Each year, during the last week of January, our community comes together at the “State of the School” event to reflect on the progress we have made through our Strategic Plan. This gathering offers us a moment to celebrate milestones, acknowledge challenges, and look ahead with excitement and determination

A Vision of Life

A significant highlight this year has been the addition of the Peter & Jennifer Sleiman Building This newest building has become a dynamic hub for our students, team members, families, and visitors. With six dedicated classrooms serving our upper school daily and hosting over 40 events and exhibitions this school year alone, the building has indeed brought our vision of connection, collaboration, and inspiration to life

But our school is more than its buildings It is a thriving community where aspirations take root, and potential is realized Every classroom, event, and initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering a nurturing environment that encourages students to think critically, act compassionately, and confidently pursue their dreams

The Discovery School Strategic Plan Update

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our board of trustees and volunteers, who have met in committees this school year and played an active role in shaping the future of our school.

We hired a Curriculum Coordinator, Ms Laura Bayer, to shape the curricular alignment further

We established and met as a High School Exploratory Committee We had first conversations with a consultant group who can advise us in taking the next steps While it’s all about enrollment numbers in the upcoming years, we are planning on engaging with them during the 2025-26 school year Student Experience

We offer additional extracurricular programs now, including Junior Varsity and Varsity League for Basketball, Flag Football, and Soccer

We established more, and enhanced field trips for students (MS went to Costa Rica last school year; UE has an extended overnight field trip this Spring)

We completed and moved into the Peter & Jennifer Sleiman Building It is used as classroom space for our Upper School students and our student assemblies (Dolphin Day!), exhibitions, guest speakers and events, and PTO/parent gatherings

We opened our very first dedicated Art Room and a brand-new Library Both Enrichment Spaces are housed in Building 5, the I D R E A M Building

This summer, we will add perimeter fencing and electric gates with a new check-in procedure for additional security.

We are in the next phase of building and growing, looking at enhancing the field space and the playground and re-opening our Ecopath Our long-term dream is to build a gymnasium for indoor sports and offer athletic, competitive games at the Discovery campus

I am Laura Bayer and while born and raised in Kansas, I ended up on the other side of the world in Brazil for most of my adult life I began as an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher but quickly found a role in an International IB school. I worked in a range of roles, from preschool teacher to learning support, before moving into leadership Brazil was a wonderful place to raise my four children; we made frequent trips to the beach and enjoyed a culture that cherishes a vibrant life and family I was then drawn back to the US to be closer to my older two children who had settled in the South and quickly fell in love with Jacksonville.

WhatinspiresyoutoserveastheCurriculumDirectorofTheDiscoverySchool?

Working with curriculum has to be the most creative and exciting role in school It allows me to stay grounded in what is real and current while envisioning what is possible When I was little, I always dreamed of being a writer, and in a way, this role fulfills that dream. I have the opportunity to help groups of educators narrate our shared experiences and imagine and shape what we do tomorrow

Where do you see the school in the next 5-10 years?

When thinking about school options, a common myth in education suggests that rigor and joy cannot coexist but The Discovery School proves otherwise Both the Montessori and IB programs tap into curiosity, passion and student agency to drive learning to new levels of excellence Our teachers are empowered to reflect, innovate and adapt and therefore the school is dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of students and society. I believe more schools will look to The Discovery School for leadership in creating an educational experience that is both challenging and joyful one that is not weighed down by outdated constraints but instead thrives on innovation and possibility

If you could swap jobs with one staff member, what would you want to try and why?

If I could swap jobs with one staff member, I would swap with Ms Stacy I have always loved the library, both from a love of literature and an interest in new ways to research and access information. Digital citizenship is one of the most important areas of learning right now.

If you had unlimited resources, what is the one thing you would do for our school community?

In my view, the most limited resource in education is time If I had unlimited time, our teachers would have the space to bring their full creativity to life Together, we could design transformative learning experiences without the pressures of deadlines.

