FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The culture at our school and the unique Montessori and the International Baccalaureate frameworks, as well as our Middle School capstone program will finally be matched by a finalized picture of our campus This state-of-the-art facility has been designed to provide our students with a dynamic and innovative learning environment

The curricular space has been carefully planned to facilitate a wide range of learning experiences

Dear Discovery Community,

This year, I would like to celebrate Discovery’s history and growth! Did you know that within the past 33 years, we grew to almost 330 students?

I am thrilled to share with you the exciting news about a new building that is set to open its doors to our school community this summer, along with the addition of further enrichment space for all But it’s not just a new building It’s a carefully crafted ecosystem that supports our mission of “opening our hearts and minds”. With additional and flexible classrooms for grades 5-8 and a large community space, we are further designing and shaping the holistic approach to education that Discovery is all about

Enrollment at Discovery has increased for many years as more and more families have been seeking a place away from a traditional classroom setting

From flexible classrooms that can be adapted to different teaching and learning styles and group sizes to specialized areas for hands-on learning, our new building is poised to enhance the educational opportunities available to our students

In addition to serving as a hub for academic growth, the new building will also be a place for our school to connect with the broader community We are excited for campus-wide gatherings and assemblies, showcasing curriculum in action, and celebrating successes together

I am confident that the addition of the new rooms and a community space will inspire creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among our students, and I look forward to witnessing the incredible learning that will take place within its walls and beyond

Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this exciting new chapter for our school

Sincerely,

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Discovery Community,

What a busy, exciting, and groundbreaking year it has been across campus; I cannot thank you all enough for your support and commitment to the Discovery School I truly feel that we showed up, and that we embodied our mission “We open our minds and hearts so that we can discover the knowledge and ideals that make a better world” to its fullest potential. Guided by this mission, we have strived to innovate, expand, and better serve our community with a holistic approach to education over the years

We engaged the entire community to refine and restate our strategic plan for the next five years We broke ground on a new building that will serve as a hub for academic growth and campus-wide celebrations. We kicked off our “Ready. Set Grow.” capital campaign to fund the new building. We celebrated a magical artistic performance of The Lion King Jr at the Lazzara Theatre We celebrated wins from multiple Discovery Dolphin team sports, and in May, we will mark a key milestone in our school’s history: the five-year anniversary celebration of our middle school program!

As we celebrate these achievements, I am filled with gratitude for the faculty, administration, and each member of the Board of Trustees Your tireless efforts, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to The Discovery School have been the driving force behind our success Thank you!

“Life’s a journey, not a destination...” (some of you may recognize that lyric), and I look forward to continuing this journey together as we embark on new endeavors and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead With your kindness, support, and generosity, I am confident that the future holds even greater promise for our institution and the students we serve

Thank you!

Strategic Plan

The Discovery School Board of Trustees unveiled the strategic plan for the next five years at our January State of the School event. Rooted in a commitment to personalized learning, the plan embraces the diversity of student strengths and interests, fostering an environment where each individual can thrive By promoting inquiry-based learning, the school aims to empower students to become active participants in their educational journey, equipped with the skills and mindset necessary to navigate an ever-changing world.

At the strategic plan's core lies a dedication to holistic education, emphasizing academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and global citizenship. The Discovery School seeks to cultivate well-rounded individuals prepared to make meaningful contributions to society through transdisciplinary curriculum design and experiential learning opportunities Moreover, the plan prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, striving to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported.

As The Discovery School embarks on the implementation of its next strategic plan, it does so with a sense of purpose and optimism, guided by a vision from our community and a commitment to student success. With a focus on ensuring Discovery is set up for success, the school is poised to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers, shaping a brighter future for all

Capital Campaign

At The Discovery School, our teachers never lose sight of the fact that the student sitting before them might one day discover a general vaccine for cancer, dance at the Met, capture a World Cup, or unite a community through public service. Each and every day, we encourage creativity, independent thinking, empathy, and problem-solving – the very tools our students will need to live a full, rich life – and perhaps make powerful, positive changes in the lives of others as they follow their own path

This environment helps shape their confidence and competence through an overarching belief that our students should be able and ready to change the world We believe that childhood is sacred, not to mention adventurous, creative, curious, imaginative, innocent, playful, and filled with wonder Through independent learning, collaboration, and focus, we empower our students to ask big questions and see the world in a new way We know that there is great value in not only being resourceful but reflective, self-aware but selfless, confident but kind, qualities that motivate our students to become their best selves. Our focus is not just to prepare these bright young minds for the future but, more importantly, to enable our students to create it and leave their own unique and irreplaceable mark on the world.

