A Message from the Commodore

Delivered as promised, August was an exceptional month. We had an abundance of incredible events and one in particular that was not so special: the terrible series of storms that impacted nearly everyone. Clevelanders love to boast that we never see horrific storms and we rarely if ever get tornadoes, we can now take that off the list. Fortunately there was zero loss of life, minimal damage, and for most just the massive inconvenience of losing power and internet service.

Harbor Yacht Club. This long-standing tradition never fails to disappoint, and this year’s race did not. With perfect 15-25 knot winds from the west, over 40 boats blasted down the lake in record time. You could not have paid for better conditions, clear skies, big waves, and consistent breeze…a sailor’s dream! Thanks to all who helped and hopefully next year will bring repeat conditions.

As for the club, we got lucky, very lucky! Several key factors played into this, first was the relative short duration of the storm itself. Secondly and most importantly was the preparedness of the club and its assets. Years ago we made a huge investment in purchasing 100% floating docks. This might have taken years to achieve; however, now we are seeing them pay for themselves. With a storm surge of roughly 24-36 inches, a traditional docking system would have been destroyed and so would have most of the boats. The floating dock system allowed the boats to rise and fall with the water which came in quick and receded just as fast. Further, the regular maintenance of our trees and drainage system, and countless other assets, the CYC got off easy all things considered. Here is where it gets good, the members and our exceptional employees quickly mobilized to salvage member dock boxes and clean up the mess the storm left behind. Our staff showed true ownership that day. They worked hard to clean up their house and ours. The communication was also very helpful and helped to keep everyone in the know.

Several days after the storm, we hosted our 3rd annual Charity Cup Regatta Auction. After months of hard work, this event was almost derailed due to power restrictions and network connection issues. Just like the miracle work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we too were blessed by having the necessary power to pull off a successful event. Hats off to Kelly Kraus (event chair) and Jamie and Megan Rollinson for putting together an incredible event that brought both awareness to CYC and the wonderful blessing of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each year this event gets bigger and better, let’s keep it going!

That same weekend, CYC hosted sailboats from all over Northeast Ohio for another edition of the Falcon Cup Race to Mentor

The Power Fleet under the direction of Ryan and Kristin Kovesdy has been incredible. New to the fleet and chairing for their first time, they have brought incredible events to life. I am concerned they’ve done too well and will likely be asked to chair this fleet again; that is what happens when you do an exceptional job. They were supposed to have an event downtown the weekend following the storm, regrettably the North Coast Harbor Marina did not prepare as well as CYC, and they suffered a catastrophic loss to their docks during the storm. As such, this made Ryan and Kristin pivot to fill the void. Being creative, they put together a pizza night at Center Isle. In just a few short days of planning, it was amazing.

The following weekend the Power Fleet headed to Vermilion. Steve and Ellen Kmetz hosted over 90 members to an incredible weekend of friends, family and fun. On a personal level, this was the Commodore’s first excursion with the new boat. It will not be our last. Thanks to all that helped plan and attend the event.

Moving forward, September is when we all take a breath and enjoy calmer temperatures and less chaos. The kids are back at school or off to college, and the buzz around the club starts to settle down. That does not mean the parties are over; it just means the adults get more time to relax and enjoy stabilized schedules and easy-to-find parking spots!

Joking aside, Fall does bring the best boating conditions. In the Spring it rains too much and the water is cold. In the Summer it can be too hot and storms can be unpredictable. In Fall the water is warm and the sunsets are unforgettable. And let us not forget, Browns games at Topside are the best!

Closing out September, there is one unique event I wish I could be a part of, and that is the ladies trip to Northern Michigan. My wife Peggy and sister Sarah have put together an amazing trip to Traverse City, Michigan, for a shopping and wine lovers expedition. Four days of beautiful weather, and magnificent views in a very special place.

Doc-Side: Try smart strategies for back-to-school stress

It is hard to believe that summer is over, and our kids are back to school!

While it is nice to get back to the routine, this time can be stressful for parents and kids. School is a time for not only learning about math, science, history and art, it is also a time to learn about socializing with others. Many kids experience anxiety as they are faced with the socialization aspect of school and there are some strategies that parents can use to alleviate that stress. Asking specific questions can help you understand more about your child’s day and how they feel about it. You’ll typically learn more about how they’re doing and what’s on their mind this way than when you generally ask, “how was your day.”

providing insight into ways to handle that stress can give them life skills for the future.