How do you define our school community when you talk to others?

Fun. Believe me, students work hard and are challenged, but there is laughter all over the place Teachers love what they do and the kids feel it There is a lot of shared passion for learning

THEATER PRODUCTION: ANNIE JR.

The school’s production of Annie Jr took center stage this past December, offering an impressive display of student talent and dedication. The show, a youth-friendly version of the classic Broadway musical, featured a cast of young performers who brought the story of Annie and her journey to find a family to life in a charming way.

A Talented Cast

The cast was led by Ashley Christamtsis, who played the role of Annie Ashley's performance was full of energy, and her rendition of “Tomorrow” perfectly captured the hope and optimism at the core of the character. The supporting cast also made a strong impression, with Fletcher Wright portraying Oliver Warbucks, Raelyn Waldron as Miss Hannigan, and Olivia Elli Borghetti as Grace Farrell. Each actor brought a unique style to their roles, infusing the performance with vibrancy and charm

The ensemble of orphans played by Cosette Ashby, Elin Roth, Stella Brzezicka, Ruby Christamtsis, and Emerson Libman added humor and depth to the show, providing a lively counterpoint to the main characters Their strong performances helped to create a well-rounded and dynamic production

Behind the Scenes Effort

While the actors shone on stage, the dedication of teachers and staff was essential to the success of Annie Jr. Director Ms Jasmine and choreographer Ms RaeAnne spent months guiding students through rehearsals, bringing characters to life Ms Maggie led the prop and set team, whose meticulous work transported audiences to 1930s New York City

Confidence Through Theater

For the students, the production offered more than just stage time Theater fosters confidence, teamwork, and essential life skills like public speaking and time management For many, it was the beginning of a lasting passion for the arts

In September, the students were surprised by a visit from Izzy Pike, a young Broadway actress who starred as one of the orphans in Annie She explained the inner workings and commitment of starring in a Broadway show Followed up with acting tips and ways to reduce nerves before going on stage This inspirational visit helped set the tone for the young actors with their own production

Behind the stage was filled with energy and questions for Ms RaeAnne before the performance

FUTURECONSERVATIONISTS: EXPLORINGTHEOCEANATMARINELAB

Every other year, our middle school students have the opportunity to visit the Florida Keys for an educational trip to the Marine Lab. Led by marine biologists and educators, students learn about the marine ecosystems in the Keys, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world This trip helps students understand the importance of protecting the ocean and leaves them with a deeper appreciation for the marine life found beneath the surface.

A Memorable Experience

The middle school trip to the Marine Lab is more than just a fun outing it’s an opportunity for students to explore marine science, develop a sense of environmental responsibility, and create lasting memories From snorkeling to scientific experiments, students gain valuable insights into the challenges facing the ocean and why it’s important to protect it This experience can inspire students to continue learning about marine science and conservation, helping them become advocates for the health of our planet’s oceans

Immersive Learning in Paradise

As soon as students arrive in the Florida Keys, they are surrounded by the area's natural beauty The Marine Lab, run by the Florida Institute of Technology, serves as a research facility and a classroom where visitors can learn about marine science firsthand.

One of the highlights of the trip is the snorkeling experience Students get the chance to explore coral reefs and observe colorful fish, rays, and maybe even a sea turtle

This hands-on experience helps them connect with the underwater world meaningfully Students were inspired by the lab’s dedication to sustainability and its efforts to restore damaged coral reefs through innovative techniques like coral propagation and restoration. They learned about ongoing conservation projects, including efforts to combat the effects of ocean acidification and rising sea temperatures

Students also participate in activities like collecting water samples and conducting experiments, helping them learn how marine researchers study ocean health. They explore water quality, measure salinity, and look at the effects of pollution These activities are designed to suit their grade level, providing basic and more advanced knowledge of marine science