For the past several years, the Board of Trustees and Faculty/Staff have been working together to manage the demands of a growing student population within the limited footprint of the existing campus This strong demand and commitment to our mission has led the Board to embark on a thoughtful strategic planning process that has culminated in a facilities design that includes key components to meet existing and future needs for growth by realizing the full comprehensive Master Plan of the campus.

Comprehensive Master Plan

We celebrated our official groundbreaking of the construction of Building 6 on November 7 2023

Building 6 is set to open for the start of the 2024-2025 school year

What Happens Next?

Our campus is a buzz with the construction of Building 6 The completion of Building 6 is an important start to the completion of the campus Master Plan Once complete our Upper Elementary and Middle School Programs will move out of the I D R E A M building into their new classrooms.

WhatinspiresyoutobeamemberoftheDiscoveryfaculty?

So many things! The parent/family community is extraordinary! The parents’ and caregivers’ trust in me has always felt like an honor, and caring for their children has always felt like a privilege.

My colleagues are strong believers in what they do, and they do it well There is no giving up around here Challenges are welcome, and hard work and rising to the occasion are the norm These are essentials for successful teachers But it is the children who have kept me coming back for 30 years Is there any other job that brings with it a brand new group of ready-to-learn, enthusiastic little humans during the phase of life when learning is natural and thrilling?

If you could swap jobs with one staff member, what would you want to try and why?

The Toddler Program is exactly right for me! However, after giving some thought to your question, I think it would be interesting to swap jobs with any staff member to experience another perspective; but I promise you my heart is with the Toddler Program!

06

Where do you see the school in the next 5-10 years?

Let’s continue to prepare our students for today’s (and tomorrow’s) world Kindness, peacefulness, open-mindedness, empathy, flexibility, generosity, forgiveness, acceptance, resourcefulness, perseverance, and hard work are just some of the things we embody and teach beginning at the Toddler level!. If we succeed at offering our students the tools that will enable them to develop, access, and utilize these attributes, the Discovery School will have a positive impact for the next 5-10 years and beyond

If you had unlimited resources, what is the one thing you would do for our school community?

Loaded question! So I am going to go with: Provide a never-ending supply of coffee, cream, and snacks in the staff kitchen

07

How do you define our school community when you talk to others?

I have been working on my elevator speech for 30 years and I am still unable to concisely put into words what happens here. I think one has to see it to believe it, to feel it. And I think, to this day, even with Discovery’s growth, nearly every visitor feels the way I did when I first stepped in the door: Welcome and home

Using only one word, how would you describe The Discovery School?

STUDENT EXPERIENCE THEATER CLUB

It’s Showtime!

Over the last year, Discovery has added the magic of a theater program to the Afterschool Adventure offerings. Under the direction of Ms. Jasmine Ramos, Mr. Adam Rohrer, and Ms. Maggie Venn, students have experienced the joy of musical theater and set design From practicing choreography, preparing for auditions, and displaying dedication, students have performed both Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr and The Lion King Jr.

Our dedicated students worked hard rehearsing and perfecting their lines, choreography, and harmonies to ensure a truly magical performance From our talented actors to our creative set designers and technical crew, every production member poured their heart and soul into making Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr and The Lion King Jr a roaring success

Our spring performance of The Little Mermaid Jr. took place at a local event space, and we quickly realized we needed to set our sights on a larger venue for our fall performance. The Lion King Jr. came to life at the UNF Lazarra Theater in December, showcasing the incredible talents of our students and celebrating the beauty of African culture

Last spring, the stage came alive with enchantment as Discovery's Theater Club proudly presented its inaugural production of Disney's timeless classic, The Little Mermaid Jr. Under the direction of Ms Jasmine and fueled by the passion of budding talents, the cast of The Little Mermaid Jr. delivered captivating performances that truly brought the beloved characters to life The magic of the underwater kingdom was recreated with our props team led by Ms Maggie Venn

As the curtain closed on this magical journey, it marked not only the success of an inaugural production but also the beginning of a new chapter in the legacy of Discovery's Theater Club.

CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF PROGRESS

'The Evolution of The Discovery School’s Middle School Program

“I just wish I could go back to middle school” said no adult ever Adolescence is a tumultuous time Middle school students occupy a unique developmental space in that they are no longer children but not yet adults (just don't call them “tweens”!) Five years ago, The Discovery School embarked on a mission to celebrate middle-school students by supporting them through the rapid physical, cognitive, and emotional changes that accompany adolescence, encouraging them to recognize their boundless potential, and laying a firm foundation for their future success and well-being. Today, we proudly observe the Middle School program ’ s fifth anniversary while looking ahead to its exciting future.

Over a decade ago, Discovery began carving its niche in the Jacksonville community by offering a vision of education that focused on the whole child Building on the solid Montessori foundation established in the Toddler and Primary programs and the inquiry-driven focus of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in Elementary, the Board of Trustees envisioned a capstone experience for Discovery students that prepared them to meet the demands of both public and independent high schools while adhering to its vision of instilling students with the values of knowledge, creativity, independent thinking, and mutual respect After years of dreaming, planning, and consulting with a variety of constituencies, the decision was made to move forward with the addition of seventh and eighth grades in 2019 A dynamic middle school team was then hired to bring the Board’s vision to life

Dolphin Dispatch | Page 14

From its inception, Discovery’s Middle School program has continued the school’s vision of holistic education that goes beyond traditional academic excellence When veteran middle school teachers Heather Oulton Rousseau and Will Smith were hired in May of 2019, the Middle School program did not exist by the opening of school in August of that year, the framework and curricula were in place, and a new classroom was ready to welcome students Six intrepid families enrolled their children in the fledgling program, and Discovery’s Middle School was off and running! The program has grown each subsequent year, and today it boasts a total of twenty-eight seventh and eighth-grade students divided into two classes The Middle School is led by a dedicated team of tireless educators who genuinely love working with this age group and are energized by the challenge of rewriting the stereotypical middle school experience

To achieve that goal, Discovery’s student-centered program prioritizes individual growth and emphasizes process over product Central to the success of the Middle School program is its relevant, engaging curriculum, which prepares students to be assessment-capable rather than assessmentdriven Projects and presentations, student-led discussions, cross-curricular connections, and realworld problem-solving are cornerstones of Discovery’s Middle School experience, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration Teachers serve as mentors, guiding students in setting personalized learning goals and providing individualized feedback and continuous support.

Teachers recognize, however, that students do not transition to middle school fully equipped with the necessary soft skills to succeed in high school Therefore, students are exposed to a variety of time management strategies, study skills, and organizational approaches. Teachers emphasize selfadvocacy and personal responsibility as they prepare students for the greater autonomy and increased academic demands they will experience in high school Finally, while it may sound contradictory, teachers encourage middle school students to fail! By spotlighting high-profile failures each week on #FailureFridays and creating a safe space for students to make mistakes, teachers encourage the development of resilience and perseverance By empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey, the Middle School program instills them with an awareness of who they are as learners and a sense of agency in shaping their futures.

Dolphin Dispatch | Page 15

As The Discovery School commemorates the fifth anniversary of our Middle School, we celebrate our growth and look forward to the possibilities our beautiful new building will afford our community From academic achievements to personal milestones, our students have flourished in Middle School. Alumni of the program continue to excel in high school, equipped with the skills, confidence, and values instilled during their middle school years As The Discovery School reflects on five years of its Middle School program, it reaffirms its commitment to reimagining education and empowering the next generation of changemakers. With a foundation built on innovation, inclusivity, and studentcentered learning, Discovery’s Middle School will continue to prepare students to build a better world as it redefines what the middle school experience can be

“ON TURNING”

"On Turning Ten" is a poignant poem by Billy Collins, an American poet known for his accessible and reflective verses Collins explores the complexities of growing up and leaving childhood behind in this poem

Our Middle School students were challenged to write a poem with their words and phrases based on “On Turning Ten” to capture the universal experience of navigating the transition from childhood to adulthood Ms Heather used lines, phrases, and words from each student to create a collaborative poem that captures the mixture of nostalgia, uncertainty, and hope that comes with growing older and graduating from Discovery.

