Satellite TV and Internet oo and indeed hoo. November eh? As W I type this, there are only 76 days to Christmas but that number will be vastly

reduced by the time you get to read this. We’re like time travellers in this business, writing stuff now and sending it to the future. Or something. Anyway, I hope you are all keeping well and as giddy as I am to get down to the business of satellite TV and internet. I can’t believe how lucky I am to do this every month. Some people even say to me ‘do you really have to write something every month?’ whilst rolling their eyes and changing the subject. But yes, I do. So buckle up, here it comes...

˙ S WooÉ

As always, please feel free to get in touch if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your requirements. Contact details can be found on the advert. Have a good month. SvTRÉFÉvRH}ÉSÉoo]ÉTV tfhsatellite@gmail.com ORÉ}v]o É ]vR]É]vRÉB]o]vP RÉv}}vÉ}v}(RÉuP]vÉ

Neosat by Nordnet (satellite internet). I thought I’d jot down some thoughts following a couple of installs. Well, the good news is that the speeds seem good. An average of around 90Mbps down was achieved. The Wifi signal from the router seems strong and it has 4 Ethernet ports to allow wired connections if required. Bad bits, well, it’s a bit of a pain to install, especially if by yourself! Unlike satellite internet systems of the past, Neosat does not have a built-in ‘beeper’ at the dish to let you know that you’ve found the signal. Instead, you have to read the reception levels on a screen. Now, in theory, this is good as it can be very precise. In practice, it is bad. Unless you are lucky enough to live in a bungalow, stand on the floor and be able to see your PC from the dish, you need to carry a smartphone, tablet or laptop up the ladder. So, that then makes it hard to adjust the dish without dropping your expensive tech. You are working one handed. Then, if you are out of WiFi range (at the dish), you lose the ability to be able to know the reception levels. The instruction manual states that if you have no WiFi at the dish, you need to have a 2nd person inside, looking at the screen and shouting out the levels to the person at the dish! Really??? This is 2021, right? Yes there are workarounds, like running a long Ethernet cable to a router nearer the dish to give WiFi coverage, but you really shouldn’t need to do that. Whoever designed the system and thought that was a good idea needs to go and have a word with themselves. Oh, and you need fingers that have been hammered flat then attacked with a rolling pin to reach a couple of nuts that hold everything together. Still, the service does seem an improvement on previous systems, so that’s the most important thing I guess. Freesat is not the same as Freeview. Right, moving on… On the subject of Freesat, it would appear that the current recording boxes seem to work better when used with a twin or quad output LNB as opposed to a wideband LNB. This does mean you can’t record as many channels at the same time, but it does mean the box is more likely to work properly. I still don’t like them, but if you want a Freesat recording box, you have no other new option. You may have seen that Sky is rolling out a complete service that doesn’t require a satellite dish. All its services can be provided via the internet. Those of you with a Sky subscription in France fear not. Your service will not change. Not yet anyway. It’ll be a long time before Sky could ever go completely dishless, as parts of the UK are still so poorly served in terms of internet connections, a dish will remain necessary for some time to come. As such, you’ll still be able to get your Sky TV via a dish in France (even though you’re not supposed to!).

November Morning A tingly, misty marvel, blew hither in the night, And now the little peach trees are clasped in frozen light. Upon the apple branches an icy film is caught, With trailing threads of gossamer in pearly patterns wrought. The autumn sun in wonder, is gaily peering through This silvered-tissue network, across the frosty blue. The weather vane is fire tipped, the honeysuckle shows A dazzling icy splendour, and crystal is the rose. Around the eaves are fringes of icicles that seem To seek the summer rainbows with many coloured gleam. Along the walk, the pebbles are each a precious stone, The grass is tasselled hoar frost, the clever jewel sown. Such sparkle, sparkle, sparkle, fills all the frosty air, Oh, can it be that darkness is ever anywhere? Evaleen Stein USA 1863-1923

