A
s the education sector attempts to restore the learning system similar to pre-pandemic times, vaccinating the pediatric population or children aged 12-17 was seen as one of the remedies. In response to the rising number of cases in the country and with the recent occurrence of mutations in the COVID-19 virus, it was just necessary to ramp up the vaccination efforts to at least prevent severe infections. In an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo last November 3, 2021, Dr. Anna Lisa T. Ong-Lim, MD, of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP), said that usually, in a country the 12-17 age group comprises 20-30 percent of the entire population. With this, it is necessary to include them on the vaccination program in order to attain the herd immunity. Ong-Lim also added that by vaccinating the pediatric age group, they will be able to gain more mobility with their added protection especially when face-toface classes will be restored.
the children who had his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine last January 25, 2022 was Jhon Rey L. Deniega, a resident of Poblacion I and at the same time a student of Grade 7 – Guerrero of Banisilan National High School (BNHS). When asked about his experience, the 13-year-old responded that he did not feel anything, nor any side effects afterwards. He also said that it was good to get vaccinated and he was also looking forward for the face-to-face classes to see his friends and teachers. Along with Jhon Rey was his mother, Renila L. Deniega, 37 years old, who accompanied him to receive his second shot. She said that when she knew about the news that the Department of Education (DepEd) was eying for the return of face-toface classes, she immediately decided to have his son vaccinated. When asked whether she had some hesitations to allow his son to receive his COVID-19 shots she said, “No, I did not have any as I was able to prove it myself that vaccines are safe as I was able to get myself vaccinated first before him.”
Vaccinating children from 12 to 17 started during the first National Vaccination Drive last November 29 to December 1, 2021. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were primarily being administered to the age group. According to National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez, such brands were being used as the same vaccines would also serve as booster shots of the 12-17 age group soon.
Correspondingly, during his visit in Banisilan last January, Dr. Patrick Julius Paccal MD, MHA, one of the Local Health Physicians in the Province of North Cotabato, has also stressed the importance of vaccinating the pediatric group aged 12-17. He said, “There’s a possibility that face-to-face classes will resume. It is not only this time that there’s a need to vaccinate them since the risk of being exposed to adults is still high. The main reason really is for them to be included in DepEd’s face-to-face program. Second, they’re Locally, Banisilan also started vac- usually bored staying at cinating the pediatric age group simulta- home.” neous with the nationwide vaccination campaign.