Building Connections and Responsibility

The trip gives students a chance to bond and work together as a team Whether studying mangroves, participating in fieldwork, or discussing marine life, students share experiences while serving as ambassadors for The Discovery School

The Marine Lab trip also encourages students to be more mindful of the environment They learn about the importance of protecting oceans and marine life, and many students return home with a stronger sense of responsibility for the planet

The Florida Keys provide a beautiful setting for this learning but also serve as a reminder of how important it is to take care of the oceans

By the end of the trip, it was clear that the lessons learned weren’t just about marine biology; they were about becoming stewards of the oceans, understanding their vulnerability, and advocating for their protection. Through workshops and discussions on topics like coral bleaching, plastic pollution, and overfishing, students better understand the impact humans have on the ocean and its ecosystems They are encouraged to think about how they can help protect marine life in the future.

The students participated in a swim test and gear check before taking the boat out for their field studies to further examine coral reef ecology and mangrove habitats
After their excursions, the students would gather in the lab for lively discussions about invertebrate diversity

INSPIRING THE ARTS

Since her tenure at The Discovery School, Ms. Ana, our Art Specialist, has continued to enhance our students’ talents through showcases on and off campus.

As the 2023-2024 school year came to a close, seventeen students left campus with blank art canvases in hand, their faces brimming with excitement Over the summer vacation they began sketching ideas This was the beginning of a creative journey that would lead to a Fall art exhibition at the First Coast Cultural Center in Ponte Vedra Beach Students at The Discovery School share a passion for nature and the environment, so it was fitting to title the exhibition "Nature's Palette "

Throughout the process, students had the option to work from home or during class time Some students chose to work independently at home, updating Ms Ana regularly with photos of their progress and reaching out for advice It was wonderful to see their commitment and initiative in managing their projects remotely Other students worked during art class and caught up on their regular class assignments

Ms. Andreina’s assistance was invaluable in making this exhibition a success She generously gave her time on a Saturday to help wire the backs of all the canvases, ensuring that each piece was ready for display the exhibition opening. Mr. Adam added a special touch by enhancing the atmosphere with his beautiful guitar performance

NATURE’S PALETTE

From the textures of a delicate ladybug, painted by a first grader, to the bold contrast of a praying mantis set against a stark background, created by an eighth grader, it was clear just how dedicated and enthusiastic our students were to this exhibition Thank you to all the parents and special guests that showed their support by joining us during this special day. The exhibition was a true testament to their hard work, creativity, and dedication, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Building the Next Generation: The Future of Student Sports at Discovery

Upon entering the Discovery School as the Athletic Director last year, growing the Dolphin program was at the top of my to-do list. We had 3 total teams throughout the year and were not consistently competitive in any of the three sports Thus far, we have added a JV basketball and JV co-ed flag football team to bring our total to 5 teams.

Basketball

Our Basketball season this fall was extremely successful Our JV team won their first game ever as a program, and our Varsity team set multiple school records, including a school record 5 wins Our athletes grew a ton throughout the season and put themselves in a position where they were competitive in every game Even in the losses, our students competed at a very high level and have set the bar for what should hopefully now be the standard for years to come.

Football

ng on from Basketball, we were also able to offer a -ed flag football team for the first time ever We up all 12 spots in less than 24 hours and had a ng list This shows me that our students want to be t of what we do as an athletic department. The JV secured their first victory as a program with a 21-7 over Jacksonville Country Day School and got r and better as the season went on. It was really stic to watch both programs compete week after Discovery flag football is no longer considered an win across our league, and that alone is a huge mplishment.