Incredible Women

˙T}v˙L˙vvÉW]Pu}É

Incredible women who have done incredible things with little or no recognition at the time Ada Lovelace (10 December 1815 – 27 November 1852)

A

ugusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace was the only legitimate child of Lord Byron, although he separated from her mother soon after the birth. Her mother remained bitter and promoted Ada's interest in mathematics and logic in an effort to prevent her from developing her father's perceived insanity. In June 1833, her mathematical talents led her to a meeting with mathematician Charles Babbage, who is known as "the father of computers". Forming a long working association and friendship, Ada worked with Charles Babbage on his “Analytical Engine” being the first to recognise that the envisaged machine had potential well beyond just a calculating machine. Her work in 1843, alongside Babbage, on translating and reviewing an Italian article about the calculating engine included what is widely accepted as the first ever computer programme – more than 100 years before anything resembling a programmable computer existed. Her mix of scientific thinking and artistic views (from her father) seems to have given her an insight never previously seen. She also developed a vision of the capability of computers to go beyond mere calculating or number-crunching which Baggage himself could not see. Ada died of uterine cancer at just 36 years of age. Despite being abandoned by her father she asked to be buried beside him in the Byron vault at Hucknall Torkard church, near Newstead Abbey. Her legacy lives on however as the computer language Ada, created for the United States Department of Defence, was named after Lovelace, and the Military Standard for the language, MIL-STD-1815, was given the number of the year of her birth. Judith Love Cohen (August 16, 1933 – July 25, 2016)

B

orn in Brooklyn, Judith was gifted in mathematics and by the fifth grade her classmates were paying her to do their maths homework. By the time she reached senior school, Cohen later remarked that she was often the only female in her maths lessons. She received a scholarship to Brooklyn College to major in mathematics with a desire to become a teacher, but realized she preferred engineering. After two years at college Judith married and moved to California where she began working as a junior engineer for North American Aviation. She continued her degree by attending USC at night, recalling that she went through both

her Batchelor and Masters programs at USC without ever meeting another female engineering student. Cohen worked as an electrical engineer on the Minuteman missile, the science ground station for the Hubble Space Telescope, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, and the Apollo Space Program. Her work on Apollo included the Abort-Guidance System (AGS) in the Apollo Lunar Module which played a vital role in the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew in 1970. She considered her work on the Apollo program to be the highlight of her career and received the personal thanks of the Apollo 13 astronauts. After her retirement as an engineer, she founded a children's multimedia publishing company, eventually publishing more than 20 titles including a series to encourage very young girls to pursue careers in science and engineering. Cohen had four children, including actor/musician Jack Black. Hedy Lamarr (November 9, 1914 – 19 January 2000)

W

idely considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, Hedy Lamarr (born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) appeared in 30 films perhaps being best remembered for playing Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949).

Born in Vienna, Lamarr was an only child who received lavish attention from her father who spent many hours explaining the inner workings of machines of all kinds. These conversations guided Lamarr’s thinking and at only 5 years of age, she could be found taking apart and reassembling her music box to understand how it worked. She fled to Paris then onto London to escape her controlling husband, and it was here Hedy met the head of MGM studios who promoted her as "the world's most beautiful woman". With this meeting, she secured her ticket to Hollywood where she captivated audiences with her grace, beauty, and accent. In Hollywood, Lamarr was introduced to many socialites including businessman and pilot Howard Hughes. Hughes was among the few who recognised Lamarr's inventiveness. She suggested he change the rather square design of his aeroplanes to a more streamlined shape; he actively supported her inventive "tinkering". While they dated, he put his team of scientists and engineers at her disposal, saying they would do or make anything she asked for. What is less well known is that at the beginning of World War II, Lamarr met composer George Antheil who was already known for his film scores and experimental music compositions but he also shared the same inventive spirit. Together they developed a radio guidance system, using frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, for Allied torpedoes that largely defeated the threat of jamming. This design is still used in the modern day in Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi technologies.

November brings the countdown to Christmas, Bonfire Night, dark evenings and mornings and the need for warm comforting food.