Yes, it is true

My next birthday looms in the not-so-distant future

Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Sixteen

Not very notable numbers

But...

if I’m being honest, the idea of another year passing is a roller coaster that carves a deep pit in my stomach, consuming my thoughts and crushing my confidence

I feel like I am a captured horse being freed into a cruel world, like I am quagmired in a swamp of responsibilities, like an animal trapped in a cage, or crossing a waterfall on a tightrope

A colorful door closed and locked behind me

Yes, I will have more freedom, But it comes with a price... of responsibilities of stress of anxiety

A dark grey cloud of uneasiness Climbs closer, hovering over my head –like a storm of the mind, a rainshower of the spirit a hurricane of the heart

It’s as if a gust of wind has blown me straight into being a teenager, its looming presence leaving me shivering as it darkening and dimming the past possibilities becoming responsibilities

I should be scared, fearful of what is to come, but I’m not –

I’m ready for something new They might say I am too young to recall innocence and imagination

Dolphin Dispatch | Page 17

But I do.

A rush of nostalgia, like a rolling wave, Rushes over me

At two, I didn't just wear one set of clothes when five was obviously better.

I would put a bucket on my head and ride a toy around the house, serve my parents plastic food, ride high on my dad’s shoulders, and steer my tricycle into the pool

At five, I was a dragon breathing fire in the frigid air.

At the age of six, I loved to fish, by seven, I was a pro fisherman

I recall the unbridled excitement of feeling I could be anything –a mermaid

a wilderness explorer

an astronaut or engineer

Batman... the Tooth Fairy

But right now, I feel unstoppable: I am sailing the ship

I am gaining control of my life, going wherever whenever, testing the waters of being a teenager

As I climb the mountain of maturity, I remember with each step all the thorns I stepped on, all the pits I fell into, all the scars I obtained.

It’s true,

I no longer fall asleep on the couch and wake up in my bed

I no longer am easily forgiven for making mistakes

And although I am curious –excited even –

I must admit

I do not welcome change –the thought of it is frightening, like a free trial subscription that I can’t cancel When I replay the movie of my childhood, I recognize the loss of innocence traded for wisdom

The long hours spent playing “work” and “school” now mirror my reality.

Like the pages of Goodnight Moon, I bid farewell to countless things, invincibility replaced by caution and sensibility

It seems that only yesterday I was building cities, but now I must be a part of someone else’s

I say goodbye to my childhood as my teenage years reach for me with polished, pointed fingernails, the shackles of growing up

Dolphin Dispatch | Page 18

will forever follow me. The teddy bears, Legos, and Matchbox cars

I once cherished packed up in boxes, stowed away in a cotton-candy-filled attic, while fear of the future blows over me like an autumn wind

But now, it is time to start a new chapter of my life –I must own up to my responsibilities, recognize that my choices drive the boat. The sea of life churns violently, each task a storm to conquer But with me as the captain and my wits as my crew, I will sail determinedly through the chaos, always moving forward

It seems like only yesterday I thought I was invincible

Life was a path to adventure alongside my father and mother

But now, they seem more like far-off friends waving goodbye from a distant shore

Deep down, I know that my family and friends are my seahorses. When responsibility circles with wide-open, dagger-like jaws, and the inky fear of judgment overtakes me, the seahorses band together, providing support to thwart the enemy, helping me swim to safety amidst the colorful coral, leading me away from dark, swirling waters

As my voyage continues, trials will be overcome, and tactics will change

Old ways will wash out with the tide, and new ones will return on the waves. Yet while I might move on from my memories, one thing I will never leave behind: “I love you, Mom and Dad ”