The AC definitely respects our program more and with each game that is played, and the students eally starting to buy into our goals and where we to be as a program. THE EVOLUTION OF EDUCATION:

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A CHANGING WORLD

When adults of a certain age reminisce about our educational experiences, we may recall: regurgitating memorized names, dates, facts, and figures on paper-and-pencil tests, watching the slow ticking of the clock while doodling in textbooks during teacher-centered lectures, or reading classic novels only to be rewarded with having to answer countless comprehension questions that hardly inspired a love of reading

Thankfully, times have changed Until 1900, human knowledge doubled approximately every century Today, advances in technology and information access cause knowledge to double about every twelve hours (Gallagher 5) As a result, the traditional model of subjecting students to rote memorization and incessant testing is inadequate Contemporary schools must prioritize critical thinking, communication, problemsolving, and collaboration while ensuring students grasp the “big picture” painted by a transdisciplinary curriculum The Discovery School is ahead of the curve, teaching students how to think rather than what to think

Developing critical thinking in a digital world

Twenty-first-century students must employ higherlevel thinking skills, such as analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information, to discern fact from fiction in today’s digital world. The rise of misinformation via social media and the internet demands that students learn to think critically from an early age While today’s students have unprecedented access to information, it is not always reliable. As a result, determining a source ’ s credibility is not just an important skill but an essential one Throughout their Discovery journey, students learn to evaluate sources, analyze bias, and synthesize knowledge from multiple perspectives According to Ms Stacy, Discovery’s Librarian and Webmaster, “The days of evaluating the reliability and credibility of a source simply by looking at the website address have passed Today, students must take a more nuanced approach, analyzing sources independently by considering the author's expertise, the publication’s reputation, and potential biases in content.

Providing students with safe opportunities to assess reliability and credibility equips them with the skills to critically evaluate information in an increasingly complex media landscape ” A Discovery education equips students with the higher-order thinking skills that will enable them to become independent, original thinkers

Communicating with clarity and confidence

For others to value their thoughts, however, students must learn to communicate them effectively Whether interviewing for high school admission, emailing their teachers, or presenting in front of the class, today’s students must articulate their ideas clearly and confidently.

Middle School students at Discovery hone their communication skills not only in Writers’ Workshop but in all their classes For example, math students share their reasoning, explain strategies, and discuss differing perspectives on problem-solving, all of which deepen their conceptual understanding Algebra teacher Deborah Robbins believes that “Concrete experiences using manipulatives and hands-on activities foster rich mathematical discourse, which helps students articulate their thinking.

Meaningful discussions empower students to refine their understanding, allowing them to apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems ” Conveying ideas coherently and concisely in speech and writing across disciplines is key to success in high school and beyond

Fostering collaboration and problem-solving

In the modern world, problems are not solved in isolation Today’s workplace increasingly values teamwork, and schools must prepare students for this reality Collaborative learning fosters creativity, develops interpersonal skills, and encourages adaptability. At Discovery, student-led discussions in Upper School teach students to find their voice as they pose meaningful questions and consider differing perspectives As Middle School English Teacher Ms Ingrid observes, “Complex ideas often come to light only after the group engages in thoughtful, open dialogue and navigates disagreements respectfully We encourage students to ask questions they have no idea how to answer!”

Not only do these discussions encourage academic risk-taking, but they also allow students to learn from each other. Likewise, in Upper Elementary students work in teams to develop problem-solving skills through hands-on research projects with practical applications, which they showcase during their annual International Baccalaureate (IB) Exhibition.

In UE Teacher Ms Emily ‘ s view, "Watching students bounce ideas off each other, challenge one another, and grow together that’s when you see real learning happen." These experiences mirror real-world challenges where collaboration is an essential ingredient for success

Embracing Transdisciplinary Learning

Similarly, while silos are necessary on farms, they are not effective in schools. The old-school approach of teaching subjects in isolation is obsolete Today’s students must see the “big picture” by understanding how disciplines overlap For example, middle school students taking the Big History Project (BHP) course make connections between the past, present, and future by understanding the interplay of science and history According to BHP teacher Mr Will, “Lively discussions and heated debates require students to think critically about sources they read or videos they watch as they investigate topics and grasp concepts that bridge disciplines rather than simply memorize facts ” Likewise, the IB program, which focuses on transdisciplinary learning, ensures Discovery’s elementary students are exposed to humanities, science, mathematics, and the arts within a framework that nurtures curiosity and fosters self-directed learning.