It’s also time to start preparations to take the stress out of December, if you are anything like me there is a list or excel sheet for everything, it’s never too early to start jotting down ideas for presents, food etc – here are a few ideas for Bonfire Night to keep the cold out love.….Donna Serve this comforting classic made with sausages and a simple batter – it’s easy enough that kids can help make it and tastes so good. (KK K@ eK ে2Fেe/ ে/K@ 12 sausages of your choice 1 tbsp sunflower oil

SERVES 4

For the batter 140g plain flour 2 eggs 175ml milk Set oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the sausages in a 20 x 30cm roasting tin with the oil and bake for 15 mins until browned. Meanwhile, make the batter. Whisk the flour with ½ tsp salt and add eggs then add the milk slowly to the mixture, whisking all the time. Leave to stand until the sausages are nice and brown. Remove the sausages from the oven –the fat will be sizzling hot - and pour in the batter mix. Transfer to the top shelf of the oven then cook for 25-30 mins, until risen and golden. Serve with gravy and your favourite vegetables.

Spiked Hot Chocolate

With a little something extra for Mum & Dad Warm together a mix of milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla. Stir in chopped chocolate until smooth. Make it boozy - Stir in bourbon, Frangelico, or Irish cream. Top with marshmallows or a swirl of whipped cream. I go with chocolate vs cocoa every time, with its higher ratio of cocoa butter to cocoa solids, using solid chocolate results in a smoother, creamier texture—perfect for hot chocolate (suggest using a moderately dark 60%, which gives our alcoholic hot chocolate just enough of a grownup taste without any bitterness).

Autumn has well and truly arrived in November, and the first frosts are likely to come too, if they haven’t already. Make the most of any late flowerers such as dahlias and cosmos before the cold weather arrives. There are slimmer pickings in the garden at this time of year, but you can still find flowers to pick for the house, including nerines and schizostylis and chrysanthemums.

Vintage Tearoom &

Bread & Butter Pudding (Om Ali style) A great favourite and easy on the wallet.

25g/1oz butter, plus extra for greasing 8 slices bread (feel free to use stale pastries) 50g/2oz sultanas 50g/2oz chopped pistachios 2 tsp cinnamon powder 350ml/12fl oz full-fat milk 50ml/2fl oz double cream 2 free-range eggs 25g/1oz granulated sugar nutmeg, grated, to taste

Grease a 1 litre pie dish with butter. Cut the crusts off the bread. Spread each slice on one side with butter, then cut into triangles. Arrange a layer of bread, buttered-side up, in the bottom of the dish, then add a layer of sultanas. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon, then repeat the layers of bread and sultanas, sprinkling with cinnamon, until you have used up all of the bread. Finish with a layer of bread, then set aside. Gently warm the milk and cream in a saucepan over a low heat to scalding point. Do not let it boil. Crack the eggs into a bowl, add threequarters of the sugar and lightly whisk until pale. Add the warm milk and cream mixture and stir well, then strain the custard into a bowl. Pour the custard over the prepared bread layers, sprinkle with nutmeg and the remaining sugar and sprinkle on the chopped pistachios and leave to stand for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Place the dish into the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the custard has set and the top is golden brown. Perfection. Guy Fawkes part of provincial English Catholics who were involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Born: April 13, 1570, York Died: January 31, 1606, Westminster, London

ENJOYING FRENCH

˙H}`NÉÉ

Jean d’Aillon J

ean d’Aillon is a prolific French author whose energy astounds me. He has written six series of historical novels, of which I have tackled three. His Wikipedia page contains a lot of information about his books and the man himself.

“ ... immediately becomes involved in a mystery which he eventually helps to solve ...”

