen comes to the Taiwanese market again with a new design. A few years ago, the French brand Citroen stopped importing its cars to Taiwan due to poor sales. However, French designed cars, especially Citroen, are back in vogue with Taiwanese car buyers again this year. Therefore, Citroen cars are now available here in Taiwan once again.