Ms Lauren, Discovery’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator, states, “The spirit of inquiry is at the center of the IB program. When students have an inquisitive mindset toward the world around them, they seek knowledge, imagine solutions, and explore what could be Our goal is for students to foster a love of learning and the skills to engage confidently with the world around them ” Thanks to Discovery’s strong cross-curricular foundation, students uncover connections between disciplines and approach problems from different angles, making learning more engaging and relevant

Preparing Students for a Dynamic Future

The Discovery School is meeting the demands of today’s rapidly changing world Our students receive the gift of a student-centered education that fosters a culture of curiosity. By prioritizing higher-order thinking skills, communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and transdisciplinary learning, a Discovery education empowers students to navigate an uncertain world and become catalysts for change in their communities. The future belongs to those who can learn, adapt, and think independently precisely the skills a Discovery student possesses

MONTESSORI & IB: INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION OF THINKERS

The Montessori method and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, while distinct in their approaches, share several fundamental principles and philosophies that create a natural connection between the two educational frameworks Here are some key ways in which Montessori connects to the IB:

1) CHILD-CENTERED LEARNING

Both Montessori and IB emphasize a child-centered approach to education. A Milestone In Discovery’s Growth:

Phase One Capital Campaign Success

The Discovery School community reached an exciting and monumental milestone Phase One of our "Ready Set Grow" Capital Campaign has been completed! With the incredible support of our families, alumni, faculty, and friends, we have made tremendous progress toward enhancing our campus and educational offerings. The addition of six new classrooms, a dedicated art space, an expanded library, and a state-of-the-art community center has transformed our campus and created new opportunities for our students to thrive

The new Peter & Jennifer Sleiman Building opened its doors to students this academic year, enriching the learning experiences for our 5th to 8th graders and providing much-needed space for our community to gather, collaborate, and celebrate. This first phase marks a significant step in realizing our comprehensive campus master plan, positioning Discovery as a holistic, inquiry-based education leader.

Phase Two: A New Chapter Awaits

As we celebrate the success of Phase One, it's time to harness that energy and push forward into the next stage of our vision Phase Two

We are committed to designing our Outdoor Athletics & Activities Complex for all kinds of activities, including but not limited to our league sports like basketball, soccer, and flag football Our students are more than just scholars they are athletes, collaborators, and leaders and this new complex will help nurture the whole child by supporting their physical, social, and emotional growth. The Discovery School is committed to fostering well-rounded individuals who excel not only in the classroom but also on the field By creating spaces that encourage teamwork, resilience, and healthy competition, we are laying the foundation for future generations of students to grow into confident, capable leaders

As shared in our annual State of the School video, we have re-developed our plans for this phase. While this phase will bring to life a multi-purpose athletic complex, it will include the development of the land (Phase 2a) to install a turf field (Phase 2b) and new playground equipment (Phase 2c) Finally, our beloved Eco-Discovery Path will be re-opened during this phase (Phase 2d)

Phase 3

As we prepare to embark on Phase Two, we need the continued support of our community. The journey to realizing our full vision for The Discovery School is far from over, and your contributions make all the difference Each dollar raised brings us closer to completing the Outdoor Athletic & Activities Complex Upon completing Phase 2, we look forward to embarking on Phase 3, building a gymnasium. This facility will not only serve our students but also bring our entire community together for games, events, and celebrations

The Discovery Fund is the number one fundraising priority at Discovery. Your generosity supports what matters to you at our school: talented teachers, small classes, enriching arts and athletics, library and teaching resources, technology, safety, and much more Our goals are to improve the dollars raised every year, increase the number of 1990 Society of Sustainers, a group of donors who commit to giving $1,990 or more annually, and achieve 100% participation We humbly ask the community to rally behind this allimportant initiative and make a personally significant gift that aligns with our goals.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: PETER & JENNIFER SLEIMAN

Peter and Jennifer Sleiman have a long-standing relationship with The Discovery School.