It is also important to establish healthy routines to give balance to our kids:

• Get adequate sleep. Proper sleep is critical to managing stress. Limit screen time in the evenings.

• Avoid social media. Studies have shown that there is an incredible amount of social anxiety and depression that has been directly linked to social media. Kids often use social media as a bullying tool or as a way to show off their lives in a way that has been perfected, rather than showing the authentic reality.

Live Entertainment

There are still plenty of breezy musical afternoons and evenings awaiting you on the Porch and Topside. Don’t miss these chances to kick back with a cold one, or two:

Start by checking in regularly with more directed questions like the following:

“What was the best part of your day? What was the worst part?”

“What was the funniest thing that happened today?”

“Who did you sit with at lunch today?”

“What’s something new you learned today?”

“Yesterday you said you were worried about (fill in the blank). How did it go?”

Engaging in conversations with your kids will help you learn more about them and identify potential areas of stress and

• Have a consistent morning routine that allows enough time to wake up, eat a healthy breakfast and avoid the stress of rushing out the door.

• Maintain a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables. Avoid junk food and processed food, candy and sweets.

• Exercise at least five times a week for 30 minutes each time. This is not only good for physical health but is also good for mental health.

These simple strategies are learned and these life skills can be used at all stages of life. Be Well!

Flying our burgee abroad in fond remembrance

Soaking up summer with new traditions and much-anticipated parties

August was a blast! While we were disappointed to not visit Nuevo this year, we had a fabulous pizza party bash instead, and we think we may have a new tradition on our hands. The party brought everyone together for some delicious food and great company. A special thanks to our pizza chefs!

Shortly after, we wrapped up the summer season with an unforgettable trip to Vermilion. It was the perfect getaway, filled with laughter, relaxation, and good times with friends.

Here are photos from the pizza party and other cruises. The group shot at the bottom was taken during the Long Cruise, at Old Club, Harsens Island, Michigan, courtesy of Nicole Stacey.

As the boating season winds down, we’re all about soaking up the last few days of summer on the water. We hope to see you out there, cruising on the lake or anchored at the beach. Let’s make the most of these warm days before fall sets in.

Looking ahead, we’re finalizing the details for the muchanticipated Commodore’s Party on September 13, on the North Lawn. This event will be a special celebration honoring our Commodore and First Lady, and we’ll be sending out information soon. Mark your calendars because you won’t want to miss this chance to raise a toast to their leadership and enjoy a night of festivities with fellow members.

And don’t forget, our annual closing party is just around the corner in October. This year, we’re hosting a chili cook-off! We’re excited to taste all the delicious entries and celebrate the end of a fantastic season. Stay tuned for more details as the date approaches— we can’t wait to thank all our skippers for making this year one to remember.

See you on the water!

General Manager Message

Fall is one of my favorite times of year at CYC, as we transition to a full slate of activities.

Here are a few operational reminders to keep things running smoothly:

• On Labor Day Weekend, no guests will be permitted at the pool on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

• Pets are only permitted on club premises when staying on boats. They must be confined on the boat except when being taken on a leash to or from one’s boat or when being offered relief. Members are responsible for cleaning up all their pet waste immediately.

• Please refrain from using your cell phone for conversational purposes in all dining and bar areas of the Clubhouse. Cell phones are permitted for non-verbal use only (texting and email).

• Smoking marijuana/or vaping on CYC property, grounds, patios and docks is strictly prohibited. Thank you for adhering to this Club policy.

• We’re excited so many members have made the club their favorite takeout spot. We made ordering an easy process by adding a “takeout order” option under the Dining tab on our website, or you can also order directly from the CYC app.

• Also for member convenience, we made it possible for you to pay your statements with a credit card online. (A fee of 3% will be charged.) Credit cards are only accepted online through the CYC website.

Bowling Fleet rolls out this month

By now the boating season may be slowing down, and the cool nights may have you thinking of setting up your bowling team for the winter season.

Last season was close competition through the entire season. Last year’s championship concluded in April with the First Half Champions Locker Room Talk bowling against Team Tackless who ran away from the pack to win the Second Half. Team Tackless controlled the final night just as they did the last month of the season to win the Season Championship. This marks two seasons in a row for the team led by P/C Chuck Inglefield. Chuck is joined by P/C Kevin Carroll, Don Wadden, Michael Ripich, George Shiekh, Ron Lenz and Gary Rossen this year. Also for the second year in a row, Team Tackless donated their winnings to a worthy charity. Their sportsmanship off the island and bowling skills are on display throughout the year as they seem to improve with every week. Thank you to Team Tackless for pushing the league to bowl with style, class and skill during your success. They also would

have won for best dressed team the second year in a

I think we all look forward to getting together again, starting September 25, practice week and meets each Wednesday night until midApril at Fairview Lanes. We skip the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Wednesday between Christmas and New Year’s.

