Wrap Up

What is a Human Book? A human book is a person who has volunteered to share his or her experience or expertise on a particular topic of interest to others.

How do I “read” a Human Book? Readers will participate in rotating discussion sessions where they can ask questions and discuss the topic about which the Human Book is knowledgeable.

The Human Library is presented by Eastwood School Council and funded through the Ministry of Education’s Parents’ Reaching Out grant program and the Waterloo Region District School Board’s Parent Involvement grant program.

Special thanks to: Ms. Margaret Wood, ECI Teacher/Librarian Mrs. Tracy Hummel, ECI Office Manager Mr. Jeff Klinck & ECI Administration for their support and assistance in bringing the Human Library to life!

Lori & Don Kraemer

Paired exchange living kidney recipient & donor Lori and Don Kraemer are the first residents of Kitchener Waterloo to be part of a Cross-Canada Paired Exchange involving Living Kidney Donors. Lori and Don are a Kitchener couple who have been married for nearly 20 years, having met in their final years attending Conestoga College. Their story revolves around the challenges that Lori has faced living with Polycystic Kidney Disease, a form of chronic kidney disease that creates cysts on the kidneys and can eventually lead to kidney failure. After she nearly passed away from end-stage renal failure in 2010, Lori was immediately placed on dialysis to maintain her health until a kidney could be found for her. This event would change the course of their lives as Don would make the decision to become a living donor in the hopes of providing one of his kidneys to Lori. The two of them would face many challenges as they prepared for this life saving surgery. Together, they discovered that the process was very in depth, requiring many tests and much preparation. Both of them would eventually become part of the Living Donor Paired Exchange Program which can span across Canada. Don and Lori live in Kitchener, and are the proud parents of three children, two of whom attend Eastwood Collegiate.