I think that what typifies the books is d’Aillon’s taking true historical mystery situations and, with a simple addition of some extra characters, managing to create a really believable investigation providing a realistic solution to the said mystery. For example, the first book of the Fronsac series, Les Ferrets de la Reine, concerns the plot to discredit Anne of Austria (queen to Louis XIII) using a stolen piece of jewellery. This same plot can be found in the Three Musketeers, by Alexander Dumas. The “Louis Fronsac” series Louis Fronsac was the younger son of a Paris notary, who trained and became a notary himself. During his early years at school, together with friend Gaston de Tilly, he resolved two complicated situations . In the next book, Fronsac is a young man, who, despite his “lowly” position in society, is introduced into a salon with a variegated circle of intellectuals and nobles and immediately becomes involved in a mystery which he eventually helps to solve. At the same time, he makes life-long friends and enemies and is introduced to the woman whom he eventually marries and who is the enabler for his entry into the nobility. Louis as a person becomes a real person in one’s mind – he is honest and moral, he cares for his friends and dependants, he is a man of action on an intellectual level but does not avoid danger when it comes his way.

I can only say that you get used to it. The first two books in the series cover the adventures of a young Louis Fronsac, and the first book written is probably the best one to begin with: Le Mystère de la chambre bleue

The “Guilhem d’Ussel” series Guilhem d’Ussel is another kettle of fish – his period of history (1187 to 1211 in the published books) bridges that of Richard Lionheart. The series (many books) begins in 1187, when Guilhem as an orphan flees the relative security of the tanner’s yard where he was born and worked. He falls in with a troupe of travelling entertainers and learns not only to use knives as a weapon, but also the art of a troubadour. After a while, he leaves them and is forcibly integrated in a band of mercenaries, where he is involved in the unthinkable brutalities of the age. Here he is eventually knighted and becomes a Chevalier. Subsequently, he has many adventures involving various historical figures and incidences, during which time his character gradually changes and he becomes a strong, upright leader, used to employing the violence of his age, whilst at the same time being a troubadour, playing and singing at the ducal courts that he visits. I stranded before the end of this series in the middle of the book involving the siege of Béziers, in 1209, simply because I did not want to read of the terrible happenings there. I will at some time take up the series again and read it through to its finish.

The series has not been written in the order of events, and it looks as if from time to time d’Aillon has written fill-in books to complete the life of Fronsac, from the age of 12 or so, in 1624, through the last investigations, in 1670. I shall not tell you how many books the series comprises, as it might put you off starting. However in reading these books, one gets a good introduction to French history and society of the times, as well as a well-written and fast-moving mystery.

As a matter of curiosity, I tried to find Guilhem d’Ussel’s château fort on the IGN maps and found that it was real, albeit in ruins. I was also able to find some of the geographic features, such as caves and water sources and cliff sides, mentioned in a couple of the books. The author’s descriptions of the streets of Paris and other towns, the street names and the names of houses and other buildings is already an indication of his concern with the accuracy of the details, something that is confirmed by the bibliography at the end of some of the books in the three series that I have read.

A word of warning: there are many characters, and the nobility can be referred to by their position in society, i.e. the Duke of Such-and-Such, or by their function, or by their family name.

The first book in the series is De taille et d'estoc, and it is a good starting place because it is less complex than some of the others. ænTRÉDɢrSÉM}vRo˙UN}ÉuÉ

The “Edward Holmes” series This series I covered last month. Its historical period falls between that of Louis Fronsac and the relative stability of 17 century France and the turmoil of the period of Eleanor of Aquitaine in the Guilhem d’Ussel series. That is not to say it was peaceful in those times, far from it – warring factions The Armagnacs and the Bourguignons, an English claimant to the throne and an only partly codified legal system all made for uncertainties in the lives of the humble and noble alike.

rich panorama of French history whilst involving historical and imaginary characters in mysteries and situations of the times, resulting in entertaining and instructive reading for the modern reader. Here again, the first book in the series, Une étude en écarlate, is the best starting point, with Edward Holmes in Paris coming to terms with his elder brother’s death during the battle of Baugé. The other three series are relatively short ones, and someday I will start on them, out of curiosity if nothing else.

However, taking the three series together, I consider that Jean d’Aillon has presented his readers with a