Our league is open to men and women. Currently, we have about 65 CYC members including seven Past Commodores, making up 10 teams last year, which has more than doubled since the 2020/2021 season. We also have a midseason fun night where Past Commodores bowl against the Flagline in order to introduce more people to the bowling culture. Past Commodores won again this year and it is interesting to see how the Past Commodores still get a bit nervous bowling the Flagline.

Any persons interested to join for a few nights or a season, contact me at 216905-0729. Other fleet officers you can contact are P/C Chuck Inglefield 216-3746401 and Tony Hildebrandt 216-301-7455.

CYC opti Race team competes at Nationals

The CYC Opti Race Team travelled to Sandusky Yacht Club to compete in the 2024 Optimist Nationals. The biggest event of the year for Optimist class had 323 registrants from all around the country. Sailors Mark Disch, Charlie Pensom, Morgan Clevenger, Kai Berliner, Marin Berliner and Coaches Spencer Barnes and Robert Mansuetto represented CYC.

As a team that was created last year with great effort from P/C Dan Clevenger, the team’s goal was simple—have fun, learn every day and be a good person. As 2024 season was the second full season for Opti Race Team, competing in such a high level at Nationals was challenging. However, our sailors gave their best and made CYC proud. The Ewell C. Potts Jr. Friendship Trophy is the only trophy that has been given to a single individual with ONLY the votes of other sailors, since 1994. To earn this trophy, one shall display great sportsmanship, friendship and be a role model to everyone. This year The Friendship Trophy was given to a whole team for the first time in 31 years with the votes of different sailors and teams: the CYC Opti Race Team! Our team has displayed great friendship, enjoyed the event and made memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to the CYC Opti Race Team, coaches and volunteers who have been involved throughout the season to make this possible.

Teams results are:

189th - Mark Disch

Headline news from 1950: When the members take back the Island!

Most members are not aware that our precious Island was lost to creditors in 1924 following the post-WWI depression of 1921.

In the history chapter of the 1969 CYC yearbook, Commodore A.A. (Al) Mastics reported on this time in our history:

“The club was in sorry straits, financially. The post-war depression of 1921 had hit it hard. Operating the mammoth layout was expensive, too expensive for the group of yachting members who stayed loyal to carry the burden. Creditors closed in. CYC was declared bankrupt and its assets sold during 1924.

There were many moist eyes at the auction as old time yachtsmen watched their precious club property sold out from under them. The yacht club cycle was on the ebb side. Huge war canoes went for $10. Furnishings, movie machines and all the club gear went for a song to grasping and eager buyers as the auctioneer rapped his hammer on the corner of the swimming pool.”

And here’s the story of the happy followup of repurchase that appeared in the March 1950 edition of the CYC Guff Box, now known as the Islander

These events galvanized a strict policy of fiscal prudence that has been passed along to all CYC leaders and remains in place today!

After many years, Cleveland Yachting Club’s cherished dream became a reality on December 29th, with the purchase of the assets of the Rocky River Island Co., which consisted principally of the island where the Club has been located for so long.

The foresight and generosity of six loyal club members make this possible. In 1940, this group, consisting of Dr. Robert Stecher, James Heintz, Robert G. Heintz, Dr. John Novatney, Al Salzer and Lee Wilson, formed the Island Company and purchased the island with their own funds. They subsequently held the property and operated it until the Club was able to purchase it at an equitable price.

Ownership of the property, immediately imposed the obligation on the Club of continuing the maintenance and bulkheading begun by the Island Company. To meet these and other pressing operating problems, Commodore Slaght, with approval of the Board of Directors, immediately appointed a committee of three members to organize the work. Jim Van Dorn will head the committee with a three year appointment and will be assisted by W.W. Slaght and Harry Reichard, appointed for two years and one year respectively. These men will work on long range plans for improvements on the island as well as with these maintenance requirements which are immediate. Commodore Slaght has asked the sincere cooperation of all members in working with this and other committees to make the ownership of the island bring about the ideal yachting center we have long wanted and a delightful and pleasant spot for all of us to indulge in the boating activities we enjoy so much.