Jennifer first served on the Board of Trustees from 2014-2015 During her tenure on the board, our community underwent some exciting changes, including our rebranding as The Discovery School. We were thrilled when Peter and Jennifer’s daughter joined our community as a Toddler in 2021

Our newest campus building, The Peter & Jennifer Sleiman Building, was made possible by a transformative gift from Peter and Jennifer. This gift is a testament to their dedication to furthering the School’s mission and serving the local beach community This newest landmark has provided a hub for our Upper School community and a large gathering space for student and parent education and campus events.

Professionally, Peter and Jennifer have developed, owned, managed, and operated a variety of commercial projects for nearly 20 years Their passion for growth in the Jacksonville and Beaches communities is evident in all of their professional and philanthropic endeavors The Sleimans’ passion and belief in the mission and vision of The Discovery School and their expertise helped bring the dream of expansion and meeting our students’ needs a reality

We are grateful for Peter and Jennifer’s generosity and belief in our school community. Their partnership will continue to help Discovery reach its future goals and fullest potential

Middle School Student Work

During Trimester 2, middle school Writers’ Workshop students composed odes using Pablo Neruda’s “Ode to My Socks” as a mentor text. Using creative diction, syntax, and punctuation, these students celebrated humble classroom necessities, causing the reader to see them in a different light

“Ode to Sticky Notes”

Oh, Sticky Notes, your syrupy sides stick to my mirror, “Feed the cat,” you purr in my ear, the idea becoming clearer. As I inscribe upon you, my memory grows sharp, Your slick surface clings to my graphite like a tightly wrapped scarf

Your minuscule size is handily compact, Yet your bright vivid colors from my goals don’t detract But, alas, when you inevitably melt from my sight, I recall each of my tasks with no feeling of blight.

But oh, Sticky Notes, your flaws soon emerge

You clutter my desk in an unorganized surge

You lose your stick and fall to the floor, A pile of memos so easily ignored. You fade and you peel, a sad, wrinkled sight, Leaving me to ponder what once felt so right

Edges curl, colors fade with each passing day, But while you stick, you are loyal and never lead me astray Y hi i h t I not forget, of regret.

Oh, Red Expo Marker,

You look good enough to eat!

Although a writing utensil, You could be a tasty treat. Your chiseled tip and low odor, I could never live without, So it was really no surprise When you slipped into my mouth

Once my tongue tasted Your vivid, vibrant edge, I already knew I’d fallen far off the ledge Your tempting taste and the feel Of your tip soft on my skin, Made my neck hair stand up As I tried hard not to grin.

You have thousands of uses From writing to art Your ink spills out Like a fast beating heart. Your blood, dark and red Like your squishy interior, Made me feel giddy –Made me think I was superior

But eventually the time came, And my teacher did shout! She took you away –I had to spit you right out While this made me feel Quite sad and blue, Oh, dear Red Expo Marker, How I still love you!

Oh, dear ergonomic desk chair, you see, You are the highlight of a student’s whole day Whether sunny, cloudy, or misty-foggy, It is you students are thankful for –Despite what we say

For we do not fall once we relax into your flat, cushioned seat You provide hours of wheel-moving, back-popping, toe-tapping relief

Born in Egypt around 3100 BC, made of fragile cloth and carved wood –some might say rather sloppy –You were indeed squalid, inelegant, As seen in the evidence

However, you were useful and ripe for improvement. Now look at the new you! Your sleek, complex design –There is certainly more to you than what meets the eye

But I must confess, despite the much-needed rest When I sit for too long, I begin to feel wronged Ooch Ouch my back needs a stretch! I must escape your confines before I become an old wretch.
